Well, you've read the notes, the notes had an irresistible urge, and now it is time for you to post until the irresistible cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: MESMERIZE!
-
Topic of the Day: I don't love vegetables, but I don't dislike them the way I used to. I'm not one to just eat a vegetable, but I like some salads, and veggies on sandwiches, such as tomatoes, onions, green peppers, lettuce, pickles, corn, garlic, cabbage, carrots, potatoes, cucumber, zucchini...stuff like that.
-
Off to bed.
Have a good day, all!
-
Good morning, all!
-
I think I slept well. I remember much of two dreams. In the first, I was moving and downsizing Toyland from the space we were in on 27th Street to a smaller office down the hall. I was having a particularly difficult time with my former colleague Curtis, who was moving on, to help with the move and dealing with the landlord bringing potential renters in to see the old office space.
-
In the second, I was involved with some Broadway musical and a couple of folk singers - a married couple - whose music I loved were either going to be a featured act or the husband was understudying the lead (this is the vague part). I became aware that the wife of the group was more interested in the young star than her husband.
-
I hope things work out well for your friend, DR JohnG. Her infection and DR TCB's report on his do not make me want to jump into a hip replacement.
-
DR JRand69, the dancer playing the monster in the Frankenstein ballet is Steven McRae, an Australian dancer who's one of the Royal Ballet's biggest stars. He apparently works with a modeling agency and wears very little when he poses for photographers.
-
I checked on Amazon and I was amazed at how many Royal Ballet DVDs I have with him in a leading role.
-
Another really hot day. I think I will stay in, but I do need a trip to my bank this week.
-
Good morning, all.
-
DR George, I hope Neve has a cold and not this herpes virus that's driving Annabelle crazy and working my last nerve.
-
Good morning, all.

I probably like most vegetables (though I say that without looking at a complete list), and I absolutely love some of them.
The exceptions, off the top of my head: Eggplant, as I find the name and the look of the thing unappealing, and the few times I've eaten it (such as in a parmigiana), it's done nothing for me and I only ate it to get through it because there wasn't a better choice. The squash family is okay, but for me, they eventually become kind of "eh".
I love 'em fresh, steamed, you name it. As a side issue, I've also grown to love beans and sprouts more than ever, which I only mention because they can go so beautifully with vegetables. Then again, so does meat...
-
TOD
My favorites are broccoli and cauliflower, steamed with a little butter and also a little lemon on the broccoli, but I also love broccoli in Chinese dishes.
My Appalachian grandmother's fried cabbage was to die for, as were her pickled green beans and corn.
I make great vegetable beef soup with tomatoes, onion, potatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, green beans, corn, celery, peas, and carrots, and my chicken soup always has potatoes, celery, peas, and carrots.
I also love fried onion rings, but they are a hard commodity to find cooked well.
-
And alfalfa and bean sprouts on a fried egg sandwich with a little ranch dressing.
-
Yes, broccoli and cauliflower! So damned satisfying.
All of those things fall in line with my tastes.
As for onion rings, it's nearly impossible to find a place that serves them the "real" way, that I grew up loving, with a real batter and actually deep fried. You can get pretty close to that at places that make an onion "loaf". I never tried making onion rings at home, though.

Here's an interesting double bill, the Mahagonny Songspiel, forerunner of the complete opera, and Poulenc's Les mamelles de Tirésias.

Good morning!

Vibes for Carol the friend of DR JOHN G.

Vibes for kitty Neve.

I think they used to MESMERIZE dress shirts so that they wouldn't shrink in the wash.
-
Thanks DR ELMORE.....I guess if I looked like that, I wouldn't wear many clothes either......

Nice!

I watched Let's Make Waves last night. I like the theme song sung by The Turtles......and I like most of the cast - Robert Webber is sort of a dud for me in anything he does -
But the special effects are pretty bad.....surprising for an MGM film.....
However any movie with Joanna Barnes is okay by me.....Tony Curtis has his moments as well....along with Dave Draper and Sharon Tate.....
-
Our new Conversations With Jack is up! At the end of the interview, during the listing of our donors, I changed the music - just to amuse myself and the Broadway buffs here at HHW. You can certainly move to the end....and sing along.

Tuesday morning greetings! At noon today I have a Google Hangouts book discussion with a group that used to meet in person at the library where my career began.

Webber is very good in 12 Angry Men. But he can fade into the wallpaper.

Carol’s first surgery is happening now.

TOD 1:
Radishes. I used to have my annual radish party on Or around Noche de los Rabanos, Dec. 23. They can be globes, icicles, French breakfast, watermelon radishes, Daikon, black radishes, you name it. They can be raw, pickled, sautéed, even grilled. Just give them to me and keep them coming.
Celery. Raw or pickled, in soups, stocks, stuffing, salads, appetizers.

Dog Chester is not happy today.

Never a fun activity.

TOD 2:
Since COVID-19 came our way, I have been eating far less meat. I have been eating more vegetables and usually what I’ve always eaten: peas (so good with butter and mint from the garden), green beans, cabbage in many ways, onions, red bell peppers and tomatoes (the last two of which are actually fruits). Soups, salads, baked egg dishes and more are among the various ways I’ve used them.
I have cooked two vegetables recently not in my regular rotation and both were excellent.
Leeks were good as a salad, a side fish, in eggs, you name it.
Chayote squash sautéed in butter were almost like pears, sweet, slightly grainy and delicious.
-
String beans, cauliflower, snow peas, carrots, celery, broccoli and broccoli flower, artichokes, artichoke hearts, peas, cabbage, spinach, asparagus, potatoes, lettuce, and Brussels sprouts, if grilled.
-

Oh, my! :D
-
I did not include foods that are called vegetables that really aren't.
-
If only I could easily eat all those vegetables without suffering for it.
-
Damn...he's married with children.

DR George, I hope Neve has a cold and not this herpes virus that's driving Annabelle crazy and working my last nerve.
Thanks, Larry! I hope not, too! She's actually sneezed on my a few times! :o I got a text back from the vet that I e-mailed last night and they said that the earliest they could see Neve is August 21, so I should contact another vet...which is what I'm going to have to do. :P Hopefully, someone will be able to see her!
-
August 21st :o Isn't this your regular vet?
-
Do you know another vet to call?
-
I'm up, I'm up - nine hours of sleep. I awoke after eight hours but fell back asleep for an hour, which was fine.
-
Food will be here at two.

For a day with no plans, it has become such a day. I decided to clean out the file cabinets next to the computer and that turned into a day of more hell than I ever imagined, partly because of two snoopy cats, partly because once I'm on the floor I need a derrick to get me to my feet, and partly because of my fear of poisoning the cats I have a roach problem. The pet-friendly solutions for the most part really suck.
So what I thought was a simple task turned out to involve a bottle of boric acid, an effort to keep the cats out of the poison, the dustbuster, the vacuum cleaner, and the mop. At the height of the madness, the phone rang, and as I struggled to rise off the floor to answer the phone, some delivery man began ringing my door buzzer. I wanted to kill.
-
I just ordered pizza and mozzarella salad for dinner. I don't feel like dealing with the stove tonight.

Eagan's here in Tumwater has the beer batter-type onion rings, which I don't love...they're good, but they're not my favorite. Red Wagon (http://www.redwagonburgers.com/), a local burger joint where I'm going for lunch today, has really good thick-cut onion rings. I think they use panko crumbs and some kind of seasoning in the breading. I really do like these!

Is that anything like Hollanderizing? ;)

Good afternoon.

Sorry to hear about Carol. My goodness. I have never heard of such a thing. Vibes and prayers that her surgery is going well and she has an uneventful recovery.

Those are some cute kids!

August 21st :o Isn't this your regular vet?
Do you know another vet to call?
Yes, and not specifically. The text included a couple of suggestions, so I'll first find out where they are, and then call first whoever is closer. :-\
-
I hope Neve is ok. Hopefully the sneezing will go away before her appointment.
-
Nice new avatar, Laura.

Yes it is.

James Bowen had adopted a kitten he named Jinxie before Bob the Street Cat was hit by a car. Jinxie reminds me of Thatch, and I am very happy James has surrogate for poor Bob.

Just tried to lay out the road trip for tomorrow, and it would not let me add the toll road that takes me around Austin's traffic nightmare. Strange. I saw on the map where I need to go, but still that's strange.
-
I have a lot of packing to do, but it's so hot that I can't really put anything in the car until tomorrow.
-
Pastrami with coleslaw and Russian dressing on rye from Daughter's Deli - superb. No potato pancakes today.

Very odd.

Somehow a fly got in here. It took me twenty minutes to tire it out, it finally landed by the front door. La mouche est morte. Die Fliege ist tot. La mosca è morta. Fluen er død. הזבוב מת.

I would think not. What time do you plan on leaving?

SAFE AND EASY TRAVEL VIBES FOR DR JOHN & JB!
-
BTW, Jane, I can only take a little of Alex Trebek's book at a time.
Thanks. I really don't want to read it. So far I have put it off until October.
-
Hello, everyone.

Does JB know he's going on a trip?
I think so. I have taken his carrier out.

I've been going through another bout with poor sleep. And I'd been doing better! I know that Covid has affected many people's sleep, but I also suspect the heavens.

Coping vibes, too.

My dog used to know when we were about to go for a drive. At first I thought she'd heard my keys or had some other clue. Then I tried not giving anything away--and she still knew.

You know what stands between me and Bruno Walter, iTunes-wise? NOTHING. It's me then Bruno right after. I feel a kinship now, oh, yes, I feel a kinship now.
-
Bruce, I welcome a change in eyewear styles. I never liked the really small glasses and they didn't work well with progressive lenses. Large lenses are particularly helpful with sunglasses, as they offer more protection.
-
You know whose music I discovered thanks to Bruno, even though I have a few pieces by him - Robert Schumann and I really like his music, I must say. Great tunes abound. I like him better than Beethoven and Mozart put together, which, of course, would be Beetmo.
-
I am have to give this Bruno Walter a try. Someone I know keeps talking about him, but I can't recall who.

I'm listening to his fantastic piano quintet with Arthur Rubinstein and the Garneri quartet. Fantastic. I also realize I have it with the Hollywood String Quartet, to I'll listen to that. I only have one of his symphonies at the moment, but that's being rectified, and I have a couple of recordings of his great piano concerto.
-
Well, folks, I've reached the zombie stage and must adios.

Try doing them in children's frames. I finally returned to small adult glasses though they are still difficult to fill the prescription. Fortunately I don't need the reading portion and call almost eliminate it.
-
Until I got contacts I had a second pair of distance only glasses that were larger with clip on sunglasses I wore for walking/hiking.
-
I really miss being able to wear my contacts. Even more I wish my eyes would stop bothering me nonstop.

I love that video! And I didn't realize (actually, I never looked ::) ) that "On 28Dec1986, however, the CBC aired this first rate production (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYNtQVo6Qvg) from Ontario's Stratford Festival." I'll definitely watch that later!
-
I can see that I formerly didn't care for Schumann, but I think that's due to not liking the performances of Paul Paray in too dry a sound. I gather many were not fans of his orchestrations for the symphonies - but there's a newer recording by John Elliot Gardner that apparently is excellent and with a smaller band, the kind that would have performed this when Schumann wrote it, and supposedly this makes the orchestration sound great. There's also a set with orchestrations redone by Mahler - that sounds interesting, too. Interesting life Mr. Schumann had.
-

Yes.
And what little I've heard of Clara Schumann is also beautiful. Sad, sad story. But the music is gorgeous.

I have a copy of that production. Colm Feore is in it. Fun stuff.

In Eric Rohmer's A Tale of Springtime, the young girl (there's always a young girl in Eric Rohmer, I think) is a student pianist who perform several Schumann pieces in the movie. They are exquisite.

George, did you make it through City of Angels? I'm almost done. The lead just sang Funny, which is a great song, and he does such a lousy job with it. Good voice, but he seems to be fighting the melody.
He ain't Gregg Edelman.

Tonight I went to the market and I bought a green zucchini, a yello zucchini, and eggplant
-
I already had a shallot and a bunch of grape tomatoes
-
I cut everything up, threw it in my big heavy covered skillet with some vegetable stock and some Penzeys Sunny Paris seasoning
-
Then I just let it simmer until it seemed done
-
Ate it served over lentil and sweet potato gluten free, vegan pasta
-
It was delicious
-
And somewhere Jane is proud of me
-
Now I'm hungry, but not for vegetables.

I can’t seem to post it here but if anyone cares to look I put the pictures on the book face thingy

'night.

So after work, I called a local 24-hour emergency vet clinic and they said that they don't take appointments...just show up.
-
I got to the vet clinic at about 10:00 and they said that there was probably a 5-6 hour wait! :o
-
Right after I got there, another car pulled up and they said that their dog had porcupine quills in its snout, so obviously, they would get in quickly.
-
But they did say that another 24-hour vet only had a 2-3 hour wait.
-
I drove there (it was actually on the way back to my house) but didn't call them because Neve isn't at death's door, and I wasn't really prepared to wait for even a couple of hours.
-
Instead, I decided to go tomorrow after work and bring my Kindle, and maybe a little litter box because who knows when Neve will have to go. ::)
-
...or me! I'll need to make sure that I go before I have to wait in my car for a few hours. :P
-
Hopefully, it won't be a six hour wait because I got there earlier.
-
Actually, I'll call both places (and maybe look online for another 24-hour vet) and ask what their wait time is, then go to whichever place is shorter.
-
Yeah...that's the ticket. ;)
-
I never heard of a six hour wait.
-
Are you sure you didn’t stop at a Co-Vid 19 testing site?
