Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of restaurants of long ago (none of the restaurants mentioned are there anymore with the exception of Lawry's), and now it is time for you to post until the hungry cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: MIMESIS!
-
First post after BK!
-
Either that, or last post before Ben or Fred.
-
But I am sure that George wil be back before he retires.
-
Thanks for the notes today, bk! (and the video)
-
Nothing else to report at the moment.
-
Good morning, all! I'm ready to hit the Columbia library this morning. First, a stop at the bank to order more checks.
I only remember vague sections of dreams last night: visiting a work friend with children and something about collecting checked items at a hotel.
-
DR Laura, how did you like the SHOW BOAT? I haven't watched it yet, but Patrick Cummings, my leading man on the ROBERTA recording, plays Julie's husband Steve. He's a wonderful actor.
-
More coffee!
-
I meant to post water stay way vibes for Jack yesterday ...not sure if I did
so there they are now, just incase!!

Healing vibes for Dan
-
Good morning, all.
By George (no relation), I think it's coffee time.
-
I hate detest loathe abominate hot weather. I am already looking forward to the first blizzard.
-
Lovely notes and restaurant memories. I remember at least seeing a few of those, such as Kowloon and Wan-Q in the brief time in 1979-1980 that I lived on South Beverly Drive and was up and down Pico a lot. I might have eaten at the latter. And it seems like I just saw the Kowloon sign in something I was watching. What the hell was it?
I loved the interior of that Lawry's location on the west side of the street. BK stopped short of mentioning Ollie Hammond's just to the north. I've always been sad that I was only in there a couple of times before its demise. And all those years, I never got into the restaurant with the whale's mouth door. Edit: Fish Shanty!
My first Fatburger was the one in the La Cienega/San Vicente crossing, and farther to the north, I ate in Norm's a number of times. A favorite coffee shop was the Beverly Hills Cafe just north of Wilshire. And for a short while (?) there was Casa Cugat, where none other than Xavier Cugat would make his rounds, using a cane, greeting people at their tables.
-
I'm afraid DR Elmore has a little more abominatin' to do before that blizzard gets here.
-
Just a few more in that general area:
Factor's Deli on Pico at Beverly Dr. (I lived near Cashio), Love's Pit Barbecue a bit west of there, and the Ship's at Olympic and La Cienega.
Does anyone remember a restaurant called At Marty's which was farther east on Pico? North side of the street. Early '80s for me, and I have no idea if it was new or old then.

Be glad you don't live here!

It is a beautiful production. I knew it would be.
-
It ends a bit differently than the version I saw touring a few years ago.

TOD: We did not go to restaurants often when I was growing up. When we did, it was to Monti's for a steak. Monti's just closed earlier this year.
-
good morning to all
-
tod
too many restaurants came and went. montreal was known for its food.
-
I think the Benihana is still there on La Cienega. At any rate, that was the site of my first hibachi (actually Teppanyaki) meal.
-
TOD:
I grew up in the east bay area of Northern California (near Hayward) and our favorite Chinese restaurant was Hunan Gardens. My mother liked a place that basically served American food called The Pinecone, but my dad didn't like it (I found out years later). When someone had a birthday, the waiters never bothered to learn the birthday person's name, so they would just sing, "...Happy birthday from The Pinecone. Happy birthday to you." So, at home, when one of us had a birthday, we always sang "Happy birthday from The Pinecone..." and we all thought that was hilariously funny.

I don't remember At Marty's. We stopped and had soup at Factor's on our way to the airport in November and took sandwiches with us to eat on the plane. I ate at Ships when I was young. Keith & I went to Loves a few times but that was all.

Good morning, all.
Vibes for all in need.

I have several days of posts to catch up on.

We didn't eat out often, but when we did, it was always something Mom couldn't/wouldn't/didn't know how to cook.
So, the Oriental House, the Chinese place up the street, was a haven for us. My two sisters both worked there. I worked there for a day (off the books, because I was only 14 at the time).
It has had several owners over the years, but it's still there. And my parents still go once or twice a month. We went twice when I was visiting and I picked up takeout there another time. It may be better than ever, thanks to its authentic Chinese menu.
-
Mom is celebrating her 88th today. My sister Linda has come to Louisville from Virginia, and her son will be there tomorrow.
-
Happy 88th birthday to your mother!
-
Happy Birthday, Mrs. G!
-
When I was growing up, I never ever had Mexican or Chinese food.
-
Hell, I was nearly a senior in high school when I first had Chinese food, and I'm the one who introduced my parents to it! For us, that was exotic eating.
And I'm pretty sure I never had Mexican food until I moved to L.A. after college. Which is pretty damned hard to believe. Maybe a fast food taco here and there prior to that? I honestly don't think so.
-
When I was growing up, I never ever had Mexican or Chinese food.
I don't remember having Mexican food until late high school.
-
I'm up, I'm up - six hours - the alarm is set for ten-thirty, but I just can't fall back asleep it seems.
-
Lovely notes and lovely video in the notes.
Yesterday's topic: We had one theatre in my town: The Ritz! I saw Kim, Tarantula, Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein, Summer Magic, The Parent Trap, and many other Disney movies there.
Then we got a Jerry Lewis cinema where we saw reissues of GWTW and The Ten Commandment. Tora Tora Tora, Benjy, Wicked Wicked, Goodbye Mr Chips (the musical), and many others.
As a family we most often went to the drive in: The Center Brook (still open, so named because it was halfway between the towns of Centerton and Brooklyn), the Templeton (closed), and the Maplecroft (closed).
-
Restaurant wise:
Gray Brothers cafeteria....still in operation although at a different location.
A couple of drugstores that had fountains and counters and stools.
Big Boy's Drive In.....
Not many restaurants at all, that I even recall.

This is an e-mail I just woke up to - I adore the majority of our customers but these OCD people are just too much.
"Dear Mr. Kimmel,
This is to advise you that the Ltd OST CD release of "One-Eyed Jacks - Encore Edition" arrived at my address today (13/07/15). The CD was sealed and the discs were securely held and seem fine on initial inspection.
What is regretable is that the top inner hinge of the twin disc holder was defective. No missing bit(s) were found inside the case so it is very possible this was a moulding fault on the production line and should be investigated. The design is far from robust and it would be wise to use a different style of holder. I also note that there was an additional major crack on the outer leading edge of the CD case.
As a specialist OST collector, these discoveries are a major disappointment, because owning the originally-designed CD case in defective condition obviously reduces the value of a ltd edition disc set. I am starting to think I made a serious mistake in buying something from Kritzerland."
I have responded, oh, yes, I have responded.
-
Oh my god.
-
That one gets worse and worse as you read on.
-
BK's probably on his way to the factory to investigate that part of the production line.
-
Having dealt with folks with OCD and other problems, I guess I understand it, but it doesn't make it right or acceptable, at least to me. I wasn't mean in my response - I suggested he was being unreasonable and that I was certain he'd had this kind of problem with other labels' CDs (how could he not), and that a thank you for our speedy service and perhaps even the damn music on the CD might have been nice. And I recommended that if he was thinking he'd made a serious mistake ordering from us that the easy answer to that problem was never to order from us again.
-
A MOULDING FAULT - that's the title of the third book in the To Kill A Mockingbird / Go Tell A Watchman series.
-
I like the notion that the CD case was "especially 'moulded'" for this one CD. No other CD could fit this case, JUST this one CD.
And, naturally enough, no replacement case would EVER do!
And, oh! my! The design of the especially 'moulded' CD case wasn't "robust".
The case mine arrived in looked exactly like the cases that hundreds of others have arrived in.
I'm thinking the buyer has no intention of actually listening to the CD...he just wants it as an investment...in shrink wrap...all shiny and new and perfect.
-
Hey!
-
Hey!
There.

Hell, I get so many damaged jewel cases I buy them in bulk from Amazon.
-
And I am home from Columbia. i kept falling asleep, so I came home.
-
I buy them in bulk, too -- CD cases (single and double), and someone gave me a ton of DVD and Blu-ray cases that also come in handy -- hell, I'm my own packaging shop.

Monday afternoon greetings! I had a check-up this morning with my cardiologist, who is concerned enough about the swelling in my legs and feet that he's scheduled me for an echocardiogram. Must not be too concerned, though, because it won't be until July 28.
I went from there to do some errands, but cut them short to get home ahead of stormy weather. Made it just in time and turned on the TV, where channel 9 meteorologist Steve Raleigh is going berserk. Our weather has calmed down a bit, but it looks pretty nasty around where Richard's brother lives on the east side of Cincinnati.
-
Hoping all is OK, Ginny.
-
Thanks, DR FJL.

But I am sure that George wil be back before he retires.
Sadly, I was not able to be back before I retired (for the evening, not from work ;) ).

In the middle of the storm this morning, my father was having trouble breathing. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
My sister and were with him for about 4 hours.... Two of my brothers and two of my other sisters arrived....
They are keeping him at least overnight....but he is much improved. They want to check his breathing and make sure he doesn't have the start of pneumonia.

So that's been my day so far.

I am, therefore I...umm....exist.

Am I the only one who doesn't think the complaint is unreasonable? I disagree with him saying he thinks he made a serious mistake ordering from Kritzerland. That is obnoxious. But when I buy a book and the jacket is even bent in the slightest it makes me beyond crazy. i can understand someone being upset that cd case is defective.

That does sound difficult. i have not been able to really swim this summer. Just aqua fitness and exercises and swimming widths. But so far no lengths. The pool has been too crowded. They put up a lane rope sometimes but i haven't used it yet.

Yes, you are the only one. This isn't a book and the CD and packaging is perfect. Plastic is plastic and while it would be nice to live in a perfect world, frequently the plastic cases arrive with some damage - it costs five cents to fix the problem - his doesn't really sound like a problem, though.

He responded back - he thinks I was being sarcastic. I informed him that when I'm sarcastic there's no mistaking it. Clearly I'm dealing with OCD and perhaps Asperger's here.

When I was growing up, I never ever had Mexican or Chinese food.
The first Mexican food I had was Jack in the box tacos when I was in college....if you can call deep fried frozen taco shells filled with ground mystery meat Mexican food

We occasionally had Chinese food growing up. If you can call chow mein ithat comes in a can Chinese food

We also had Italian food.... Ziti baked with path mark no frills brand jarred sauce and store brand cottage cheese

Also to John G's Mom who coincidently is also having a birthday
-
Mom has had a nice birthday from the sounds of it. My sister Linda took them to lunch and spent the day doing some work in the garden. But there are tornado threats for the evening, which is not so fun.

Try not to envy my youth in a gourmet household
Sounds rather like mine own youth.
I said earlier that Chinese food was "exotic"? Well, a few years earlier, that description belonged to pizza.
Hey, it was Italian!
You know. Foreign!
Yes occasionally mom would buy a box of frozen Ellio's pizza
-
No tornado vibes for Everybody!!
-
And sometimes, when we would travel to visit my Grandmother in Queens we would buy a half dozen of these exotic items called "bagels"
-
Mom tried for years to make bagels. Mom never had success. And, of course, we had to eat the failures.
-
She made plenty of Southern dishes when I was growing up, vegetables that cooked on the stove for hours.
I always joked that she bought a steamer the day after I moved out of the house.
-
Maybe we should have homemade food from our youth as a topic someday. Have we done that already?
-
Great topic, Laura.

Been trying to catalog my Texas cookbook collection. I've done 60 or so of them with about 40 more to go. Some of these books are just wonderful. Wish I had time to try a few of them out.

Jane glad you have the pool right there to swim in. I'm sure you'll figure out a way to swim laps.
Oh I am swimming laps and doing my PT exercises. The water is great and so far I have been the only one there. I love it.

The best news is the check I've been waiting for from the last federal case I did came in today. I submitted it 5 weeks ago. It's enough to cover me for taking time off. What a relief
Excellent!
Do you have a special, after surgery, list of food to stock up on? I expect you will have a limited menu at first.
-
Gorgeous view, DR Jane!!!!
Thank you.

Watching the 8th season of Foyle's War. I love this series. And this current episode, about Brits after World War II who are trying to keep anti-Semitism thriving, is excellent. One of the best.
We still have that one to watch.
-
Back from second meeting and then some food.

Very good news, Cillaliz!

Topic of the Day:
The only neighborhood restaurants that I can remember were probably McDonald's and Shakey's Pizza. ::)
