Title: THE HILLS ARE OCCASIONALLY ALIVE
Post by: bk on September 30, 2015, 12:51:31 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes, like the hills, were occasionally alive, and now it is time for you to post until the occasional cows come home.

I'm still up, but I've been home for a couple of hours.  After last night's rehersal, the director, the stage manager, the assistant stage manager, the sound designer, and I all stayed for about an hour and a half readjusting things, making more specific notes in scripts, adding a few more sound cues, adjusting the lengths of some sound cues, etc.

At first, it seemed like I probably could've left after the show was over, but I'm glad I stayed.  We got a lot of good work done.  At least as far as the sound cues go, we got to work on some of the details that you never get a chance to work on during a regular rehearsal.

I enjoyed the notes since my friend Ben Davis is playing Captain von Trapp. He was signed to record ROBERTA and then forced out by City Opera, I think the young man we finally cast, Patrick Cummings, was quite wonderful, so it worked out.

I'm not a big Ashley Brown fan and I deplore this trend of casting a Broadway person as the Mother Abbess and other R&H singing older women like Nettie in CAROUSEL; she's a mother figure to Maria and needs a voice with the heft of Patricia Neway or Birgit Nillson. Why is it the people casting these days never seem to listen to cast albums to hear what the composer chose?

Thank you, BK, for helping me come up with the subtitle on this one.

If you've been considering purchasing one of my last 3 Hollywood-based stage plays, collectively titled THE HOLLYWOOD SCANDALS, you will be happy to learn that all three are now available in one anthology, THE HOLLYWOOD SCANDALS: Three Plays About Tinseltown's Dark Side.

The price of this new volume is less than the cost of two of the plays if you purchased them individually.

The plays that we're talking about are B MOVIE, which deals with the sordid Franchot Tone/Barbara Payton/Tom Neal "lust triangle; SEXY REXY, the story of Rex Harrison and the women in his life, including actresses Carole Landis and Rachel Roberts, both of whom committed suicide; and LANA & JOHNNY WERE LOVERS, the story of superstar Lana Turner and her mobster boy friend, Johnny Stompanato.

The anthology is available in both paperback and Kindle editions.

I saw a regional production of The Sound of Music. No curtain so we walk into the theater and see the Von Trappe villa right away. I think there was drop and set pieces for the convent. It was hard to tell the age of Mother Superior. Maria and the Captain were married to each other in real life so their believable factor as they fall in love was real. The kids cast locally were all very good and Elsa and Max were very good. I was glad to see she wasn't the bitch in the way Eleanor Parker played her in the film. It may have been the actor or the way he was directed but I found him too fey. It may have been the film factor here, but he did well with comedic lines

Very much enjoyed the detailed notes on the production, and am heartened to hear that there were some things to like about it.

Sixteen going on seventeen musicians, eh?  (And I wonder how many of those were on keyboards.)  Not enough for this show.

Agree with BK and DR Elmore on the Mother Abbess casting and sound handling things.  Why, Lord?

I've been fretting about this all morning. For the past three years he's sent Christmas cards to which I've not responded, and the last time I was in Ohio, I let him know through Randy that I did not want to see him.

I am bothered by this request since I'm sure part of it is Lady M's wish to see me fall on my face or, if it goes well, to pump her own vanity by letting everyone know she's my sister-in-law. On M's part, I'm sure he sees this as one more round of restoring a broken relationship, and I weep for that, but there's unexpected bad blood and resentment there that popped up in 2006, and I will no longer be his bowling pin to set up and knock over on his nasty whim.

The Macbeths have NO business slinging their drama into what is YOUR moment to shine. Even if it is well-intentioned. Which I doubt.
But this is your conference, and before your presentation, you should just be focused on that.

A big thank you to all at HHW for the thoughts, vibes, and prayers for my family and myself.

THEY ARE APPRECIATED MORE THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE.

Viewing and service will be Friday afternoon and evening.  The service we chose with all the "extras" is only about $2000 more than the insurance, so that will be helpful dollar wise.

I would encourage anyone who can to look into a policy that will help cover these final expenses because things cost a LOT.

I enjoyed reading about TSOM.....I think my friend Darren Matthias is on this particular tour.....

I love a front curtain, too.

I like the show AND the movie - and I really like to work on the show.  Why change things?  It works like gangbusters if you do what's on the page.  You bring a lot of audience goodwill because of the movie, and that can be eroded quite quickly if you start playing around with it.

As Moss Hart said about George Cukor's direction of A STAR IS BORN (if I remember correctly): "The firm, firm hand on the wrong, wrong note."

I know.  Agreeing to see your brother later might get them off your back.  I wish they had left you alone.  Respinding sooner than later might make it eadier for you to put them aside, in your mind, and focus on the good parts of your trip.  Good it will be :)

I was halfway expecting him to show up at Randy's house over the weekend and force some sort of confrontation, and if i had to deal with it, i would deal with it. i never expected the email of this morning and it bothers me because, even though he's once again attempting some sort of rapprochement, his frustration over my refusal to deal with his attempts to kiss and make up could lead to some real ugliness - perhaps violence - on his part. What I would prefer are no scenes, no conflict, and no confrontation.

A troubling situation that has no good or easy answer or solution. If you can avoid dealing with it at least until after your presentation, that would be ideal; but it doesn't sound like that may be possible here.       :P

Well, I had exchanged messages back and forth with friends, one in Austin and another visiting Austin, about getting together for lunch today. I even took an extra day off work to do it. I find out, as I sat down to lunch at the agreed upon place, that the one from Austin thought it was for dinner and the other thought it was tomorrow. I feel like I've wasted the day. I never want to see either of them them again. Ever!

Well, then that's your answer.

You're right!  Thanks.

Since they asked, you could just respond and tell them that you do not want them to go and leave it at that.  You don't have to explain. You don't have to tell them you never want to see them or even deal with any of it right now. They asked the question so I'd just answer it. No need to make it more drama than that.

Maybe the Macbeths suddenly realized you were more important than they'd realized all the years, nd they want to be part of your glory.  That would be a "Macbeth" thing to do.

Which is why it might be best to put him off until after your presentations, and then agree to see him.

Can Randy and his wife help run interference?

I don't know.  They both hate Lady M.  We all hate Lady M!!!

I'm going to call him tonight.

MAJOR VIBES!

Except for a few small purchases.

Frustrating, and odd they both had the wrong time.

As expected, my eyes were dilated and are still a little blurry.  I had Avery thorough exam and liked the new doctor.  I have a new glasses prescription, but will go bake when I can see well enough to pick out frames.

If the Macbeths do not kill me by Wednesday, so will I.  And Randy and Jo, although it's late for her; she's usually in bed by 8 and up around 5:30.

Danny Burstein and Rebecca Luker had quite prominent roles on Law and Order:SVU, where they played the parents of a character named Avery.

Wrote the first third of the commentary - because this is a somewhat personal show, the commentary seems to be running longish, but I'll just keep writing it as I want to, then see if I need to make cuts, which I usually do anyway.
