Title: AN UNUSUAL TURN OF EVENTS
Post by: bk on May 20, 2019, 12:02:47 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were unusual and had events, and now it is time for you to post until the unusual cows come home.

So, I have a staff member who's been out on extended medical leave since late January, and today will be her first day back!  She's been cleared (so far) to work two hours a day for the next two weeks.  Then, they'll re-evaluate and hopefully she can work more hours, eventually coming back full time.

I slept well.  I couldn't stay awake watching a Poirot episode, so the cats and I were in bed by 8:30.  I had a lot of weird dreams I no longer remember well enough to tell, but by 6:00 I was ready to get up.  The cats are fed and I am on my first cuppa coffee.

Stella and A & T are relating.  She clearly wants to play with them, and they mostly seem to tolerate her.  She needs more correction from Annabelle, and I hope that continues.  Annabelle wanted to mother Thatch when he came in, and I'm hoping that she will do the same to Stella.  Just now Stella ran up to Thatch and hugged him, then ran off.  Thatch sat there doing nothing.

I always liked the little notes that were passed around that formed a lot of the novel "Up the Down Staircase" - but the movie did quite a nice job of making the very unusual novel into a  linear story.

In some ways, it would be like telling a story today entirely through emails.  It allows different views of the same thing, for example, without breaking the narrative.

That was where I first learned that to file something into the circular file could  mean put it in the trash can.

And one of my faves is that "Let it be a challenge to you" really meant "you're stuck with it."  :)

I loved UP THE DOWN STAIRCASE....which my brother and I saw at the drive in on a double bill with BONNIE & CLYDE.

I went back twice during the week to see those movies.  On Monday night, I was the only car left in the lot to see the end of STAIRCASE.

The first film that popped into my mind was THE BLACKBOARD JUNGLE w/ Glenn Ford and Sidney Poitier.

Saw it when it first came out and, under the credits, when they were playing "Rock Around the Clock," the whole audience was clapping along with the music.

Strangely, of all works, Legally Blonde years later was more realistic about student life at Harvard Law School than the Paper Chase film -  though it's possible that by 1980, Harvard Law was trying to get rid of that Kingsfield image.

TCB: No, I never met Sierra during her run of Phantom in Las Vegas.   I did meet her after a concert of Brent's in NYC.  I think it was at Birdland.  I remember telling her, knowing how big a fan she was, that Barbra S would be performing in NY a few months later.  She thanked me.  Maybe she already knew and was just being polite.   Brent's partner (now husband) took about 4 photos of Sierra and me and my eyes were closed in every one of them.

ADDENDUM, Part the Second

I’d probably include Up the Down Staircase, To Sir With Love, and The Blackboard Jungle, each of which I *probably* saw years ago but I have scant if any memories of them. I did, however, read UTDS back then, and remember liking it, and it’s very likely I went to the film as soon as it opened. I’d like to watch all three of these now.

It's a beautiful film, nostalgic in its early 1940s French boardingschool days, and then it kicks hard; the ending is absolutely devastating, giving the title an ironic and tragic twist.

Good morning, good day, how are you this wonderful day, which has yet to be wonderful?  I got seven hours of sleep - very noisy morning with dinging texts, noisy workers next door, and phone ringing.  I was up at eleven, answering e-mails, and listening to Diana Canova read a bit of GEE, which was fun.  I think it's going to come down to her and one other gal, who's much younger.  I may ask that younger gal to read some of the ninety year old GEE, just a page to see how she deals with it - Diana could do that without a problem, but her younger GEE and Peyton aren't quite right but she's so good I'm sure if we chat she'd just be fine.  But I have no idea if she'd do it on a royalty share of if she'd do it for the 50 an hour that's on the table should they not want royalty share.

I actually listened to several candidates for both books, then I had to go to the mail place only to find no important envelope had arrived - they tell me it was sent but not WHEN - it was due on Saturday, not today, not tomorrow, not a week from now.  So, when it's due on Saturday, it means they should mail it at the beginning of the week.  I suspect they mailed it on Thursday or Friday.  Pathetic.

That's great, keep up the good work.  How much in total have you lost?

I just spent 45 sweaty minutes moving furniture around to accommodate the air conditioner and realized I didn't need to. Oy!

Now you know ;)

Strangely, of all works, Legally Blonde years later was more realistic about student life at Harvard Law School than the Paper Chase film -  though it's possible that by 1980, Harvard Law was trying to get rid of that Kingsfield image.

Interesting.

I would like to see that.

So, I have a staff member who's been out on extended medical leave since late January, and today will be her first day back!  She's been cleared (so far) to work two hours a day for the next two weeks.  Then, they'll re-evaluate and hopefully she can work more hours, eventually coming back full time.

Wishing her well on her 1st day back.

Thanks, Jane!  She was here and was kind of in shock at her cleaned office ;) and will just be figuring out what's what again for the next few days.

I expect the clean office was the best gift she could receive on her first day back :)

OMG, you got ‘em. What’s going on??

His health and my guilt over my financial straits.  I haven't been able to afford his atenelol for his heart since December, and he's going in for an echocardiogram tomorrow to check his heart.  I hope the results are good, but i'm scared shitless.

Understood. I was scared that he was in a crisis situation right now.

Strong vibes to the both of you. I know what it’s like to endure a night and a morning in fear of something.

So was I.

I know that feeling too well.

My Father’s Castle/My Mother’s Glory
Clueless

Clueless
Heathers

I would add these!  I love Au Revoir Les Enfants, but it's too painful and heartbreaking to watch again.  I needed to be carried out of the theatre at the end.

Yup. I felt the same way. It took a lot to watch that. I can imagine all it took on Louis Malle’s part to be honest about his own role in the story. Devastating.

I have never watched it again.

Listened to the Kostelanetz cover of Flower Drum Song - it's great.  Never on CD, unless I missed it.  Mono on Columbia.  And now listening to Melachrino do Bells Are Ringing, which is equally as good.

Are you having one person read the whole book?  Have you thought about having two people read it?  One for each of the two women, even though it's not in the first person?  Just a thought.

Almost finished with Vincent and Theo. A few facts were played with, if one is to believe the stories from the exhibition. But there is one scene that was just amazing of Vincent painting a canvas. There's such excitement in his efforts to capture what he's feeling that even the paint can be seen running off his palette.

I had another spam call today - they spoof numbers in your area and assign a name to it, in this case Joe Lee.  I answered and heard a recording, telling me that utility bills can be cut by half and if I hadn't applied yet to press 1.  I did, and got a really nice Indian lady on the phone.  After she said hello, I interrupted her starting her scripted spiel and said, "Please put me through to Joe Lee."  She said, "I don't understand."  I said, "Put me through to Joe Lee - that's who my phone said was calling me and he's who I want to speak to right now.  I'm ready to give you my credit card and social security number and banking information, but I don't feel comfortable unless I'm talking to my new friend Joe Lee."  She hung up.

It is (and there are many different versions), but my library doesn't own it.  I can't suggest it, either because I suggested something last week, and the library's (not OverDrive's) policy is only one suggestion every two weeks.
