Well, you've read the notes, the notes were Shakespearean lite, and now it is time for you to post until the Shakespearean cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: PERIPHRASIS!
-
First post after BK!
-
Hello HHWers. Stayed up to read BK's take on "Romeo & Juliet", since my daughter and I also saw the same performance this evening.
I didn't care for this particular production, but cheers to the actors who took this on, as doing any Shakespeare is challenging and especially considering the many great actors who have performed the most famous roles.
I do like many Shakespearean plays, including West Side Story :)
My first encounter with Shakespeare was the Franco Zefferelli Romeo & Juliet, and I loved that film. As a result sister and I learned the entire play and would do the balcony scene over and over, arguing who had to be Romeo. Hated the Baz Luhrmann version.
As to other favorites, Lawrence Olivier as Hamlet. Peter O'Toole as Macbeth. I saw James Earl Jones do Othello (at the Mark Taper, I believe) which was amazing. And I did love Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor together in "Taming of the Shrew".
-
This is going to be a fairly quiet weekend for me. Today, I'll go to my sister's for our family's weekly family dinner. I've been asked to bring some sodas. That's all I have planned for today. Tomorrow, I have a union meeting. That's my scheduled weekend. Otherwise, I have some TV watching and laundry to do. :)
-
To be clear - I didn't think the "concept" worked at ALL and it actually got in the way repeatedly, plus all the projected history and images along with the songs and a swing dance, added at least twenty minutes to the running time. It also didn't help that the actors were directed to play everything over the top.
-
I've seen some "concept" Shakespeares that worked, and some that didn't.
-
It's late and I can't really think of any, so I'm going to bed.
Have a good day, all!
-
Good morning, all.
-
Got home WAY late last night and got (count ‘em) five hours sleep. Oy. That’s just wrong for a Saturday morning. Maybe sneak in a li’l nap later?
-
So, get this:
We had all these plans to watch Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Right?
And what did we watch? The Cardinal.
Well, these things happen.
-
Good morning to all
-
An IMAX theater is showing 2001: A Space Odyssey. The last time I saw it on a big screen was 50 years ago. I'm going to go.
-
Know what I feel like this morning? No, of course you don’t. So here’s what I feel like. I feel like having an IHOP or a Denny’s or a diner breakfast to get me going. Haven’t had any of that in a while. We don’t even have an IHOP, unfortunately, and that’s what most appeals. But I can accept either of those substitutes.
-
Wherefore art thou, IHOP?
Vixmom will understand. Oh yes. Yes, she will.

Question for ELMOORE
I came across some sheet music: A Salute To Marvin Hamlisch that you arranged online.
What did you do this for?
-
Good morning, all!
-
Vibes to Vixmom
-
I fed the cats and went back to bed for another 90 minutes. I needed it; Thatch was unhappy and wanted me to get up. I dreamed a very good friend was a serial killer.
-
Annabelle's still sneezing but the horrendous effort to breathe is over, and she is eating.
-
Question for ELMOORE
I came across some sheet music: A Salute To Marvin Hamlisch that you arranged online.
What did you do this for?
I didn't write it.
Sadly, no. it is not mine: there are two Larry Moore and I am not this one.
Since I am nearly 72, I believe I've been working longer in the business, but the other Larry Moore is located in the midwest and works for the Hal Leonard Publishing Company in Milwaukee as an arranger for educational music. I get many compliments for his work and I hope that he gets many for mine as well. I'm also pretty certain that we each wish the other Larry Moore would drop dead.
-
So, a beautiful, intelligent high school girl wanted our DR TCB to take her to prom? Why not? Wouldn't it be more pleasant to spend a night out with a charming, funny, sharp-witted, talented, and kind gentleman than a neanderthal jock?
DR TCB, don't you ever doubt it.
-
I'm puttering about home today. I have dusting, books to pull, and a second act to work on.

Does anyone know anyone that can arrange an "accident" for the other Larry Moore? :-)
-
Good morning, all.

Congratulations on the new level reached, BK.
-
I’m tired.

Health vibes for DR Vixmom! DR Jane, and DR TCB! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

TOD:
From the seventh grade on, Shakespeare in the Park was the thug for me. Three plays every summer for five or six years. The first was As You Like It, Macbeth and The Winter’s Tale. Other standouts: The Merry Wives of Windsor, The Tempest, Richard II during Watergate, Cymbeline, Hamlet.
They were never staged out of some distant period. Twelfth Night or Love’s Labor’s Lost was never modern day. Probably so they could reuse costumes.
-
TOD 2:
Favorite filmed versions:
Orson Welles’ Chimes at Midnight
Twelfth Night
The Soviet King Lear
Zeffirelli’s Taming of the Shrew
Titus Andronicus
Forbidden Planet
The 1930s Midsummer Night’s Dream
Tempest
-
TOD 3:
Worst Shakespeare:
Shogun Macbeth — The Actors had to say something Japanese for effect, but it sounded like “nyuk, nyuk” and turned the evening into a Three Stooges farce.
Titus, an outer space rock musical version of Titus Andronicus in which a character dressed as an alien cat walked over to a rock and pulled out a microphone for his big number.
-
Two!
-
T.O.D.
I've done 2 Shakespeare plays: THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, in which I played "Grumio," and a TV version of HAMLET, in which I played "Osric". Both were done during my freshman year at the University of Washington. The actor who played "Claudius" in that production was David Siedler, who won the Best Screenplay Oscar a few years ago for THE KING'S SPEECH.
"Ophelia" and "Katherine" in those productions was played by Marian Hailey, who went on to have a major acting career until she quit in favor of becoming a Psychologist. Among other credits, she was in the Oscar-winning film, LOVERS AND OTHER STRANGERS, and appeared on Broadway in the revival of HARVEY with Jimmy Stewart and Helen Hayes.
When I'm in the mood for Shakespeare, I do enjoy it...particularly when it's staged by a great, innovative filmmaker like Orson Welles (MACBETH) or Laurence Olivier (HAMLET).
-
DR John G, I want to see that Titus production. I could use a really good laugh.
-
TOD:
Favorite plays (I would swear we had this TOD recently):
King Lear
Twelfth Night
Midsummer Night's Dream
Much Ado About Nothing
Favorite film/video versions:
Twelfth Night (Trevor Nunn, with Helena Bonham Carter and Nigel Hawthorne)
Henry V (both Olivier and Branagh films)
The Merchant of Venice (Al Pacino)
King Lear (Ian Holm or Ian MacKellan; in the Olivier video, Olivier is way too coy, but his supporting cast is excellent)
Much Ado About Nothing (Joseph Papp production with Sam Waterston)
Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet & The Taming of the Shrew
Adaptations:
Forbidden Planet
West Side Story
My Own Private Idaho
Desperate Measures
Opera/Ballet:
Verdi: Falstaff
Britten: A Midsummer Night's Dream
Cranko: The Taming of the Shrew
Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet

MEGA VIBES FOR DR VIXMOM!
-
vixmom, thanks for the vibes.
-
vibes for the general manager of DR John. i hope it wasn't too long before someone found her.
-
tcb i am glad you had fun with your classmates and hope you make it to the big event, at least for awhile.
-

-
Vibes for DR JANE
Vibes for DR VIXMOM
-
Glad to hear that ANNABELLE is doing better.
-
Today is the ONLY day this month that I do not have a rehearsal or performance ....
SiSTER ACT is working on choreography for two numbers I am not in...so today is a COOKING DAY!
-
I like to read Shakespeare, but I don't much like concept productions of his work....usually.
I do like:
HENRY V - Branagh
RICHARD III - Olivier and the McKellan version from a few years ago
Romeo & Juliet - Zeffirelli
The Taming of the Shew - Taylor/Burton
And the rock and roll version of The Tempest - Return to the Forbidden Planet....done with rock songs from the 50's & 60's.
-
Lots of rain and thunderstorms today, but since I don't have to go anywhere, it is NOT a problem.
-
Finnish Line....hahahahahaha....
-
I'm up, I'm up - maybe four hours of sleep, more likely closer to three.
-
thank you jrand
-
She of the Evil Eye is here, so guess I'll go do stuff until she's done.
-
Go Do Stuff is the name of the chapter in my book about September.
-
Well made some Manwich today.....with fresh diced green peppers and fresh diced tomatoes.....good on a tortilla or as a sandwich or in a bowl with crunched up Fritos.....
And then tomorrow or Monday, I will put what's left in a pan of macaroni....
And that's my recipe for today....
-
I really must get to the eye doctor one of these days. since I just read that as: "good on a tortilla or as a sandwich or in a towel crunched up"
-
;D
-
Can't call in Manwich anymore - it's either Personwich or Cis-MaleWich
-
Back from stuff.
-
Stuff meaning breakfast and picking up no packages or mail.
-
I read that 91 year old Bill Daily passed away today.

I'm having a bad day painwise.

I watched SISTER ACT the other evening. I had never seen it, but hearing Jrand's mention of it made me want to see it. I enjoyed it more than I expected.

Health vibes to Vixmom and all of the rest of us.

TTFN.

Saturday afternoon greetings! Richard and I had, for us, quite the social whirl yesterday. Went to our former church for a noon premiere of a new one woman show about Clara Driscoll, who worked behind the scenes for Louis Comfort Tiffany designing those beautiful lamps. The presenter, Leanna Renee Hieber (http://www.leannareneehieber.com), grew up locally and now lives in New York. Her parents both taught at the Miami campus here in Middletown and she graduated from Miami University. She did a good job and I hope she gets to perform her show far and wide.
-
We then came home for lunch and went to a late afternoon reception at the offices of the Middletown Community Foundation to meet their new executive director.
From there we met Rob and Mary Linda at the barbecue jernt on Central Avenue to celebrate his 33rd birthday.
That's a lot of socializing in one day for a couple of homebodies!
-
DR Jane, I'm glad to see you've been able to post a bit...
-
DR Vixmom, I'm sending lots of vibes for the tests that are in your future...
-
I just saw 2001: A Space Odyssey in IMAX and in its roadshow version including overture, 15-minute intermission, entr'acte and exit music. This the first time I've seen it on a huge screen. This is how it must have looked in its Cinerama/Super Panavision presentation. The visual effects still hold up and the "light show" is amazing. If it's playing anywhere in IMAX go see it. It's 50 years old and they really don't make movies like this anymore. I don't think I can ever watch it on TV again.
-
Good news DR JANE.
Yes it sounds as if DR TCB is enjoying his trip down memory lane....
DR GINNY is busy this rainy day.
-
I haven't tried it in a towel DR CHAS SMITH - but it's an idea.
MAN WICH......yes MR BK is probably right....I wonder how long it will take for the demands to begin that the name be changed....my guess is they will get around to it...
A couple of weeks ago the animal crackers were freed from their cages....
-
...
DR GINNY is busy this rainy day.
Our busy day was yesterday, DR JRand. All I've done today is help Richard clean up our kitchen, watch Michigan mop the floor of The Big House with Western Michigan, and curate some art supplies.
-
I worked very hard today. Between 10 and 2:30 I stood on a ladder and dusted and pulled books from about 15 feet of book shelves before I crossed to the other wall and worked on six feet of shelves. I found the place where Annabelle lost her footing and fell, and I readjusted the books so she won't fall if she ever goes up there again.
-
Speaking of towels, this is a fun story from the Times Metropolitan Diary.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/26/nyregion/metropolitan-diary-locked-out.html
Since I grew up with incinerators spewing smoke, I don't think I ever ran out with the trash without at least a shirt. But this person who wrote the story seems to still be young.
-
DR Elmore, I'm glad YOU didn't fall!
-
It looks as if I made no dent at all, but I now have six cartons of books to turn over to Connecticut libraries. Then, while I was looking for the CD player remote that was lost in Annabelle's fall. I knocked the lamp off my nightstand and it's now useless. I had a mess to clean up and take to the basement. Then I spent a needless two hours on Amazon looking for the same lamp, but I cannot find it. I may have ordered t from Staples but my order history doesn't go back far enough. I really liked that damned lamp.
-
I don't think I ever ran out with the trash without at least a shirt.
I was going to clean that sentence up, but heck, maybe TCB can come up with something?
-
Many more vibes to vixmom!
-
DR Elmore, I'm glad YOU didn't fall!
Me, too. I was on my tall ladder, so I was 5-7 feet off the ground as well as wrestling with a dust buster and a lot of books! Annabelle and Thatch watched and criticized.
-
Isn't the new rule that you're supposed to say "they" instead of "he" or "she" even if. you're referring to one person?
-

When you go out with the trash, you should keep your shirt and pants on at all times and your wallet at home.

I don't know. I think Val helped because he considered me a friend. I like the new super but I'm not ready to ask him for help with things I can do myself.

Like that Joan Rivers joke when Edgar came to the table in a T-shirt. She said, no, no, no, no no!
At least go and put on some shorts.
And if not for my sake, for your mother's.

Words of wisdom from my aunt and uncle: Always keep dollar bills handy to give a few to a delivery person or the handyman in case.
These days, I guess "keep a few five-dollar bills handy" would be an update.

Interesting to find out that while my 2011-2013 cyberstalker videographer Jonathan Frank's name has not been on the City Center Encores videos in quite a few years (following the dust-up in 2013, they stopped putting the video guy's name in at some point)
are you ready:
The person who has been shooting the rehearsal and show videos (a fellow named Alex Pearlman, who has posted all the recent years' Encores videos on HIS OWN Vimeo account) actually works for the company Reel Time Video, which its owned by -
you guessed it, Jonathan Frank.
-
I've been hooked on the "Me and My Girl" montage and noticed a few editing techniques that looked familiar (I always enjoyed Jonathan's video work long before he started the cyberstalking thing) from old Encores videos, so the trail led me to Alex Pearlman, and then google showed Alex worked for or with Reel Time (which Jonathan owns).
-
Larry, I know you don't care about milestones but -
Happy 47000+.
-
You don't look a day over 46999.
-
thanks Jeanne.
-
bryan suggested i take an advil since i wasn't taking anything else for the pain and to help the swelling. i took it about 45 minutes before we went for a walk and was able to take a decent one.
-
i went for a walk!
:) :) :) :) :)
-
I'm having a bad day painwise.
i am sorry :(

DR Jane, I'm glad to see you've been able to post a bit...

Wherefore art thou, IHOP?
Vixmom will understand. Oh yes. Yes, she will.
We've eaten at IHOP thrice this week, and we've only been in the country since Tuesday
-
I don't know where these days are going or what exactly I'm doing - but I'm not doing what I should be doing - casting.
-
Choosing songs.
-
I know I've been home since noon, so what the HELL have I been doing all this time? I did have a telephonic conversation, that I remember.

Pain free vibes for everybody

My mom just called to let me know her brother has passed away
DR vixmom, your life just jumps from one good time to another! :(
I'm so sorry to hear more about bad tidings in your life.
-
The cats and I have begun the long BBC series The Pallisers.
-
my head is much, much better today which means the nausea is as well. what a relief.
So what ended up happening? They fit you in for a consultation that same day? The next day? And then you had the surgery right away? What did the doc say about your elbow? How long will you be out of commission? And will it heal completely?
-
vixmom, condolences from us.
-
My mom just called to let me know her brother has passed away
Oh no. I'm so sorry. :(

they fit me in for the last appointment after the doctor was out of surgery. he actually never made it but i saw his impressive PA (assistant) who removed my cast, sent me down the hall for new x-rays, ordered surgery for the following afternoon, and put a new cast on.
the surgeon has a great bedside manner and spent a good amount of time talking to me before the surgery. he said due to the delay in getting this fixed i may never gain full motion on my elbow.
due to my soft bones the cast has to stay on 2 weeks instead of one, another delay before i can begin PT.

nope

Yes, my book group read it and I wanted to like it more than I did.
I’m also interested in Rob Lowe’s remake of THE BAD SEED on Lifetime tomorrow.

Thank you for the kind words.
As FJL's "mum" once said , this has been annus terribilis

Wonderful stuff. One of these days I'll watch it again. I love Susan Hampshire's performance as Lady Glencora.

My sympathies and prayers, Vixmom.

Pain-free vibes for Jeanne.
(I originally typed pan-free, but I do hope you have enough pans.)
-
Went dancing tonight, but the floor was so packed with people that it was hard to move on the floor.
-
There was a live band and the music was quite good.
-
Towards the end, I began to get a sinus headache, which I don't think will be gone until the thunderstorm comes in in a few hours.
-
I wanted to finish Paris When It Sizzles, but it may do me in first.
-
Read a new book on the making of Rosemary's Baby, which also features all the on the set photos of Bob Willoughby (there was already a book of his photos, but more here) - it's a handsome book, and for those who don't know anything about the making of the film, it will be a fun read. I knew pretty much all the stories, but there were some new quotes from folks, but I wish it were more in depth instead of just recounting the same old stuff. When you account for all the photos the actual text is probably less than eighty pages. Happy to have it, though.
-
Ira Levin's son Nick is an excellent composer. I wonder if he'll ever musicalize any of his father's work.

One can only hope not. Although... The Boys from Brazil might be fun as a musical romp.

:o Oh, my!
-
Today, my sister made vegetarian enchiladas that were very good. Even my dad who really prefers ground beef in all his Mexican food really liked them. I had two of them (and brought home a third one) and they were too much. I should've had one and taken two home. ::)
-
Topic of the Day (addendum): Harlequin Productions, a local semi-professional theater company, wrote their own musical version of A Rock 'n' Roll Twelfth Night. It really was quite good! They even made two cast recordings.
-
I also really like the Digital Theatre (https://www.digitaltheatre.com/) version of Much Ado About Nothing (https://www.digitaltheatre.com/consumer/production/much-ado-about-nothing) starring David Tennant and Catherine Tate.
-
I read that 91 year old Bill Daily passed away today.

I think that was the title of my sexual adventures.

My condolences to vixmom and family.

At the reunion tonight, two people asked me what the book I am writing is about.
I told them it was a sordid tell-all about the class of 1968 at Wilson High School!
