Well, you've read the notes, the notes wanted to vomit on the ground from the foodstuffs, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're happy whenever anyone has a debacle of the foodstuffs.
-
And the word of the day is: LUDIC!
-
Hello.
-
I am still awake.
-
Bruce, sounds like you need to learn how to cook simple, healthy food to keep from future debacles.
Jane, wishing you a restful, refreshing sleep with beautiful dreams.
-
First post after jan, after Jane, after BK!
-
And I'm finally home.
-
Yesterday was a day. I eventually got up and after my morning ablutions and the feedings of my cat and myself, I went to music rehearsal for A Christmas Story. We sang through the songs that we had learned last week, then learned a couple of new group numbers, then we got to leave. I then went to my parents' for our weekly family dinner (this week tilapia), then we played cards (I didn't win).
-
After that, I went to my friend Margo's place and hung out until we left to go to the movies. We saw the 10 pm showing of the remake of A Star Is Born. Both Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper were good. It was a little long, but really well done. I enjoyed it, but didn't love it. This was Margo's fifth time seeing it! I then came home and am about to go to bed.
-
And now, I'm off!
Have a good day, all!
-
Good morning, all!
-
I completely slept through the alarm.
-
I had some strange dream about terrorists, guns, explosives.
-
It's 8 pm and I just woke up
-
I've been fighting a cold all weekend with Zicam and Sambucol
-
It's helping but I'm still tired

Good morning to all

Good morning, all.

TOD, in three categories —
1. The ones that were along the lines of BK’s experience yesterday would be buying a normally delicious deli-made chicken salad and finding bits of gristle or bone. That’s happened a couple of times, at different places, and each time it was several months before I could go back to that particular chicken salad. That same thing has happened with nationally marketed mass-produced products such as Marie Callender’s pot pies, which I find damned tasty until I draw a bad one.
2. In actually becoming ill from a meal, I still remember my first ever night of food poisoning (whether that was the actual cause, who knows) following a meal of some dish at a place in Cleveland we all loved during my college years. I have never succeeded in recalling exactly what that meal consisted of (it had something to do with barbecue, or whatever was being called that then) but it was years before I could go back to anything I thought was similar.
3. Finally, we have the situation in which you take something to be polite, thinking the thing might end up being good or at least not present a problem, and it’s all you can do to get the first bite safely down. I suspect I’ve had a few such instances, but the one that always comes to mind is the pigskin roll (is that what it’s called?) as one of the appetizers in a Thanksgiving dinner at a friend’s house. Fortunately, no one was offended when I didn’t go on with it; it turned out that they mostly made it for the father who had very specific tastes.
-
It’s likely that the food in No. 2 wasn’t bad at all, and I simply stuffed myself or was getting a bug anyway. Fortunately, once I eventually returned to that kind of meal, it turned out to be one of the types of things I’ve loved most ever since.
EDIT: I need to research that. The only possibility for hopefully identifying and recalling that dish is finding a menu from those years. Must make this a project.
-
Which is exactly what happened with my first ever Martini. One sip, and the rest was discreetly poured into the nearest potted plant. Years later, when properly introduced to them in the right context, they were the perfect thing.
-
Well, that’s about enough out of me. Plus, I need to get to some ugly bill paying, some laundry, some food shopping, and then maybe some housecleaning.
-
The title of this play made it difficult to come up with an appropriate cover image.

Monday!
I am horrified by MR BK's experience with his foodstuffs.....
I mostly remember something to do with Wasabi.....which I was not familiar with, but soon decided I didn't like.
And then there was the Reuben sandwich which I had heard of....so I tried one.....sauerkraut???!!! On your sandwich....NO THANK YOU.
I bought a turkey wrap.....that seemed to be made of Buddig turkey....a couple of days before I bought it....
-
I don't think I could see ASIB five times, although I did like it and would like to see it again.....and I bought the soundtrack.
DEAD WAKE....I am waiting for my copy to arrive so I can read it....
-
I watched the documentary about Scotty somebody who wrote FULL SERVICE....the book is okay....the documentary is interesting....he seems to be a hoarder......
It also seems that at $20 session, you can save up to buy a nice house....or two....or three....
-
I am beyond upset at the treatment DR TCB and other cast members are getting.....a THREE HOUR wait for rehearsal to start???
-
Page Two.....DANCE.

This may be the photo that DR VIXMOM was talking about yesterday.

The coming week:
That person who's making big demands on your time? They need a wake-up call. Be nice about it, and make sure they understand that you love and adore them, but be direct. All week you'll be getting things done this way -- with polish, but not a lot of fuss. Such are the tactics a busy person like you must adopt. Make sure your desk (or car, or house) is clean and tidy on Thursday (or you won't be able to think straight) and then, on Friday and through the weekend, brace yourself for a series of deep and meaningful adventures with your greatest pal (or lover). This is quite a week for you.

Good morning.

It appears I picked up a virus of some kind at Disneyland.

Mouse Virus vibes for DR LAURA.

TOD:
I can't think of any good stories right now, although I'm sure I have some. But just last night, I was reprimanding Mark for going to Langers for their famous pastrami several times without me and not bringing me home a sandwich. He insists it would be terrible as leftovers. The bread would be soggy, etc. I keep saying I could get a new roll, or he could separate the sandwich for me and still bring it home, and I could nuke the whole thing, and it would be fine. He gets grossed out every time I describe the process.

Jane:
The Crimes of Grindelwald
Thank you.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Amy, I agree with Mark.
-
I haven’t seen The Holiday. I was curious but less so after the notes.
-
BK, I wish you all the best with the slackers in your cast. Highly unprofessional.
-
As a reformed food critic, I have plenty of horror stories that could fill pages here. I’ll limit this post to my first week on the job, when I wondered if I had made the right move.
The first restaurant was an oversized Mexican place near the hotel. The chili sauce on the cheese enchiladas might have been dirty dish water that served only to make the enchiladas soggy. The margarita was so sweet it made me gag. The salsa with the chips was flavorless red water. Worst of all were the ref rides, which were so boiling hot that they burned my tongue. Imagine something microwaved with metal in it. And in an hour, they never cooled down.
Then, a few days later, there was an Italian place on the River Walk where the smoked chicken tasted like I was licking an ash tray while the tiramisu was frozen solid at the center. Almost 20 years later, I can still taste that chicken.
-
I thought it was lunch time until I read DR JOHN G's post....now not so much....
-
Good afternoon!
-
Sorry you didn't have a good day, TCB.
-
In 1978, four young people working in a Burger Chef fast food restaurant in Speedway were kidnapped....and all of them were found murdered in a nearby county.
NO arrests or leads have EVER been found. A new detective is on the case and now trying to work with DNA found at the scene, etc.
And of course, the two young girls whose bodies were found a few days after they disappeared near Delphi, Indiana, in February, 2017, no clues, no suspects.....

Nice photo of DR vixmom and company!

Mac and cheese goes well from the freezer to the microwave, for thawing, then into the oven for cooking. Just add vegetables, salad, or whatever.

Let’s move on...
-
Three!
-
I'm up, I'm up - maybe seven hours of sleep.
-
ChasSmith, I’m so glad you had a sold-out house for the movie. I’ve only seen one silent movie with live organ music, Broken Blossoms. It’s been more than 30 years, and I’d like to do it again.
-
In honor of BK’s notes, I’m having chicken enchiladas with a tomatillo salsa. These are good.
-
I hadn’t thought of that showing of Broken Blossoms in years. Lillian Gish was in attendance and I got to meet her briefly at a press conference. The event was the placing of the movie theater on a historic registry. it was in Lexington, Kentucky, which was near where DW Griffith was from, so she came to pay him homage, tell stories and enjoy seeing one of her movies she made for him.
-
I've seen a bunch over the years, but my real appreciation for them developed several years ago when I attended CapitolFest, an annual weekend-long celebration of the years that the Capitol Theater in Rome, NY was first opened. With just a couple of special exceptions, they run nothing but films that were seen there in their first couple of years, and others from the same period. All silents are accompanied by two or three of the top silent film organists. (Robert Israel is one, and one of his recorded DVD tracks (I forget which at the moment) was made on that very organ.
Once you sit through a few, or through an entire weekend of them, or through a couple of those weekends (I've been up there twice and will happily go again sometime), the "feel" for the films of that era gets into your bloodstream, so that watching and enjoying them becomes second nature...as opposed to a "new and unfamiliar experience" that silent film watching would be otherwise. I can now get just as excited about a new silent release on DVD or Blu-ray as for anything else.
-
However, I'd never seen one accompanied by an orchestra, even though there have been many opportunities.

So here's what yesterday's setup looked like. This was a presentation by the Waterbury (CT) Symphony Orchestra, and the dozen or so players for this piece were stupendous. It was shown/performed in a brand new theater complex, in the one auditorium they designed for live presentations of various types. I think this was their first silent film. They said this room seats around 140. It would accommodate many more with traditional seats, but all the new state-of-the-art theaters are going with this kind of luxury seating. Looks like you can click to enlarge these.
-
Nice setup.
-
The view from top center, with the 13-piece orchestra setup. We were on break between our morning rehearsal and run-through with the film and the performance.
-
The conductor would be blocking lots of people's views if standing in the center, so he conducted from the side, which he probably still would have done if the score had been written for a larger orchestra. A 1925 film of course does not take up the full width of the screen, and the bottom of the picture was raised to just about where people's heads were, so that all worked out very well. This audience was there not only to see the film, but to also enjoy seeing the music played.
-
The keyboard department.
-
This was a new score composed by Sheldon Mirowitz in conjunction with seven of his students at Berklee College of Music where they offer one of the few film scoring courses anywhere. Sheldon was there yesterday and he explained that each student is assigned one reel of a given film, The Freshman being a seven-reel feature. He provides themes and ideas, and oversees their composition to make sure that the final result is cohesive and doesn't sound like the work of seven wildly divergent composers. I think we're the ninth venue to have screened/played this one. I loved the score (way more than the Carl Davis one on the Criterion label) and hope to hear - and yes, perform - others.
-
I didn't realize the keyboard department would be so large.
-
I wouldn't, however, take the conductor's job (or, in theory, a solo musician's job) for anything. They must keep the music strictly in sync with the movie by watching it on their own screen. Their copy is a "p & s" one with superimposed "punches and streamers" constantly flying by. (Don't ask.) We were given copies of it to see what it was all about, which I'm very glad to have, but I don't imagine ever learning to competently use such a thing myself.
This system would be similar to how symphony orchestras are able to play along with West Side Story and whatnot. Our conductor had performed a few other silent scores, and he said this was the most challenging. One reason is that in a comedy, you're going to have any number of comedic "hits" and sound effects going on. For the players, it's a new form of "live theater" in which a lot of tense moments can, and did, occur. Loved it, though.
-
I didn't realize the keyboard department would be so large.
I'm just being silly calling it a "department". There are only two there - which, in a film score composed for 13 players, would be pretty typical.
-
I shall now be on my way to rehearsal.
-
I am beyond upset at the treatment DR TCB and other cast members are getting.....a THREE HOUR wait for rehearsal to start???
I know! I can't imagine anyone trying to get away with that. :-\

Rehearsal and staging vibes for MR BK & Co.
DR CHAS SMITH thanks for the lowdown and photographic evidence of your gig....most entertaining and informative.....
-
There is something I did once 30 years ago that I would like to do again, but unlike DR JOHN G, it has NOTHING to do with silent movies OR Lillian Gish....or Dorothy Gish for that matter.
-
DR ELMORE must be busy today......

BK: the answer to all foodstuffs issues is matzo ball soup :)
Hello HHH folk---
Just want to share that we saw the Sunday matinee of A CAROL CHRISTMAS, it is a delightful show, lots of energy and the cast is clearly having fun. (one of my daughters is swing for the show, she had a great time working with BK and the cast on this).
Unlike musicals like DEAR EVAN HANSEN (which I enjoyed very much), A CAROL CHRISTMAS has memorable melodies that you'll be humming as you leave the theatre. "Little Miracles" and "This Christmas" are two of my favorite songs, both done admirably by the cast.
A good Thanksgiving to all!
-
DR ELMORE must be busy today......
I have been occupied with a score and two cats.

It appears I picked up a virus of some kind at Disneyland.

Monday afternoon greetings! I’ve spent today finishing up one Thanksgiving prep task and getting ready to do another one tomorrow. We’re going to my niece’s in Illinois and she, my sister, and I will continue our Black Friday crafting tradition. For that I’ve die cut the pieces for the first 24 of the 40-50 party favors I’m making for a spring DAR meeting. On Friday I’ll assemble them in Laura’s fabulous craft studio.
Tomorrow’s task is pie baking, so I just returned from Kroger.

Thanks for the on the spot report DR leichenfou

That’s why I’m starting now, DR JRand! We don’t need them until May 7, but I have to get them to my co-host to fill them with candy and other treats.

Good afternoon.

Page four by 3:00 p.m. on the left coast. Pretty impressive.

Working on lines.

I took a nap earlier. I didn't sleep well last night.

Goodbye.

I didn't realize the keyboard department would be so large.
I'm just being silly calling it a "department". There are only two there - which, in a film score composed for 13 players, would be pretty typical.
I didn't look at the area closely or would have noticed there are only two keyboards. I am the silly one.

I am beyond upset at the treatment DR TCB and other cast members are getting.....a THREE HOUR wait for rehearsal to start???

DR leichenfou thanks for the show report.

I know! I can't imagine anyone trying to get away with that. :-\
And yet, they did. Would you have complained about the wait, say after an hour?
I think that people I know would've complained after about 15 minutes. And if nothing was happening at all, people probably would've started leaving.
-
That isn't much of a wait at all. DR TCB did anyone leave or complain?
-
DR JANE I would have been very unhappy, but I probably wouldn't have said anything. When you are in a situation like that, there is usually the feeling that something will start "any second"....and you certainly don't want the rest of the cast waiting around for YOU if it does.....
-
That would be me.
-
I'm still trying to "process" TCB's story of the three-hour delay.
Apologies if I somehow glossed over things and missed this, but how in the HELL did that happen? What was said about it?
I guess we can all say this, but that is simply beyond my imagining.
-
It is mind boggling.
-
And on a sad note, MY KINDLE DIED!! :( :'( >:( I went to lunch and when I went to turn it on, it didn't turn on. I then held the on/off switch to try and reboot it, but again nothing happened. I brought it back to work and plugged it into my computer with a USB cable to see if powering it up might do anything and NOTHING! My computer couldn't even read it as an external hard drive like it's supposed to.
-
CRAPBALLS!!
-
Of course, this was my third Kindle. My first one died just like this, and I still have my second, which I misplaced and thought that I had lost, so I unregistered from Amazon and THEN found it, so I can't add any Amazon Kindle titles to that. But I do have that one with titles still on it.
-
Sorry. Will you order a new one online or go someplace like Best Buy and check out your options?
-
This third Kindle, I got used for only $10, so I'm not losing very much, but I only had it since last year. Fortunately, when I get another one, I can re-download all my purchased Kindle titles that I had on the third one. However, I'll have to place holds again on all of the library's OverDrive titles that I want to get again. I was about 65% through Robert Galbraith's* Lethal White.
*A.k.a. J.K. Rowling.

I didn't know that Best Buy has Kindles, but I'll look around. I don't need (or want to pay for) the latest and greatest version of Kindle, so we'll see what's out there again.
-
I just placed another hold on Lethal White, and I'm #73 on 8 copies. :P
-
Back from the first of this week's three rehearsals for the revue. I got most of the group numbers staged, and did a couple of solos - keeping everything fun but simple. Pretty funny stuff.
-
Stopped at the mail place and happily the replacement check was there - postmarked 11/13 - six DAYS to get from Burbank to Valley Village - the drive takes approximately six MINUTES. I have a good mind to call the Burbank post office and raise some hell.
-
Then I got the money in the bank, then stopped at a nearby Subway and got the spicy Eyetalian foot-long, which I'm eating right now.

I was just glancing at them the other day. You can check on their website as well. I like to see the quality of what I am buying if it is something I haven't used before.

DR George, Best Buy has LOTS of sales and promotions. I suggest you get on their email list.

Bruce, there are some very good frozen meals available. Most of them are for meat eaters, but that won't bother you. You could try a few and see which ones are keepers. Cheaper than the ones you were ordering online.

I'm glad the pension check finally arrived. I've had instances where someone told me something had been "sent" only to learn that what they really meant is that the request had been put into the computer. Which, of course, is quite different than a check having been put in the mail.
-
I must catch up. I'm missing aspects of stories.
Or I'm just getting older.

It has gotten quite damp and chilly here. We're told that rain is headed our way, which can't be soon enough to help the firefighting efforts.

While I have never been a fan, my brother still orders apple pies from the Apple Pan. Last November he was excited about a new place near Barney’s called “Winston Pie Shop”. He thought their blueberry and cherry pies were the best. He thought the apple was good but nothing special.

Well Jane, that would work if I didn't check it back in as soon as I download it. With my Kindle(s), I do NOT turn on the Wi-Fi. I go online to my library's OverDrive site (or Amazon directly, if I'm actually buying something), then when I check out something, I use the "Transfer via computer" option and download it through a USB cable. That way, it never goes away from my Kindle (except when my Kindle dies) and I can keep it as long as I want, and can take as long as I want to read it.

Check your library status online. You should still show the book checked out and download it again on the Kindle. At least that is how my EPUB books work.
You are considerate to return them immediately. I would be afraid of exactly what just happened and losing the book I was reading. What a shame the book you are reading is currently popular.

Stopped at the mail place and happily the replacement check was there - postmarked 11/13 - six DAYS to get from Burbank to Valley Village - the drive takes approximately six MINUTES. I have a good mind to call the Burbank post office and raise some hell.
Soooo, BK...why don't you use direct deposit?? ???
It's complicated.
-
The reasons, that is.

Watched the first half of the new 2001 Blu-ray. So far, most of it looks quite good.

This may be the photo that DR VIXMOM was talking about yesterday.

That is indeed the picture in question. Thank you , Jack

This is what they have st the theatre where I often attend Fathom events... It's awfully easy to doze off in those luxurious recliners

DR leichenfou thanks for the show report.
And more thanks. Really looking forward to that CD.

I must catch up. I'm missing aspects of stories.
Or I'm just getting older.
I like the latter reason/excuse. I use it often.
:)

I just watched an oldie the likes of which they couldn't make any more with a straight face: Take the High Ground!
The title comes complete with exclamation point. It's a military flick with Richard Widmark, Karl Malden, Russ Tamblyn and well, silliness that somehow earned the script an Oscar nomination way back when.

I also finished the new Barbara Kingsolver, Unsheltered, today. Not one of her better efforts. Very pedantic. Bad dialogue and a fairly redemptive ending. But as bad as it was, it had moments scattered here and there that suggested it could have been much better.

Good night, all.
-
Mixes sound great - have to finesse a couple of things, which I can do over the phone.

I will skip it, not that I was rushing to read it.

Speaking of reading, I really must finish this book.
-
I finished my book, dozed, and am reading and falling asleepagain.

Good evening.
-
Sorry I am late. I lost track of time.
-
I guess George lost track of time, also.
-
Thank you to one and all for getting us to page six!!
-
Congratulations to BK and Company for that great review.

Yup. ::)

And on that note (A-natural), I'm off to rehearsal. Tonight is more music-learning, so I'll be singing.
Be back later.
We learned a few group numbers, including my Santa Claus song, "Up On Santa's Lap." The kids were VERY excited to learn this one!
-
I don't have to go to rehearsal tomorrow night.
-
My next rehearsal is Sunday.

I know...and because I can't even get the Kindle to turn on, I can't see what all was on there.
