Well, you've read the notes, the notes tickled your fancy, and now it it time for you to post until the fancy cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: OCTOTHORPE!
-
And why on earth has dear reader George become a WUSSBURGER - we could always count on his late-night postings, and he hasn't been doing that for days.
-
My excuse is that my big screen TV died. I would always watch my big screen TV while I was on the computer because they're in the same room. So now I can't ketchup on my TV watching while I'm on my computer. I have my standard-def TV up in my bedroom, but surfing the net and being on HHW on my tablet in my bed is neither that easy, nor very comfortable. Eventually, I will get a new TV, but I just haven't yet.
-
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Morning all.
That is all.

2 days down and 3 to go.
Things are OK downtown. Some construction is still being finished but otherwise work goes on.
The biggest thing to get used to is not going home for lunch anymore.

Good thoughts to you all, dear friends.

Good Morning! Looks like another long day just chock full of sunshine.
-
Well, it was bound to happen. I'm now bringing my lunch to work and I forgot it this morning. I can either eat it for dinner tonight or keep it and take it tomorrow. I'll probably just take it tomorrow since it will be one less thing to prep for the night before.
-
Well, I slept maybe three hours and will try to sleep four more, but my mind is awhirl with stuff about the book idea - it always happens.
-
I was there for that Florence Henderson performance - best thing that evening and I wrote about it in those notes. She was seventy-nine when it was taped. Sadly, the nice fellow who choreographed it died recently way too young, probably in his late 40s.
-
Seventy-NINE?

And on that note (a low D that I just swiped from Bernard Herrmann):
Good morning, all.

Vibes for DR JEANNE....most educational reading about your past couple of weeks.

My father is doing okay. He wants someone in his room 24/7 which is very difficult for all of us, but hopefully that will pass.

Tonight is our read thru for THE GAME'S AFOOT....we shall see what we shall see. My mother is being played by my best friend, Vickie.....it should be a lot of fun. We have done MANY shows together in various capacities....mostly with Vickie as director and me as her assistant. I also played roles in several of the shows....beginning in 1981..... But this is the first time we will be onstage together.
Here we are in 1982 at The Sound of Music....when we were doing shows outdoors...

And here we are at auditions last Sunday.

I am glad he is improving. Is it due to fear or boredom that he wants someone with him all the time?

morning afternoon greetings! How did that happen? I've been up since before 8, reading last Sunday's New York Times. We were able to turn off the AC and open the windows last night - ahhhh!

I hope you are right, DR JRand64! I'm getting sick of my existence.

Apparently we should have received a notification that they were testing the fire alarms this morning. The news is they are working but boy, did it give us a jolt.
-
That sure did give us a fright. Fortunately it didn't stay on too long. We suspected a workman outside hit something. When I went outside to inquire I caught the car with the people from the fire department leaving.
-
Got another two and a half hours of sleep then the phone rang. I am getting no less than ten of these spam calls a day. At one point I put myself on the "do not call" list - that worked really well apparently.
-
And they are getting more and more devious - the calls show up with just the phone number listed and frequently they are normal looking numbers from my area code.
-
The one nice thing about moving and getting a new number, they haven't caught up with us yet.
-
There were loopholes in the Do Not Call plan that, by now, have rendered the program almost useless.
Not to mention, I think spammers/telemarketers just don't care. They feel no threat. At least that's my impression.
-
Good afternoon, all.
-
I'll bet that none of the vintage LA restaurants we've been talking about for the past few days offered sandwiches on catloaf bread.
No, sirree.

I have some multi-region Geraldine McEwan "Miss Marples" to look at in Blu ray when I get home this evening. These are from Spain.
-
I love me my Miss Marples!
-
FWIW: I obtained "Murder on the Orient Express", "Death on the Nile", "Evil Under the Sun" and "The Mirror Crack'd" on Blu ray discs from Amazon.com. These are the Swedish multi-region issues.
They are beautiful.

All the Joan Hickson Miss Marples are now out on Blu ray via BBC Shops. Amazon.com also carries them (and at a lower cost). If you love the Joan Hickson Marples, they look simply grand!

I needed writing samples of my work (from a previous job) for a project I am applying for.
The PC hard drive that contained all the files crashed long, long ago. And the stick drives that contain the duplicate files are in a box that hasn't surfaced since the move. But a former colleague of mine came to the rescue, and downloaded everything I needed (over 30 large files!) into Dropbox, and now I have instantaneous access.
I really owe her one!

Good afternoon. My DH left this morning to visit his mother. So I thought it would be a good idea to give the bedroom a good cleaning while I can.

TOD:
Ask BK:
Have you, yourself, ever suffered from writer's block (and I don't mean your novel, Writer's Block)? Seeing that you always have so many creative ideas floating around in your cranium, I would guess not.
I haven't, but I don't even think that way. If I'm stuck on something or something isn't coming easily I do one of three things - I take a shower, I jog, or I just write even if it's not good - once I'm writing I always find my way then I go back and fix.
-
Back from a very good and productive lunch - I had eggs benedict. Picked up some packages including a copy of the Then and Now book by Ed Ruscha - had no idea how big it was - it's a little awkwardly laid out, but boy is it fascinating. The buildings that have been torn down in the thirty years between photos is heartbreaking, and what they've been replaced by (IF they've been replaced) is disgusting. In certain cases, like the Holly Movie theater and further east the Century, they simply tore the buildings down and replaced them with nothing. On the other hand, it's surprising what was still there in 2004. However, I suspect, well, I know that if this same route were travelled today it would be much more devastating in certain ways. For example, Hollywood and Western, which had some minor changes in 2004 is now not even recognizable - it's all huge malls.
-
A lot of the time where there were beautiful open spaces looking north, they're either now blocked by trees, bushes or buildings.
-

-
As horrible as the 2004 pictures look in comparison to the 1973, you should imagine my shock on driving up and down there in 2012, having not been in Hollywood since -- I think the mid-1990s. It was post-apocalyptic.
Of course now I look at those 2004 and think, you know, they could have STOPPED -- right then -- and reversed the devastation. Yep, in my dreams.
-
Not really, though, even then. Also, BK's Hollywood was the 1960s, which would make my 1970s look pretty piss-poor.

Yes, it's a shame they didn't do this every ten years - that would have been illuminating, because by 1973 it was over for Hollywood Blvd. and the devastation had already begun. I suspect the difference between 1963 and 1973 would have been something to see, although I'd also surmise that most of the buildings would have been the same. But in the thirty years since - disgusting. Most shocking, as I've said many times, is the almost complete obliteration of 99% of the gas stations - there were several between Fairfax and Hillhurst and i venture to say that today you could drive that entire stretch and not find a one. I know there's been a lot of tear downs as you get close to Western. And this horrible thing, even in 2004, of covering every house and building with shrubs and trees, literally hiding buildings and homes. People used to take pride in their homes and businesses. By 2003 all the beautiful shops with windows on the boulevard had had their windows replaced with those sliding up and down metal doors. Awful. It all could have been handled and gentrified so easily and beautifully, keeping the flavor of the street, but no, not possible in LA because the people who develop here have no sense of history because they aren't actually from here. They are, to me, foreigners and they should leave LA the HELL alone. It's also heartbreaking to see the southeast side of Hollywood and Vine - once the home of Drug King and quaint mom and pop stores that lined the street right down to the Pix - even in 2004 all the mom and pops had been torn down for the subway stop, but at least that subway stop was open and you could see straight down to Sunset. The whole damn thing is a W hotel (built around the subway station), one of the greatest monstrosities since Hollywood + Highland.

I'm very down today. About two hours ago the name of a friend I've not seen in around 17 years popped into my mind and i have been searching online for any trace of him. When he left New York, he was moving to Boston, but he could be anywhere in the states and no longer working in the theatre.

As for cost, they have to replace the clouded lens with something. If there's no vision correction, ie, refraction, done, then I think the new lens must be covered by Medicare. But when a corrective lens is used, then the patient must pick up that cost. If you opted to NOT have the corrective lens put in, then decided a few years later that you wanted it, you'd have to pay the full cost of the surgery--not just the lens.

So far my distance vision hasn't really been affected by the cataracts. It's working on the computer when I notice it. As I learned on Monday, I have two types of cataracts--the overall cloudiness that most people get, and also at least one dense spot. I don't know the terminology, but the problem occurs when light bounces off the clouded areas. Turning down the light on your computer screen can help. When you reach that point it's time to see an ophthalmologist.

Did a jog - I should probably go eat something - eggs benedict isn't enough for a whole day, and I'm quite over popcorn right now. So, perhaps a turkey sandwich would be a reasonable thing to eat.

The GD casino had another concert tonight. I am so sick of the noise. I'm hoping a tornado hits the outdoor stage and destroys it.....when no one is there....and no one gets hurt.....just the stage.
-
You would think from 3-4 miles away I wouldn't have to listen to it. At one point I went outside and dogs were barking like crazy. This is totally insane. I called and complained. "The police chief is keeping a list" I'm going to go talk to him tomorrow about this. They have a sound permit and the police chief can revoke it. Of course he won't because money talks, but I didn't hear a thing during the Head East concert, so they have the ability to turn the volume knob down. That's what irks me so much

I hadn't thought about that. I just checked and they do. They list two different brands, so I'll have to look around to see how their on-line prices compare with other on-line prices.
-
After work, I went to Best Buy to see what they had. When I was there, I called my sister's boyfriend to see how he felt about Memorex DVDs (that's all that Best Buy had) and it turns out that my sister and her boyfriend just happened to be at Office Depot. Both places has a 100-disc tower of Memorex DVDs but Office Depot had them for $5 less than Best Buy, so they bought me a tower.
-
I went to my sister's house after that and I paid them for it. This will be fine for now, but I'll see what other brands are available and compare prices.
