DR LAURA.....the sign for the "F" word and the sign for "Football" are very similar, so some hearing people get their teams mixed up when signing, much to the amusement of deaf people.....

She was probably using ASL - American Sign Language - instead of SE - Signed English.

ASL has its own vocabulary and syntax.  It was created by the Deaf community so that they could converse without the hearing world being able to easily eavesdrop on their conversations.

Interesting.  Seems then, to me, that it should have been kept as a private language and that all public signing should be the same.

I slept well until around 2:30AM, at which time I was wide awake and remained so most of the night. I did nod ocasionally, and my last dream was some weird hodgepodge of a group of friends waiting for a movie revival house to open and The Island of Dr Moreau with Bela Lugosi.

It's kind of a battle ground DR JANE.  A lot of hearing people have also learned ASL, and it is taught now instead of SE....but most people, deaf and hearing, use a combination of the two.

I learned SE and have only learned a bit of ASL, since I no longer work with deaf people everyday....but it is seen as archaic....

DR LAURA there are many good books for learning ASL.....using them in combination with some YouTube videos can give you a good base.  ASL uses facial expressions and STRONG hand and finger movements and has its own syntax usually putting the verb or adjective/adverb before the sentence subject:  i.e. "Go....I...." as opposed to "I go...."

Every time I hear or read about the FOX live broadcast of GREASE, I think about what DR FJL wrote a few weeks ago about the show:

Ancient Grease!

HA!

I loved the irreverent, raunchy, vulgar, original off-Broadway productio of Grease before the film tamed it, laundered it, sanitized it, and destroyed it. It was a bawdy reversal of the popular teen movies in which the bad boy reforms and a paean to the high school greasers and losers of shop class and beauty school that the upwardly mobile students looked down on. If I thought Fox were doing the original, I might be very happy, but I intensely dislike the current high school version with dumbed down, sanitized lyrics and the movie songs.

I believe Fox is doing the movie version of the show.  Pity.

The published vocal score and Samuel French script are a cleaned up version of the original show, with laundered lyrics so that high schools can perform it.  Tams-Witmark did the same with the original rental materials for Kiss Me, Kate.

When my friend Beth directed GREASE last fall, she was asked by the company if she wanted the "stage" version or the "high school" version - which is more like the movie version even MORE cleaned up.....

So I would guess there are different scores available for whichever version you want to do.

I hope MR BK has a full dress rehearsal report.....there is to be some "audience participation"......

There's only one vocal score published and that's the stage version with cleaned up lyrics. I would guess that anything else French would provide is either a typeset /digitized or manuscript score.  the published score also added piano accompaniments, wgich match nothing on the OBC recording, since the original keyboard parts were lead sheets.

I don't recall that.  Because of Sesame Street, and the fact a neighbor child couldn't speak and the family was learning sign language, Bryan was learning it when he was five.  The rest of us knew a little bit.  We moved though and it was basically forgotten.

Maybe it's the raw honey that I've been eating daily for the past six months.

Watching some more Carol Burnett. Funniest sketch so far features Don Rickles, Nanette Fabray and Harvey Korman. Not Carol.

Sunday morning greetings!  So, what did Richard and I do 35 years ago today?

Happy Anniversary to Ginny and Richard!! :D

My daughter's plans for the day include several hours in the bathtub reading her Kindle -- her favorite way to spend a day off.

I would be too afraid that it would fall in the water!

I have read books in the bath, but no way is my Nook going in there. ;D

I would never read my Kindle when bathing...mainly because I only take showers.

I've decided to go see today's matinee of "Arcadia" at Lakewood Playhouse.
Good, I have been hearing great things.
Jed and company are getting really powerful reviews.

The Lakewood Playhouse production of "Arcadia" by Tom Stoppard starring DR Jed was very good.  I didn't realize that Jed was actually one of the leads.  He was great!  I thoroughly enjoyed the show.

My friend Michael was only in the first scene, so I didn't get to see him after the show, but I did get to see and chat with Jed.  The house was about half full, and the woman next to me mentioned the empty seats, but the people who were there seemed to really enjoy it, also.  Anyway, I had a great time and highly recomend it!

Thoughts for DR TCB that he has a better day today....have a great rehearsal.

I enjoyed seeing ARCADIA last fall, but it everybody doesn't talk fast, it could be a very long show....I would think.

That was one thing that I noticed while watching it...they kept up the pace and it never dragged.

Not only are they doing the movie version, there's at least one new song by the guys who wrote Next to Normal.  Barry Pearl and Didi Conn are making cameo appearances.  If you've seen the photos you know they're copying the movie.  I'm attending a dress rehearsal.

Why would they do that?  Are they also going to have Danny sing the lead on "Greased Lightnin'" instead of Kenickie? :-\

I had a lovely cry or two or three at Allegiance today.  The songs were not memorable which was a shame but the story and the actors moved me greatly

It is seven degrees here with a wind chill of minus 14........

It's in the 40s and I feel as if it were about the same here. But I'm cold when it gets below 70.

I'm the same way John though chilly but sunny is ok if I wear enough layers.

This afternoon we saw THE BIG SHORT.  I had thought Bale was nominated for best actor and realize now it was for supporting.

I thought Steve Carrel was excellent.
Loved that movie

I think the big problem is that the dance shoes feel like I have no shoes on. So my feet get instantly cold. The socks are not enough.

Eight pages.  Don't know if I have more in me tonight, but I think I'll just relax now, write the notes, and then maybe do another few pages after that.  Maybe I'll take another shower to see if something fun comes to me.
