I haven't had much time, so I've only seen the first 20 or so minutes of it.  I like what I've seen, so far.  The singers are all very good.

Last nice warm day for a while -- 60 today, then it drops to the low 40s for the week, with occasional rain.  Ugh.  I must finish up some leaf blowing today.  It won't be the end of it, but it will clean a couple of areas pretty well and leave us in better shape for the next several days.

TOD:

We had an okay, not great, Sears-variety console stereo and a couple of portable record players in the house.  I first got exposed to decent component stuff by my first year college dorm roommate, who listened mostly on good headphones.  I got my own set of headphones and loved listening to his records and reel to reel tapes.

When I moved into my first room away from the dorms the next year, I thrilled to going to one of the hi-fi/stereo stores in town and picking out my first set of components:  Dual turntable, secondhand Lafayette tube amp, and a pair of AR speakers.

Higher end things, years later:  Vandersteen 2c speakers, bought in 1988 and I still marvel at their sound.  My upgraded AR turntable is a beauty, and I love the Pioneer reel to reel deck.  I've accumulated a few other vintage pieces that need going over by a good tech person, some of which I'll keep and some I'll sell.

Moving into video, the Panasonic plasma is still a treasure (I only wish I'd had the presence of mind to get the largest one), and the Oppo Blu-ray player and Pioneer (lower end of the Elite line) receiver deliver the goods.

My family had a stereo/tv combo - which meant you could only listen to records when someone wasn't watching television....which was not very often.

We then got a small console stereo which was nice.....probably a Sears Silvertone.

My first very own Stereo was an all in one with a drop down turntable which had some really nice sound....although nothing like a real stereo.

Something like this only NOT plastic.  The turntable was red and the speakers were black and it came with a metal stand that held some LP's underneath.

And yes, Sears Silvertone.  (The only Sears name I could think of earlier was Kenmore!)

And I still doubt it. I even mentioned in my post that he supposedly listened from the lobby.  And if he did listen, he missed the message.  The only good thing about this new administration is that we know it's already crooked going in, so we won't be unpleasantly surprised in two-three years.

It's hard to feel sorry for - or be friends with - anyone whose vote supports of the KKK and the American Nazi party and the Putin regime.  I support nominess who don't publicly hate women, gays, Latinos, Muslims, African-Americans, Asians and who don't wish to end Social Security, Medicare, Planned Parenthood, not to mention denying global warming, sacred Native American sacred grounds, and other things I consider important to my well being and that of my friends.

No one hates more than you Larry, no one

I don't hate you.  It would be like Trump making fun of the mentally and physically challenged.  He hates.  He's frighteningly hateful. I don't think I am; I've had to stand up for myself and my security since I was a child.  I've had to fight for myself most of my life, and I've learned not to suffer any fool with patience.  I had no intention of picking a fight with a person I once considered an intelligent friend if she came back to HHW, and i said nothing when you showed up to gloat after the election.  I don't hate you.  I don't like you any more, but that's not hatred.

You lost my friendship during the election when you posted on Facebook "I'm going to post pro-Trump bullshit and if anyone posts something anti-Trump I will remove it."  Then, you became E&T here for the past months - too many Klan meetings, I guess - and when you come back today, what we got was "poor li'l me, no friends here either," that was it.  If you hadn't started in on your self-pity, I would have said nothing.

Well, fuck your self-pity.  You voted for a Nazi creep, and you want respect for that?.  You voted for an anti-gay platform and you want your gay friends and gay family members to be supportive?  This has nothing to do with hatred, it has to do with your hypocrisy.

The E&T Cillaliz began the fight after I posted, just before her, that I believe the Trump administration is crooked. I have made no comments about her absence or candidate preferences except for one comment the other day when i was trying - perhaps failing - to explain my departure from HHW last week.

What I do not like - I do not hate the woman - is her now-standard practice of making little nasty ugly snips like a rabid dog before she runs away and logs out because people are being mean to pore li'l her.

Sometimes anger feels like hate.  If you recall, you didn't like something I questioned during the last election, got mad at me and dropped me as a facebook friend.  Do I feel like you hate me, no but your anger often hurts.  I have seen it directed way too hard at Cilla, so if I were her I would think you hated me.

All this anger against people with different views truly breaks my heart.  Open communication, maybe more than ever, is incredibly important right now.  Understanding why someone who is not anti-gay, anti-all the other groups you mentioned and still voted for Trump is too important.  If we can't communicate or understand their reasons, or reach out to other people than how can you expect them to unite if/when these rights begin to be lost.

Let's leave hate for elsewhere, please.  This site isn't about hate.  I understand this is a very volatile time and emotions run high on both sides of the coin.  So, Facebook is a perfect place to let off steam since that site has devolved into the craziest place ever.  Let's just not do that here - it's caused us problems before and while I know it's hard not to let off steam let's try our best to remain the wonderful safe haven that we are.

Today's session was really fun and really good and we wrapped two hours early and that included a thirty-minute lunch break.  We brought in from one of those California Chicken places - I had one chicken breast and a little side of pasta salad.  Kay is in great voice and she's such a pro and takes whatever little direction you might throw at her, and Boswell is simply as good as it gets.

And one final thought: The anger over this election is like nothing I've ever seen.  And I do know people who voted for Mr. Trump and they're not yahoos or weirdos - they had their reasons and voted their conscience, which is the right of every human.  And whatever those reasons are is absolutely fine - what's not necessarily fine is to ignore the hate, misogyny and bigotry spewed forth during the election because that is simply vile and unacceptable and it has seemingly enabled and given some very bad people leave to do very bad things.    If this turns out to be four years of racism and horrible things, if that continues,  then I'm afraid there is only one direction you can look in.   And that's all I'm saying about that.

What I do not like - I do not hate the woman - is her now-standard practice of making little nasty little snips like a rabid dog before she runs away and logs out because people are being mean to pore li'l her.

You changed this, including the questions I answered.

We were invited to a Thanksgiving celebration and I offered to make a pumpkin roll.  Then the woman said to her husband I offered to make all the desserts, for 22 people.

Did you correct her?

No.  I am making a batch or two of cookies, depending if I can also take peanut butter haystacks.  On of the children can't eat peanuts but her mother said not to worry about it.

I was still feeling rather poorly, but my cousin from Scranton was in town (which is not that often), so I took a chance anyway and got out of the house to see the Fiddler revival.  Danny Burstein was out today, Adam Grupper was the standby, and my cousin decided not to exchange the tickets because she really wanted to see this revival.  I'm a big Bartlett Sher fan, and he has never done wrong with a revival in my estimation, so of course I loved it and wept uncontrollably, except when I was laughing.

Alix Korey was a special hoot as Yente, as expected!   I put this up there with the Mary Stout Mother Burnside in MAME, which for me is high praise.

This reminds me that the Great Performances from Lincoln Center broadcast of the New York City Ballet's The Nutcracker from 2013 (I think) is finally getting a DVD release.  this live performance is far superior to the 1990s film version with Kevin Kline narrating.  Balanchine's direction of the children in the party scene is so fantastic, and those dresses for the "Waltz of the Flowers" are really some of Karinska's best work.

I wonder who's taken over her shop since her death.  She was a genius.

I have finished Menotti - what a wonderful composer.  Just wanted to hear all the Colin Davis Sibelius - this is, I think, another case, like the Dutoit Planets, where people just jump on a bandwagon.  Like Maazel, there's nothing wrong with any of these performances, although the sound is muddy to my ears, but none of it approaches a conductor like Ormandy.  I may give another listen to the Maazel set, and I may even try another set at some point.

I sat on my couch like so much fish, but I tried something interesting - I played the Dutoit Planets on the Klipsch speakers - if you crank the volume higher than I normally have it it's pretty good because at least you can hear the damn thing clearly and his performance IS very smooth.  I then put on the Steinberg and of course had to put the volume back to my usual level and it played perfectly.  On those speakers it lacks a bit of bottom that's on the Dutoit but I still like the performance better.

All right, enough with the lull already.  So let me be really controversial.  This nine-minute opera is called A Hand of Bridge.  Guess what one word is used over and over and is, in fact, the final word of the opera.

Listening (finally) to Barber's Antony and Cleopatra opera, the original version which did not go over very well at its premiere - this is the radio broadcast - not great sound (but not bad) and I have to tell you I'm enjoying this a lot more than his hit opera, Vanessa.  I have the live recording of the revised version, which was cut down and had a few things added - I'll get around to that at some point.  But the music for this is really gorgeous and there's actually a lot of it that has no singing at all.  I grabbed this off You Tube - love that - I've been doing that a lot - using one of those converter things.
