OK, this is a really stupid question, but here goes:

If your cellphone is turned off, of course callers can still leave a voice message. But would calls show up on your call log, or as "missed calls," if the phone was off?

DR TCB's post last night just made me wonder.

I watched Inside Daisy Clover once, many years ago. About the time that the 3-CD audio set came out, I think.

Funny, I have no recollection of Robert Redford or Ruth Gordon even being in it.

I ended up letting THE WORLD OF HENRY ORIENT play all the way through.  I was doing a couple of things and so wasn't paying full attention, but I was nevertheless charmed and will watch it properly very soon.

I have a sketchy history with this one.  I would like to think that I went to see it when it came out, but I'm not at all sure I did.  I'd catch it playing on TV over the years but never enjoyed seeing it that way.  Later, if the likes of TCM showed it, I'd give it a chance but invariably would find myself not in the mood.  Well, that's all behind me now because this Blu-ray is wonderful.  I totally love the movie and its characters and the generous NYC location shooting, and that little theme by Elmer Bernstein is catchy and just perfect.

I've just decided that what I'll do next is view it along with the new commentary.  Yes, that's the ticket.

I'm almost positive I never saw INSIDE DAISY CLOVER, which is also a little odd.  I wonder if I'd recognize any of the music from it.

Good morning, all!  I have been up for several hoursd, dealing with computer cleanup, a copyist situation I must resolve today, and discontent.  I need to trash a lot of music in my iTunes, so that has occupied most of my morning, but my copyist on Gentlemen, Be Seated! is going off for about two months to another job, and I'm debating putting the project on hold or recommending the job be moved to another copyist who helped me with The Golden Apple since I'm on a roll and want to keep working.

I also have to schlep my modem up to the Time Warner office at 96th Street and Broadway to replace it.  That's my day.

Things are back to abnormal around here....so that is a GOOD thing.

Tonight is performance six of THE BAD SEED.  Last night was a good show, with a couple of line bobbles.....but a very good and sizable audience.

Tonight a lot of friends who are in INTO THE WOODS are attending, so hopefully they will enjoy it....if one can "enjoy" a play about a grade school age murderess.

TOD:

Not a thing in my CD player at the moment.  That, in itself, is most strange and unusual since I have piles and piles of unlistened-to CDs gathering dust.

I will say that after reading BK's comments about "Inside Daisy Clover", I can not only agree with what he wrote but also acknowledge that I, too, saw the film in its first release...several times, taking different folks to see it to observe their reactions.   I bought the soundtrack the moment I saw it in the record store.   I have both the mono and stereo LPs.  And then years ago, Film Score Monthly issued every single note of music ever recorded for the film (to my knowledge) in a splendid, marvelous, too-wonderful-for-words 2-CD*   (http://www.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm/ID/12199/INSIDE-DAISY-CLOVER/) soundtrack that was the end-all, be-all for Daisy Clover fans.  It was my go-to gift for many friends for the next year.

Andre Previn was a truly splendid composer for film.  He has consigned ALL of his Hollywood work to the trash heap, although my opinion of his own classical work is that it is imminentely forgettable while his Hollywood work is among the best EVER done by anyone...both original work and adaptation.

*You can hear sound samples at this site.  Follow instructions in right-hand column.

Post by: ChasSmith on July 17, 2015, 09:40:29 AM
Based on the admittedly little I've heard of Previn's classical orchestral recordings, he was a boring as hell symphonic conductor.  Not that that fault wasn't shared by other brilliant film composer/conductors.  Bernard Herrmann's classical forays were kind of 'eh', as were some of his own film re-recordings.

But at least he made those re-recordings.  This being about Previn...I once skimmed through a slim book of his memoirs, and the way he dismissed his Hollywood career was just disheartening.

DR TCB's post last night just made me wonder.

I don't have a smart phone, so it may be different, but when my phone is turned off and someone leaves a voice message, I don't get the "missed call" icon on my display because the call never comes to my phone.  I do get the "unheard voice mail" icon on my display, and that's what lets me know that there's a message.

After watching and listening to Donald Trump since he announced his candidacy (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/06/16/donald-trump-president_n_7595438.html) for president, we have decided we won't report on Trump's campaign as part of The Huffington Post's political coverage. Instead, we will cover his campaign as part of our Entertainment section. Our reason is simple: Trump's campaign is a sideshow. We won't take the bait. My eye doctor's office confirmed that I am exactly the same place with my left eye that I was my right eye at 24 hours.  His assistant called the memory trick to be a result of the "Wow" factor.  The first surgery gives you the vivid colors and the sharpness of shapes, so you tend to view (pardon the pun) the progress differently.

Actually everything looks wonderful now.

Since BK announced the Previn show, I've been listening to k.d. lang's album, Drag, which features her cover of the Valley of the Dolls Theme. I'll be listening to that and to Kern's score for Very Warm for May, which is just brilliant.

Ginny, the jello looks lovely. I'll have a Florida-sized portion.

Thanks, DR John G!  Did you notice that I had to put a toothpick in to keep the red layer of Florida from sliding off?

You should have put a mini-hurricane warning flag on the toothpick!

Thank you for keeping Florida from sliding into the ocean, DR Ginny.

You're welcome, DR ChasSmith!  During the cleanup, several chunks of red Jello slid onto the kitchen floor...

Title: Re: VAMP UNTIL READY
Post by: Ginny on July 17, 2015, 04:00:12 PM
DR TCB, I liked it, but some of our group members did not.  Betty thought it trivialized the women's lives.  There's a lot of fashion talk, too.  If you decide to read it, do so with an actual book.  It doesn't really lend itself to either an audio version or an e-book.

I'm going to try to take a nap now.  Pam said I don't look as good as I did yesterday and I don't feel as good.  I think a little more sleep may help

I was wondering what that was for. :)

My friends thought it was there to mark the location of Cape Canaveral.

Excellent news!
