Title: CATCHING UP

Well, you've read the notes, you've caught up on the notes, you've berated up for being on the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the caught up cows come home.

I'll list two for starters:

"The Legend Of 1900" and "The Milagro Beanfield War".
Neither is known well in this country and they are two movies I can watch reasonably often. Perhaps both a slow paced for the movie goers who like action - It is the pace that I like. (The reason I like so many European movies).  The scores of  both movies are worth a listen too.

Beautiful photo, Tom!

And why am I still up? (Oh no - I've given away my real identity. Now bk will now that it is I - Panni aka Up - whom he tried to catch on his work.)
My favorite obscure movie is DREAMCHILD, starring Coral Browne as the elderly Alice Liddell and Ian Holm as Rev. Charles Dodgson aka Lewis Carroll. Screenplay by Dennis Potter. A wonderful, wonderful film.

Dennis Potter is very much missed. A reminder DR Panni - check out Stephen Poliakov (sp). IMHO the best TV writer since Potter.

Oh MR BK - as DRDANISE and I can tell you, Grayson Hall whom you saw in NIGHT OF THE IGUANA is the wife of Mr Sam Hall one of the writers of DARK SHADOWS.  She appeared regularly on that soap as Julia.

Hmmmmm this website dedicated to Grayson Hall includes a special thanks to Guy Haines!   ;D

I will have to consider some of my obscure movies....but I will start out with COUNT THREE AND PRAY recently viewed by DRJAY.

It stars Van Heflin and Joanne Woodward in her motion picture debut.  The supporting cast includes Raymond Burr, Nancy Kulp, Phil Carey, Jean Willes, and Allison Hayes.

You mean as Dr. Julia Hoffmann.  As I recall, it wasn't until very much later into the run of the show that anyone referred to her as simply "Julia".  It took a looong time for any of the other characters to warm up to her.

But be that as it may, I loved her on Dark Shadows and in her too few other film and TV appearances (She was also in That Darn Cat.)  In her soap roles, she could mug with the best of them but then deliver finely nuanced performances in Iguana and in bizzare TV movies like Gargoyles.   And she was also in the original cast of Subways Are For Sleeping and in the Meryl Streep Happy End on B'way.  I never understood why she didn't have more of a career than she did.

Good morning, all!  24 hours now and counting . . .

Dear Friend BK, I knew Grayson Hall, and she was a sweet lady, perhaps a bit mad, and I loved her gaunt features.  I met her through Leonora Hays, wife of David Hays set designer, founder of National Theatre of the Deaf, and sailor (their son wrote a book about sailing the world with David, MY OLD MAN AND THE SEA).  I never saw Grayson in DARK SHADOWS, but she was in the Broadway premiere of the Weill-Brecht HAPPY END, also starring Christopher Lloyd and Meryl Streep, in which she played the Lady in Gray.  How did that never get recorded?

Obscure movies:
DREAM CHILD:  one of the most fascinating movies about the Liddels, the nature of love, and two books expressing the affection (yes, DRPani, one of the greats!).

OH, WHAT A LOVELY WAR!:  one of the strange musicals, a bit of anti-war propaganda, as well as a great collection of World War I songs, some star turns, and a climax of white crosses that's terrifying in its intensity.

FINDERS KEEPERS:  Michael O'Keefe and Beverly d'Angelo, directed by Richard Lester, chasing a coffin across the western US, sort of a cross between HAIL THE CONQUERING HERO and Joe Orton's LOOT.  I found it quite bizarre and quite funny.

PICASSO SUMMER: I only saw it once, on late-nite television.  Albert Finney and Yvette Mimieux pursuing the idea of Picasso while on a vacation in Spain (or is it southern France).  Fantastic score by Legrand, screenplay by Bradbury (under a pseudonym), and a fairly successful attempt at animating Picasso's work.  Mesmerizing.

...I never saw Grayson in DARK SHADOWS...
She was marvelous in that show!  She not only played Dr. Julia Hoffman, but a wide variety of other roles, always with intelligence and, there's no other word for it, balls.  I'm glad to know you knew her; I wish she was still with us.

Ah yes DR Julia Hoffman - and since there were many trips through time on DS - many other roles.  i remember her Gypsy Fortune Teller who had to deal with a particularly pesky fly in the studio one day.  I kept expecting her to flatten in with her bangled hand.

She was a lot of fun when she played Magda the Gypsy during the show's many time travelling trips to the past.  She allowed herself to cut loose in this role and show off her sly humor.

THIS IS NOT A TEST (1962): a very low budget, independent sci-fi about a police officer and several stranded motorists try to find refuge from an impending nuclear attack.

ANAND (1970): A moving Bollywood film about a man who is dying of cancer. He attempts to use his remaining months to make those around him happy.

It is too early in the morning for me to think of 5 films...but perhaps I will be back later with 3 more.

Title: Re:CATCHING UP
Post by: Jrand74 on October 25, 2004, 07:37:20 AM
MBARNUM sent me ANAND - and it is a good movie!

Here are my additional four in chronological order:

1942 - SON OF FURY with a fine Tyrone Power performance.  He is supported by George Sanders and Gene Tierney and Frances Farmer.  Roddy McDowell plays the young Tyrone.  Good fight scenes, and justice is served in the end.

1956 - WORLD WITHOUT END a group of space men are catapulted into the far distant future where the weak people live underground and the mutants live above ground.  They realize they can never return to their own time and set about making the best of the new world.

1959 - THE MIRACLE Carroll Baker as a disgraced nun.  Featuring Roger Moore and lots of battles and miracles and bullfighting and dancing.  John Hoyt is also in this!

1962 - FOUR CLOWNS A Robert Youngson compilation that features a lot of familiar material but also a couple of shorts from Charley Chase - who is VERY funny.  I had never seen his work before - and never again....a chance to see a silent comic that was new to me.  And of course Keaton in SEVEN CHANCES!

JRand54 reminded me (by mentioning Carroll Baker) of another obscurity...BRIDGE TO THE SUN. Carroll Baker and James Shigeta star as a mixed race married couple at the outbreak of world war 2. Very good film.

Obscure movies, eh? I'll have to comb through the archives here and see if I have any. I think most of my tastes are pretty mainstream, but there may be a title or two here that isn't. I'll get back to you on this.

I've been trying to come up with a list of obscure movies, but jsut about everything I think of is probably well known to everyone on this board.  So far all I've thought of is Claudia Weill's Girlfriends.  I'll try to think of some more...

I am about to sneak out of the office for a few hours to attend the Bill Clinton John Kerry rally here in Philly.  It's just two blocks away from my office, but I'm sure it will take a while to get there because of the crowds and the way they have the streets blocked off.  I'm taking my camera.  If I snap anything interesting, I'll post it here later.
Title: Re:CATCHING UP
Post by: Noel on October 25, 2004, 08:49:35 AM
I'll admit that, whenever I see something that's not a musical, in the back of my head there's the question, Could this be a musical?

Off Beat is almost a musical already.  It's about a man who poses as a police officer.  His friend, an actual cop, doesn't want to take part in a song-and-dance number that Jacques D'Amboise is choreographing for a group of actual cops.  Sound convoluted?  Certainly!  But a great view of what Jacques does (years later, I worked for him).

Irreconcilable Differences would seem to be the tale of a little girl divorcing her parents, but it's actually a Hollywood spoof that includes a musical version of Gone With the Wind.

Thinking the other day of what sci-fi films I've enjoyed reminded me of The Last Starfighter, which, unlike so many others of this genre, is completely unpretensious.

I'm way behind reading the notes, so "Catching Up" is a good title.  I'm surprised that no one mentioned
"Hear me holler,
I choose a
Sweet lolla-
Palooza
In thee"

during that apaloosa (sp?) day.

I knew you people would come up with interesting film choices, some of which I've never heard of.

I'd add Ladybug, Ladybug, which sounds similar to the above-listed This is a Test.  About a group of schoolchildren sent home when a bomb alert goes off.  One of them has a bomb shelter.  Good cast, which features, I believe, the film debut of William Daniels, and a young Alice Playten.  Never available on video and was rarely shown on TV, maybe once or twice.  I have a dupey VHS of it.

Bachelor Flat - a not-so-perfect but sometimes delightfully daffy comedy directed by Frank Tashlin, starring Terry-Thomas, Tuesday Weld, Celeste Holm, Richard Beymer, and an amusing beagle.  Fun score by Johnny Williams.  Never available on video, and infrequently run on TV (and always flat - it's a scope film).

The Mind Benders - a taut Brit film with Dirk Bogarde and Mary Ure.  I saw it at a sneak preview and went back a couple of times during the one week run.  On DVD from Anchor Bay and worth a look.

UPS update: So far I haven't had to be merciless - I'm told that my item may indeed arrive today.  It seems that there was a "weight adjustment" on the package, so it didn't receive a proper entry scan and when that happens they automatically assign a new delivery date of the next day.  However, there was no delay on the package and it indeed was scanned in in Van Nuys early this morning and, according to the woman I spoke to, it should be on a truck for delivery today.  She did carefully tell me that they have until the end of the business day to deliver it.  I think they do that so that if it DOESN'T arrive it's too late to call and bitch.  I'm hoping it will indeed be there on time, since it's being delivered to a The UPS Store.

Thank you to all the DRs who posted warm welcoming messages yesterday - bk, Tomovoz, Danise, George, MBarnum, TCB, Panni, Dan(theMan), and especially:

Sandra - I'm not a big pop drinker, but a Cherry Coke once in a while is OK

JRand54 - Hadn't given any thought to Nancy Dickerson for a while, but she was one of the first woman national news correspondents and that made quite an impression on a pre-teen in the '60s who was looking for professional role models who were not teachers or nurses (I became a librarian - still am -and only the actress Elmore describes on an avocational basis).

Jane - Larry spoke glowingly of you, too, and I wish we could have visited in NYC.  We seem to have several things in common, including our December birthdays and Oregon (I was born there, but transplated to the midwest at a very young age)

What fun now to have interest people to talk to during my lunch hour!

I made a reference mistake in a post yesterday I want to correct. On the fourth hour of the BROADWAY - THE AMERICAN MUSICAL DVDs, the BYE BYE BIRDIE excerpt (taken from an ED SULLIVAN program) was not "Kids" but "Hymn for a Sunday Evening." I knew that, but my fingers typed out something else.

Title: Re:CATCHING UP
Post by: Dan-in-Toronto on October 25, 2004, 10:38:57 AM
As for obscure movies ... here are the first two.

1. That Cold Day In The Park. I remember being creeped out by Sandy Dennis's performance as a rich woman who, on a cold day in Vancouver's Stanley Park, invites a boy to live in her apartment. Some reviewers said the movie explored depression and loneliness. I think it's Robert Altman's weirdest film.

2. A New Leaf. This isn't really obscure, but I've often wondered why this brilliant (IMHO) Elaine May comedy didn't become a classic. I know that Elaine May disowned the movie because Paramount edited out the darker scenes. But I think Walter Matthau as the suave but broke Henry gives one of his best performances, while Elaine May as the klutzy heiress is so sweet and funny. There's genuine chemistry between the two leads. Among several priceless scenes: Elaine May - her skirt just full of crumbs - having dinner with Walter Matthau (she orders a malaga cooler); and Elaine May on her wedding night, getting totally twisted up in her nightgown. The excellent supporting cast includes George Rose as Walter Matthau's loyal butler, and Doris Roberts as Elaine May's slutty housekeeper who takes total advantage of her hopeless employer.

“I know exactly what you're talking about, Jane - I ate there many times and remember the onion soup, for which they were famous.”

Bruce today when I read your post today my brain went Maison Giraud.  Then Keith said he was thinking that last night.  Wouldn't it have been nice if he had told me that then instead of letting me spend half an hour trying to find it online?  ;D

That Cold Day in the Park also starred my old pal Michael Burns.

We never hear about A New Leaf these days or, for that matter, Enter Laughing (mentioned here the other day), which also features Elaine May.

I went to a sneak preview once and saw a horrid little film called Fade In, with Burt Reynolds and Barbara Loden.  It was shot concurrently with a film called Blue with Terence Stamp, and is about the making of a film on location.  I don't believe it was ever released.

Another not very good obscure film that I'd like to see again because it features a Michael Bennett-choreographed number, is What's So Bad About Feeling Good, with George Peppard and Mary Tyler Moore, if I remember correctly.

Noel I never thought of the Sofitel as being less attractive than most other buildings or hotels in the L.A. area.  Next time I drive by I will give it a closer look.  A couple of times we had the good fortune to stay there and the rooms were lovely.

Ginny December what? Also where in Oregon were you born and do you ever return to visit?

Jennifer with TIVO I just put in the name of a show and it tells me what channels it is on.  Having done that with CHARMED I know I can watch early episodes on TNT, just they aren’t in chronological order which doesn’t appeal to me.

Sometimes I post with out reading the notes, but only if the option is between reading or posting due to limited time.

Bruce I didn’t see your post regarding Michael until after I posted.  I guess the question still stands since old pal could be long time, or not in touch any more.

I don’t remember eating at Alberto's.  Did you ever eat at Monet’s, or was it Mona Lisa’s?  It was a darling, romantic little place on Pico designed like an outdoor café with stars in the ceiling.  The food was delicious and they served the best napoleons I have ever had.  It didn’t hurt that the waiter was gorgeous.

Back from the John Kerry rally.  Very inspirational, even though we didn't get anywhere near as close to the stage as we would have liked.  Thousands of people!  And it was occaisionally strange:  the rally took place on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, which was packed with people (including Love Park where we stood.)  To get an idea of the size of the area, picture a slightly longer Times Square.   At points during Clinton's (who looked great, BTW) and Kerry's speeches, there was sheer silence.  It was just eerie being among that many people in the center of town  and experiencing a hush like that.

Just finished this week's Radio Show. Nice job Donald. If you enjoyed the PBS special, you will enjoy Donald's show because you get all sorts of songs that were not played on the documentary. He plays excerpts from the 5-CD companion set and it makes me want to leave th office, go home and get those CDs from the various shows so I can listen to the whole score again.

I see so few movies that I can't think of many obscure films. One that does pop to mind probably isn't so obscure but I know it's not well-known enough (although many of you here may have heard of it) that it could fall into that category. The film is Big Eden starring Arye Gross. I love this movie and recommend it frequently. If you haven't seen it, it's available on DVD and VHS and you can pick it up on-line or at larger video outlets (I think).

And now, back to work.

Just five obscure movies?

Here's my five;

1)RAMROD...a forties western starring Joel McCrea, Veronica Lake, Don DeFore, Donald Crisp, & Preston Foster.  It's sort of Western Noir.  Don DeFore, with whom I worked in Dinner Theatre, gives his best performance in this movie.  Donald Crisp is great as the aging sheriff.  McCrea is top-notch.  Directed by Andre DeToth...Mr. Veronica Lake at the time, I believe. "I trusted the law; but the law was just a tired old man."

2) THE GREAT GARRICK...a delightful Warners Bros. farce from 1937, starring the always good and underrated Brian Aherne and Olivia DeHavilland.  The Comedie Francaise troupe plots revenge on Garrick the actor after he jokes the reason for his trip to Paris is to give them a lesson in the dramatic art.  Directed by James Whale.

SARABAND FOR DEAD LOVERS...swashbuckler noir, I guess you'd called it.  A British film, starring Stewart Granger and the lovely Joan Greenwood, with Flora Robson, Peter Bull, Anthony Quayle, Michael Gough.  1948.  Directed by Basil Dearden.  Exquisite, moody black-and-white photography.  Based on a true story of the doomed love affair between Konigsmark and Sohpia, married to George Hanover, who would soon become king of England.  Sometime called just SARABAND.

BELOVED ROGUE...great silent picture starring John Barrymore as the poet-rogue, Francois Villon.  What an acting lesson he gives here at the height of his acting prowess.

ZULU DAWN...My pal, the late Douggie Hickox (who directed my HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES) directed this prequel about the events of Islandhwana that happened hours before the famous battle of Roarke's Drift which were depicted in ZULU.  Cy Endfield, who directed ZULU, produced and may have written as well.  Burt Lancaster, Peter O'Toole, Nigel Davenport, Ron Lacey, Bob Hoskins, and a whole host of recognizable British names.  Not as good as Zulu, but still a rousing actioner with a great score by Elmer Bernstein.

Dan-in-Toronto.  NEW LEAF has a line that I've been appropriating for myself ever since I heard it.  I suspect it applies to many on these boards.  George Rose, as Walter Matthau's butler, says to him: "Sir, you've been keeping alive traditions that were dead before you were born."

I can't find two pieces of music I wrote for the underscoring to tonight's reading (Love Scenes).  The stage manager for Little Red Riding Hood has booked me four days this week, despite my stated desire to do as little work on it as possible.  I've got to come up with a bunch of new improv forms for And Then He Wrote before Wednesday night.  And the Second City show needs to start rehearsing the opening number I've not yet written.  Performance dates for that have just been chosen (even if a title hasn't): December 5 and December 13 at 7p & 9p.  I've only read the first act of the play on which an old friend wants to base a musical.  Out of all this I've taken hours and hours away to read every single post from this week.  Sometimes, I'll read something posted on Wednesday that leads me to post something today.  If you want to call that "pulling a Noel" fine, but I won't do it anymore.

Now, as many of you know, I have been on an Astrud Gilberto kick.  I have always loved her albums, her voice, the arrangements, the sound.  But there is a reason for this recent kick, which I've been alluding to over the last couple of weeks.  It has to do with her album Windy, one of my favorites.  It also has one of my favorite album covers of all time.  Here it is:

I just thought of another little known movie that I liked:  Robert Altman's Health.  I remember that it didn't make much dramatic sense, but there were a lot of funny scenes.  There was a lot of big talent packed in this film, including Dinah Shore.

The cover painting is by Howard Terpning, a very famous illustration artist, who just happened to do the movie poster art for some of the greatest films of the sixties, including The Sound of Music, Lawrence of Arabia, The Sand Pebbles, Doctor Zhivago, Ryan's Daughter, The Guns of Navarone, Grand Prix, The Professionals, Oliver - well, you get the idea.

So, imagine my surprise when the original painting came up for sale on eBay.  It was very expensive and it didn't get any bids.  They relisted it at a much lower starting price.  I was skeptical, so I wrote the sellers.  As it turns out, they represent Miss Gilberto, and run her eBay business and all things Astrud.  I told them that if it didn't get any bids that I was willing to make a slightly lower offer on it.  It didn't.  I made my offer and they accepted it.  I haven't purchased any art in over a year, and I decided that while the purchase was an extravagence, it would be my birthday and Christmas present to myself, and my present for having endured the months of craziness I went through whilst selling my house.  It's also a great investment (I have never lost money on art - in fact, I've made a LOT of profit selling my better pieces).  So, I am now the proud owner of the original Howard Terpning painting of Miss Gilberto used for Windy.  It arrived today and it is stunningly stunning.  Included with the painting was a certificate of authenticity signed by Miss Gilberto, a copy of the Japanese import CD of Windy and a personally-signed-to-me copy of the original LP.  She's donating some of the money to her save-the-animal charity, so it just feels good all the way around.  Now, I have to decide what place of honor I shall hang it in.

BK--Congrats on the very cool art purchase!  You got to place it somewhere prominent.  It's kind of mysterious--definately a conversation piece.  It's like having your own portrait of Jenny.

It's a shame that we don't get album art like that anymore.  The record execs would say that the details and colors wouldn't read on a CD cover.  Recording art is so bland these days.

More obscure movies:

3. La Vie De Château, starring Catherine Deneuve. I'd love to see this farce again. I don't remember too much about it, other than that it's set in wartime France and that Catherine Deneuve is quite funny. Michel Legrand wrote the music. I thought about this movie after our favorite-movie-animal TOD. It has a great performance by a pigeon.

4. Joy House. Toronto used to have two really sleezy movie theatres - the Rio (code name: the "R-Ten") and the Biltmore. But they often showed great double bills. I saw a Lola Albright twin bill at one of these theatres: Cold Wind in August ("stripper takes up with street kid"); and Joy House ("sleek and sultry thriller"). Lola Albright's Joy House co-stars are Jane Fonda and, as a gigolo on the run, Alain Delon. Lalo Schifrin wrote the music, and Pierre Balmain designed the costumes. There is something very dark and confining about this movie. And more than thirty years later, I remember feeling nearly blinded by the sunshine and relieved by the fresh air as I walked out of the dingy R-Ten (or maybe it was the Biltmore).

5. Fedora. Again, this one isn't obscure, just obscurer than I think it deserves to be. I.A.L. Diamond's screenplay adds wit to Thomas Tryon's intriguing story (the surprise twist really did fool me), and Billy Wilder's direction is at just the right level of over-the-top. It also has a great score (Miklos Rozsa). And what other cast includes such a mix - José Ferrer, William Holden, Marthe Keller, Michael York, Henry Fonda, Hildegarde Neff, Frances Sternhagen (who, by the way, will soon be starring with Matthew Broderick in Larry Shue's new play), and Arlene Francis?

Speaking of obscure Robert Altman movies, he made a really dreadful little think piece called QUINTET with Paul Newman. The movie didn't make a dime and got a very limited release. After seeing it, you can see why its release was so limited.

On the other hand, he did a satire called HEALTH that deserved much more acclaim than it got. Carol Burnett and Glenda Jackson were part of the ensemble of this neglected movie.

A movie that would probably now be considered obscure is "Nasty Habits" with Glenda Jackson.  It's a spoof of the Nixon/Watergate scandal set in a nunnery.  I only saw it when I was much younger (and couldn't tell a good movie from a bad movie even if it bit me in the ass), but I remember that I thought that it was very funny.  I bought a VHS copy on eBay a couple of years ago, but I still haven't watched it.  I probably should...and soon!

So much to report!

Dear Friend BK, that painting is beautiful.  I have the sheet music for the theme from RYAN'S DAUGHTER ("It was a Good Time, p'raps?), and I can see the similarities in the artist's technique.

DR George, I'd forgotten about the funny NASTY HABITS, based on Muriel Sparks' comic novel "The Abbess Of Crewe," as I recall.  I read the book when it first came out, but the film was much funnier, especially Sandy Dennis of THAT COLD DAY IN THE PARK as the nun based on John Dean.

So, tomorrow I report at 10:30 am, and I expect to be out of hospital by 1:00 or so.  I'll check in in the morning and most likely be E&T the rest of the day.

I also have to recommend Dreamchild with the divine Coral Brown who should have received an oscar nomination for her work. It also recreates scenes from Alice in Wonderland with creatures from the Jim Henson Workshops. CB plays Alice Liddell )the grown up woman who was the basis for the young Alice. She travels to NYC for the 100th birthday of Lewis Carroll and she is haunted by the characters she was once so amused by. As she thinks back on it, she starts to see her relationship with the shy author/professor in a new way and realizes the vast change between the young Alice and the old. The wonderful Ian Holm played lewis Carroll.

Duck You Sucker (aka Fistful of Dynamite aka Once Upon A Time In the Revolution). Another of Leone films that was butchered on its initial American release (Once Upon a Time in America, Once Upon a Time in the West and The Good, The Bad and the Ugly also fell to the same fate) Although not in the same league as these films. Duck You Sucker benifit from top notch performances by ROd Steiger and James Colburn whose characters were well definined. I saw the film in Montreal which luckily had Leone's European/Italian cut of the film. Saw it many times over the three years it played at a small cinema near my home. The film was long, (but didn't feel like it) and even had an intermission! It had all of the Leone flourishes. I refuse to see any other versions of this film. I know there is a R2 DVD release, but it is still not the complete version and missing key sequences. Hopefully the delayed R1 release will be complete and have the same care that was put into the restored version of HTWWW and TGTBATU.

The Little Girl Who Lived Down the Lane a thriller with the young Jodie Foster, Martin Sheen, Alexis Smith and Scott Jacoby. A taunt thriller about a teenage girl who may or not be living alone in a house on the edge of a small town in Nova Scotia (if memeroy serves me) The film keept me guessing and I still remember the ending. It was written by Laird Koening who never was able to match the quality of the screenplay in any of his subsquent works including a film I worked on. (The Neighbor while it was in production changed to The Man in 5A and eventually released as Killing 'em Softly. The first name change was due to the fact that the Belushi/Ackroyd film Neighbors was released. The last name changed was after the film was seized by creditors they tried to make the film something it was not.)

Evening all!

I have a mixed bag of things to tell, both good and bad.

My Mom did something to her back again and currently laid out in bed.  I begged her to let me take her to the doctor and/or hospital but she doesn’t want to go.  I’ve had this argument to many times with her over the years to fight her about it.  I have finely come to the point that I figure her pain will talk to her and tell her when she really needs to go.  I will gladly take her the moment she says she wants to go.

It hurts to see her in such pain.  I only wish there was something I could do for her.

I had set out some sticky traps and it caught a lizard.  I was at my wits end as to how to free him from the glue.  Then I hit on the idea of using the spray oil you use to grease your cooking pans with.  It worked like charm and I soon had him free, if a little slippery.  He tried to bite me—well, he did bite a time or two (like that really hurts) and showed his displeasure in a number of ways but is now safe and sound in the garden.  I threw the trap away.  Poor baby.  I hope he will be alright.  He didn’t even drop his tail so I think he will be.

I want to wish DR Elmore many, many healing vibes for his day tomorrow and the ones that follow.  Be well sooner than soon.  Please include me in the “wanting to know you got home safe” group!

I also remember Grayson Hall as Dr. Julia Hoffman.  I mean no disrespect but she screamed like a plucked chicken and I loved it.  :)

Offbeat movies.

Well you know I like Knightriders, Hanover Street and The Frisco Kid.  I think I have also mentioned Enemy Mine.  I guess for my fifth (if TV movies are also allowed) would be An American Christmas Carol.

Tom, Thank you for the lovely pictures of France.  Did you take any of Paris?  Did you even go to Paris?  What was it like if you did?

Lovely painting, Bruce.  How wonderful that you were able to get it.  At least it is in the possession of someone who will truly enjoy it.  I wonder what stories a painting on the wall would tell if it could.  Who all has owned it and where it was hung.  Was it ever sad to leave a place, glad to leave a place.  I wonder.

Finding vibes to DR Noel!

Just checked the wonderful website American Widescreen Museum. There were only 8 films made in the 3 screen process plus one in Cinamircle. The last two were released in 1962.

Yes DRDANISE - Grayson could hold her own against Barnabas/Jonathan Frid....and I loved it when she would get exasperated and look around and smack her lips.....of course she could have just been trying to remember her lines.....

Wasn't her husband one of the writers of DARK SHADOWS?  Sam Hall, right?
It was Frid that had trouble remembering his lines, chronically.  Sam Hall, her husband, was the show's head writer.

Finished the BROADWAY - THE AMERICAN MUSICAL third disc. Now that clips of those CHORUS LINE numbers from the Tonys turned up there, maybe they'll be included in their entirety on BROADWAY'S LOST TREASURES III.

The lovely Camera Three segment on "Someone in a Tree" was wonderful to see again.

Went to Walmart and found that they had a nifty rack of $1.00 DVDs...found, of all things, the 1940s version of LIL ABNER. Oddly enough it lists Peter Palmer and Leslie Parrish on the front of the DVD, but all the pics are from the 40s film. Also picked up BLOODLUST for a friend of a friend who is a HUGE Robert Reed fan.

DR MBarnum, Target must have the same distributor as Walmart.  I picked up the same DVD from their alternate trick or treats bin tonight.  The packaging is different, though--mine does not mention Peter Palmer or Leslie Parrish on the cover, though Buster Keaton's name is listed above the title.

I also picked up Orson Wells in The Stranger, Shirley Temple in The Little Princess (colorized--urk!--I didn't notice that until I got it home), and Abbot and Costello on the Colgate Comedy Hour.  All for a dollar each!

Thanks for the finding vibes, but I had to stop looking and sit down and write new themes.  Once I finished four (including a funereal fugue), it was time to go to the stupid children's show rehearsal.  The performer had better high notes than I recalled.  Then, I arrived at the reading and found there was a scene change I'd forgotten to write anything for.  There was a note I'd written in the script - "find first theme I wrote" - but this was among the missing pieces of music.  I never got around to writing a replacement.  So, using a green pen, I scribbled down a new theme as the audience was coming in.  I'd been given one line to deliver, and forgot to deliver it.  How I wish the audience knew I wasn't a singer, but just a songwriting pinch-hitting for, well, I don't know for whom yet - it's just a reading.

The words are Shakespeare's, and, given the short time the cast had to work on this script, none of the actors had quite figured out the meaning of their lines.  One had a mild Russian accent; another a thick Bronx accent.  It was all so wrong.  This play reads reasonably well, but, heard by under-rehearsed actors, the thing seemed mystifying and a little cold.  I'll be very surprised if it gets produced, and, if it doesn't, these songs and themes will die on the vine.

Does anybody have any use for a setting of Marlowe's Come Live With Me and Be My Love?   ???

Well, I can see why he'd be an ex-!

Only yesterday's posts to catch up on now.  Then I can go to bed.

I tried logging on to say "Hey Goob" at the hotel in Denver, but the computer wouldn't let me on this site because it might contain content inappropriate for children.  Frankly if more kids read this site, a better world this would be.

By obscure, do we mean, didn't do well at the box office, or that most people you talk to haven't heard of them (not necessarily the same thing)?

One I can think of is "Garbo Talks."  I always did like it.
I must go back and read alll the posts later and discover all the wonderful films people mention.  "Forever Darling" or "once More My Darling" (Ann Blythe and Robert Montgomery -- not the Lucy/Desi one) has some absolutely ridiculous moments in it and is not a great film, but it's got some funny stuff in it.  A movie not well known anymore that I adore is "Susan Slept Here" with Debbie Reynolds and Dick Powell.  AND it has "Hold My Hand" in it and Abbe Lane's sister in a small role.  And Anne Francis is brilliant as always.

I watched "Night of the Iguana" amonth or so ago; Lyn has always really liked it.  And it WAS racy.  How about the part with Ava Gardner and her beach boys?   It made me get out my maracas.  Some brillliant performances-- one of Richard Burton's better ones.   And, of course, sheer class lets Deborah Kerr get away with anything.  The film still bothers me for some reason, and I think it's meant to.   I am NEVER at ease through the entire movie and am usually quite exhausted afterward.

Today, I was supposed to be writing the proposal for a term paper. But so far today, all I've accomplished was to eat a sandwich from Quizno's. I'll do it tomorrow.

Der Brucer and I both had New York Burgers at the Rehoboth Diner, with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing on them.  Messy, but delightful.
