Title: GIVING THANKS ON THANKSGIVING, OR TURKEY LURKEY TIME
Post by: bk on November 22, 2018, 12:59:48 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes gave thanks on Thanksgiving, and now it is time for you to post until the Thanksgiving cows come home - they're currently giving thanks that everyone eats turkeys rather than beef.

Today, the family is getting together at my parents' house.  I made a chocolate turtle cheesecake that looks like it turned out well.  I'm sure that it'll taste as good as it looks. ;D

I set my DVR to record the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.  I like to record the songs from musicals and put them on a DVD.  I haven't heard about which Broadway shows/people will perform.  It'll be a surprise.  But first, time for sleep, and I get to sleep in today!

Have a good day, all!

The most amazing little thing happened a while ago. I was thinking about whether I had anything of note to contribute to the TOD, and I decided to pursue what my earliest memories of Thanksgiving might be. The first really distinct memory is from when I was around 6 or 7 years of age. We were living in Whitehall, the then-newest suburb of Columbus, and Thanksgiving was at my grandparents' house on the north side of Columbus. I think we must have spent the night there, and my impression was that the preparation of a turkey required my mom and grandmother to get up, like, before dawn to start on it. An exaggeration, of course, but that's what it was.

So, as I was mulling over that memory and wishing there could be a lot more to it, a part of last night's dream came rushing through like the proverbial freight train. I had just dreamed about that very house, probably for the first time in a few decades. That setting then morphed into another dream that was very distinct and which even developed into a nightmarish moment which is what woke me up. But I hadn't remembered this first part until thinking about the TOD. And so I give thanks to the TOD. Thank you, TOD.

I might post more later, but this is the house at the time my grandparents bought it in the early-mid 1950s. The property was an acre, which we all thought was huge. They did a lot to the house over the next few years, and that property and the neighborhood hold very dear memories for me. It just happens that last night's dream involved me driving through there on a visit to Columbus, and trying to find traces of the actual property. My grandfather had died in 1959 and my grandmother sold the place when she moved to Florida the following year. It went to developers who wiped everything out and built a few apartment buildings. On actual real-life drives through there in subsequent years, nothing was recognizable. But in the dream I was doing it again, and I was discovering that there WERE traces -- if only I could find the right alley or neighbor's driveway or something. But I even had trouble finding a side road that had connected to it (and that's still there, nothing happened to the roads themselves). Then, as I said, the dream morphed into another in which I was living in an apartment that felt like L.A. and truly seemed to have no connection to apartments having been built on that property. Oy!

Ugh.....that number from KING KONG - besides being lip-synched - but not a GOOD song....and the actress was NOT good, although her singing of the crap song was okay....and Kong himself was interesting.....

BUT Anne Darrow was unique because she was pale and blonde....that is why the natives and Kong thought she was so different....having an African American actress play the part takes away a LOT of the frisson......

T.O.D.

1. As I've mentioned in past years, my most memorable Thanksgiving occurred when I was about 13 years old and I told a joke at the dinner table that ended with the "F word," which sent everybody home immediately afterward.

2. My son and his g.f., who moved to Austin 2-3 weeks ago, will be joining us, so this will be the first family Thanksgiving we will have since we moved here almost 10 years ago.  Time does fly.

The last scene of the play calls for Virginia's father to read the editorial out loud to the family.  I have my doubts that anyone, regardless of their reading skills, could make this entire editorial sound interesting.  Unfortunately our father does not possess those reading skills.

Thanks to MR BK for answering my questions yesterday.

AND NOW becuase I left my participle dangling, I shall tie it up.  I needed the igniter AND the motherboard on my heat pump replaced - it is over ten years old - and that was an additional $350....

The total repair was $855 - which is more than I have paid for several of the cars I have owned in my long life.

There are no hockey games on free tv tonight, so I am not sure what I will watch.  Perhaps I shall view a disc.

At any rate.....is it nice and warm in the house.

I have to get off the computer because it is dark and Birdy Barnum says it's time to put the cover on and get out of his room....

I went to Ralph's to get ingredients for Wacky Noodles.  It was a madhouse - at one-thirty on Thanksgiving day!  Unbelievable.  I was in and out in ten minutes eight of which were spent in the checkout line.

Unfortunately I forgot the sour cream so I went directly to Gelson's.  It, too was crowded, but mostly the deli and cake counters.  I got my sour cream and was in and out in two minutes.

I decided to watch one of the streaming movies we get codes for - Can You Ever Forgive Me.  I liked it pretty okay.  Melissa McCarthy is very good as author Lee Israel and Richard E. Grant will, I'm sure, be nominated - he's terrific.  Some of the supporting performances are wonderful, including Jane Curtain as Lee's agent.  And someone named Molly Parks, whose work I don't know at all - she's great.  It's directed competently, save for the awful songs that play on the soundtrack - they really need to dispense with that hoary device for a while.  Even though the film takes place in the early 1990s, it's shot like it takes place much earlier than that.  The background score is like all background scores these days - pointless.  Just background and nothing to do with actual movie scoring.

I didn't mind watching it on the computer - I have a twenty-seven inch monitor and made it full screen, so it was fine.  I may watch The Old Man and the Gun now the same way.

Did anybody who watched the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade see Kelly Clarkson?  Was she singing live?  If not that is the best lip synching job I've ever seen.  I think I preferred the musical numbers on the CBS show (done at the theatre). Watching people lip sych in frigid temperatures wearing skimpy clothes is not that appealing.

I just looked it up and found this headline: Yes, Kelly Clarkson Actually Sang Live During the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

I think that she was the only one. And it made a huge difference. Most of the others are horrible lip synchers. And some on the floats were not even singing at the same time as the recording. The camera kept going away from the singer because it was so ridiculous.

One of the things that I like about the show is the perspective it gives on life in Australia in the 1950s and 1960s. Until I watched it I've never thought about post-WWII life there. An interesting backdrop, I think.

I like a bargain as much as the next person, but I find the Black Friday frenzy so OTT. Electronics I can understand; it just seems fitting somehow. Is there anything that doesn't get the Black Friday treatment? I did check a few items on Amazon that I've had my eye on. One of them has dropped in price, but only one. Maybe tomorrow will be a different story.

And no, I will NOT be out in the stores. Fine for some, but online shopping works best for me. I was so not born to shop.

THIS (https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/7714/chocolate-turtles-cheesecake-i/) is the recipe that I used.  The only changes that I made were that I used a graham cracker crust instead of the vanilla wafer crumbs, and I added some unmelted mini chocolate chips to the batter. :)

Oy!

Consider yourself lucky, Jrand.  My parents had to replace their tankless water heater.  That cost about $750 (including tax but shipping was free), which I guess isn't a bad price.  However, the installation itself was a little over $3000! :o

Yes, something was off with Rita Orr.  It looked like she didn't realize it, so I think the directors probably did what they could to minimize the situation.

That was on CBS.  I'm still going through the NBC broadcast.  I don't have nuch left, then I'll watch the CBS broadcast.

Karen, who runs the box office at TLT, made the cheesecake; but she said she refused to take home any leftovers.

Don't you hate it when that happens? ;)

Cool.  I don't really know him very well, but he seems like a nice guy.

I know it was on CBS.  I was just saying that was the only number I saw.

I didn’t get to spend much time chatting with him, but he seemed nice. He knew who you were.

I just ask if he knew you, and he said you were playing Santa Claus.  But, of course, I already knew that.

I wasn't planning on it.  I'm running sound for a show at OLT, and I think they might be too close to each other, even if they might not overlap.

Bunbury.  Broadway Olympia's show after The Wedding Singer is Young Frankenstein, and that opens four days after Bunbury closes, so those definitely are too close together.

I have never heard of Bunbury.

It's a comedy (I'm pretty sure) and all the characters of this play are characters from other plays that are mentioned but never seen in those plays. :D

Most unseemly, but someone has to do it so it may as well be me.
