Is the TOD limited to musical adaptations of screenplays, or can we include shows where the movie was based on a novel, and the movie was the reason the musical was made?

I am making an effort to overcome this current bout with depression and discontent.  I dislike the inertia of my existence and I'm spending far too much time fretting about the situation. Perhaps visiting friends out of town will help.

First week in the new space is done and we (I) survived.

I have found my best commute and I will break it up with a walk once or twice a week (45 minutes from door to door).

Since I won't be going home for lunch anymore I will have more time to read as I eat my lunch. I've been bringing my reader with me and except for Monday I read for at least a half hour every day. That's relaxing.

You've got the heat now and we're getting it in the middle of the week.

One advantage to working in an office is being out of the heat. I know some people love it but the older I get the less tolerance I have for any kind of extreme heat, with or without humidity.

TOD:  I really don't go to see movie to stage adapted musicals.  The idea of wasting time going to see something like a FLASHDANCE or DIRTY DANCING onstage (when I wasn't that wild about the movies in the first) or a musicalized ROCKY or a half a dozen others I could name just seems utterly pointless to me.  These aren't musicals; these are a merely product with name-awareness branding to rake in the tourist dollar of people who know little about theatre and even less about musicals.
Title: Re: BREAKING NEWS

TOD:

Off-hand, I can only think of two movie-to-stage musicals that I've seen:

1. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, which I didn't really like.  Loved the movie, but the stage show was "padded" and reminded me of a circus act.

2. RAGTIME is one of my all time favorite musicals.  I wish they would make a movie of the musical version.

I am mostly ANNOYED by movie to stage musical adaptations.  There is really no reason for most of them.  And if they were musicals to begin with, the "new" songs seem like intrusions.....

One of the most egregious of these kinds of shows was FOOTLOOSE....although it is not alone its awfulness.

Good morning, all.

And a rather late one it is.  Friends and I sat through an okay but not great ARSENIC AND OLD LACE (except for the Teddy who was absolutely perfect) and then we partay-ed well into the night with the Mortimer (a good friend) and a couple of other people.

I'm blank as I try to recall which movie-to-musical shows I've seen, keeping strictly to BK's example, other than 9 to 5 itself.  Oh my god, I totally agree, it is horrible beyond belief.  And the community production I sat through had bad stuff going for it in addition to the material.  Just dreadful.  Other than that, I don't know.  I've managed to avoid most of them.  Some of them might be worthy, but in general they don't appeal to me.

Legally Blonde is the poster child for this discussion, whether you like it or not - it may be partly based on the novel, but its entire reason for existence is to call itself Legally Blonde and capitalize on that branding of the film.  Otherwise they would have called it something else - certainly they would have forty years ago like Promises, Promises.

Whereas as Ragtime is NOT the poster child for this - it really was based on the novel and that movie was never branded in any kind of way, plus it was not really part of this outrageous thing that's been going on for the last decade.

Tomorrow is the concert for the anniversary of the local theatre group. THAT I am looking forward to!

A related point could be that the show seemed to become even more popular live in the theater (on Broadway, tour and London) after the musical  was aired on TV and available on video.  Maybe that means we are in an environment where the familiar sells tickets, assuming the work itself is entertaining.

Doing a little searching, even though the movie was based on the novel, the book wasn't published until after the movie was released.  THIS (https://cinebrary.wordpress.com/2012/10/23/legally-blonde/comment-page-1/) article gives a convincing argument as to why the movie is actually better than the original book.  Just based on what the writer of the article says the book is like (since I never read it), I certainly agree with her.

Hmm, this new book ARMADA by Ernest Cline (which is way near the top of the best seller list) sounds plot-wise pretty much excatly like the film of THE LAST STARFIGHTER

Wonder if there's a way to sell LAST STARFIGHTER musical CD's (or even downloads):  Long before ARMADA, there was (with the same plot) - THE LAST STARFIGHTER,

or something like that  :)

I keep paying for the tickets in the hopes that they will have a really good season. Often they have a show or two worth seeing, but I'm not sure it is worth what I pay. The Torchlight Parade is better because all of the floats are lighted.

I'm sorry.  I know a lot of people love CATS.  And I know that it turned a lot of people onto Broadway musicals.

From all I heard about it, and the cat lover that I am, I expected the show to be great.  I disliked it.

Topic of the Day:  I found a couple of articles that list musicals based on movies, so that's where these came from and why there are so many.  Also, all are shows that I've actually seen:

Stage shows I've seen that I liked or thought were well done:
The Baker's Wife
Beauty and the Beast
Billy Elliot (I have the Blu-ray of the London production)
La Cage aux Folles
Cannibal! The Musical!
Carnival!
The Full Monty
Hairspray
The Last Starfighter
Legally Blonde
A Little Night Music
Little Shop of Horrors
Mamma Mia! (THIS (http://www.timeout.com/newyork/theater/moviemusicals) article about movie-to-musical adaptations admits that the plot is very similar to "Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell," so it lists it. ;) )
My Fair Lady
Passion
Reefer Madness
A Room With a View
The Spitfire Grill
Scrooge
Secondhand Lions
She Loves Me
Spamalot
Sunset Boulevard
Sweet Charity
Young Frankenstein

Stage shows that I didn't like or thought weren't done well:
A Wonderful Life

Honorable mention (shows that I liked but may not actually have been that great):
Catch Me If You Can
The Color Purple
Nite of the Living Dead! The Musical! (this was an original musical put on by Theater Artists Olympia several years ago. I was in it)
Shrek The Musical
Victor/Victoria (I got to see Julie Andrews live!)
Whistle Down the Wind
