Well, you've read the notes, the notes returned, and now it is time for you to post until the returning cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: CALLIGRAM!
-
First post after BK!
-
George, I am so sorry you weren't cast.

George, I am so sorry you weren't cast.
Thanks, Tom. It would've been fun, but it's not the end of the world. :)

BK, is the topic where did we say our favorite musicals, or where did we see them?

Good question.

I had to look up THE LAST ANGRY MAN. I had never heard of it. And I see that it was remade for ABC's Movie of the Week in 1974 with Pat Hingle
-
I don't exactly know what this means but I have been getting a lot of bra ad's in my e-mails. I think I preferred the ads for ED that I used to get all the time.

:o Fortunately, I don't get either of those kinds of e-mails.

That is because you are still a young man. Once you join AARP, your entire world (as well as your e-mails) will change forever!

Good night, George. Better things are coming!

Good night, Tom. I need to get to sleep, too. And thanks!
-
good morning To All

If this is what you meant:
Today’s topic of discussion: When and where did you first say your favorite musicals?
I would have to say that it was probably 1964 in my parent's house. It would have been Mary Poppins the only one I saw or The Wizard of Oz
-
It is hard for me to sY what was the first musical I saw on tv as my folks liked them so any musical at the drive in or on tv would have been on our set.... But the fist Broadway musical I saw was 1776
-
Good morning, all! A lot of weird dreams, one involving an alien invasion, and others that are now very vague.
-
The laundry is in the washers. Around 11:00 my friend who is ailing will come by to pick up this choral job I have for him and we'll go to lunch at Artie's.
-
DR George, I'm sorry the audition did not work out.
-
I am pleased to announce the first of two (2) new stage plays in THE HOLLYWOOD LEGENDS collection.
If you are a fan of classic horror films of the 1930s and 1940s, then you will certainly enjoy THE LAST MONSTERS, a 5-character play centered around horror icons Lon Chaney, Jr., Bela Lugosi and John Carradine as they perform and bump heads while doing their final movie together.
The script is available on Amazon in both paperback and Kindle formats.

Favorite musical? Depends on the time and the day,
More coffee!
-
Good morning, all.
Classic dreams. Crazy, and absolutely classic. The last one this morning was so vivid it could almost be filmed.
Coffee!
-
DR Elmore, I'm happy to hear you are able to give your friend that work to do. Continued strong vibes for his health.
-
BK, is the topic where did we say our favorite musicals, or where did we see them?
Good question.

For all we know, he's commissioning a portrait as we speak.

TOD:
"The Wizard of Oz" and "Peter Pan", both on television.
Saw loads of Fox and MGM musicals from the 1930s and 40s on Sunday afternoon TV.
Saw my first "movie" musical in Asheville NC while visiting my Aunt Belle -- she took me to see "The Music Man". Loved, loved, loved it!
After that, I went to see every movie musical I could (except the Beach Blanket whatever variety). When I was in high school, I saw some incredible productions of "Stop the World...", "Brigadoon" and "The Unsinkable Molly Brown", all at the Greenville (SC) Little Theater.
My first theatrical musical experience as an actor was as a towns person, train conductor and dancer in "The Music Man" in my freshman year in college. My next was as Matt in "The Fantasticks" in the fall (part of homecoming festivities) of my junior year.
I was the older Patrick in a rather dismal production of "Mame" in Vicenza, Italy, where I was stationed in 1973. I also played Albert in a rather decent and fun production of "Bye Bye Birdie" in the summer of 1974, also in Vicenza. I directed "1776" for the Naples Little Theater in spring 1976. I produced "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown" that summer for dinner theater and free performances for the military community at a variety of locations.
Since that time, my musical experience has been restricted to viewing. I have seen a "few" plays in live theatrical surroundings, including "La Boheme" (Baz Luhrmann's), "Wicked" (twice pre-Broadway), "L'Estat", "Annie", "White Christmas", "South Pacific" and "A Chorus Line" (also pre-Broadway revival).

Possibly, but I don't believe he has an attic in which to hide that portrait!

Good morning, all.

Also
-
TOD:
Movies? It would have to be Mary Poppins when I was about 3 bi wanted a parrot umbrella that would talk to me and carry me far away. And those songs!
-
TOD2:
Stage? It's hard to remember. Maybe a tour of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers with Jane Powell and Howard Keel.
-
TOD3:
My first trip to New York I saw 42nd Street, Nine and My One and Only. Great memories.
-
Two!
Also
Two, too
Or too too, as Cole Porter would say.
-
Sorry about the casting, George.

Vibes for TCB's Sandy.

True. I had one of those portraits but it was lost during the move to Ashland.
-
I didn't think of television. Wizard of Oz and Peter Pan, absolutely. But you know what? As a kid I didn't think of those as "musicals", as such -- just wonderful TV specials and movies that were full of wonder and magic.
-
When BK mentioned Sugar, I thought I saw the same one. Now I'm not so sure. I did see it once, but when and where...?
Have to keep digging through those programs. Unfortunately, a few here and there fell between the cracks over the years, so I know I'm missing some.
-
It was the little production of Threepenny Opera that was one of those life changers, to the extent that I was entranced by the fact that this guy was playing a baby grand piano set off to the side, just below the stage, and making that incredible music happen. (I think it was my first time hearing it.) I went back to it the next week and introduced myself and he put a chair next to the piano bench so I could sit there and watch the score and everything he was doing. Yep, that little event, one of those life changers.

TOD:
A regional performance of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying". Or at least that's the first one I remember. I saw it with my ex-husband and his parents. His Mom was in hysterics. I'd never seen anyone laugh that hard over something so vaudeville.
-
On my PC, there is an add-on for FIREFOX that will allow you to download YouTube videos.....it adds a DOWNLOAD tab to the YouTube videos.
My dvd player can play MP4 files, but sometimes I convert them to AVI before I burn them with CONVERTX....I downloaded the burner DR GEORGE linked last night and will give it a try.
Format Factory is a small tool that will convert a lot of files to other formats including photos, documents, videos, and music. I have used it for years, it is free and no problems.
-
MR BK was BUSY BUSY BUSY.....that's how you make a career!
-
My friend is running late but on the way. I'm looking forward to lunch at Artie's.
-
Where is our DR Ginny this morning?
-
I have turned on the AC! WTF?

I see a plate of potato pancakes in DR Elmore's near future...
Yes, it's true, I am a seer now.

I'm up, I'm up - seven hours - couldn't fall asleep.

Mini-bitch...or mini-rant....whatever:
I saw that Josh Groban had a new album called "Stages" featuring great songs from musicals (both stage and film). I like Groban and bought it. This was a couple of months ago.
I opened it the other night and began listening. Wow! I have seldom been as disappointed as I was in this album. Mundane pop versions of each song. Very strange. And Groban's voice seldom seems to be enjoying the "pop" delivery each one requires.
Hated it beyond measure.
Adding insult to injury: "Pure Imagination" is not a pleasure to listen to. And the album attributes it as a song by Leslie Bricusse from the film "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." This was NOT from the Johnny Depp film, thanks, but from "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" (and I could not find any reference indicating that "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was an alternate title in English).
What on earth?

They attribute it ONLY to Bricusse? I think Mr. Newley's folks might have something to say about that.
-
Interesting, if you google Gorban and "Pure Imagination" it will say the song is from Willy Wonka. I looked because I expected to find complaints regarding the error, yet didn't at first glance.
-
I mentioned awhile back we have a friend with metastasized cancer. She can't really speak and I have to relay messages through a contact person. For awhile there I didn't even know where my friend was. The good news is, her daughter moved back from out of state, rented a house with her family, including my friend.

Don't recall precisely. It may also have said Newley.

Groban has performed the song many times, and Google will turn up properly credited references in stories about many of his performances of the song. The issue is the credit on the "Stages" CD liner notes.
-
I have heard some of those Groban recordings while shopping. I couldn't leave the store fast enough.
-
Jane, I think that, under the circumstances, that's very good news for your friend and her family.

Yes it is, under the circumstances.
I met this friend at the same time/day/moment I met Keith & former DR Penny.
-
I see a plate of potato pancakes in DR Elmore's near future...
Yes, it's true, I am a seer now.
Dear Cassandra Jones, I had the very same meal today at Artie's that I had there with my friend DR ChasSmith last Friday. Does this indicate something severely unsettling with my psyche?
-
My friend looks great; he's lost some weight and it looks good on him. We had a great visit with lots of laughs and intelligent conversation. He brought some work for me, and I gave him a pile of work on a choral piece and a check for partial payment.
We then went to Artie's for a delightful lunch.
-
I need to call Joshie and see how things go for him. He's on a cabaret act with a deadline for Thursday.
-
DR RLP - I couldn't believe how AWFUL that CD is. There has to be a new classification of terrible. Groban sounds like Mandy Patinkin at his worst and most self indulgent. The track from PHANTOM features a girl who is SCREAMING her part of the song.....
The whole thing is a disgrace. I think he had a PBS special doing songs from the CD, but I never watched it, and I hope it never comes on when I'm trying to watch something else.
Oh...it's Kelly Clarkson....an American Idol winner.....
Listen at your peril.

Tuesday afternoon greetings!
Where is our DR Ginny this morning?
This morning (and last evening) I was helping Fr. Richard get ready to host some clergy colleagues for a book study. We cleaned and set up the living/dining room and set up morning refreshments. I cleared out before they arrived to vote, do errands, and meet my friend Deborah for lunch and a nice long visit. Got home about half an hour ago.
-
George, I am so sorry you weren't cast.
So am I.
Boo! :(

-
George, I am so sorry you weren't cast.

Boo! :(
Thanks, Jennifer.

Had a quick and fun visit from Richard Sherman - he found an LA Christmas song he and his brother wrote in 1980 - not sure if it will work for the show at this point, but it's sweet.
-
Then I had a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich and no fries or onion rings.
-
My four cordless phones that I bought three or four years ago, haven't been holding the battery charge for longer than twenty minutes on the three handsets I mainly use, so I got new longer-lasting batteries for three of them (that's all they had in stock) and put them in the phone. Kind of crazy that three chargeable batteries cost sixty bucks.
-
All the bank stuff is better - money is back in my account, and new debit card has arrived, and it's my plan not to use it at all, unless absolutely necessary - but my plan is also, for once, to check the account online at least twice a week.
-
Checking the online account is a good idea!!!! I love online banking for just that reason.
-
There will be other parts DR GEORGE....at least that has been my experience.

I check mine every day. If something looks odd, I call the bank at once. Usually, I'm the odd one since it's mostly something I forgot about.

Yes, yes, absolutely YES! Clarkson does not acquit herself well on this song at all.

The perfect thing.

I have finally caved in and upgraded to Finale 2014.5 from Finale 2012. I can't do a thing with it beyond open files and print scores but all my copyists are now on it, so I have no choice if we are to be in sync.
-
Good evening!
-
I got back yesterday. The flight left late but still arrived on time. I then had to take the bus from JFK to LaGuardia.
-
Luckily I was able to change my flight to DC from 7 pm to 4 pm. It left at about 4:35 but I got home a lot earlier than expected.
-
TOD: Mame with Ann Milller (in 1969). I convinced my mother to go to New York. My brother was about to go into the Navy so I think that's why she agreed. My mother, brother, sister (Kate) and I went. My other brother had no interest. We did the usual tourist things. My aunt's brother-in-law lived in NYC and got us "twofers" (not sure of the spelling)--two for the price of one ticket. I think they were $6 each. Loved "Mame." There was a tap routine added for Ms. Miller.
-
I liked a few of the songs on Josh Groban's CD, but was also disappointed overall.
-
I had some interesting interactions with the flight attendants on my Air Berlin flight. First: I wondered why they hadn't passed out earphones for those who didn't have them (they had done so on the flight over), so I asked the flight attendant. She said that she would get one. Not long after I noticed her handing some little packages to the other flight attendant who was passing out drinks. It didn't appear that she referred to me (neither of them looked my way) so I thought the packages were something else. About an hour later I saw the first flight attendant again and asked about the earphones. She said "she has them" and pointed to the other FA. I guess only the second one was authorized to hand them out and I should have known to ask her.
-
Second: they passed out the Customs Declaration Form about midway through the flight. I accidentally checked the box marked "Yes" to the question "were you traveling on business." I also checked no and circled it. Later I thought it might be better to do it over so I asked a flight attendant ( I think it was the 2nd one) if she had any extras. She said she didn't think so but would check. Never saw her again! I can't believe they had no extras. Obviously they didn't have an exact number to match the number of passengers, especially since they asked passengers whether they wanted the English version or the German one.
-
I must say, though, that the flight attendants on the outgoing flight were really great.
-

I agree!

The entire Metro subway system will be closed tomorrow for "an emergency inspection of electrical cables" in connection with the incident last year when smoke filled a subway train and killed a woman. The roads will be a much greater mess than usual. Federal employees have the option of taking the day off or teleworking. Since teleworking doesn't apply to me, I'll be taking the day off. I wouldn't even consider driving to work. First, where will everyone park? I really would rather use my vacation time on a trip, but at least I have the option of taking the day off.
-
Sorry you didn't get the email you were hoping for, George. Next time!

I just happened to get one of their newsletter emails this afternoon, and a couple of the topics were interesting so I read them. In so doing, and in light of our recent discussions about Finale, and since I've harbored a certain measure of regret over not learning it, I resolved then and there to go back to square one and tackle the son of a bitch. And I believe I will this time. I mean, get to know some basic, but useful and functional skills.
Edit: Mine is 2012, and we'll just have to see how proficient I get before I throw more money at it. (I just dropped a C-note on AirTurn pedals. Imagine!) But we'll see. Oh yes, we shall see.

Luckily I was able to change my flight to DC from 7 pm to 4 pm. It left at about 4:35 but I got home a lot earlier than expected.
That's always nice to do.

Sorry you didn't get the email you were hoping for, George. Next time!
Yes, next time!

Our light system here is very "clever". When you walk in you can tap the switch and it turns on the entrance hall lights plus the kitchen lights.
When you walk into the kitchen you can tap the switch and turn on the kitchen lights.
If the kitchen lights are on, and you tap the switch by the entrance to turn on the hall lights, you turn off the kitchen lights.
As I said "clever".

I'm nervous about my appointment tomorrow. I don't want to be told I need surgery, cuz I likely won't do it, and I don't want to be told I need to stop walking for awhile. I've already reduced my walk by about half. I can't do other exercised since I can't bend my knee all the way.
On the upside, it doesn't really hurt all that much :)

Health vibes for everyone.

I really buckled down, Winsocki and did a rough assemblage of the LA show - it's taken five long hours but at least it's in some semblance of a structure - I"m still on the fence about certain things, especially the opening of act two - I have a really strong and long dance number there (a 60s pastiche), but I think it may be of better use a little later in the act as an energy boost - I can open instead with something softer - it's funny and charming, a reprise of a song we hear in act one - it might be cute and I can go into a good song from there, and just save the dance thing for a few scenes. We'll see how I feel about it - not a decision I have to make right now. I managed to find a decent place for everything, but I think I'll do what I always do and when I'm staging and watching things, I'll probably start switching things into alternate orders to see if I like them better. But, other than the act two open, maybe I'll get lucky and it will work. The structure always seems to move us forward and I don't think any of it becomes predictable. I've put the Bruce Vilanch sketch as a place holder, but I will have no idea if it's going to work there until I see what it actually is. I've also asked Doug to shorten his six page monologue - I already suggested a quarter of a page worth of cuts, which he agreed with, so now he'll do his own pass at shortening further. I have a splitting headache now because when I do this kind of thing I concentrate and focus so hard it's just headache-inducing.

Had a quick and fun visit from Richard Sherman - he found an LA Christmas song he and his brother wrote in 1980 - not sure if it will work for the show at this point, but it's sweet.
Sounds like a perfect secret track or an extra on the CD.

Five!

Headache begone vibes for BK.
Welcome home, KevinH.

Watching an oddity called Angels Over Broadway with Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Rita Hayworth, and Thomas Mitchell as a drunken Eugene O'Neill type. Ben Hecht wrote and directed the movie. It's short, not even 80 minutes long, but it's a surprisingly effective little melodrama (in the best sense). Hayworth was a nobody when it was made, and she's quite good.
It's part of a box set with a couple of other Hayworth movies including Down to Earth and Music in My Heart, with Tony Martin singing a Wright and Forrest score. A few of the other movies include The Solid Gold Cadillac, The Marrying Kind and It Should Happen to You, all with Judy Holliday.
-
The Sherman song also seems to have some publishing tie to Lawrence Welk, who recorded it - that kind of thing just gets messy. But I'll see how long the show is and then decide.
-
My sister, Linda, turns 60 tomorrow. Just got off the phone with her. Don't think she's got anything planned to celebrate. I think I'd party, but she's not really a party person.
-
Happy birthday, sis - and she shares a birthday with my Darling Daughter.
-
Thank you George.

Happy birthday to them both.

That would be cool!

If Tacoma Little Theatre's history page is correct, the first live musical I would have seen was IRENE, although I have no memory of that show. The next four years I do remember: CAROUSEL, THE DESERT SONG, THE RED MILL, and OKLAHOMA. The next five years I saw: SOUTH PACIFIC, BRIGADOON, SHOW BOAT, ANNIE GET YOUR GUN, and ANYTHING GOES. Somewhere in there I also saw ONCE UPON A MATTRESS with Imogene Coca, King Donovan, and Edward Everett Horton. The first Broadway production was the all-black cast of HELLO, DOLLY! starring Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway in 1969.

T.O.D. (Part 2)
Movies I remember seeing in theaters were DAMN YANKEES, WEST SIDE STORY, THE KING AND I, THE COURT JESTER, and THE WIZARD OF OZ.
-
I could even tell you what theater I saw each of those films, but who would know if I was telling the truth.
-
T.O.D. (Part 3)
Television I remember the most was PETER PAN and A CHILD IS BORN. I would not have remembered A CHILD IS BORN if BK hadn't released the CD. Listening to it, I started flashing back on scenes from the TV production. Another reason to say, "Thank you, Mr. Kimmel."

Well, this is pretty cool..."Memory" - Laurie Beechman - Winter Garden 6/19/97 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqfwJ157hSk).

Happy Birthday, sister Linda and Darling Daughter!!

I hoped I would get a text from Sandy this evening but I figure he was pretty worn out.

No records set today.
-
You would think today was a Tuesday.
-
Speaking of that, whatever happened to Tuesday Weld?
-
Ms. Weld is apparently alive at age 72. She was married to the late Dudley Moore back in the 1970's
-
Perhaps she and Dwayne Hickman should do an update of DOGIE GILLIS set in a Florida senior housing development!
-
I really like that idea.
-
Warren Beatty could make a cameo appearance in the pilot!
-
Maynard G. Krebs would, of course, have passed away.
-
They could bring back Zelda Gilroy.
-
Disney would probably do the pilot.
-
One more post.

Steve Franken has passed away but Sheila James is still around, sat high she went into politics.
