Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of session 2 and Kay, and now it is time for you to post until the Kay kows kome home.
-
And the word of the day is: PULCHRITUDE!
-
Where in tarnation IS everyone?
-
A Very Happy Birthday to DR KevinH!! :D
-
Topic of the Day:
I think Thanksgiving will be at my parents' house with the family. My sister said that my cousin from Oregon and his wife might come up. We probably won't find out until they're on their way.
-
BK, that's a great picture of you and the gang in your notes.
-
And now, to bed.
Have a good day, all!
-
Monday morning greetings!
First post from the Eastern Time Zone...
-
Good morning, all!
-
Having been up yesterday at 5:45am, I crashed very early last night. My light was out before 10:30, so I probably slept about 8 hours.
-
I will leave here in about 75 minutes for my therapy. I slept very poorly. but DR Ginny and Richard were in strange dream involving a hotel in something like a ski resort and a trip to a Broadway show. Mitch Leigh's son Andrew, whom I've not seen in aboutr 30 years, was also in it; he wanted to buy five acres of land for something, I no longer remember.
-
DR Jane, I ended up buying this, at DR Jeanne's recommendation:

I have no Thanksgiving plans. I want to see the Lonny Price film about Merrily We Roll Along, so I may do that on Thursday.
-
Good morning to all
-
I may or may not go for dinner with my friend and his family depending if his father is well enough.
-
Happy Birthday to KevinH. All the best
-
Happy Birthday DR KEVINH!
-
Continued vibes for MR BK.
-
Very happy birthday wishes to KevinH!!!
-
DR ELMORE and DR CHAS SMITH if you buy the BeActive - it is made to fit over your foot like a pair of socks and pull up to your knee. I cut the two little bands of elastic so it became a wrap around. Much easier to put on and it didn't effect the brace at all.
DR CHAS SMITH the sciatic nerve runs the entire length of the leg to the spine, so putting pressure on the nerve point around the knee is what helps.....or so it seems.

-
Very interesting, DR Jrand66. Thanks for the info on the BeActive. It just might get to audition here sometime.
-
A very Happy Birthday to DR KevinH!
-
Frankly, and not to come across as anti-social this holiday week, but I'd be just as happy joining DR Elmore at the Merrily documentary, which I absolutely have to get down there to see anyway, and call it a day.
However, this week is INSANE, and I do have some Thanksgiving obligations which include spending time with some folks we very rarely see. And of course that's all a good thing. So my day will be spent in the conventional way, and I must see about getting down there on one of the following days for the film. Might even have to be Friday. I don't know if Lincoln Center will be playing it for more than one week.
-
The lower back is better again this morning.
Clearly, it takes at least one whole day of Not Doing Anything Stupid for that to begin healing. I shall continue watching it today. I have to make one shopping trip for a few things Trader Joe's doesn't carry or was out of yesterday, but that's no biggie.
-
More coffee!
-
Happy Birthday, KEVINH!
-
T.O.D.
Wife Sandy and I will be having turkey dinner at home.
-
Good morning!
-
Thank you, Bruce, for the nice birthday greeting in your notes!
-
A Very Happy Birthday to DR KevinH!! :D
Thank you so much, DR George!
-
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday, DR KevinH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, DR elmore! I would thank you with the moving letters if I knew how to do it! And thanks for the ecard too! It was thoughtful of you!

Happiest of birthdays to DR KevinH!
-
TOD: Going to friends' house.
-
Happiest of birthdays to DR KevinH!
And sincerest thanks to you, DR Ginny!
-
Shop early in the day DR CHAS SMITH.....it's getting crazy out there!
-
I will be interested to see if BeActive helps DR ELMORE and DR CHAS SMITH.....I was NOT a Belieber until I tried it.
-
DR George I do like the idea of reusable cups priced so that people will reuse them.
-
Thursday we will have some family visitors, but NOT a big meal or anything.....it's nice to have some quiet visits and see SOME of the people....
Spring & Summer are so theatre busy for me....that I enjoy fall and winter as catch up and personal time. It's nice to be retired so that there are no work pressures. DR RLP, you will love it!
Time is a precious thing.
I read about DR GEORGE and DR TCB and MR BK and all of their theatre activities.....and that used to be me. For so many years from 1979 on - I worked full time and did theatre year round. When a show was ending, I would get nervous if didn't have something lined up to follow it....sometimes I was rehearsing one and performing in another....I love it.
But now at 66......there are times I want to just be at home.
-
I worked at two theatres regularly....and others now and then...but then in Indy if you do a lot of theatre at one place, you are tagged THAT person.....so other theatres don't really use you much....
Now I just do summer at PCPH - and that's all I need to fulfill the need......
-
Oh....and sometimes DePauw.....
-
Mom with her only granddaughter, my DN Laura:
-
TOD - as you know, we had a small family gathering here yesterday with a big traditional Thanksgiving feast. Rob and Mary Linda are leaving tomorrow evening to spend the holiday with her family in Michigan and Richard and I are staying home to cat-sit. We're looking forward to our quiet Thursday and NOT going shopping on Friday. Saturday there's an epic football game between Michigan and Ohio State, so you know where I'll be at noon - Go, Blue!
-
Good morning, all.
-
Happy birthday, KevinH!
-
Lovely photo, Ginny.
-
Miracle vibes for BK.
-
TOD: My friend Sandy has invited me to come to her olive orchard for the third year in a row. Nice to spend time with her and her family as well as a few close friends.
She will likely have most everything, so I'll be taking along a Greek salad, which I seem to crave daily.
-
Taking a dish with olives in it to an olive orchard takes chutzpah--or sheer stupidity.
-
George, it depresses me that a production of a fine, funny Moliere would only draw two people to a performance. I hope the rest of your run is better attended.
-
Hillbilly Elegy has come in at the library.
-
Let's finish this.

You decided to go with the oral dosage, makes sense. Good luck with it.

Sorta like taking the author of a book on Texas barbecue to a BBQ jernt in Middletown, Ohio...

Last year we declined two invitations and went to a movie. One of the invites we would have happily gone to except it was a dessert gathering in Portland which was later than we wanted to leave home.

Your mother looks happy.
Thanks, DR Jane. I suppose she's as happy as a physically, visually, and cognitively-impaired 98-year-old can be. Laura had me take this photo with her phone on Saturday and Richard printed it for us that evening. Laura took the photo to Mom yesterday and her first question was, "When was that taken?"
:(
-
I think eating food in a movie theatre is fine. I think smuggling in food is fine. But something like a chocolate bar. I cannot imagine bringing in your own popcorn. That would be too greasy/smelly for me to ever put in my purse. Also way too big.
I don't go to the movies very often. But my mom does and she always brings her own candy and chocolate. But small stuff so it is discreet.
DR Jane wouldn't your bag/purse smell from the popcorn?
-
It did snow. I had to go find my winter boots. :(
-
Happy Birthday DR KevinH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
...DR Ginny and Richard were in strange dream involving a hotel in something like a ski resort and a trip to a Broadway show...
Back in the days when it seemed we were hosting ALL the big family gatherings, I had a fantasy that Richard, Rob, and I would spend Christmas just the 3 of us at a ski lodge. Not for the skiing, mind you, but for the absence of food prep, house prep, and family drama.
-
And I am home from therapy. It went much smoother today, I think, because the muscles that need stretching were already over last week's trauma. I ad a few more exercises added to my routine, and all are easy to do here at home.
-
DR ChasSmith, if you decide you want to come in for the movie, please do. That's my only plan for the day. I may need to stop at the market5 on Wednesday after therapy and pick up some potatoes to mash. so my dinner is goin to be stew, potatoes, sweet potatoes, cauliflower and broccoli. And apple cider!
I don't beed anything sweet after the sweet potatoes.

Not at all. It is sealed in a plastic bag. Because it is in a baggie vs a popcorn container I don't notice the smell when he is eating it. I do notice the extra crunch sound as it is a tastier, crunchier popcorn kernel we buy to pop the corn.
I try not to eat candy at the theater. Chips or popcorn are my treat along with a children's size coke.

Lovely photo, Ginny.
Thanks, DR John G!

Hauled out my Sibelius today. John Barbirolli conducts. Listened to Symphony No. 6 and some historic scenes. Now it's Symphonies Nos. 5 and 7.

Doing genealogy research Keith found a couple of cousins that he communicates with and that I am on facebook with. They live in Austin and we will be meeting them, along with their husbands, in person. One of them is a vegan and will find a restaurant for us.

DR George I do like the idea of reusable cups priced so that people will reuse them.
The last time I worked concessions, several of the cups were left in the theater (we're supposed to make note of where they were found and try to contact the people at those seats...if they paid with a credit card and are in the system), and a few patrons specifically gave their cups to ushers saying that they didn't want to keep them...and that the ushers could! One of the ushers who got one of the cups didn't want it, so I said that I'd take it, and I did! :D

George, it depresses me that a production of a fine, funny Moliere would only draw two people to a performance. I hope the rest of your run is better attended.
Thanks John, but actually, the Molière (The Physician in Spite of Himself) hasn't opened, yet. That's still in rehearsal. The latest in our series of readings, "WORDS, WORDS, WORDS: Hans Christian Andersen" is what drew only two people on the second of two nights. Since that cost literally nothing, the total of eight audience members between the two nights is not a total loss. And we actually had fun with the two people, so it was not a sad night, at all. :)
-
Thanks, DR George!

Happy Birthday, DR KevinH

Glad to be back around after a crazy weekend of Oklahoma callbacks, a family wedding, a viewing of a kids production of Seussical-The Musical which was amazing for a kids production.
-
I also saw The King and I tour in SF on Friday and it was phenomenal. Just as good as the Lincoln Center staging. Trying to see if I can get back one more time. The orchestra wasn't as big and it did include a lovely keyboard, but it all sounded authentic and real - you wouldn't even know there was a keyboard.
-

Thanks. I have this one saved from the list you gave me. I added the address to the name and noted it is a 15 minute walk from the Westin.

I would not have thought to give a cup to the usher. I probably would have left it to the side of the trash can or on a table.
-
When I order hot chocolate at a coffee shop, unless I have to take it with me, I order it in a regular cup. I prefer not to drink out of those lids.

This is the national tour, right? And that would be DR Elmore's adopted son Josh's orchestration, which I very much look forward to hearing when it plays the eastern seaboard.
-
It plays Philadelphia (March 22 thru April 2) and Hartford (May 30 through June 4).
And it's already shaping up to be a busy winter/spring for a bunch of us. But I've got to get to it.
-

If you don't have/buy the plastic cup with the lid, then you can't take your drink into the theater. That's their purpose...to help prevent spills. Also, these cups are not for hot drinks. Sodas, wine, and beer only.
-
MR BK - are there any current productions of The BRAIN going on? I would think there would be lots of high school productions in the fall and spring.....

Had an omelet and a bagel for my meal o' the day, picked up no packages, did some banking, and had a package waiting for me at home, a screener of a movie I actually want to see - The Girl on the Train. It was a bomb and got bad reviews - in the Gone Girl mold but they simply hired to worst possible director for it - the guy who made The Help - whatever his talents may be, why on earth would you give that guy (who's only made two films I think) a glossy thriller? From everything I've read, he was the problem with the film.

Revised my Richard Sherman questions for our upcoming event and Q&A. Removed some things and added a couple.

Not easily, and they're not supposed to in the theater.

BK mentioned eating at Lenny's, which used to be Junior's, and I had to refresh my memory on where Junior's was. Did that, and was stunned at how familiar it looked. I don't think I ever ate there, but from going by it literally hundreds of times, it was just the most iconic image for me.
Which brings me to this: Was there a deli, at least in the 1970s, on the south side of Pico in the general vicinity of the Picwood? My first thought was Zucky's (I was thinking of their signage), but that was in Santa Monica. I'm also thinking this deli wasn't in its own standalone building, but who knows how mixed up this memory is...

The next chapter of the story of my car's tires:
Three mechanics have now told me that the tires were vandalized, that this was not the result of driving over glass or a nail. I was trying to think where and when this could have happened. A week ago Friday I had parked my car on a city street in Santa Monica--my stomping ground--and it looked like someone in a black pickup truck had also eyed the space. He'd double-parked his truck as I left my car. The following Sunday I had the first flat tire, and on Monday, the second, both slow leaks. We don't know for certain, but this may have happened on Friday--revenge over a parking space.
My car now has two new tires and there have been no more flats. The uneasy feeling, however, is still with me.

Junior's was about a 2 minute walk from there. While it was on Westwood Blvd it was almost to the corner of Pico.

Is this the same Junior's that's also in NYC?

Shop early in the day DR CHAS SMITH.....it's getting crazy out there!
I had to stop at Trader Joe's today. I chose a time of day that I thought wouldn't be too bad and it was still mobbed. It'll be even worse tomorrow and Wednesday. And I bought their last apple pie.
-
I am not familiar with Junior's in NYC.
-
Mom with her only granddaughter, my DN Laura:
That is a lovely photo, DR Ginny.
-
Is the NY Junior's the one known for its cheesecake?
-
And I am home from therapy. It went much smoother today, I think, because the muscles that need stretching were already over last week's trauma. I ad a few more exercises added to my routine, and all are easy to do here at home.
I'm glad it was easier today.

Today at lunch, I went to Fred Meyer (well, Taco Del Mar, which is right next to Fred Meyer), and Fred Meyer was packed! I wouldn't have thought that it would be so crowded at 1:15 pm! Granted, it's three days before Thanksgiving, but who knew?
-
And now, I just remembered that I need to go to Costco. Hopefully, they'll have cheesecake available to buy tomorrow. :-\
-
Harry Rosen opened the first deli in 1950 in Brooklyn.
-
The Saul brothers opened the L.A. Juniors in 1959.
"it was a small operation run by the Saul Brothers that mainly sold corned beef and other deli food to go. But they had a handful of tables and if you wanted to have a sandwich there, one of the brothers would make it and bring it to your table. It was on Pico, a few blocks east of Westwood.
In 1967, they moved to a new building that was more of a restaurant on Westwood."

I don't think so. In this case, papa died and the two sons couldn't keep it going. There were rumors of lots of infighting. They went from very busy to out of business. Then Lenny's took it over and it's busy again.
-
Glad to hear that the recording sessions went well. I'm anxious to hear the CD.
Of course, I'd have to first take off UNSUNG SHERMAN BROTHERS.
-
Feel-better-pronto vibes to DR Ron.

TTFN.
-
That's scary DR JEANNE.
-
Well, I'm off to 1) Costco (just to check to see if they even have cheesecakes); 2) usher training; 3) rehearsal; 4) home.
Until later!
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to KEVIN H!!
Nice that you had the day off from work.
Thanks, DR Jeanne!
-
Is the NY Junior's the one known for its cheesecake?
Yes, DR Jane. They have a delicious carrot cake/cheesecake among many others!
-
It sounds good.

To clear up a few things about Lenny's - Junior's closed some years ago and Lenny's moved in - same building, same booths, same decor and same everything. Lenny's IS Junior's with a different name and yes it's on the corner of Pico and Westwood (just north of Pico on the west side of the street). I believe the other deli on Pico that dear reader Charles may be remembering is Factor's about six minutes east of there. Factor's is still there.

DR John, Keith has decided we will take a little, very little Texas road trip. From Austin we will drive to Waco for the night and see the Dr. Pepper and Ranger museums. Before arriving in San Antonio we shall spend a night someplace else.
I am thinking it would be nice to stop and see the Westcave Preserve and then stay in Fredericksburg.
After San Antonio he still wants to stop for the night before heading to the Austin–Bergstrom. I have come up with some possibilities....
La Grange
Gruene, New Braunfels
Shiner
San Marcos
Please, what do you think of these options? Can you suggest something better?
-
I am very excited I am finally going to see a portion of Texas, and more than we had originally planned.
-
Finished The Girl on the Train, a Gone Girl wannabe and I didn't think that much of Gone Girl. This seems to be THE new genre in fiction and as long as the book is written by a woman featuring a woman protagonist the rights are snapped up before publication. Now, Gone Girl at least had a director who knows who to, well, direct. The Girl on the Train makes the huge mistake of hiring a director who can't direct - this former actor's biggest film was the dreadful The Help. That's the guy you want to direct a thriller, which is, I think think, what The Girl on the Train aspires to be. Haven't read the book, of course, but have read enough about it to know that much of the dreadful and I do mean dreadful dialogue comes straight from the book. But more in the notes - suffice it to say the film is dreadful, with no style, a terrible score by Danny Elfman that renders the film inert at every step, and some okay performances that can't really be more than okay because of the characters themselves and how poorly they're written (in the film at least). It deservedly laid a huge egg at the box-office. Oh, and of course everyone talks about how twisty it is. Really? There isn't a twist in the entire film other than the reveal of the villain and if you don't know who that is after ten minutes you can retire from the thriller club.

Factor's is too far away from the Picwood Theater.
-
And now, to cleanse the palate, a few Shostakovich symphonies. Listening to number one right now - conducted by Ormandy. He did several and I have those four or five uploaded and the other day I listened to the Stokowski version of the 11th, which is wonderful. In the closet I have a complete set, still sealed, that I got about six years ago. I don't know if those performances are well thought of but I may as well pop it open and see what I think.
-
Factor's is about two miles east of the Picwood. But I can't think of any other delis that would have been around there besides Factor's.
-
Bruce, the book was a BIG hit, as was GONE GIRL which I also did not care for. I thought Gone Girl was better written and a better novel the the girl that was on the train.
Funny, my brother who will rarely read a female mystery writer thought Gone Girl was very good.
-

Junior's/Lenny's is so close to the corner I bet he remembers it being on the corner.

I went to the address on Google maps for 2379 Westwood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90064 and then looked at the street view. Looking down Westwood to Pico you can see the bridge and where the Picwood used to be :(
I tried to copy the photo but can't.
-
I quite clearly requested mild weather in the 60s throughout November and Decemberinstead we gave had window rattling winds and snow... snow!!! Not a lot but snow nonetheless. I am filing a paypal dispute
-
Thanks, BK and DRs Jane and Jeanne. That deli idea I had is just completely wrong for that location. I think it's one of those memory/image things that's based on something real but the rest of the image got created out of whole cloth, and it can never be resolved.
I know (now) exactly where Junior's/Lenny's is, and I did indeed know Factor's from the year I lived on S. Beverly Dr., just south of Cashio. I'm happy to hear it's still there.
-
Ron, how are you feeling?
A bit under the weather lately.
Vibes you're over the weather soon.
-
Seven!

Loved your weather report, vixmom! :)

Gruene/New Braunfels is just up the road from San Antonio and on the road from here to Austin. It's a charming place with a couple of great places, the Gristmill Restaurant, which overlooks the river and is housed in an old mill. Next door is Gruene Hall, a great place to hear music and dance (it was featured in the John Travolta movie, "Michael").
-
Feel better vibes for Ron.
-
Shiner is about two hours east of San Antonio. I haven't been there. I hear it's nice. It's sort of near Luling, which is a great spot for barbecue.
I love the town square of La Grange, and there is a great meat market, Prause's, there. I found the people really charming there. Very Texas small town.
Don't really know San Marcos, other than it's a university town.

Is there anybody here who doesn't watch DANCING WITH THE STARS, but who would be willing to vote for me?
Tonight was the first part of the finale. And they decided not to let people from Canada vote this year (which I loved doing).
The show hasn't aired on the West Coast yet. So if you do watch the show and live on the West Coast then stop reading now. Although I am pretty sure that they leave up all four choices (even the person who got eliminated).

My favorite couple (they absolutely blew me away tonight) is James and Sharna. Such an incredible freestyle routine.

On the way between Austin and San Antonio is Kyle, home of the Texas Pie Company. There's a big cherry pie slice over the door.
-
Wimberley is another charming town in between the two cities that might be worth a visit. Also a pie company there, but a really beautiful park.
-
I am curious to see the Girl on the Train movie. I liked the book, but didn't love it. I wish the mystery had been more developed.
-
Watching "Once Is Not Enough." What a mess! Kirk Douglas, Alexis Smith, George Hamilton and a whole lot of nonsense. Only Brenda Vacarro seems to be having any fun. And the Henry Mancini score is dreadful. Julius Epstein is far from his Casablanca best.

I have a cookbook from Junior's in Brooklyn. I really enjoyed my visit there. Great egg cream, as I recall.
-
I have suffered a big allergy attack all day today. The cedar is blooming. I hope it doesn't destroy me this season. I have been a leaky faucet all day.

Done
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this.

I don't know that I can take the last half hour of this mess tonight.

Good night, all.

Happy Birthday Kevin

Went to Gelson's and got some shrimp and a no-calorie salad into which I put half the shrimp. Eating it now accompanied by the Shostakovich fifth.

I have memories like that. I was surprised to find Junior's had an earlier location.
-
DR John thanks for the suggestions. I will share them with Keith tomorrow. He is basically planning this trip and I am sending places of interest to me.

Where in tarnation IS everyone?

I thought we'd be to page fifty by now.

Finished with Shostakovich, and am listening to a delightful piece by Frank Martin, conducted by Stokowski. Don't know anything about Martin, but this piece is fun and has harpsichord. It's like film music.

Good evening!

It doesn't matter how good any of us actors are in WONDERFUL LIFE, the only one the audiences are going to remember is Zuzu
-
She just says her lines and all of us melt.

If we had added a puppy, the rest of us could have stayed home.
