I sort of barely but not quite got my extra hour of sleep this morning. It’s really hard to explain these time changes to those of the feline persuasion. In the end, I did succeed in prolonging the first cup of coffee in the recliner and feeding them later. And at least intellectually, I do appreciate the extra hour.

Last night I spent a goodly amount of time watching THE FRESHMAN and some supplementary material on Harold Lloyd. From knowing basically nothing about the man up until yesterday, I now find him a very fascinating subject and there will be much more such watching accomplished over the next two weeks.

So why am I suddenly watching Harold Lloyd? Because two weeks from today I’m playing in my first ever silent movie orchestra, for THE FRESHMAN. The score is a recently composed one, and I’ll say more about this — and the whole process which is new and fascinating to me — when I’m not pecking on the iPad.

This week the cats and I watched the 1970s BBC production of Nicholas Nickleby, six episodes over six days.  I enjoyed much of it, but I also felt that some of the more comic characters knew they were funny and worked too hard. I did like Patricia Routledge as Mrs Mantalini quite a lot.  Last night we started the latest BBC miniseries from the late 1990s, which is three and a half hours long and not bad, but it may be too serious, giving the comic characters short shrift.  I did love the portly actress playing Fanny Squeers.

We'll finish that tonight. Then we'll watch the Royal Shakespeare Company's epic production with Roger Rees

So, the main reason for my trip is that my friend Robin is running (well, really walking) in the NYC Marathon.  She's raising money for Barbra Streisand's Women's Heart charity (associated with Cedars Sinai I LA).   Yesterday we picked up her number sign and hung around the COnvention Center, where there were thousands of people taking photos and shopping for marathon related items.

I keep remembering my dream -- which was about the silent film score, involving the score and/or recording downloading process that was needlessly repetitious and bothersome. I shall hopefully be exorcising the dream as I work on that today.

It was very nice of you to offer your garden for the tour.

Sunday afternoon greetings!  Yesterday Richard and I attended the Kiwanis pancake breakfast and delivered some items to the AAUW holiday bazaar venue for next weekend's event.  We were home the rest of the day, as planned.  I switched out the Halloween decor for Thanksgiving, made chile, and watched Michigan demolish Penn State.  In the evening I worked on some items I'm crafting for the bazaar, changed the clocks, and went to bed early.

That's so cool, ChasSmith!  The Washington Center for the Performing Arts (https://www.washingtoncenter.org) here in Olympia has a silent movie series with live organ accompaniment.  I love to go to that every year.  The organist does this around the world and he's fantastic.

I remember years ago, there used to be the Olympia Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Timothy Brock.  He was commissioned to write a new score for Murnau's Sunrise and they recorded it.  The CD is on Amazon HERE (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000005TAL/), currently available for as little as $576.78!

What the....!?

It was $10 when I stayed there a couple of times in 1971/72. This was the Y on 34th and Eighth, and these would have been a couple of quick overnight concert- or opera-going trips from Cleveland back in our student days. Tiny room, more like a jail cell than anything I've seen since, and no bathroom.  But:  a sawbuck.

In a few hours I need to attend the 2019-season announcement party for one of our local theaters. Fortunately it's all over by 7 pm so it doesn't kill the evening.

I wouldn't go, but we're doing another revival of my director friend's Wreck the Halls next December, and this is a different location than before so it's good that we show up. That will be the third run of his show, which is very successful and which he's still tweaking for eventual licensing.

One year ago today I attended a cat-kitten adoption event at the 92nd Street & Broadway Petco. I was looking for a little brother for Annabelle. I had two requirements: he had to be younger than she and he had to have some white in his coat. I checked out all the cats in the back of the store and then walked to the front of the store where they were setting up more cages of cats and there he was: Thatch!

He was three months old, orange and white, a little creamsicle of a kitten, and I was smitten. Cupid's arrow never pierced a heart with more alacrity. Five days later I brought him home. Happy Anniversary, Thatch!

Vixdad tells me to just walk out or to end my days at 5:30 and let things go undone

He may have a point there, even if it is "only" 6:30 or 7:00.  The situation is out of control.

Good luck to Robin!

:o
I'm glad that I bought it when it was new!  I knew that the CD was not the complete score but in reading the comments, I didn't realize (or maybe remember?) that the movie with the complete score had actually been released on DVD.  I may need to find that...assuming it's available and reasonably priced.

Well, that was easy.  HERE (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GG0NABE/) is a listing for a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack that according to one of the reviews includes the score by the Olympia Chamber Orchestra.  I have just ordered it! :D

Thank God we had to wait for a bus back in January.  It was either a bus south to the vet or a bus north to dump him at the Manhattan Animal Care and Control.  He was so unsocialized, I believe they would have euthanized him.

That wait for a bus gave me time to seriously consider what the hell I intended to do about the situation.  I made a commitment, and I am so glad that I did.

Back from this morning's run-through.  The first fifteen minutes of the show were great - almost perfect, and you could just see what this will be when the rest is on par with that.  Then MISS low energy I'm saving my voice came on and took the show right down to the floor, but it picked up again after that.  There's one performance I just need to get energized and authoritative - once that happens the two or three sequences that simply aren't playing well yet, will.  And then the performer who has never once gotten her one scene or song right, screwed it up royally again today, so Doug and I took her to the lobby after - our intention was to let her go, as we've already got it covered, but she was very emotional, had lots of excuses, so Doug took a positive road, gave her one more chance for tomorrow - to run the song ten times in a row and then do the run-through.  If she can't get it right in ten tries and/or the run then she's done.

Vixmom, I'm so sorry about your job situation. Surely your boss knows the long hours your work. Is he simply heartless? If you told him you'll be leaving at a specific time each day--you can use any excuse--then he has the choice to hire more people or take on less work. I know that hiring more people doesn't help if they don't know the job, but it is so unfair to you. I think it you told him ahead of time you'd feel less guilty about it.

Well, this deluxe edition of One from the Heart makes the movie look almost as good as it did when I saw it new in the theater after it was finally released. And it remains one of those most gorgeous movies I've ever seen. The Tom Waits score is superb, and I was surprised that Teri Garr and Raul Julia were even better than I remember. Nastassia Kinski, a performer I never liked, was actually fairly good. Frederic Forrest had a horrible role that he played as best he could. The problem is the script, especially in the presentation of Forrest's sexist, abusive character, and that will always make it less than a masterpiece. I don't want Garr to come back to Forrest at the end. He doesn't deserve a happy ending or her.

Movie title of the day: Eddie, the Sleepwalking Cannibal.

I don't actually want to see the movie, but I love the title.

The exotic title I like but have just not sat through yet is:  (l'm told it gets better as the plot settles in)

"NOTHING RHYMES WITH NGAPARTJI"
https://www.roninfilms.com.au/feature/4689/nothing-rhymes-with-ngapartji.html

about a theater artists trying to get his show "NGAPARTJI, NGAPARTJI" off the ground.

From the comments online, it sound like it raises thoughts of whether they mean perfect rhymes with NGAPARTJI, or if maybe slant rhymes with NGAPARTJI are acceptable.

James D'Arcy and Nigel Danvers were both good as Nicholas, but I thought that Charles Dance as Ralph Nickleby and Lee Ingleby as Smike were better than their earlier counterparts.

Back from what was, as it turned out, a wonderful show - I was really worried about this one because it was so different from our usual bill o' fare, but the audience ate it up.  The opening patter went really well and was really funny and the closing patter worked well, too.  It was a nice-sized crowd and people were really effusive about the show.  The cast did great, each and every one.

Wonderful, congratulations.

I and one of the volunteers were able to get some stuff together pretty quickly.  Since we weren't actually included in the strike schedule, we felt that we were just in the way at that point.  We were let go and now I'm home.

I need to go to bed now.  I want to get to work early so that I can leave early so that I can go to the first rehearsal for A Christmas Story.

Have a good day, all!
