Title: THE PRIVATE READING

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were private and yet not, and now it is time for you to post until the private cows come home.

For the TOD, among people we know, I think BK is among the very best, but it seems that recently BK's work is starting to be more widely sung and appreciated.

Of course, I think Skip's work is not well-known enough - yet!

Among people we don't really know personally, I think Michael Stewart never really got his due in terms of reputation as a lyricist, but that may be because he only wrote lyrics for two hit shows, I Love My Wife and Barnum.  i think Martin Charnin is undervalued as well, in terms of his overall body of work.

Good morning, all!  I dreamed i was back at Goodspeed with my friend Meggie Cansler. The Big Dream before that is too fragmented now for me to remember.

Today is  City Center with Joshie day. It should be fun.  I have to work on "Happy Birthday," which is being being transposed for Zoe Wannamaker.

BK's day was a party I wish my days were.  He gets a couple of fun rehearsals, although Sami's was more a tryout performance, and I get a long laundry day: clothes and bedding and a royal workout assembling the bed with new mattress cover, sheets and blankets.  Why don't the manufacturers of contour sheets and mattress pads tell the buyer which side of these items is the long side and the short side? By the time I've figured it out, I'm exhausted.

Many of the names already listed, but I will add Bob Merrill...especially his ensemble numbers for NEW GIRL IN TOWN....and couple of the solos, including "Did You Close Your Eyes?".....

And this....although it's a great duet in the show.

I got up onstage last night and couldn't remember many of my lines.....perhaps age IS more than just a number.

This is a very talented group of young performers....well college age.....they can be very funny.....and the show and songs are okay.....it just seems a bit rushed to me.

We have an "until we're done" rehearsal tonight, then Wednesday off....then performances Thursday and Friday....then DONE.....

They re-shot some of "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and instead of calling Wood and Malden back.....they used a photo of them pasted on a piece of plywood.....very noticeable if you watch the movie.

I offer my annual Tony-snub ode:

Kiss your hopes goodbye
Take comfort in the dollars
They had luck, a shame for you
And do not forget
What you did got snubbed
What you did got snubbed

Why’d you even try
The voice inside you hollers
It’s all such a big to-do
So go on and fret
What you did got snubbed
What you did got snubbed

Gone, snubs are never gone
As you soldier on
The snub’s what you’ll remember

Kiss your hopes goodbye
As Nietzche taught the scholars
Good things come to very few
Get upset, go and fret
What you did got snubbed
What you did got snubbed
What you did got – Nothing.

Mark and I enjoyed Sami's performance very much! We loved all the new songs we'd never heard before and enjoyed the old ones too. I was quite surprised and pleased at how many new songs there were - they were super fun! It must be challenging to write from the viewpoint of a 14-year old. We look forward to seeing the show again when Sami's off-book and with the complete staging. :D I know we ran out kind of quickly afterwards, but we knew you didn't want comments and Mark's allergic to eggs and can't eat lemon meringue pie.  :-\

Tony Nominations (http://www.tonyawards.com/en_US/nominees/index.html)

This reminds me, I did not see any responses to my request for play recommendations for Keith's cousin.  Did I miss them?

I don't remember replying.

These are all MY opinions and my opinions alone. They do not reflect the views of the theatre going public

Stay away from Living for Love if it's still running when Cousin is here. It will probably close very soon due to no nominations and mixed to bad reviews.

Wolf Hall is OK I was not thrilled by it but it's not bad. It's not a fabulous piece of work. It came with great notices and, I think, huge expectations. It's doing well but it's not the box office draw they thought it would be, methinks. It's always on TKTS and it's often on TDF. Based on word of mouth from London I thought it would become a sell out but it's not done that. It's not the huge success that Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nigh has been. It's well done British theatre but it's also PBS on stage.

I loved Something Rotten. A certain boob who works for the NYTimes didn't like it but that only confirms my opinion that he is, indeed, one of the biggest boobs writing reviews in New York.

I found The Visit to be slow, boring, tedious and, overall, tiresome. I know that other people are peeing their pants about it but I don't think it will last long after the Tony awards. I think the only reason it's still open is because they were waiting for the award announcements so they could play them up. The show runs between 95 and 100 minutes, no intermission and it's still TOO LONG!!! I don't remember a note of music from the show and a cast of excellent actors does not do their best work.

I'm of 2 minds about Fun Home. I think it has limited audience appeal. I also saw it downtown at the Public in the first incarnation. Everyone LOVED it but I was not taken by it. I much prefer the book (a bio of the lesbian cartoonist Alison Bechdel presented in graphic novel/comic book form). A couple of people said it's better after the move. If they are interested in seeing a show (with not so memorable music) about a lesbian growing up in a home with a closeted father they may enjoy it (I'm giving it short shrift I know but I'm just not crazy about the show).

I haven't seen On the 20th Century. It's hard to get discount tickets and if it's not on discount I don't see it.

Kevin saw The Audience and thought it was well worth full price. I probably won't see it because again, it's not discounted enough.

I may try and see Finding Neverland only because I love the movie. There are cheap balcony seats so I may try to see it before the Awards. It didn't get any nominations but it's doing very well so they can live without the nominations.

I didn't much care for It Shoulda Been You and I think it will close soon since it got no nominations. I am VERY surprised that Lisa Howard didn't at least get a nomination. She was wonderful in a not very good show. It's a sitcom musical with stars. The excellent cast tried their best but they couldn't save the not very good show. Again, I don't remember a note from the music and the book is a tired old sitcom plot with a twist that doesn't work (for me).

I have to get back to work. Perhaps I can post more later but that's it for now.

I have not seen Dr. Zhivago, Gigi or American in Paris. I have no desire to see any of these 3 shows. AIP got great reviews, the other 2 not so much but again, I have absolutely no interest in seeing any of them.

Those three shows seem like such a waste of time to me DR BEN......none of the movies was a particular favorite of mine either.

What I find interesting is that a PLAY is nominated for best choreography.  Did the DOG play have music and dancing.....or I guess I should ask HOW did the DOG play having music and dancing?

I haven't seen Curious so I'm not sure how it all works but according to a friend it's "choreographed" within an inch of it's life as part of the direction. Almost every movement has some meaning and is worked into the play. The Nominating Committee said that the "direction/choreography" could be considered for Best Choreography though I'm sure that award will go to An American in Paris

"Dancing at Lughnasa" in the 1990's was another example of a non-musical play which got a choreography Tony nomination.  That play did have a spectacular big dance number, though.

I remember that DR FJL.

Thanks, DR BEN.....that is most interesting.

And I agree I really enjoy A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE.....on CD and it seems like something I would like to see onstage as well.

Since I am NOT a Gene Kelly fan, I can't even imagine AN AMERICAN IN PARIS being entertaining since his smug face is all over it in my mind.....but maybe the show would make me forget that.....

I know that both Larry and Fred really enjoyed Honeymoon in Vegas and I appreciate and respect their opinions but I found the show tired, unfunny and TOO LONG!!!

Except for Rob McClure's performance and one of the best opening numbers I've seen in years (I Love Betsy) the show didn't work at all for me. I thought after that opening the show would be great but it rapidly declined and I left the theatre disappointed. I didn't like the book (I never saw the movie and now have no plans to see it), Tony Danza was mediocre (his character was creepy) and the music (except for Betsy) was unmemorable. I'm not surprised it didn't get any nominations.
Title: Re: THE PRIVATE READING

Except for Lisa Howard's snub, again I'm not suprised that It Shoulda Been You didn't get any nominations. I saw the show and would have been surprised if it got anything for book or music/lyrics.

I think even though Finding Neverland is doing well at the box office one of the producers is not a well-liked person in the Broadway community and his arrogance and bullying behavior has come back to bite him in the behind.

I haven't seen Skylight (a London import) and probably won't see it.

I've heard mixed things about Hand to God (nomination for best New Play - won't win). Some people think it's, coarse, vulgar, mean and very one-note with nothing to recommend it while others consider it to be a vital new play and an exciting new voice in the theatre. 2 people I respect did not like the show so I doubt I will bother spending money on it.

The one I saw today was a young(er) Asian female. I found her a bit abrupt, but she was better than the last one. She explained some things that neither of the other cardiologists had mentioned and that have a lot to do with patient comfort and confidence. On the other hand, she make a remark that indicated that she has little knowledge of nutrition or biochemistry. I give her a C+. I'd really hoped to find someone whose attitudes and values are closer to mine. I returned home feeling quite frustrated. On the positive side, I like my primary care physician, who is an osteopath, and whose views are much closer to my own.

I'm considering a nap. I'd been told "no naps!" in order to sleep better at night, but DR FJL's comment yesterday made me reconsider this. The length of the nap may make the difference. (I woke up at 5:30 this morning and couldn't go back to sleep.)

Jane, you will have a lovely view from your new condo. I'm not surprised that it has a woodsy sort of feel.

I'm not sure it is woodsy until our walk takes us through the park.  Yes, we like views.  To prove this we lived in a strange house in Michigan, first time, just to look at the beautiful ravine behind it.

The last time I was in NY they were there and I spent a lovely day with them.

Jeanne, I've been trying to find the video of that very recent Dr. Sanjay Gupta CNN health report on cnn.com, but so far it may not be up yet.

The most startling thing he said (if I'm recalling right) was something about if you only have one free hour during the day to either exercise or to power nap, you're better off with the power nap.

Then I found a treasure.  Post cards addressed to Janie from my mother dated Dec 1960.  They are very sweet and filled with love.

My mother used to return to England to spend time with her family.  This trip was one of her longer ones and so there are a number of cards from her.  Because I collected post cards I also have a couple she wrote my brother.  I will have to send them to him.

That is why all of my sheets have stripes.  not big bold stripes, but stripes nonetheless.

Fred, thanks for the follow-up post on napping.

I found this:
How do you combat stress?
Studies show people who nap five times a week have less heart disease. For me to take a nap is next to impossible, but finding ways to get rid of every day anxiety can be as simple as a meditation, a walk, or a prayer. Healthy behaviors are as infectious as the flu, and loneliness can be as bad for you as a smoking habit. So surround yourself with good people and try to get six hours of face-to-face interaction everyday. As a whole, we are not as communal as we use to be. Fifteen years ago, on average, we had three good friends each and today we only have 1.5.

Interesting about exercise vs napping. I certainly think it's beneficial to take a stress break (or three) during the day, whether that's exercise or a nap. Exercise has so much more credibility, though! Napping does seem like laziness.

DR Dan M, any news?

I've been calling and left messages since Friday, but no responses yet. So, I still don't know what the biopsy results are. I will try again tomorrow. Maybe I haven't heard anything because there's nothing to report, but I can't assume that as much as I'd like to.

Feeling a bit better today. Had major constipation from the combination of the anesthesia and the oxycodone. I don't know how people who need to take that stuff deal with that problem.

Lots and lots of water!!  And an occasional stool softener.
