Well, you've read the notes, the notes reviewed the Saturday Review on a Sunday, and now it is time for you to post until the Sunday Review cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: VERISIMILAR!
-
First post after BK!
-
Second post after BK!
-
Good night, George.
-
Good night, Tom.
-
Have a good day, all!
[Typo corrected. ;) ]
-
First on the East coast!!!
-
Possible TOD if anyone wants to chime in:
BK said: "May these people suffer the rest of their lives for what they did - they won't, of course. The wealthy rarely do. They caused harm, which is what they intended to do. Bravo."
So a possible question is: Do you have any people like this in your life, either wealthy or not, who just wanted to cause harm out of spite?
-
Good morning, all!
-
After dreaming that Eddie Murphy killed me two nights ago, I thought I'd reached the outa-the-ballpark zone, but I swear last night I dreamed I was a squirrel and my best friend was a bat.
Seriously.
-
I also had an annoying dream about the organization of my collection at the Miami Library. Oy!
-
Today I must do a bit of shopping for my trip.
-
DR JohnG, how was the drive back?
-
Very windy this morning in Austin.
Rain has taken a temporary pause.
Garbage cans have to be put out tonight for pick-up tomorrow.
If this wind persists, I wonder if garbage will be all over the street in the morning.
-
good morning to all
-
Some of you might find this article on my NYPL friend Bob interesting:
http://www.webjunction.org/news/webjunction/librarians-wikipedia-bob.html
-
Interesting DR ELMORE. I wish I had confidence that all Wikipedia contributors were as knowledgeable as your friend.
-
Sunday.
I think I have only seen ONE issue of the Saturday Review.....probably at the library.....
-
BK that is very sad that you had to sell those paintings. :(

Will you put yours out? I recall my neighbor a couple of blocks down calling to say my missing lid had blown all the way down to her house.
-
Good morning, all.

The bird got me up in time for church.
-
Travel vibes for Elmore.

The drive back was not unpleasant until I got north of Waco. There had been an accident in Tennessee that caused a backup and it was rather brutal as it involved a trailer with a manufactured home on it. The home was destroyed and all over the interstate.
-
But it was clear and not too sunny until I hit West, Texas. I have to stop there for poppyseed kolaches either coming or going. And the gas was an Okay $2.15 a gallon, so I filled up. At that point, there was about 250 miles to go.
That's when the rain started and the sun set.
-
Waco was at a standstill, so, thanks to directions from my Waze app, I left I-35, drove through the city and eventually bypassed the whole mess, whatever it was.
-
Are you having any hurricane/storm backlash?
-
Then, south of Waco, the Interstate is under construction and has been for years. It didn't stop most drivers from driving recklessly through the area.
Once I got to Georgetown, I got on the toll road to bypass the traffic nightmare that is Austin. It was a good move, as Austin was facing far heavier rains than San Antonio. It was something seeing sheets of rain sweep over the road, sometimes the waves were higher than the car, but the water on the road was never too deep to pass.
-
South of Austin, I got back on I-35.. I was able to drive 80 for the last 50 or so miles.
But I was exhausted. The delays added another 90 minutes after to an already too long trip. Then I had to assemble the bird's cage and it kept collapsing. I really didn't need that v

JB feels at home. And I'm glad to be here.

Two!
-
Are you having any hurricane/storm backlash?
Winds, some rain. It just seems stuck in that mode.
-
I've heard from Houston friends and Austin friends that they're okay.
I have not seen any photos from Port Arkansas, which I feel was destroyed. A shame. I used to love to visit there. They had better restaurants per capita than any other place in the state.
Also, Rockport has been slammed. It's where I went to see whopping cranes and other rare storks and birds that live by the water. Maybe they haven't migrated yet.
-
Time for a nap.
-
Good
morning afternoon, all.
-
Back from a run-through of the little cabaret-ish benefit program that happens this afternoon.
The event is in this old former bank building, which is magnificent, but you couldn't have picked a worse place acoustically, what with the huge open rooms and high ceilings. Some of what comes out of the various singers'/actors' pie holes is echoed all over the damned place.
However, the attendees should be sufficiently plied with adult beverages for it not to matter much.
-
LOVE the Saturday Review notes.
I have a couple of 1950s or 1960s issues somewhere around here, and have fond memories of it being a regular thing. I remember reading it occasionally during the late 1960s, and I subscribed for a while during the 1970s. BK's general description is perfect.

Post Deleted!

I binged on the orchestral music of Richard Strauss at one point in the mid-1980s and again in the early 1990s, and finally had to walk away from it for a while. What got me going on it then were the two Reiner recordings of Also Sprach Zarathustra. I was blown away by it, and must have acquired every so-called audiophile original and reissue there was back then.
I'd come to him earlier from the operatic angle. We studied Ariadne auf Naxos in school, and to this day, the RCA Rysanek/Peters/Peerce recording with Leinsdorf is magic for me. I spent some time with Der Rosenkavalier and finally came to love it, but it seemed so massive that it took me a while. Later on, my deeper attraction to Elektra and Salome kind of took over. I never got to know any of the others.
I think DR Elmore has said these pieces are too long and overstuffed for his taste, and I totally understand that. Even in those last two "shorter" operas which I find electrifying, there are stretches that seem like there's no end in sight. I think the man has to have written more notes than anybody.
-
At the benefit for the theater this afternoon, there'll be a signed poster donated for a raffle by BK's close personal friend Stephen Sondheim. (I think it's a LuPone Sweeney Todd.)
-
Got to go! I've got the article on DR Elmore's librarian friend opened up to read later.
-
Sunday afternoon greetings! Fr. Richard conducted the service at Christ The King in Dayton today, so, of course, I went with him. Now we're both ready for naps...
-
DR Elmore, great to read about Bob! As a reference librarian, I often used Wikipedia as a place to start, but never as a research stopping point. Always used it to help me get to more authoritative sources...
-
I discovered SATURDAY REVIEW in high school, probably doing Reader's Guide research for some term paper, and read it faithfully until its demise.
-
The bird got me up in time for church.
I came to see how you and JB were doing. I'm glad all is well.

Oh my, what a mess.

Great. I just learned something. I thought it was Wayze. I should try it and compare it to Keith's Google which is better than my iPhone.
-
I hope the whopping cranes and other rare storks will be ok.
-
Elmore - thanks for posting that article - very interesting.
-
I'm up, I'm up - nine hours of sleep I should think.
-
Parts of Houston look like a river.
-
Good evening!
-
Page 2?
-
Wow, up to 50 inches of rain (total) expected in parts of Texas!

You might have to be on facebook to see this video of boats going around cars.

Just a couple of more weeks before I get to see my sweet girl again
-
Made pesto tonight with the half bushel of basil that was growing out back.
-
I can send you some, BK, if you'd like.
-
Also, picked a pepper and have a cucumber that's about ready.
-
The grass is a mile high.
-
But I'm seeing blue in the sky outside, so that's a plus.
-
And now I'm watching a Jane Powell flick called The Girl Most Likely with a Hugh Martin/Ralph Blane score. Gower Champion did the dances and Stanley Donen produced.
-
Just a couple of more weeks before I get to see my sweet girl again
Lucky you.

That sounds good. Send it to me instead of Bruce ;)

But I have a feeling it's not exactly top drawer.
-
Hi, Jane.
-

A big plus right now.

Hi John. I don't know how you do that long drive in one day, especially in bad weather. You must have been relieved to arrive home.
-
Not liking the looks of Irma forming off the coast of the Carolinas.
-
Tobe Hooper has died. "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" was a very different and very effective picture.
-

:o

The photos from Houston and the coast are just heartbreaking.
-
They are. At least people are able to take their pets with them when they are rescued.
-
Hi John. I don't know how you do that long drive in one day, especially in bad weather. You must have been relieved to arrive home.
I doubt I'd be able to do this with anyone else in the car. I just stop for gas and a bathroom break, then back in the car. Just get it over.
-
Wow, rain's in the forecast until Thursday. That's when thunderstorms are likely.
-

A, as in a single, bathroom break :o

Shelters are getting dogs in at about 60 an hour :(
"Animal shelters and rescue groups are taking in numerous pets displaced by the storm ― whether the animals got lost in the chaos, got left behind, or simply need temporary housing while their owners stay in evacuation shelters. Those groups include the SPCA of Texas, Austin Pets Alive!, Dallas Animal Services and the San Antonio Humane Society. Other shelters and rescue groups are also helping."

My late friend, Stanley Rubin, produced that one.

This afternoon, I approved for ACX the final audio version of my novel, JACKIE GOES TO DIXIE.
Fred Frees (Paul's son) did the read and he was terrific.
The book should be available for download in 10-14 days.

Audio versions of 4 of my one-person plays are still in production:
Carole LOMBARD
Spencer TRACY
Clark GABLE
Basil RATHBONE
I'm still looking for somebody to do Errol FLYNN.
Any suggestions?

Three, actually. (I had to get kolaches in West, Texas, after the bathroom break. It was all in the same place.)

It's actually fairly charming. The dancing is really good and it would all be considered insensitive or politically incorrect these days.
-
Four!
-
Hello, everyone.
-
Thanks for posting last night, John G, and letting us all know you arrived safely. What a nasty drive! Glad you survived it!
-
Drying-out vibes to all those in Harvey's path.

After dreaming that Eddie Murphy killed me two nights ago, I thought I'd reached the outa-the-ballpark zone, but I swear last night I dreamed I was a squirrel and my best friend was a bat.
Seriously.
I got a VERY big laugh out of this. Larry wins the contest for most colorful dreams.
Again.

But it was clear and not too sunny until I hit West, Texas. I have to stop there for poppyseed kolaches either coming or going.
I've never heard of kolaches, but my mother was from West, Texas. It was a Czech community then, and I believe it still is.
-
Travel vibes to Larry.
I hope you have a wonderful trip.
-
The photos from Houston and the coast are just heartbreaking.
Yes, they are. Several of the news reports have compared Harvey to other storms, but no one's mentioned Katrina. Is Katrina no longer talked about?
-
I watched MARKED WOMAN this afternoon.
-
We're expected a heat wave starting tomorrow. Ugh.
-
TTFN.

Kolaches are a Czech treat. They're kinda like jelly donuts in that they're yeasty, but they often various types of flavors added. Most of the sweet ones are like a filled cup with something like fruit or cream cheese. The savories more often feature dough wrapped around something, like my favorite, jalapeno-cheddar sausages.
I always get three cherry kolaches, three poppy seed and one sausage.

I saw it so long ago,I don't remember it very well.
Why would it be politically incorrect?
That doesn't sound like Stanley.
-
(http://tideandthyme.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/cherrykolaches1.jpg)
A few kolaches.
-
Glad to know JohnG and Druxy families are doing OK.

One song is an American Indian fantasy with a lot of white people saying ug. It's a bit like Peter Pan's Ug-a-wug-a-wig-wam, which may be my favorite song in that score.
Another is a song in Tijuana and the lyrics are condescending without being too funny.
-

Yes, they are. Several of the news reports have compared Harvey to other storms, but no one's mentioned Katrina. Is Katrina no longer talked about?
I saw a couple of stories asking if Harvey's worse than Sandy or Katrina. I think it's too early to tell.
-
The rains have stopped, the winds have died down. So, of course, the weathermen are talking about flash floods and thunderstorms throughout the night.

Three, still pretty good. With only one I thought you had superhuman abilities ;)

Usually I think if I talked about my dreams I am in the running, but this one tops them all ;D
-
Good night, all.
-
Finished with my viewing, ate a nice Wacky Noodles with chicken, did a little work but not much, listened to some SACDs, and then the rest of the Strauss, Richard set.
-
Tired.
-
Don't know why.
-
Still full from the Wacky Noodles with chicken, which I ate at one o'clock.
-
Page four? Really?
-
I gotta tell you.
-
People? Enough with this page four malarky.

'night. I have a busy day tomorrow.

Good evening!

And where has TCB been? Certainly not here.

Page five? Really?

That rain in Houston is something else.

While here in the City of Studio we've been having a heat wave.

Listening to some Mancini now. One of my favorite childhood albums - Our Man in Hollywood.

Travel vibes to DR elmore.

Continued health vibes to DR Jrand.

I love elmore's dreams.

Weather vibes to DR Druxy and DR John G.

I was very lazy this afternoon.
-
I watched three hours of golf.
-
Then I turned on to the news and sat horrified by the pictures from Texas.
-
Tonight was pizza night.
-
Followed by a nap.
-
My dear friend Betzy called to tell me that her father has been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer.
-
He has opted out of chemo and radiation.
-
He lives in Iowa.
-
Betzy has theater commitments through September, but then she will head back home.
-
It is supposed to be warm here again tomorrow.
-
But not as warm as at Jane's house.
-
Tomorrow I have to get back to work on the book.
-
I still hope to finish the first full draft by the end of September.
-
Of course, if I stopped changing who the murderer was, the book would go faster.
-
Each time I change the murderer, I have to go back and make corrections thru the entire book.

I'm home.

First, I went to my sister's and helped move shelving units and her hope chest from her garage to her bedroom and her daughter's TV room upstairs.

Then, I got to take a half-hour nap before I met my friend Margo for a late lunch.
