Jimmy Fallon said that Carl Reiner has the distinction of being the only person to be a guest on every incarnation of The Tonight Show.  That's certainly a distinction. :)

I had one very strange and frightening moment with the ghost in the apartment last night.  I don't know if it were a dream or if I was nodding, but a large black shadow approached my bedside and leaned down, as if to embrace me.  I woke up in a terrible fright. I haven't been creeped out like that in a long time,

Today I will be working at the Minnesota State Fair. It's opening day, and I will be one of the people working the informational booth for the state health insurance exchange. The venue I am working in is inside, but no air conditioning. Thankfully, I don't think it is supposed to get above 80. And, of course, you can get almost any kind of food there is - on a stick. So there's that.

Well, my personnel skills continue and I've just lost a very good friend of more than 25 years.  What began last month as an inquiry into a show I worked on has turned into accusations of theft and demands for instant gratification. While I understand that his job may be putting tension on him, the hostility and accusations mean that I consider this friendship no longer one.

TOD:  I discovered the whole Big Band Era when, at a young age, I decided to share a record with my Dad to show him how cool my music was.  The record was SHADRACH by Brook Benton.  My dad listened to it, smiled, and said: "That's pretty good.  Now I want you to listen to something."  He went to an old record cabinet, pulled out a 78 record, and played it for me.  It was the same song, SHADRACH, played by Larry Clinton and his orchestra...and as cool as Brook Benton's version was, Clinton's version was infinitely cooler.  From that day on, I was raiding that record cabinet, discovering bands, singers, and songs from that era.

TOD:

Back when Bette Midler had a big hit with Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, there was an Andrews Sisters resurgence and a number compilation albums of their songs were released. I was still in 8th grade, if I recall correctly, and I flipped over a recording of "In the Mood" that they did with Glenn Miller that appeared on one of the albums. That song, that sound, that style really got to me. It led me to Miller's famous instrumental version, Artie Shaw's and eventually an appreciation of big band leaders in general.

I never owned that Andrews Sisters album. It belonged to a friend of my sister's. And I've never been able to find that particular recording ever since. I finally found one version of them singing In the Mood, but it just wasn't the same. And I think Glenn Miller was the reason why. He was a horrible actor, but I still love the early stereo recordings he did for Orchestra Wives and Sun Valley Serenade, plus the way the scenes with the band were filmed.

I believe it will.  I was angry this morning and hurt by his accusations, but apologies are important. I've made several apologies in my life that to my regret were not accepted, but I am grateful for the ones that were.  I believe that if the attacker had apologized after his hostile emails during the ROBERTA mess of Oct. 2013 the friendship would have continued.  It never came.  I know i can be difficult, but I will fight back if I'm attacked.

Here's another hope that this person has seen the light and done the necessary about-face in time to preserve the friendship.

It is unconscionable for a friendship to be compromised by any kind of misunderstanding, or from a sudden bizarre shit-fit (however legitimate) suffered by one of the parties.  I've had to learn that myself, and I am only too happy to have regular reminders of it.

VIBES that this one continues, and with even stronger bonds.

Two days ago, I was completely oblivious to the heinous schemes of my boss.

Today I am faced with preparing three letters for our Board of Supervisors.  They must be completed by COB tomorrow.  For me, COB tomorrow is Noon...board letters or no board letters.

We had a memo a few weeks ago telling us that Board Letters must be submitted on time and they must be complete.

The day before is not "on time", IMO.  But, as long as all the pieces are given to me, I'll prepare the packages.

What a night, what a morning, what an afternoon, not necessarily in that order.  I couldn't fall asleep and at three I got up and wrote two very strong e-mails.  I went back to bed and finally fell asleep at five.  At eight-thirty I was awakened by the sounds of machinery.  I got up but couldn't find the source, even though it was in front of my way too groggy eyes.  Yes, the source was what I had hoped it wouldn't be - Annette's house is gone as if it never existed at all - raised by some asshole developers or a buyer so they erect another monstrosity in this neighborhood, so their entitled, privileged children can got to Carpenter school.  Once those children are out of there, they will move to the next neighborhood.  This will undoubtedly be a two-million dollar house in a quaint neighborhood that, thanks to these morons, is no longer quaint.

Then I had what was for me an unpleasant and long conversation regarding the e-mail I sent.  This all has to do with the Sami show and I have been respectful about bringing it onto this site and will continue to leave it off.  But I was ready to pull the plug on the show this morning.  We're going to try a new approach on Saturday and if it works we'll continue apace.  But I'm thinking NY is really in question now.  Then I had an equally long conversation with our wonderful musical director, who feels much as I do but much stronger.

That's terrible.

Great story.

Very sorry to read your news, Elmore. I hope the friendship can be repaired at some point in the future.

I believe everything is okay now, and I got a very kind apology;  I hopefully will not lose this longtime friendship.

I am pleased to read this, and lucky I didn't have long to find out your positive news.

I went to an early lunch with a few women in my building.  It was very nice.  We drove over the bridge and ate along the water and watched all the boat and river traffic.  It is much busier there than here.  We get the sailboats though which I prefer.

The Argentinian or Brazilian equivalent of Florence Foster Jenkins posts on the Facebook musicals page; besides having English as a problem, she has a problem with common sense.

If I see her name, I don't even bother to read her posts. On top of it all, she's a Kelli O'Hara disciple.

What is it about these topics that bring them out?  There's always someone who has to comment on everything everyone says or who knows everthing about everything (and doesn't) or who makes no sense at all.

There's a JE who is irritating beyond belief, full of almost accurate info, and lots of boasts about his plays, his definitive direction, his knowledge of Brecht and Weill, and all I see is that he's all talk and nothing else.

Completely demented and too full of himself.  Most people i know on FB cannot stand him.  He sent me a friend request and I complied.  then his posts were so continuously flaming, rude, and embarrassingly gay, i dropped him. So far, all I have seen him prove is that he loves to "improve" audiotapes to the point of inaudibility.

And now for something completely different.  A friend of mine posted this on FB:

Quote
A car full of Irish nuns is sitting at a traffic light in downtown Dublin, when a bunch of rowdy drunks pull up alongside of them.

"Hey, show us yer teets, ya bloody penguins!" shouts one of the drunks.

Quite shocked, Mother Superior turns to Sister Mary Immaculata and says, "I don't think they know who we are; show them your cross."

Sister Mary Immaculata rolls down her window and shouts, "Piss off, ya fookin' little wankers, before I come over there and rip yer balls off!"

Sister Mary Immaculata then rolls up her window, looks back at Mother Superior, quite innocently, and asks, "Did that sound cross enough?

:))

Act Two of Finding Neverland is worse than the first. There's a song about the second star from the right that's so banal, that you long for the version in the Disney film. Then there's some noise that sounds like rejected drum beats from Pippin. Blech.

BK, does that mean if it's nominated and wins that you won't get the award, or does it mean that you would you have to share it?

It doesn't have a shot at winning.  I don't know how it would work actually, as I'm the only credited by name producer - the executive producer credit is to a company.  But since I'd be giving the album back, I'm not sure it can even be nominated via Kritzerland now, so I'll call NARAS and get the story.
