Well, you've read the notes, the notes were neither here nor there, and now it is time for you to post until the neither here nor there cows come home.

I will go to the market early while mosdt of my neighborhood sleeps.  I need to purchase a few items, and when I return, I will make a vat of chili.

DR vixmom, real estate is cheaper in the midwest.  Still, that place seems awfully big for just Randy and Jo.  It looks about the size of the house they are currently in.

Sunday morning greetings!  I've just "attended" the Facebook Live service at First United Methodist Church of Springboro, where our niece Rev. Amy is pastor.  She did a fantastic job in spite of being nervous about it being her first time conducting an online service.  Her sisters Jen and Lauren were online, too, along with Lauren's mother.  Next best thing to being there!

Yes, I may have said here before that we live in a house that we could not afford even in the Cincinnati or Dayton suburbs, much less on the east or west coasts.

DR Elmore, they'll be a lot farther from Middletown now, but somewhat closer to Oxford.

The most famous use of scordatura is the solo violin in Saint-Saens' Danse Macabre.  The solo violin is instructed to tune the E-string to E-flat so that the open strings G,D, and A, with E-flat,
are not perfect fifths and it sounds like a poorly tuned violin.

DR Ginny, several years ago I was browsing some cost of living comparisons, and it always surprised me that Cincinnati ranked as one of the most affordable of the large cities. But these websites or charts I was looking at didn't go into any detail about each place's surrounding areas, which I supposed should logically be even less expensive. And of course these comparisons will change over time, so who knows what I'd find now. It sounds like you're in an ideal situation there. I think that whole area is damned nice.

(To clarify, it surprised me because I think of Cincinnati as a really fine metropolis!)

The articles in the NY Times and elsewhere about individuals who are very largely responsible for store shelves being empty and how they've been profiteering off of that, are just sickening. I'm mind-boggled that they even have the nerve to come forward and be exposed in national publications. And they clearly believe that because of Amazon, eBay, etc., cracking down on this, that THEY are victims and heroes. You can't twist logic much more than that. These people are scum.

I think the chili has turned out quite good.  I won't know for sure before I have some, but it looks and smells delightful.  I'm letting it all sit and blend for the next couple of hours, and once it's cool I'll pack it up and freeze most of it.

THIS PANIC IS A SCAM!

And, frankly, THE CONSTANT NEWS COVERAGE IS MAKING IT WORSE.

Yes, there is a virus going around, but it's really only dangerous to older people, like myself, or people with underlying health conditions of a certain type.

Although my hunch is that there's a political motive behind it, I don't really know who's responsible, but this PUBLIC PANIC to get water and toilet paper and other goods from grocery stores is bulls**t!

Yet, businesses are shutting down; planes aren't flying; people are "coming to blows" in stores; and the madness isn't stopping.

THE WORLD IS NOT COMING TO AN END!

We both thought it was very good!  Of course, the Pixar movies tend to manipulate your emotions, and this no exception, but it really was a good movie.  It got an 87% Fresh rating and a 95% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes (https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/onward)!

From Bruce:
Quote
Back from a good show and a very small audience but a good one.  About half the reservations were no-shows - would have been a nice house, otherwise.  The theater has spent a lot of money making sure everything is clean, the box-office, concession, and ushers wear gloves - but you can't fight hysteria - I'm sure the no-shows were at the market.

Were you able to let everyone know what steps you took to do this?

The one thing this is not is a political plot.  The panic and hysteria is palpable and I've spent two full notes talking about the reasons for it, which, for me, are simple: The media's glee in how they're dealing with this - they do live for this stuff and the ratings and clicks it brings - and social media fueling it in a way that is unheard of - the swine flu of a decade ago cause no panic shopping, no nothing, because social media was nothing then like it is today.  People post all those empty shelf photos and people's insanity automatically kick in and panic and hysteria ensues.  Last night, Facebook was filled with posts from people saying they'd be up at six in the morning to hit the market, so everyone does that.  It's human nature and not the good part of human nature.  Then you have people who are truly evil buying up this stuff for resale - when I see photos of the lines in Costco I see a bunch of smiling mom and pop store owners who get their stuff from big box stores, because they know they can immediately mark up this stuff and get away with it.  And then there are the people, and these I've seen with my own eyeballs, who go to the market every day to restock their already overloaded freezers and garages.  I don't do conspiracy theories because they're inane in the end and rather pointless.  This, too, shall pass, and it would pass a lot more quickly if everyone would just calm down, just as the swine flu, which was, at this point, much worse, did.

Are you saying that the scam is people are not really panicking?  It is upsetting that they are panicking but I don't understand how it can be a scam.

The youngest person diagnosed with COVID-19 is a newborn baby.

People can't get tested to know what they have and are being misdiagnosed.  Healthy people have died from this or been very sick.  Without proper testing we can't know the exact figures.

You are right, the world is not coming to an end.  Most people are not panicking.

The current state of things in Europe, according to today's Le Parisien.  The hardest hit seem to be popular tourist countries.

I really doubt there are only 47 cases in Russia.

According to Johns Hopkins they have 63 cases, not to say they don't have more they haven't reported.

Yes, I have been shopping.  What I have seen is that people have been calm about it.  I was tempted to buy more TP, and admittedly am concerned it won't be restocked in the stores, but left it for those you need it more than I do.

Don't be naïve.

I'm not denying there is a virus, but I have never seen a widespread panic like we are currently experiencing.

I just got a call from my dad asking if I could come over and help set up his phone.  He is hard of hearing and was able to get a special voice-to-text phone that displays on a screen what callers say to him.  Hopefully, I'll be able to understand the instructions.

Yes DR VIXMOM that is the way it works.....as far as I know it is NOT voice recognition software, but person placing the call will call the service to make the call and then type the words so that it will be transmitted to the receiver on the screen.

BUT - it may have been improved and work in more technical way now.

Decades ago we had the Relay Service....a person wanting to call a deaf person called the Relay Service that then placed a TTY call to the deaf person.....TTY flashes letters on the screen through sounds like a telegraph....but I am assuming that is all obsolete now.

My theory is a few people panicked, then the gougers emptied the shelves forcing everyone else to shop.

I have a tendency to buy in bulk because I have storage space in the basement and I save money that way.   I always buy my TP and paper towels in bulk.  I did buy another 27 package of TP  and  16 rolls  of paper towels but that is my usual monthly  purchase.

I usually buy meat the day I plan to cook it but this time I did buy 3 lbs of ground beef, a roast chicken and chicken apple sausages.

The panic and hysteria here is palpable.  Don't know about anywhere else.  It isn't a question of whether people are being calm, they're panicked and that's why everything is so packed, market-wise and a lot of that panic is directly relatable to Facebook and the media.  You think the same people need to go every day and clean out the shelves?  They are.  I've seen it.  You think people need to have THREE carts filled to the brim?  That is insanity.  It will abate this week, I think, if people will just calm the HELL down.  Nobody's shoving or grabbing, so that's good.  And yes, I'm glad it's finally come to light that some of this or even much of this are these profiteers, who, in my opinion, should all be arrested and fined and what they've been gouging the public with should be taken away from them.

In certain cities they've now closed restaurants.  Good job - what do you think THAT will do to panic shopping - way to shut down the panic by creating more.  And are they limiting the number of shoppers to fifty?  Noooooo.  Thankfully, here the restaurants can stay open and operate at half capacity.

Bruce, I'm glad you had a nice meal with Barry and Cindy.

Major Garcetti is talking about closing all the restaurants. He did say that take-out and delivery would be OK. I realize this is temporary and I understand the reasoning, but to not be able to sit down with friends for a meal--that's horrible!

Not even the governor was shutting restaurants down completely.  I think Garcetti is a complete idiot and is just fueling this crap even more.  Half capacity for most places I frequent would be fifty and that seems to be the magic number.  Guess it's Taco Bell for me, but doing what he just did is now just going to add to the panic and hysteria and now take out food and fast food will all be what markets are.  I wish social media would basically just stop and I do mean STOP.  I'm gonna have to take a Facebook vacation because I cannot stand what's happening there with everyone there.  So, I'll just get updates right here at haineshisway.com

Well, it turns out that this isn't a new phone.  He's had it since late last year, but my sister's boyfriend must've set it up, so I didn't really know about it.  It also has its own built-in answering machine, even though my parents have voice mail through their phone provider (Comcast...they have the phone, Internet, cable bundle).

This phone actually has voice recognition software built in.  It displays what is said by the other person on the line, and also displays voice mail messages.  It turns out that that's what my dad wanted me to look at.
Title: Re: THE NEITHER HERE NOR THERE DAY
Post by: George on March 15, 2020, 10:24:13 PM
The phone was displaying a message that there were unheard voice mail messages and he couldn't quite understand what it meant.  I listened to all 42 of them, and only a few from January were legitimate messages.  Those were actualy duplicates of what my mom remembers listening to from their Comcast voice mail.  The rest were robocalls that hung up after 5 seconds.

I just got a call from my dad asking if I could come over and help set up his phone.  He is hard of hearing and was able to get a special voice-to-text phone that displays on a screen what callers say to him.  Hopefully, I'll be able to understand the instructions.

Have a good rest of the day, all!

I like my iPhone that puts the sound directly into my ears.  Still reading would be easier at times.

Unless the voice recognition software can't understand the person calling.  One displayed voice mail message was almost half [unintelligible].  I couldn't even understand a lot of what the guy was saying!

It's terrible what's been happening.  Fortunately, most people that I've seen in stores have been pretty calm (and I haven't seen anyone with more than one cart), but toilet paper is still gone from every store that I've gone to.

Also fortunately, I have more than enough for myself. :)

Back from a terrific final show - bigger audience today, not huge, but decent.  No one really had to sit near anyone so that was good.  And Doug personally used his own wipes to wipe down every surface in the place, including each and every arm rest.

That's great, BK!  But you'd think that the theater would've been sanitizing all the surfaces instead of Doug having to do it himself.

Um, I thought they could only do takeout after 9:00 tonight.

Thanks to the mayor, that is now the case.  The governor said half-capacity, and that seemed fair.  Garcetti is an idiot and has just made it a certainty that if you thought the panic shopping was bad for the last three days, just wait until tomorrow.  And now fast food places will be jammed with people - why is THAT not being banned - they're small places but as far as I know they'll be open.  Thankfully, I can make pasta all week, I think, although that will become very boring.  I think if I go to Taco Bell at off hours it should be fine.  Same with other fast-food jernts, and one could always order from the car.

Washington is closing bars and restaurants.

What??  ALL bars and restaurants??  I hadn't heard that. :-\

I just found this article:  Restaurants, bars ordered closed temporarily in Washington state over coronavirus concerns (https://www.theolympian.com/news/politics-government/article241220406.html).

I have a question.  Is anyone panic  shopping?

My theory is a few people panicked, then the gougers emptied the shelves forcing everyone else to shop.

Not I.  I have enough TP for me. :)

😊

I have had a few of those.

I wondered about that.  This way he knew it was done correctly.

Wait, fast food restaurants are ok INSIDE!

Actually, I don't know if it's okay to go IN a fast food restaurant, but in reality, if all their doing is take -out it must be?  I guess we'll all find out.  I do know CPK has easy curbside service and I like several things there, so could do that - and I do off hours anyway - I never eat during prime eating hours.

Easy curbside service sounds perfect.

Easy curbside service sounds perfect.

Applebee's has specific parking spots for curbside service.  I've never tried it because I've only ever eaten inside.
