Title: THE CURIOUS CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING DESKTOP

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were curious and disappeared, and now it is time for you to post until the curious cows come home.

Good morning, all.

Yes, I think we're in for some rain.  My weather thing says scattered thunderstorms during the afternoon, but it's quite overcast out there right now.  I gave the central a/c the night off, opting for open windows and fans -- which felt damn nice and relaxing for a while, but by morning it's feeling pretty damp in here.  I'll wait for the day to heat up a little bit then lock the house down and turn the system back on.  Can't live with it, can't live without it.  I'm actually an a/c nut -- gotta have it -- but I love me my fresh air, too.  What we've got out there now isn't what I'd call fresh.

That was an overly long post about weather, and, if you ask me, a rather boring one.  I hope everyone skipped down to this one, which is much more erudite.

Well, I've got to say that BK's discovery of those vintage clips of L.A. and NYC and Vegas and other places is quite significant.  I spent a lot of time at it, and will be spending much more.  Of course the L.A. ones are the most near and dear to the ol' heart, but they're all essential viewing if you know a place at all.

There are many things one can comment on, but it's overwhelming.  Just a few observations:

BK notes that these are shot late at night after most of the movie theater marquees are dark, but what's interesting is how many other signs and storefront lights are still ablaze.  And how damned lucky we are, because they're all quite incredible, and they lent such color to street life then.  Except in certain circumstances (Times Square, Las Vegas, etc.), it isn't just the movies that got small -- it's the signage and the sense of excitement about the things of everyday life.  Like I said when we found that Miracle Mile clip several weeks back, the design of stores, restaurants, and theaters made you want to be around them and patronize them.  They attracted you, got you interested.  That kind of commercial architecture and signage are lost arts.

Another thing is how our memories, as precious and wonderful as they are, do in fact rearrange things.  Not a lot (hopefully!), but I've been finding that with the detailed memories that I pride myself on, the oddest mistakes do creep in over the years.  So this kind of photographic evidence, for me, is not only beautiful and evocative in its own right -- it's essential in correcting things that go astray.

I'm amazed that BK found a Stats where I remembered that coffee shop near Doheny.  I was NEVER positive it had been a Stats.  I don't recall it being very large, but I also can't swear to having been in other Stats locations either (anyone know how long they were around?) for comparison.  An incredible find.  Details, man.  They're incredible.

I was also loving that mid-century style of a solid raised structure as an integral part of a building which would house a restaurant's sign, Lawry's being the prime (ha ha) example.  That's still part of that building today (with "The Stinking Rose" in small lettering), and it looks like total CRAP in comparison with the colorful Lawry's sign and logo from that clip.  Of course, it doesn't help that it's so common nowadays to whitewash a nice brick structure like that one.  Gee, how inventive -- a white slab with small ordinary lettering on it.  Wow.  Makes me want to go there.

Idiots.

Another in that style, which I didn't know myself but I learned it from BK and found a picture or two, was Dick Webster's.  The Miracle Mile had a nice example or two, as well.

I didn't notice Ollie Hammond's in that film clip.  Or am I simply not recognizing it?  How far up from Lawry's was it?  I've been thinking just one or two buildings to the north.

Also, thank you for the shout-out on the Beverly Hills Cafe, BK.  And that record store!  I'm sorry I didn't know it.  The intersection wasn't even recognizable without the (I forget the name) modern oval office building there.  But that store...

Wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles, we turned off our AC and opened the windows last night!  Richard wanted to fumigate the house of all his cold germs.  Looks like we'll be able to use nature's air conditioning until tomorrow - unless the humidity gets to be too much.

I was going to ask BK if there are any interior photos of Coffee Dan's, meaning the one on Hollywood near Highland.  Though I've searched before, I just looked again and stumbled upon this astounding photograph for the first time (scroll down to second post):

http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=170279&page=870

Unless I'm having the world's largest brain fart, I don't remember ever knowing about that one.  I DO remember BK once thinking there had also been a Coffee Dan's near Vine St., if not right on it.  But the address, 1511 N. Vine, is just north of Melrose -- and that building is Wallich's, isn't it?

Okay, here's the deal.  Search on 1511 Vine Street and you get Vine at Sunset.  Search on 1511 N. Vine Street and it's Vine at Melrose.  Good lord.

Is 1511 Vine and N. Vine on an intersection?  Sunset crossing Vine and becoming Melrose?
Title: Re: THE CURIOUS CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING DESKTOP

Sunset and Melrose run east and west, parallel, about a mile apart.  Vine runs north and south, crossing them.

From Bruce:
And here is what has become of my father's restaurant at 3474 W. 8th Street - should be a head on view of "grand opening" - at least they've cleaned it up - I may have to go down there and check it out :)  If you drag the view to the right looking west you'll see a corner yellow building next to a red building - that whole thing was called Carl's Market - there's a beauty salon next to the restaurant - that was a barber shop, where my father got his haircuts once a week.  If you drag to the left the corner building at the other corner was the drugstore where I bought all my paperback books.

https://www.google.com/maps/@34.057667,-118.306018,3a,75y,181.5h,84t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sXbQzv32h53lY3ug0tKF5bw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

Drag the view to the left corner where the drugstore was and turn right onto Hobart.  You will see the parking lot for the "drugstore".  To the left of that, 809 So Hobart, was my father's office.  It was in a house that he and another doctor converted into a very nice office in 1969.  It was far more attractive than it is today.

Lunchtime!  Then I'm going to bake cupcakes for my book group.  They're coming here tomorrow evening to discuss THE ASTRONAUT WIVES CLUB and I'm serving things like they would have had at their "launch watch parties."  It's not a meal event, so we're just having layered Jello (red, white, & blue, of course) and cupcakes stuck with little American flags.

To the right  down a couple of blocks on West 8th Street was my father's first office.  I don't remember the address but I'm pretty sure it was on the left just after the fork in the road.   I spent many hours counting pills in the little back room.  My father always took me out to lunch where I had the best Shirley Temples with extra, extra, maraschino cherries.

Basically, without knowing it, I had a connection to Bruce most of my childhood, yet we never crossed paths until high school.

I have no idea if there were other restaurants to eat in the area.  My father either went to the Kiaru or ate delicious lunches my mother packed for him.

Has anyone here seen the video from Paris of the fireworks at the Eiffel Tower yesterday (Bastille Day)?  They are awesome.

They are indeed!

Here's a link to a very brief compilation clip, for those who haven't seen it:

Apropos DR Ron Pulliam's post earlier...

Does anyone know the story of Frank Sinatra's recording of "Strangers in the Night."
What's with the "DOO BEE DOO BEE DOO" section??     ???

I'd read that he sang, "Scoo Bee Doo Bee Doo" at some point and that's how Scooby Doo got his name.

I hope this doesn't mean that you have lost any critical files.

I did a backup last night but I don't know how to connect the backup to this Macbook.  I may take it down to a Mac Shop on West 20th Street and see if they can get it working again.  I need a fucking job so I can afford a new computer.  I don't have the money with these tidily jobs trickling in.

And I need a new computer.  I think my big computer just gave up the ghost.

Damn.

I'm getting closer to needing a new computer.  I had to update several things last night, and I couldn't update a couple because updates are no longer available for Windows XP.

I used to stand at the bar (before the doors opened for the lunch crowd) and eat those cherries like crazy.  The Kiru was something special - there just aren't many places like it left, especially with that quality food.

Of course, I'd much rather have eaten here - I would have ordered a salad with oily roquefort dressing, the Jumbo Jim burger with extra Z sauce and the Suzie-Q fries.  Located one block west of La Cienega on Wilshire and directly across the street from the Fine Arts theater.

I am gallbladder and appendix -less.   My surgeon explained to my family that I had some inflammation of my appendix and that was likely part of the problem I've been having.   It was a little slow going coming out of it, but after I got sick on the nurse all was well.  Bet she won't leave someone without a barf bag or one of those little trays again

I gotta say, it's incredible how these procedures and surgeries happen these days.

I had my appendix out at age eight.  I'd had an attack one evening, the family doctor made a house call and determined that's what the problem was, and they checked me into the hospital the next day.  I guess the surgery was the following day, but I was in there for three or four days after.  One thing that delayed my getting out was that I'd popped a stitch trying to climb the walls during recovery from the anesthetic.  They didn't catch why the incision kept bleeding.  Finally they did and wheeled me back up to the operating room to put a couple of staples in (I remember that, and screaming bloody murder), and a day or two later I went home.  But even without that complication, it was normal to have a "hospital stay" for anything like that.

So now you can go in for a gall bladder, throw in an appendix, and still be at home eating and watching TV and posting later in the day.
