I guess you should know that 2015 was a pretty excellent year for this site.  December's postings were our biggest month all year.  Our full year post count is, as you know, missing about five thousand posts from those weeks we lost, but we know where we would be had we not had that problem.  It wouldn't have been a record year, but a very good one.  In terms of page views, December was our second biggest month with close to 650,000 - our biggest month, page view-wise this year was March with over 810,000.  Overall page views for the year were up over a million from last year, but not quite up to the eight million and more we've had in past years.  Still, very pleasing on every level.

Today is going to be a day for me.  I need to go to bed now so that I can get up much earlier than I usually do.  I first have to be at my parents' house by 8:30 at the latest.  Then, I have to run an errand, which is the reason that I needed to be at my parents' house so early, then I'll go to work.

I'll leave work early (I'm not yet sure how early) and go to my sister's house for the family's New Year's Eve get-together.  I think we're going to have pizza.  I need to find out if I should bring anything.

But I won't stay there all night because a friend of mine is having her birthday party this evening.  She rented The Midnight Sun for her party, but will have all her guests read through William Shakespeare's "Star Wars: Verily, A New Hope."  It's "Star Wars" translated into Shakespeare!  It'll be a lot of fun! :D

Memorable and disappointing.

I was in Time Square circa 1980/1981 before it became Disneyland.

It was fantastic being with friends and 1000s of others waiting for the ball to drop although it might have been the apple back then.

The disappointing factor was that soon afterwards the crowds began to disperse. I thought that the party would continue but it didn't

TOD:

One New Year's Eve, my friend Brian came home from California, and we went to see a production of Little Shop of Horrors and stayed for the party at the theatre afterwards....it was a lot of fun.

And also my friend Bryan and I attended a party in Chicago one New Year's Eve that was excellent and fun.  We made many new friends and had a great time.

Of course now, my idea of a good time is staying home and reading the posts on HHW!

Drivers!!!!  The almost accident in the notes was very scary to read about.

Good morning.

For over 30 years now I have always gone to the church soup dinner on New Year's Eve. After we left that on 1999/2000, though, my sister and I took my son to the downtown Phoenix celebration to see whatever band it was he liked. Sandra stayed home and shared ice cream with her cat Sasha, whom we still have.

My sister and I remembered joking when we were young that we'd both be old when the year 2000 hit.

This is interesting, because as I try to flip back through the years, there are many NYEs I simply don't remember.  In early years with the family, we didn't do anything too special.  I sort of recall being excited to stay up late and watch whatever festivities were shown on TV.  In college years, I remember nothing-- whether at home for the holidays or, later, staying in my own place there, I have no recollection of doing anything at all special on those NYEs.

For my first couple of years in L.A., still nothing comes to mind, but then the first really "nice" NYE happened in 1974 when my roommate and I were invited to spend the evening and stay over at his boss's (at the Hollywood Hamburger Hamlet) and his wife's nice apartment in Brentwood.  We'd all become good friends in the past couple of years, and they hosted the loveliest NYE dinner we'd ever been exposed to.  It was just the four of us enjoying a quiet but (to us, then) elegant evening and following day.  Interestingly, I strongly associate that memory with the then-just-released YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN that we were all very excited about.

Skipping ahead a bunch of years, I have to fondly recall two consecutive and unique NYEs spent in -- get ready for it -- Grand Central Terminal.  They were hosting huge NYE dances on the main floor, but that isn't why I was there.  This was pre-restoration, and up in the southeast quadrant of the mezzanine I was part of a gathering of BBS and early Internet users who were members of "ECHO", a text-based BBS based in the West Village.  ECHO got to set up some terminals and modems (it was still dial-up) to demonstrate for anyone interested in walking up the stairs what online communications were all about.  So, I'd take the train in and walk right up the stairs to my par-tay.  Nothing wild and crazy about it, just the excitement of being in one of the hearts of NYC with these people in elegant gowns, etc., dancing on the main floor.  I don't even know if they still do that.  The trains both ways were packed to the gills, and what was memorable about the trips back out to the 'burbs were the hundreds of partying kids.  It wasn't too unpleasant, but it was totally crazy and the conductors didn't even try to come through and collect tickets.  Whoever was on those trains could have been riding for free for all anyone knew.

Doing a California radio show called Falvors! Flavor Is Everything with Greg and Marleen on Sunday. It airs live at noon, which is 2 pm (CST) here, right?  I'll be talking Texas barbecue.

That's great, John!  Hope it goes (went?) well!

Just saw an update there was no actual robbery just an attempted robbery.

The tellers backed away from the counter and the would be robber left his bag and ran away.   They evacuated the building in case there was a bomb in the bag

Those of you who know the old LA may recall the Bit o' Scotland restaurant, a well-known fish and chips place, that was on Westwood Blvd north of Pico (maybe north of Olympic, too). The owners of John O'Groats owned that previously.

I've never been able to get behind the NYE hoopla. If you go out, you have to put up with price-gouging, crowds, parking, and other drivers. I've had some nice quiet evenings with friends, but nothing really memorable. An early dinner (in or out), and then a movie at home or the HHW par-tay is all I need.

TOD - 1982 - we'd been in New York since Christmas Day evening, having a great time seeing Broadway shows and visiting with DR Elmore.  In keeping with our tradition, we ate Chinese food at Dish of Salt (now Utsav, an Indian restaurant), saw EVITA, and stood out in the middle of 7th Avenue in the low '50s in front of our hotel at midnight.  From there we could see the ball drop in Times Square and the fireworks in Central Park.

Almost time for our partay.  I cancelled tonight's visitor.  I just am very stuck in my ways about New Year's Eve - I've been solo on these evenings for over twenty years, with only two exceptions and on both those occasions the person had to leave two hours ahead of midnight.  Three more episodes of The Bridge.

Topic of the Day:  the most memorable NYE was 1995 when I was in NYC for NYE.  I went with a theater group and some of us got tickets to a special performance of STOMP that ended right at midnight.  We got out of the theater in Greenwich Village and got a taxi and by the time we got to Times Square, it was pretty much cleared out...thankfully.  But the best part was that I was in New York City at all!

I usually stay home on NYE.  The past few years friends have had parties and I've gone most of the time.  This year there is no party as there is a big band playing downtown at a local music/art place.  Most of my friends are going to be there.  That's fine with me as I can stay home.

2015 was a year.  Lots of things happened including the bat bite, surgery etc... but all in all it was still a very good year. It was the first year I've had with no assistant for any part of the year and it went well. Ups and downs, but I went with the flow and it worked.   I'm glad I took this time off, because once I rested up, I remembered how much I really enjoy my work.  I'm really looking forward to getting back to it.  I think 2016 is going to be a great year. I have a really good feeling about it

Let's have some hot dog photographs.  I have another thirty minutes of The Bridge's final episode, so I'll go watch that.  Crime is solved and it's just wrapping some loose ends up.  I must say, as good as this was, the villain's introduction is a major cheat and doesn't play fair.  It happens in the middle of the series, but is done in a totally unfair way, which you realize once you find out who it is.

I have a Cuisinart ice cream maker. You put the inside thingy in the freezer for a day or whatever to make it freeze, then you mix up the ice cream mix from the recipe that comes with it, and then you pour it in the bowl thingy, put that on the base, plug it in and turn it on.  about 15 minutes later....ice cream

Still no heat in the living room.

The landlord should pay to keep, you up at a nice hotel and to board Nicky until it is fixed

But I have heat in the bedroom and the bathroom, plus heaters in the living room.

Well that is something... But space heaters are always a worry
