Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of Father's Day, and now it is time for you to post until the fatherly cows come home.

Listening to the mono versions of Ravel now - just as scintillating as the stereo versions, just more nostalgic in sound - captivating performances, though - the stereo versions are equally captivating but these are great to hear.

I remember watching it, but I don't remember if I recorded it.  If I did, it's buried somewhere.  Sorry, Tom. :-\

Listening to two of the later Haydn symphonies - I know nothing of Haydn.  And I don't think hearing these two is making me want to know more.

Yesterday, I first helped my sister at the booth of the Olympia chapter of PFLAG at Olympia's Pride Parade.  The whole event was really nice.  We walked the parade, which lasted a little less than a half hour.  We set up the tent, sat around for a while, then walked the parade, then sat around some more.  While sitting around, the PFLAG folks were passing out stickers and buttons and bumper stickers and bracelets and bead necklaces!  There was a steady stream of people throughout the day.

That Haydn wasn't foolin' around - this guy wrote 104 symphonies.  I'm currently listening to the 104 after having listened to the "Surprise" symphony.

I found out that TAO's 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche totally sold out last night!  A reviewer came on Friday's opening night and he loved it!  He and another person recorded a podcast that they do together.  I was told that they're giving the show a rave revue!

I guess my parody stalker(s) is (are) really and actually back, this time (very sepcifically and narrowly) in the NY Times Metropolitan Diary comments.  There are three posting names who are objecting to the presence of verse in the Times comments on the Metropolitan Diary specifically. And it seems they must be flagging my posts there or something like that.

I suspect the three posting names are acting as a group, since all three of them post with the same typing style, a style which is extremely unusual in the Times comment box (though I guess it's  a style that's fairly normal on Facebook)  - the e.e.cummings no-capital-letters style, as if they're typing quickly and can't be bothered to hit the shift key.

And all three posting names are using the same strange choice of descriptive word, saying I'm "co-opting" the discussion by putting lyrics there [though many more people seem to approve of the lyrics].    None of this would connect to the 2012-and-on cyber stalker, except that that same word ("co-opting") was used by that video guy J Frank when he was complaining bitterly on Stalkin Broadway than I was co-opting threads on Talkin Broadway.

I'm explaining all this here only partly to vent, but partly because I suspect the stalkers are guests here from time to time, so I'd just like it to stop like it did last time on DataLounge.

Title: Re: THE MOTHER OF ALL FATHER'S DAYS
Post by: FJL on June 18, 2017, 04:21:24 AM
None of this has any impact on the lyrics showing up elsewhere in the Times comment boxes, as they have for a long time and where my fellow readers (and also an occasional Times reporter) make a point of welcoming the ones they like.

So maybe the thing to do is not to submit comments in verse to the Metropolitan Diary until it gets resolved.

I am ushering in a bit for a world premiere production of a show called Through the Wall. It's about the lives of Mexican migrants who have crossed the border into the U.S. It's all based on interviews from children as well as adults, kind of like what Anna Devere Smith does. I have a feeling it's going to be a very emotional afternoon.

This was my advice to summer interns.

Tune of (of course)  “Summer Nights”

Summer intern, in N-Y-C
Summer intern, listen to me
You won’t make money to burn
But you’ll find so much to learn

Summer day, earn what they pay
But enjoy your summer nights

(Well, oh, well, oh well, uh huh
Tell me more, tell me more
Heard there’s so much to see
Tell me more, tell me more
I hear Shakespeare is free)

Uh huh. Uh huh!
If your bosses buy a nice lunch
Be real grateful, thank them a bunch
If you’re offered any nice perk
Let it show in your hard work

Summer youth, don’t be uncouth
And don’t stay out late, those summer nights
Whoa, whoa, whoa

(Tell me more, tell me more!
Can I surf on the net?
Tell me more, tell me more!
Will that get them upset?)

Uh huh, Uh huh!
Summer clerk, you’re there to work
Still enjoy – those su-u-mmer nights!
(Tell me more, tell me more!)

I often read the posts on the NYT. Some I strongly disagree with, and in a few cases I think the posters are real idiots. But why would anyone object to verse? If I saw something there that didn't appeal to me I'd just skip over it. Gawd! Aside from pure malice it's difficult for me to understand an objection.

Father's Day afternoon greetings!  I accompanied Fr. Richard to church in Dayton today and then took him to lunch at Panera.  We came home, changed clothes, relaxed a bit, then went to Staples where we both had copying to do.  I also bought a label maker.  Do we know how to live it up or what?

Well, we had 8 ushers for about 45 guests at the show, which was incredibly moving. A Mexican artist had designed the stage, which featured a wall of latex skulls that she had painted and then illuminated with lights under each. Overhead were five hot air balloons made out of paper. On them were projected animated images of people walking to suggest their migration. Around the walls were Mexican-style batik banners. You could walk around before the show and examine the works up close.

But the best visual of all was this stunning coup de theatre at the end, after the actors had finished telling their stories of the anxiety they face living in a world without papers, the back wall (actually a garage door-type barrier) was raised, bringing the world outside right into the theater. Really effective.

I ran into my super earlier this afternoon when I went downstairs to retrieve a package from the postman  Je says the elevator crew is arriving tomorrow to repair the broken door.  I don't know if this means the damned thing will be working again or if it means that we will have a broken life with a new door.

I hope it means we will have a working one.

Continuing my education with Schumann's Unfinished Symphony - not my kind of thing, but I was happy to hear it - also some Rossini (okay) and a Beethoven overture (okay).  Now we're back to one of my favorites, Ravel, and the earlier Cluytens mono recordings, which are amazing - the stereo versions are also amazing, but these are just beautiful.

Watching Mississippi, a sort of Show Boat ripoff that Rodgers and Hart wrote. It's got W.C. Fields, Bing Crosby and Joan Bennett. The music is good, the script is lame, and W.C. Fields steals every scene he's in.

I'm a quarter of the way into 4321. It's not the book I expected at all. It's four involving stories that stem from the same starting point. All of the boys are named Archie Ferguson, but the four Archies grow up in vastly different ways. And once or twice, the stories have shared some common ground with the Kritzer novels.

Started watching watching the Ava Gardner version of Show Boat, the version I like to call Show Bloat, because it's so over stuffed. Still, I like a lot of it, and Gardner is the best thing in the movie.

If you know the score, some of the musical queues are odd, such as "Mis'ry's Comin' Around" for when Julie and Steve kiss. It's more appropriate when they use it for when Julie leaves the boat.

The movie I tried to watch was The Condemned of Altona - subtitled and in Eyetalian, which is not what I wanted - it's mostly American stars - but it's never been on home video so one takes what one can get.  What's interesting about the film is the score - Shostakovich's eleventh symphony is used as the score and it's very effective.

This was my advice to summer interns.

Tune of (of course)  “Summer Nights”

Summer intern, in N-Y-C
Summer intern, listen to me
You won’t make money to burn
But you’ll find so much to learn

Summer day, earn what they pay
But enjoy your summer nights

(Well, oh, well, oh well, uh huh
Tell me more, tell me more
Heard there’s so much to see
Tell me more, tell me more
I hear Shakespeare is free)

Uh huh. Uh huh!
If your bosses buy a nice lunch
Be real grateful, thank them a bunch
If you’re offered any nice perk
Let it show in your hard work

Summer youth, don’t be uncouth
And don’t stay out late, those summer nights
Whoa, whoa, whoa

(Tell me more, tell me more!
Can I surf on the net?
Tell me more, tell me more!
Will that get them upset?)

Uh huh, Uh huh!
Summer clerk, you’re there to work
Still enjoy – those su-u-mmer nights!
(Tell me more, tell me more!)

What in the world would anyone think is wrong with this?  It's great, Fred!

Well, we had 8 ushers for about 45 guests at the show, which was incredibly moving. Just finishing up the last of the mono Ravel.  If you have never heard anything but Bolero you really owe it to yourself to discover this music.  The Pavane for a Dead Princess is simply one of the most exquisitely and heartbreakingly pieces of music ever written.  The Valses Nobles and Sentimentales is brilliant, and you'll hear how it influenced Mr. Sondheim immediately.   The Mother Goose suite (Ma Mere l'Oye) is gorgeous.  These orchestrations, these tunes.
