Title: OCTOBERFEST
Post by: bk on October 01, 2004, 12:00:32 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know all about our prancing about in socks and pantaloons and our month-long celebration, so now it is time to post until the October Cows come home.

I'm not prancing about - but I tried to post in the last batch to respond to FS Pogue about Bush's story about the poor woman (Cissy?) in the debates. That was a lowpoint even for Bush. Calling it manipulative (unsuccessfully manipulative) and REALLY stupid wouldn't be doing it justice.

Car CD player:  Guys and Dolls, the '92 revival recording, and A New Brain, which is kinda neat because Kristen Chenoweth is doing chorus work through the whole thing, paying her dues.

DVD: Still working on the Darth Lucas Star Wars set.  The fourth disc is interesting, with the featurettes.  But I haven't figured out where the easter eggs are located, and I've read there's a blooper reel hidden in there somewhere.

Jay:

In response to your question of the 1929 Show Boat.

It is a part talkie version. It really is a hybrid of the stage musical and the novel. It mixes songs from the score and new songs written for the film.

Universal released the film,

from the imdb website

Universal had originally intended to release the part-talkie version with authentic black spirituals and work songs only. When they realized that this could potentially backfire on them, they obtained the rights to the Kern-Hammerstein musical, incorporated some of the score into the film, reshot two scenes so that Laura La Plante could "sing" (with a dubbed singing voice) two hits from the score of the Broadway show, and, finally, in desperation, filmed a two-reel prologue in which three stars from the stage version of "Show Boat" sang five numbers from the show, two of them being the ones that Ms. La Plante performed in the film. The strategy did not work, and the 1929 film version of "Show Boat" was not successful.

Some of the other songs not written by Kern and Hammerstein

"Down South"
(Ravenal's Theme Song)
Music by William H. Middleton
Lyrics by Sigmund Spaeth
Information on vocal not available

"Deep River"
Traditional
Sung by Eva Olivotti dubbing Laura La Plante

"I've Got Shoes"
Traditional
Sung by Eva Olivotti dubbing Laura La Plante

"Coon, Coon, Coon"
by Leo Friedman and Gene Jefferson
Sung by Eva Olivotti dubbing Laura La Plante

"Ol' Man River"
Sung by Eva Olivotti dubbing Laura La Plante

"Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man"
Sung by Eva Olivotti dubbing Laura La Plante

"The Lonesome Road"
Music by Nathaniel Shilkret
Lyrics by Gene Austin
Sung by Jules Bledsoe dubbing Stepin Fetchit

Hidden Features Website

Star Wars Trilogy
On 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment/Lucasfilm’s release of the original 'Star Wars Trilogy' you can once again find a cool little hidden feature.

To find it insert the fourth disc of the set, the one containing all the special features. From the Main Menu go to the 'Video Games and Still Galleries' section. On the following screen use your remote control to type '11' and then press the 'Enter' key. Depending on your DVD player model you may have to press the '10+' and then the '1' key. Next, type '3' followed by the 'Enter' key and then '8' once again followed by 'Enter.' This will give you access to an almost 5-minute long blooper reel with the DVD credits, consisting of hilarious clips from all three films.

All three movies also have three different kinds of menus that are selected at random when you boot up the disc. If you want to switch to any particular menu set, you can do so with a little trick, too. To get the first menu, simply press the 'Audio' button on your remote control while the FBI logo is visible. To boot up the second menu, press the '2' button during the FBI screen and in order to get to the third menu layout, press '12' – it may be '10+' and '2' depending on your player – and then press the '2' button once again. This Easter Egg is a contribution from our reader Terribly Mauled and Drew Denson

Right now I'm listening to Patti LuPone Matters of the Heart. It's a BK Executive Produced Varese Sarabande CD. I also have The American Songbook Series Dorothy Fields, a compilation CD ranging from early recorded performances of Field's songs to Maureen McGovern doing Make the Man Love Me. I have the original Broadway cast (Robert Alda, et. al.) of Guys and Dolls. Also at work, Tony Randall's Oh Captain and Cole Porter's Aladdin, a recording of the DuPont Show of the Month, broadcast on CBS Television on February 21, 1958. It features the vocal talents of Sal Mineo (not Sal Simbulan), Cyril Ritchard and Anna Maria Alberghetti (Geoffrey Holder is also in the cast). I am well stocked for work today.

I loves October!  It's always been my favorite month.  The cool crisp air.  The beautiful palette changes in the foilage.  Everyone seems a little more positive, purposeful and energetic.  While September usually brings to me feelings of new beginnings, October is the time when those beginnings seem to actually come into play.  I love it!

CDs: a demo of a musical called Spin; Wicked

Listeing to Wicked is a chore (in more ways than one).  I'm part of an interview with the composer on Monday.  Someone I know is writing a book about the making of Wicked, and, feeling unversed in the language of music, has invited three composers to pepper Schwartz with questions.  And so I must listen.  I liked the show on stage but find the CD hard to get into.

What is with all the ads for "Heel Pain" and "toe pads" at the top of this here site?

CD - 2 recently released "first time on CD" reissues of LPs: the 2 CD Jacques Brel singing most of the songs that ended up in JB IS ALIVE... and a few others; and Blossom Dearie sings Broadway.

DVD - More old television - "December Bride" (still a delight) and for nostalgia purposes "Super Circus" with Claude Kirschner and Mary Heartland

VHS - Nothing

And speaking of old tv on DVDs, they are going to release season-by-season sets of MAKE ROOM FOR DADDY, but starting with Season 5, Marjorie Lord's first season!  None of the Jean Hagen years will be included.

I do, too, and feel the same about the recordings of almost all of Schwartz's shows.  It seems to me that when it comes time to record one of his shows, Schwartz flexes his arms and manages to get the recording producer to emphasize only the music and stripping out any feeling of personality and theatricality that the score has in performance.  As a result, his recordings are on the sterile side and his music is not nearly as interesting as it is in the theatre.

One of the powers-that-be from Chicago was in town for a faculty meeting, and I anticipated that I'd have to scream (or just talk sternly) at him about the lack of support and lack of publicity that leads to our classes being cancelled right and left, at the last possible moment, because we don't have the minimal enrolment.

To nobody's great surprised, he announced that the school will be going out of business.  Our "parent" is a for-profit company that's clearly unwilling to invest the funds to run an outpost in New York.  For years, we've been doing it on the cheap - so cheap, in fact, that nobody knows we're here.

And, as fall ends, the public perception will be correct.  We're not here.

Good morning, all!  I have to hit 14th Street now and work on more Eubie Blake today.   I didn't realize the 1929 silent film of SHOW BOAT incorporated songs from the score; I thought that was only in the prologue of scenes from the Broadway production.  Interesting.

Media report:
CD:  Menotti operas: AMAHL (crutches, ya know), THE TELEPHONE and THE MEDIUM, Delibes' SYLVIA and COPPELIA. Guy Haines His Way ("Here You Come Again" kept me happy for the past two months' misery).
DVD:  I don't know yet, maybe NIGHT OF THE HUNTER
  VCR:  nothing

Have a great day, all!  I'll be back this afternoon after I start the laundry.

I haven't seen Wicked (it plays Toronto in the spring), but have come to enjoy the CD thoroughly. (It did take awhile.) For this CD I tend to use the Random mode - I like the unexpected juxtapositions of the songs. I find the score theatrical enough, and now feel I know the characters quite well.

I haven't read the notes yet because I wanted to answer DR Jay's question about SHOW BOAT, but I see DR Michael Shayne and others have beat me to the punch. Let me just add, DR MBarnum, that this 1929 version is the one I would LEAST want you to see. I've had the three SHOW BOATS on laserdisc for a long time, and after watching that first one once, I had NO interest ever in seeing it again. The wonderful thing about the 1951 SHOW BOAT in the laserdisc boxed set is that one can choose to have either Ava Gardner's real vocals as Julie or Annette Warren's dubbed vocals which were used in the theatrical release. Why they didn't do this for the DVD release, I'll never know.

The 1936 James Whale directed version is certainly the most faithful to the show, and has incomparable performances from Irene Dunne, Helen Morgan, and Paul Robeson, among others. But the slickness of the 1951 version, and William Warfield's unmatched singing on "Ol' Man River" still make it my choice.

Now, back to read the notes.

CD Player (at home):  Brian Wilson--Smile.  OMG, this is awful!  The music critics were falling over themselves this week praising this CD as the second coming, but to me it's loud, unvaring noise.  I don't know how (or why) I listened to the whole thing.

WEL mentioning DECEMBER BRIDE reminded me how much I loved this show. I also met a writer on-line a couple of weeks ago who's doing a biography of Verna Felton. Has been granted all her papers by her estate, and though many people might not know who she is, I for one can't wait to read about this wonderfully funny character actress.

And even if you never saw DECEMBER BRIDE, many of you may know her from her voice work in Disney cartoons including the fairy godmother in CINDERELLA and good fairy Flora (the one who preferred pink) in SLEEPING BEAUTY.

No, the Circle-in-the-Square Theatre School is alive and kicking.  It's been in continual operation for over 40 years and shows every indication that it will continue.

You're correct that its sister organization, the Circle-in-the-Square Theatre Company, died in the late 1990s.

No, the school I'm obliquely referring to is far more famous (as a theatre company, not a school), but, since all the students haven't heard the annoucement yet and we're still trying to get people to sign up for our final performance class, I can't mention the name.

VHS: Various Dick Foran westerns

And the Bollywood movie for this weekend (which I have already watched) is:

I spoke to Canada Post yesterday and they are sending me a check for $25.  My brother-in-law's sister has just moved to Iqualuit (WAY NORTH of Quebec in Nunavut). And her postal code does not appear in my post office's system.

However, it is in the Canada post website's system and when I calculated the price of a parcel i sent to her, I got $25, but when I got to the post office they got $50 (they had to use the other Iqaluit PO BOX postal code).

The woman from Canada Post said that she would contact my post office and get the new postal code put in the system. And that she would send me a check.

The thing is, and I didn't want to ask ... why didn't she wonder WHY the price would be double from one PO building to the next. THEY ARE NEXT DOOR TO EACH OTHER.

I mean technically I knew I would win my point, because when she punched in the dimensions and the correct postal code she got $25.  But inside I was dying to find out, why one building would be one price, and next door would be double.

I can't believe it never occured to her to try to find this out.  Anyhow I don't care, as long as the one I"m sending it to is less.  But how ridiculous.  Now i just have to hope that the postal code gets put in the system before I have to send up the Christmas box.

And Verna Felton did a lot of radio too... she played Red Skelton's Grandmother and Dennis Day's mother among other things.

I don't know if it's still in print, but for the 50th Anniversary of the original SHOW BOAT opening, Miles Kruger wrote a wonderful book which was a history of the show.  There is a chart listing songs added and subtracted to and from all major productions and films to that date.  I'd love to see an updated new edition since there have been 2 Broadway revisals and a television version since the original book was published.

Whatever happened to Beef Wellington?

Beef Wellington is the specialty of the house at a lovely bistro in Green-wich Village (ooooh, an ON THE TOWN/WONDERFUL TOWN double reference!).  It is quite delicious there.

I have actually made Beef Wellington for a small dinner party.  It was fine, but two (of the four) pieces of beef got a bit too seared while I was going through that step.  Therefore, the baking "done them in"  (oooh, an almost MY FAIR LADY reference!).  Thankfully, one of them was for the Dear Partner, who was fine with it (as he would be with a piece of shoe leather and some ketchup), and I of course took the other too well done piece.

Always delightful in its presentation (or at least a surprise to most guests), I was surprised at how simple it was to prepare.  (Except for my over-searing, of course.)

I'm back from getting a million tests done for my annual (well - longer than annual) check-up. I must say that I wasn't looking forward to what I thought would be the typical LA hospital situation. Compared to Boulder, that is, where it was usually a short wait and quite civilized. I was very pleasantly surprised. There was NO waiting, everything went like clockwork. The technician even managed to take a LOT of blood out of me without messing up (they usually do - I have small veins and have on occasion been poked 3 or 4 times before they hit the jackpot). Anyway, I've now been probed and poked and worn various fashionable hospital robes -- and am now ready to EAT. I had to fast for this grand morning and was really wanting a bran muffin as my reward. I CRAVED a bran muffin. Do you think I could find one anywhere? No. I'm now back home still hungry. But I'll have to settle, I guess.

Mr. Porter's television soundtrack for Aladdin did little to impress. I like the Supermarket in Old Peking number but I didn't find much else about to listen again.

Theatre IV here in Virginia was supposed to mount a "new version" of Alladin last season, I believe.  After various delays and other reasons, they cancelled the production.  Theatre IV specializes in "family friendly" theatre - they try to avoid the bad connotations that have become associated with the "children's theatre" connotation.

They had all the various estates on board, and the funding was in place.  Unfortunately, due to some corporate type shuffling going on - which was all for the better - the powers-that-be/are weren't able to devote the proper amount of time to the development of the revision.  At least that is what I seem to recall.

-I may just have to search the Times-Dispatch archives now... hmmm...

There is a wonderful thing known as a supermarket.  In them, at least at Von's and Gelson's, both nearby to dear reader Panni, are bran muffins galore, and they are quite tasty.  Also, one can find bran muffins at Winchell's, also nearby.

Thank you for the muffin tip. However, I'm very particular about my bran muffins. Jerry's has ones I like. (They were out.) So does Du-Par's  - I didn't even bother with them, as they've been out the last two times. Gelson's has weird (for me) too sweet and gooey bran muffins. Von's I've never tried. If I may vent - and who's going to stop me - the problem these day with muffins, as with so many other things, is they cannot leave well enough alone. Nothing can be plain and simple, not even a muffin. It has to be a "designer muffin." Almond-carob-soy or rasberry-cointreau or organic lemon-poppyseed-tofu. What's a fasting blood-deprived woman to do if she craves a plain old bran muffin?
...I know. Listen to you and go to Von's.

The Wellington, never stayed there, but I had friends who did when I was living in NY in 1969.  Here's a question: Whatever happened to Beef Wellington?  It was quite popular when I was growing up (and quite pricey) and I had it several times and loved it.  I haven't recalled seeing it on a menu in the last twenty years.

Like DR Stuart, I've seen Beef Wellington still listed on a menu every now and then.  I have made it before, but it's been a while.  I even think Trader Joe's sells a frozen version in single serve portions.  There was a place here in Richmond that would serve an individual size plus a "party" size where they would enclose a whole beef tenderloin - which I think it closer to the original version of Beef Wellington anyway.  The duxelles were almost as good as the beef.  And sometimes the chef would put slivers of foie gras in there too.  Total luxury!

DR Jose or any other DRs in the area, will any of you be going to see LaChiusa's new musical in DC, THE HIGHEST YELLOW?  Have you heard anything about it?

I know they started rehearsals this week.  That's about it for now.  I may get up to see it once I'm back from Houston.  They have a great cast which includes Judy Kuhn, Jason Daniely and Mark Kudisch among others.

The show was supposed to be mounted a few seasons ago, but due to various delays - I believe Mr. La Chiusa's Broadway projects - it got pushed back.  I remember seeing a set model in the office, and I think I may have even picked up a copy of the script from back then.  -Who knows where that is buried in all my stuff right now.

I'm just wondering how much work has been done on the show since that time.  Thankfully, Signature's Resident Musical Director, Jon Kalbfleisch, is more than capable of handling and teaching and conducting La Chiusa's music.  He did a wonderful job with First Lady Suite.  We shall see...

Pace, DRMattH, but I loathe the MGM hyperventilation because it is so slick, a  candy-colored box of slick acts from the Palace Theatre, not an evocation of a not-so-hot crew of performers trekking the Mississippi.  It also misses the epic point of the show and novel:  time and nature and generations endure,  like the river, but people come and go.  Shortening the separation of Magnolia and Ravenal to a short period of time and bringing back Julie as the go-between are not what the theme's about.  One of the great ironies about the original, and the 1936 film, is that Magnolia's career and her daughter's take them so far away from the tiny insulat life on the showboat.  While I find Oscar Hammerstein's ending in the 1936 film no more an improvement over the 1927 original's, I think the awesome cast and direction capture such a feeling for the themes in the show.

I admire a lot of the MGM performances, and the musical arrangements, but I feel they slicked it up way too much.

Bruce:  I was just catching up at FilmScoreMonthlyMessageboard.

You've encountered Eric Paddon.  He's not as young as you might suppose.  He is not well-tuned to the world, IMO.  He has a very narrow focus on how things should be in all things (politics, religion, sports) and I perceive him to be pretty anal about everything, based on years of reading his reactions/thoughts/views -- and sparring with him.  He loves to preach what everyone should think or believe, but he has nothing of value to back up his assertions.  I consider him a bit of a coward, as well, as he hides behind other people whenever he's cornered.

He is totally blinkered to his deficiencies.  His self-awareness is seriously marred by a superego that refuses to be wrong even though every word he writes reveals severe deficiencies...in experience, rational thought and common sense.  He has little regard for anyone who thinks/believes differently than he.

He's not worth/worthy of your time.  Or anyone elses.

You're totally right, DR Elmore, about the over-slickness of the MGM production. I don 't care. I still prefer it. I love all the actors (well, I tolerate Kathryn Grayson; Jane Powell or Ann Blyth might have been better choices) and the color is simply candy-box wonderful. Too slick and talented for a Mississippi showboat? Yes, but so are Irene Dunne and Allan Jones. Anyway, we have both of them so why quibble.

I have that Miles Krueger SHOW BOAT, and it's an exhaustive study of the property. (He, too, loathes the MGM version; of course, it was by far the mostpopular film version of the three and even outgrossed that year's Oscar winner AN AMERICAN IN PARIS.)

In addition to the Turner boxed set of the three SHOW BOATS, I also have the Criterion laserdisc of the 1936 SHOW BOAT which features Miles doing running commentary on the film which he adores. His enthusiasm is contagious even if one doesn't always agree with his assessments.

Started watching PEYTON PLACE this afternoon. Lovely print (colors not as deeply saturated as I thought they'd be, but sometimes Deluxe Color isn't deeply saturated. It was on THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS but not on many other films of the period.) The Dolby Digital 4.0 sound sounds very front heavy to me with just occasional spillage of music into the rear channels. Anyway, it IS a lovely film. I totally forgot about Mildred Dunnock being in it!

DR MattH, I agree about Kathryn Grayson.  She's my biggest problem with every MGM musical she's in.  Jane Powell would have been a fabulous spunky Magnolia, and I would have loved to see Ann Blyth, after MILDRED PIERCE, as Lily Vanessi in KISS ME, KATE.  I love the Champions, but they're so wonderful in SHOW BOAT, you wonder why they're trekking the Mississippi, but, of course, the show boat itself is like a theme park!

I believe Miles told me once that the book cannot be reprinted because some boob at Oxford University Press threw away all the plates, and the photos would cost a fortune to be reset.  I love the book; it's been one of my favorites since it was first published.  I wonder what it's costing on Bookfinder.com?

DR Panni,

I have Steve (the skier) Podborski's mother's bran muffin recipe. (I clipped it out of the Toronto Star ages ago.) It's a good basic muffin - like the kind you seem to hunger for.

It's for 60 muffins, but the batter keeps in the refrigerator for 6 weeks. So you can have a fresh homemade muffin whenever you're in the mood.

Want the recipe? Anyone?

                           RANT ALERT

Just one more rant before I use up my two per day allotment. After my non-bran breakfast/lunch - I guess that would be brunch - I drove to my bank. (For those in the know, it's true that my bank is right across the street from Art's, but I was deep in thought about muffins and other important matters when I came out, so I forgot all about going.) As I was saying, I parked behind the bank and got a parking slip which the teller usually validates. Once inside, however, I saw a very long line to the tellers, so I decided to simply use the ATM out front, get some cash and leave. Which I did. On my way back out I stopped at a desk, explained what had happened and asked the person to validate my parking slip. She said, "I need to see your ATM receipt."
Now, maybe I'm too sensitive, but are we living in an age where a person can't be trusted to tell the truth about something as mundane as that? And, in fact, I said to the bank officer, "Why? Do you think I'm lying?" She just looked at me like I was speaking Dutch. It wasn't worth arguing about, so I tossed the receipt on her desk with as much Bette Davis attitude as I could muster. I don't think she knows who Bette is, so that was a complete waste.
...Oh for the good old days...

Did I mention that the other night the turtle broke into my landlady's bedroom (through the pation screendoor) and shattered an antique lamp? She found him happily playing in her bathroom. It was all negotiated before CHARLEY, but I didn't get a contract until I got back from Goodspeed.  I was so caught up in the Goodspeed production and our good friend Tony Walton that I clearly forgot about mentionng it, or thought I had!

By the time I started woring on it, my health was a mess, and most of the work was done during the two weeks of collapsing bookcases when I was living outside the apartment.  I sent the band parts to San Francisco in instalments.  I hear the band sounds pretty good.  We went with piano (I think/hope he's doubling celesta), percussion and cello.

Sounds like excellent casting, Larry. I think I mentioned ages ago that there actually was a very short-lived Canadian sitcom (pilot and one episode maybe) loosely based on stories I had told about my mother and her bridal shop. I did not write it. I cannot remember who played "me" - it wasn't Jane Fonda - but my mother was miscast TOTALLY. The head of CBC Drama, after viewing the pilot, insisted that the only RIGHT casting would be Yvonne de Carlo (a Canadian by birth, so she would have met the CBC nationality rules) and they must bring her in immediately. He knew my mother and he was so right. They did not bring Miss de Carlo in and the series died.

That makes sense. But I think I put myself in the mood and may whip up the batter this weekend. It's quite a production (2/3 cup wheat germ, 3 cups bran, 3 cups All-Bran, 5 cups flour ... you get the idea). There are some neighbors who like to share these things.

Gord, the DP(artner), has an elderly aunt who's quite a character - she likes to outdo everyone. She enjoyed these muffins and insisted on having the recipe. I told her the batter is for 60 muffins, but she could halve the recipe. (It's just the aunt and uncle in a small apartment.) But true to form she doubled the recipe. She later said she had to use a large plastic garbage pail, plus a canoe paddle for mixing.

A little quibble. The recording of the TV version of Aladdin is not a soundtrack, but rather a studio recording of the show. Basil Rathbone who appears in the tv version and sings is not on the recording, but his role is sung by someone else who sings another role. I think its George Hall. Don;t have the cd in front of me

Since you bring it up... Bran muffins are not my favorite, either. That's why when I DO feel like a bran muffin, it has to be the best possible bran muffin, The creme de la creme of bran muffins (if that makes any sense). FYI - I did not know of the existence of muffins until I left Hungary. Muffins are not known in Budapest -- or weren't in my day. Neither was Jello.
DD tells, BTW, me that Hungary is the porn capital of the world. I guess you have to do something to make up for the lack of muffins.

I must go now.  First to water my outdoor flowers.  And then to finish reading a book (only 20 pages left).

Btw, is it sneaky that I told my sister about a book I really wanted at Costco, knowing that she would probably buy it?

And she did. :)

I think you will really like the show, Jane.  It's hard for me to be fair about such things because anything that is a fantasy already has my interest.  I think that is why I didn't enjoy Boy From Oz and Wonderful Town as much.  They were ok but I would go see Wicked again before I would either of them.

My friend stopped by work to see how we were all doing so I didn't get a chance to miss her.  We did lunch.   I had Flan and it was W*O*N*D*E*R*F*U*L*L* !  MMMMMMM!

It's Fridays at 2:30 I teach a musical theatre workshop at a college in New Jersey.

Bran muffins used to be a big part of my diet.  Nowadays, if I have any sort of muffin in a month, it's rare.  Oddly, though, I had a muffin today... raspberry cheese.  The raspberry part was bright pink; the cheese part, a yellowy off-white.

Speaking of which, what's Highest Yellow about?  I'm pretty sure Kudisch was here this week, doing The Man Who Would Be King by my friends Neil Berg and D.J. Salisbury.

And speaking of cheap steaks, I just had one for dinner, over a piece of bread.  DW Joy couldn't imagine it would be good, but, she tasted a bite and had to admit

Clearwater--that's where most of the old folks stay.   How familiar are you with it?

Well, the first time I went there was in... 1977!
I was living in Montréal then, and a Canadian friend of mine had a condo in Safety Harbor, where the Spa is.
I remember the famous Kapoke Tree Restaurant which closed a few years ago!

Then, in the eighties, I had the opportunity of going back there often. I forget the name of the big Shopping Mall on the way to Clearwater Beach; I enjoyed going there, and it was so sad, when I went back for a visit "to my past" in Florida, in 2001 to see that huge place almost empty, with hardly ten stores remaining open, mainly haidressers'....

I also went many times to the terrific Eckerd Ruth Hall, downtown Clearwater, where I saw Julie and also Rosemary Clooney in her Christmas Show....

http://www.rutheckerdhall.com/
Bernadette P. is to appear there next January!!

In 2001, on my way in from France, I landed in Tampa late at night, rented a car and checked in some motel, and went first thing in the morning to Clearwater Beach: I love the causeway leading to the beach, with those huge bushes -- I did not print kerries, you noticed!! -- of poisonous laurels....

There are LOADS of old folks everywhere in Florida, Danise!!

I have also been to Ruth Eckerd many times.  Of course the last thing I saw was Millie.

That's a bit far for me to drive and I refuse to go over the bridges alone at night but it does make for a nice day drive.

I think I was only at the Kapoke Tree Restaurant once. When I was 16.

As for there being LOADS of old folks everywhere in Florida, I couldn't say.  I never noticed.   ;)

CD:  Queen Latifah's "The Dana Owens Album"  her jazz album that was just released.  While she is in very good voice, the cd seems overproduced, especially for a jazz album.  Herbie Hancock is on hand, however, for "I Put A Spell On You."

This, from Fashionable Food, by Sylvia Lovegren:

Beef Wellington was the premier party dish of the 1960's.  Even more than coq au vin, veal Orloff, beef strganoff, steak Kiane, seak au poivre, or duckling a l'orange, it was rich, dramatic, expensive, and seemed difficult and time-consuming to prepare.  In short, it was everything a gourmet dish should be.

For those not in the know, Beef Wellington was a fillet of beef, coated with pate de fois gras or a mushroom duxelles, wrapped in a pastry and baked.  The idea was to get the pastry flaky and crisp while the beef inside remained fairly rare.  (Sorry, Jane.)  Usually, puff pastry was used for the crust.  A sauce made with Madeira was often served with the dish.

It was, for a time, quite the dish to be served at dinner parties.  Unfortunately, because many home chefs weren't up to the task of making it properly, several rip-off versions showed up, to where any meat wrapped in pastry was called "Wellington," whether for good or ill.  Also, tastes began to change, became more sophisticated, and the sophistication of Beef Wellington became suspect as it became less cutting edge.  Some wags even suggested that the reason it was called Beef Wellington was not because it was the duke's favorite dish, but because it resembled the boots he wore.

Properly prepared, it is still a dish worth pursuing.  It just isn't considered "popular" any more.

SWW when I ate meat, I wanted it fairly rare.  Prime rib in our house was only served medium rare, more on the pink side then brown.

With that thought I'm tempted to eat some of the ice cream Keith is about to indulge in.  I shall be good because I want to eat my heart out in NY.

I had to get one last (potentially) HHW fix before I go back to house-sit at the house that has the slowest computer in the world, even though it has DSL Internet access.  Mini-rant:  It's ridiculous.  It's so [expletive deleted] slow!  I don't understand how the owners can stand it.  They must not have Internet on their computers at their work.  End of mini-rant. :-X I try and just accept the computer speed for what it is...slow...and deal with it.  But it's almost like going through withdrawal.  The computer's there availabe for use, but mostly not really worth it.  Okay, it's out of my system.  Thanks for letting me rant! ::)

Good Evening!

I'm back from Norfolk and my "first" performance of MAMMA MIA!  I had a few "jitters", but I had a good time and a good show.  It took me a while to adjust my mixing board to the sound mix I'm used to hearing, but I think I'm close.  In any case, I now know what "this" sound mix sounds like.  I was caught off guard in the Overture when the whole band started up - again, the "different" sound mix, but I made it through the show with no major boos-boos.

The drive down to Norfolk was long.  And I even took the right highway this time.  There was a major accident on the other side of the highway, and they had to do some rerouting of the traffic in order to get everyone around it.  So, they were closing off some exits, and eventually detoured some of the westbound traffic onto the eastbound lanes.  The accident only added about 20 minutes to my trip, but then I hit the usual rush hour tunnel and bridge traffic once I hit Hampton Roads.  That was an additional 30-40 minutes.  Ah, well...

I made it to the theatre in time to get a quick dinner at Nordstrom's again, and had a good hour to warm up before the show.  Then I played the show, drove home, and here I am...  And now I'm gonna go read the rest of the posts from today, and then head to bed since I need to get up in time to drive back to Norfolk... -And start all over again...

;)

Laters...

Well, the posts have been read...

DR Noel - The Highest Yellow is about a Van Gogh.  If I recall correctly, Jason Daniely is playing Van Gogh, Mark Kudisch is playing his doctor, and Judy Kuhn is playing a whore.  Interesting, huh?  To find out more, go to Signature's site:

Signature Theatre (http://www.sig-online.org)

*You can also see the plans for their new theatre complex.  Let's just hope there's enough money to go around the DC Theatre Community.  Over the next couple of years, most of the major theatres in DC are building new spaces including Arena Stage, The Shakespeare Theatre, Studio Theatre (continuing their expansion), and, of course, The Kennedy Center.

As for the food who's name shall not be mentioned again... I know what I'm NOT having for breakfast in the morning.  -And, like DR Danise, give me a Chocolate Muffin one anyday.  I was hoping to have one at Nordstrom's tonight, but there were out.  Instead, I got a Peanut Butter Brownie.  Pretty tasty.

OH!  On the drive back, I had the Norfolk NPR station on my car radio.  And it was 80's night!  -The 1980's, not the 1880's nor the 1780's...  What a fun drive I had for a while...  "I'll Stop The World And Melt With You", "Video Killed the Radio Star", etc... And then a short live acousting set from Tears for Fears.

OK - I need to get up in six hours, so...

Goodnight.

An espresso, natch - this being a Hungarian evening. And to eat -- a CHOCOLATE MUFFIN! And it was so absolutely delicious I almost died from the pleasure of it all.

Ah-hah!

I now have a new screensaver picture....to replace WHAT IF?  It is the cover of the new Bruce Kimmel novel Writer's Block!

Very nifty!  When you show it on TV be sure to wear a red shirt so it will show up nicely!

Mildred Dunnock - DRElmore - as DRMATTH will confirm plays Miss Thornton, the English teacher at Peyton Place High School who is passed over for the job as principal in favor of newcomer Mike Rossi.  She makes a very nice speech at the Graduation Dance is otherwise reminds all of us of at least one teacher in our high school.

Speaking of SHOWBOAT from 1952 (?) - all those damned chorus people in the SHOWBOAT number....where are they afterwards?  We never see them again in any of the shows or numbers?

Must be day players - then into the river with ya!
