Tomorrow morning the choir will be singing "Appalachian Lord's Prayer." It's got the traditional words, of course, but an original wide-open, folk-like melody. I think of DR elmore3003 every time I see the title.

Saturday morning greetings!  Starting at noon, it's a football-on-TV day in our household.  First up, Michigan at Penn State (Go, Blue!).  Then, Michigan State at Ohio State.  Now, I'm supposed to dislike both teams, but I'd sure love to see the the Buckeyes lose this one...

DR JOHNG - "Arcadia" was most enjoyable last night.  There were no slow talkers, so the play was over at 10 p.m. which is great.

It was nice to see some of the kids I've worked with at DePauw in some very interesting roles.

Lovely set and nice music.  One girl spoke so fast that I could understand her, and there was a lot of turning and talking upstage.....but it was done "thrust" style, so even if I couldn't see faces, the people on the sides could.

I like the play a lot, and it was very interesting.  The one draw back was the woman sitting in front of her us - I heard her talking to the director before the play and telling her that she herself had played the part of the mother.  She laughed long and loud at many things....some funny, some not....

I've been listening to Nino Rota's comic opera Il Capello di Paglia Firenze (The Italian Straw Hat), which is quite lovely. Not as good as Verdi's Falstaff, which may be the best comic opera ever, but nicely scored and very tuneful.  i'd like to see a production.

TOD:Too many of Mom's creations.

One is called a chocolate surprise cooking. The base is a chocolate-peanut butter cookie that you bake; halfway through, you top the cookie with half of a large marshmallow. Then when it's finished baking and had a chance to cook, you frost it with a coffee-chocolate glaze. They're scrumptious.

Another is the rum tart, which she would roll out to a paper-thin width, then use cutters to create whatever shape she wanted. Once the cookies had baked and were cool, she would sandwich homemade raspberry jam between two of the cookies then top it with a rum glaze.

German cinnamon stars, which I still get for Christmas, are simple yet irresistible. Russian tea cakes (aka Mexican wedding cookies) have plenty of butter and pecan pieces (some then roll the balls in powdered sugar, but I find that too sweet). German Springerle, which have anise in them and are pressed into a mold so they have pictures on them, are perfect with coffee. Gingerbread.

Many of these are happy memories. Mom can't bake all of her old favorites anymore because of arthritis. I don't care much for making cookies. I prefer cakes. Less work.

TOD:
I don't know who invented the white chocolate macadamia nut cookie, but that person was a friggin' genius. I think it was Mrs. Fields who first sold them and they caught on like wild fire and now everyone makes them. They've come out with milk chocolate macadamia nut cookies and dark chocolate macadamia nut cookies, but they're simply not as good. And I'm not even a big fan of white chocolate, but something about that combination is heavenly.
I like practically every other cookie on the planet too. I like them soft or hard - I'm just a big cookie lover in general.

I am not really into hip-hop, so I just deleted all of the "Hamilton" songs featuring rap from my iTunes playlist.

That still left enough songs for about two regular musicals.

I'll bear that in mind. Still haven't heard the score.

The mailman dropped off Robert Goulet's Christmas albums today. When he's not being too cheesy, most of the songs are enjoyable. His most interesting choice is Each Christmas from Promises, Promises, which sounds so different from the original. Very lovely song.

Thank you DR CHAS SMITH - many MANY Kritzerland CD's have become very valuable over the years.....I have made sure that my youngest sister knows that for the time when I shuffle off this mortal coil.

They may help pay for my send off.

I have most of the Kritzerland CDs, also.  I know that many are available for sale for a lot of money, but I always wonder if those expensive second market CDs actually sell for those amounts. :-\

Amy, I totally agree with you about the white chocolate-macadamia nut cookies, and I'm not a big fan of macadamia nuts...but I love those cookies, too!

This is really shocking.  I knew John when he was in the New York City Gay Men's Chorus, and he was my dentist around 1985 or so. I had to stop seeing him when the Drama Book Shop changed insurance providers and i lsot my dental insurance.  I can honestly state that the person charge for these crimes in this article is not the man I knew 30 years ago.

Toward the end of every year I get into the mood to toss out all I don't need and to clean and reorganize accordingly. I'm in that mood now. I spent a couple hours the other day going through part of what's in the linen closet, my catch-all for all and sundried. Things pile up so quickly; it's not as if I never throw anything out! So now one small piece is done. Lots more left to do. I doubt that I'll get to it all, but the more I do the better. I used to be sooo organized!

He was a friend, and I believe every NYCGMC member who knew John when he sang with the Chorus is completely in shock today. He really was a wonderful dentist - I remember his fight to treat AIDS patients, which I admired - and he sent me to a fantastic periodontist.  If the Book Shop owners hadn't constantly screwed over the employees with health insurance, I might still be seeing him as a patient.

I am aware that much can change in 25-30 years, but I swear I neither saw nor heard rumors of drug issues, pedophilia, or anything.

You would not expect someone to change that much, especially the difference of helping AIDS patients and spreading the disease.

This morning Keith had me test his side of the bed, before I made it, to see how it felt.  Again I could not stop laughing it feels so strange.  I is funny and strange if you lie on your back.  If you roll to the right you just about roll off the bed, something I don't want to experience.  Rolling to my left is a battle as it is uphill.

All in all it is a very funny sensation ;D

The Met's last one, directed by John Dexter. was wonderful.  it's on DVD.

I have both that and Wozzech. I don't think I have ever watched either. And I really should.

I love the Berg operas.  I have only the vaguest memories of the Dexter LULU from the telecast years ago.  I probably have an audio cassette recording or two, and I will make a point of ketchuping on the DVDs.

I had read or heard nothing about this production, so every single thing about it was a surprise, and for the most part I liked it.  It's fairly stunning, but I think it must be even more so, seen without the incessant close-ups.

Every one of their productions I've seen via "HD Live" has been great, but also frustrating for the lack of getting back a little and letting us enjoy some of the scope that the live audience is treated to.

I remember how technically limited the early PBS telecasts were, even though we were thrilled to get them.  Now, throughout the past couple of decades, I haven't been able to shake the feeling that with all of the superior technical feats possible, a huge over-correction is made when it comes to camera shots, which ironically prevents us (or me, if it's just me) from much of the jaw-dropping appreciation of what the entire company is doing at any given time.

Anyhoo, thanks, Mrs. Lincoln, the production and the performances were wonderful.  I'd be very tempted to catch it again.

Back from yet another Broadway Cabaret evening. But this is one that I was not performing in; just an audience member. It was fun.

Cleaning and thinking vibes for DR ELMORE.

We are expecting snow this afternoon....but not much in the way of it staying around......we shall see.  Certainly it will be nothing like what DR CILLA LIZ got yesterday!

We only got about 6 inches here. Not far away they got 15 inches.  It wasn't bad but there is a layer of ice under the snow, so that's a problem

I'm trying to channel DR Cillaliz.  ;)

You're ahead of me now. I've thought about cleaning out my closets.....then I decided to stop thinking about it.

Thanks, Cilla, she was very lucky.  I can't believe that the airbags did not deploy.

Air bags are directional now.  When I had my bad accident, the side airbags worked but the front ones didn't deploy. I was told it was because the front of the car didn't get hit

Finally getting around to watching Billy Elliott. It's really quite good.

Did anybody watch it on PBS? Did they cut out all of the cursing?

It's rather funny because the DVD from the library is from France and the rating on the back is G and it says it's OK for small kids. Small kids who drop f-bombs, I guess. Which is, admittedly, most kids I've been around these days.

Laura, do you know of any differences between dragonflies here and abroad? My dance teacher, who is tiny, was saying that the dragonflies in China, where she's from, are far larger than they are here. More dragon-like.

I had to read that to Keith.  Since he is a Twinkie fan he appreciated the story :)

The forecast for Thanksgiving day is not good.   Mixed rain sleet and snow.   So, I'm going to go get a turkey and have it cut in half lengthwise.  I won't go if the weather is bad and I can roast the turkey and make thanksgiving here.   I would be fine with that.

Oh and I'll freeze the other half of the turkey so I can eat it sometime in the middle of the winter when comfort food sounds really good

I bought the Blu-ray from England last year.  How did your library get a DVD from France?  Wouldn't that make it a region 2 DVD?

I could freeze them too.   I've been in a real freezing stuff mood.  I made chili and froze half, made chicken and noodles and froze half.   I'll be good to go on lunches and easy dinners on night I don't want to cook
