Well, you've read the notes, the notes were notes with an N, and now it is time for you to post until the cows with a C come home.
-
And the word of the day is: NEWFANGLED!
-
Sasha seems like a sweetheart.
-
'night
-
Topic of the Day: I've mentioned this before (but not in a while) but I have a set of slides that I bought on eBay. They were taken and sold by Gorman Bechard, and it turns out that Vixmom actually went out with him a few times back in the day.
-
Good night, Jane.
-
Today, the family is going to my sister's to play Scrabble. My mom love the game (and wins more than anyone else in the family), so we'll play that instead of Phase 10, which we played yesterday, anyway.
-
And now, I'm off to bed.
Have a good day, all!
-
I love Scrabble.
-
I love the Sondheim "scrabble" album!
-
DR Ginny, forgot to mention what a hair-raising story you posted yesterday! :P
-
I'm not familiar with Phase 10. Does it require a special deck of cards?
-
The DH and I are going to experiment with Cribbage. Just ordered a Cribbage board online.
-
Thanks for that interesting link on the Cleveland Orchestra, DR ChasSmith. Spent many happy evenings listening to them when I was in college and nearby. At the time, the music director was Christoph von Dohnányi. Which is fun to say.
-
DR Jane, we raised dogs for Guiding Eyes for the Blind (in NY) many years ago. It was so hard to give them up, but oh so rewarding to attend the graduation ceremonies and meet the people "our" dogs had been assigned to!
-
Good morning, all!
-
I would rather be in bed, but three hungry cats put the kibosh on it.
-
This morning I will make a trip to the lobby to pick up yesterday's mail and a few packages. After that I will work on my orchestration. I would like to get 40-50 bars written today, if possible.
-
Last night I watched the 1933 film of Noel Coward's upstairs-downstairs epic play, Cavalcade. I liked much of it but I think I like the play more. The cast, though, is amazing. I've always loved Una O'Connor, from Bride of Frankenstein to Witness for the Prosecution, but her performance as Annie, former maid to the Marryots and later wife of a drunken pub owner and mother of a stage star, is complex and richer than her usual comic cameo appearances.
-
I was careless with my possessions in the 1970s. I had letters from Lotte Lenya and Benjamin Britten that have completely vanished. I think the only collectible item I have today is an original George Gershwin drawing that Leonore Gershwin, Ira's widow, gave me as an opening night gift around 1988.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Richard with an R tends to go on a little too long. And there's so much of him! Those prone to being diabetic had best take BK's observations seriously.
In the scheme of things, I know relatively little of his output. But I'm at the point at which I don't feel the need to know any more. Actually, if truth be told, I was at that point quite a few years ago. And yet, his works and the parts of his works that I love are some of the most magnificent and drop dead gorgeous music I know. Isn't that a fine how-de-do?

Ouch!!!
If I think about it hard enough (and I don't really want to), I'll come up with a couple of painful losses myself. Probably not from anything as remarkable as those letters. But I know the feeling.
Now wouldn't that be the topic: "Irreplaceable Collectibles We Have Lost".
No. Let's not go there.
-
Kitty cleanup is over, and curious Stella has been both loving and irritating this morning. She's so beautiful and affectionate, but her curiosity is working my last nerve this morning.
-
I have a letter from Mr. Sondheim and a letter from Ned Rorem and a letter from Lukas Foss, but that's the extent of it.
-
Back from an extensive grocery run. I only go first thing in the morning or late at night, to avoid as many people as possible.
For breakfast, I will be enjoying my impromptu purchase: pumpkin English muffins, toasted, buttered, and served with a generous slice o' cheese over the top.
-
Oh, I almost forgot - we also have a bit of notation, drawn and signed by Percy Grainger, which was given to us as a gift some years ago.
-
I realize that this "collection" is quite paltry, compared with some of the items bk has accumulated over the years.
-

I'm very fond of R. Strauss' tone poems Don Juan and Tyl Eulenspiegel, but Don Quixote is a little too long for me and Also Sprach Zarathustra is endless, as are too many of his operas.
-
I have never seen a Percy Grainger autograph score, and to my knowledge, I don't think recall seeing much of Grainger's music published.
-
TWO!!
-
I'll see if I can get a photo of it posted here.
-
Good morning, all.
-
In my list of lost collectibles would be my autographs from Lillian Gish and Ella Fitzgerald as well as a letter from Frank Capra.
-
Here he is, boys! Here he is, girls!
-
Most excellent DR singdaw
-
If you're tired of the old fangled get a NEWFANGLED....they are cheap right now!
-
I shall have to see what is not dusty and maybe post a thing or two more.....maybe.

A year ago, I was on the Greek island of Kos, walking around, when I spotted this beautiful bird. I followed him for about a half mile. Got lost. Ended up in the next village over, about eight miles away before I got back to where we were staying.
-
T.O.D.
The problem with this questions is that one person's "weird" is another person's "normal".
-
It worked, DR John G. Amazing!
Although the bird was probably thinking Why is this guy stalking me?
-
And, just for fun:
A picnic table, all of one piece, created from a whole tree.
-
I have a collection of signed lobby cards (Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart, Spencer Tracy, Lana Turner etal.) and posters.
Is that weird?
-
I also have a replica of The Maltese Falcon (I think BK also has one). and a replica of the snow globe from CITIZEN KANE.
-
I also have a dozen signed/numbered Al Hirschfeld prints.
-
And, if anybody who reads this is a dishonest person, I also have a great watch dog who knows the command, "KILL!".
-
The conversation has actually been morphing from “weird stuff” to all manner of collectibles and back again.
-
“weird stuff”
DR TCB's comment from last night has been noted. 8)
-
Stella has decided that if the food is something I like, then she must like it, too. This attitude turns every meal I have into Daddy and The Beggar. Once Annabelle and Thatch have determined something I'm munching on is not in their range of possible snacks, thery stop pestering me. Not Stella.
I worry that at some point she'll eat something that is not good for her, like raisins or onion.
-

That’s right! I wonder how Gorman is doing these days. I know he wrote a couple of books and produced some films. The last time we communicated (by email, we haven’t spoken since 1979 or so) had to have been more then 15 years ago because I know I was still at my first law firm job and the Vixter was little

I have no idea what happened to the letter Katherine Hepburn sent me

Does this work?
It do!
-
DR Jeanne, I still hope for a sherpa. I decided I did not want to go to Staples yesterday and photocopy enough prepared orchestra sheets to write this orchestration, and I wish I had someone to go for me. So, this morning, I have prepared 18 sheets equaling 72 bars of music since I have plenty of pads of the paper I need. I will need, however, to still write in the key signatures on every part on every page now and that's why photocopying a prepared photocopy makes it much easier to just write in the notes.
-
And, just for fun:
A picnic table, all of one piece, created from a whole tree.
That is cool!
-
I will work most of the afternoon on this piece, I'll stop at 3:00 when it's time to feed the babies.
-
Stella has decided that if the food is something I like, then she must like it, too.
Or chocolate.
At any rate, that's what I always heard are the two toxic things for cats (and possibly dogs): onions and chocolate.
I didn't know that about raisins, so thanks for the heads up on that.
-
Nice photo DR JOHN G
I am still thinking about that picnic table.
-
Good morning!
-
Great photo, DR John G!
-
Love the picnic table, DR singdaw!
-
Page 3!

I'm up, I'm up - about five hours of sleep, I think. I forgot I had to buy Bounce so I was at Gelson's already and got the Chicken Caesar for later and two twelve-packs of Diet Coke. The only reason there's a "shortage" is because of hoarders and third-party Amazon sellers who jack the price up triple - Amazon should NOT allow this at all. eBay, too.
-
I have a horrible feeling that things are going to get a lot worse, epidemiological-wise, in the coming months, and that there are going to be a lot more product shortages. Alas.
-
DR elmore3003, I was wondering-
Do you have complete reign on the orchestrations? Is there an unwritten expectation that you will "use" as much of the orchestra as possible?
-
Good morning.
-
That bird looks like a pheasant.
-
TCB, are you and Sasha getting along nicely? Is she a nice cat? She's still pretty young; is she running around playing with everything?
-
That bird looks like a pheasant.
He was/is.
-
I'm an hour into Ran. I love it. King Lear in feudal Japanese society. I like the fact that Kurosawa changed the story from daughters to sons. It actually makes the woman married to the eldest son more hideously evil than Lear's elder daughters.
-
Guess it's time for a light breakfast and then doing whatever until noon.
-
Benjamin Britten
George Gershwin
Lotte Lenya
Three names with the same letter should mean good luck of some sort.
"Lost Letters from Lotte Lenya" sounds like a sad song or a comedy song in the making.
-
Chicken Caesar is also two Cs.
-
DR elmore3003, I was wondering-
Do you have complete reign on the orchestrations? Is there an unwritten expectation that you will "use" as much of the orchestra as possible?
This is for a masked ball fund raiser, I believe, for the Philly Pops, and the orchestration is big band: 5 reeds, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, guitar, piano, bass and drums.
-
It's being modeled after Truman Capote's 1966 back & white ball at the Plaza Hotel.

My brother Randy just called. We have an offer on the Ohio property, and Randy was curious to know if I had the email with the zoning restrictions. The potential buyer wants to put a storage locker building on the property.
I did not have the zoning restrictions, so if Randy cannot find his copy, the realtor says he can get them on Monday.
-
DR singdaw, what is your new avatar?

Hello - happy Saturday. I tried to take a respite from the computer yesterday, so I'm going to go catsup!
-
Fingers crossed that DR elmore's property sells!
-
I'm caught up.
I'm sitting in my classroom, (computer lab) 2 hours early for a Confirmation mass. I guess I didn't read that these 2 confirmation masses were at 12 and 2 and not 10 and 12. I was a bit angry for a bit, now I'm calm. In my classroom, I have things I can do, and I'll just do what I had planned to do this afternoon tomorrow afternoon. I'm over it. I've been on an Aspects of Love kick for the past week. So, I put on Act Two and calming down a bit. I think I'm one of 10 people in my circle of friends that like this show, but it's tied with #1 for my favorite ALW show (tied with Sunset Blvd - it's a really close tie!)
So I'll get some work done whilst I'm here and do my thing at 12:00 and 2:00 - I took some time off tonight and I have someone covering the 5:00pm mass for me. Going to hang out with some friends - social distanced, of course.
-
DR singdaw, what is your new avatar?
Woman with a Parasol, facing left, Claude Monet, 1886
-
I felt there was too much of my face, albeit a younger version, on these here pages.
Do you like my frock?
-
~~~LET'S MAKE A DEAL VIBES~~~ for DR elmore3003 and family!!!!
Back from an ever-so-lovely walk in a park on a crisp, fall day.
And more vibes
-
Ran has reached its end. Very emotional experience. Very violent. Very graphic.
-
Back from some matzoh brei (spell correct made it matzoh brew) and picking up a package. And now, more Strauss and some relaxing.
-
That was a big hit song She Works Hard for the Monet.
Compared to what we could have got when my dumbass brothers screwed up things in 2007, it's a sad letdown.
-
Still, if it gets a $5,000 property tax payment every year off our backs, that's all to the good.
DR Jane, we raised dogs for Guiding Eyes for the Blind (in NY) many years ago. It was so hard to give them up, but oh so rewarding to attend the graduation ceremonies and meet the people "our" dogs had been assigned to!
I walked most mornings with my friend & our dogs, plus I babysat the pups. I would like to have gone to one of the ceremonies. Of course I always heard all about them. My favorite of all the pups was Bree. There was only one failure, a German Sheppard that never stopped chasing her cats.
One day we were watching this crazy puppy at our house when he got his head stuck in the side of a big comfortable chair we had. We had no idea there was room for a head to fit in there ;D Fortunately Keith was home to help me release her. It was always something with this crazy dog.
WOW!
-
Just did an hour's worth of gardening in the 90-degree heat. Not fun. I'm a pool of sweat.
-
But I got a good part of what I needed done.
-
I also have a replica of The Maltese Falcon (I think BK also has one). and a replica of the snow globe from CITIZEN KANE.
We have a replica of the letters of transit from Casablanca.
Letters of transit.
Remember that raisins are just dried grapes, so don't forget about the grapes.
Then there is the sugar substitute Xylitol that has been getting more attention for killing dogs.
Randy just called me back. He found the zoning regulations and sent it to our realtor.
Lighting a candle for property sales!
Thank you!
HUGE VIBES!
-
I received a text to vote for some woman for judge. Never having heard of her I just did a search. I guess they meant to send this to Craig instead of me ;D
-
How were the pumpkin English muffins?
Wonderful!
Mercy! Be careful, DR John G.
Oh, dear. Sorry, DR Jane. I plead old age.
-
They sound good.
-
Ginny?
Oh, dear. Sorry, DR Jane. I plead old age.
LOL. Was it DR Jeanne's hairdresser story?
-
Listening to the R. Strauss violin concerto - I must have heard it before but none of it seems familiar.
-
Was it DR Jeanne's hairdresser story?
'Twas, indeed. I seriously grieve for my old mind.
Do you have the companion piece?
Absolutely.
Five!
Up from a nap. Need to make a Costco run.
-
The Domestic Symphony, which I'm very fond of, is coming to an end and I'm eating my Caesar Salad now and then I'll watch a motion picture.
-
Was it DR Jeanne's hairdresser story?
'Twas, indeed. I seriously grieve for my old mind.
We all do it occasionally.
-
I am more interested in Other People's Monet
-
Well the Memorial turned out to be less of a gathering of old friends and more of a pitch for money - they want $500,000 to make it happen.
My thought is it will be closed within two years.
And all of the people who have been working with him during the last five years had to take the time to give prepared speeches....and almost every one of them pronounced his last name incorrectly.......
It was bad. I think I have whiplash from rolling my eyes. The photo slide show was going when I got there....but it stopped after about a minute.....and then at the end they showed a couple of more minutes of it....DONE.
So that's my opinion of it....which is not important to anyone who was involved.....but they won't see any more of my $$$. My Monet will stay where it is.
-
Saturday evening greetings!
DR Ginny, forgot to mention what a hair-raising story you posted yesterday! :P
Not me, DR Singdaw - I haven’t posted since Wednesday. But I am worried about whoever it was with the hair-raising story...
-
Did some work at the piano, cast another performer for the group number that opens November's show, and have answered a LOT of e-mails.
-
Caesar salad was good and very filling. But definitely in the 1000-calorie ballpark, all in.
I have been occupied the past three days with a virtual card making event put on by one of my favorite companies. Taylored Expressions has done Stamp Joy in person for several years, but this year turned it into a model virtual event. I gave my niece a scholarship as her retirement gift and she and I paid for my sister (niece’s mother) to attend as her birthday present. The sessions were conducted in a private Facebook group and the 3 of us watched and crafted together on Facebook Messenger. My photos are too large to post here, but you can see them on my Facebook page.
-
ACL (Austin City Limits), the huge three-day music fest, is free on YouTube this year, featuring tapes of performances from year's past. It includes the amazing performance by Paul McCartney that I saw a couple of years ago. I may have to look for that tomorrow, if it's not at the same time as Kritzerland.
-
A salad with 1000 calories?
I'm sure it happens. But it never occurred to me that anything could be 1,000 calories and not be required to give up sounding like something healthy.
-
Two Snickers bars would only set you back 560 calories. And you could still have a 440 calorie salad if the Snickers didn't satsfy you.
DR Ginny - did indeed enjoy the pictures you posted on FB.
-
Tonight we saw a Britcom episode in which Patricia Routledge sang. The DH was convinced she was lip-synching. I assured him she was not. He did not know about her singing career.
-
Good night, all.
-
I went to bed an hour ago and read for a while, but sleep apparently has other plans.
-
I believe everyone would like more details about DC Sasha, but so far DR TCB is being circumspect.
-
Cirumspect is the best kind of spect to be.
-
If you must be spect.
-
The ONLY thing in salad that has real calories is the dressing and if chicken the chicken, but in this Caesar there certainly isn't more than three ounces. So, even if you use six hundred calories of dressing, you're fine.
Finished with my viewing and listening to the last of the Strauss CDs.
I love Scrabble.
Today, my mom won the Scrabble game, but I came in second. :)
I love the Sondheim "scrabble" album!
So do I! ;D
-
I'm not familiar with Phase 10. Does it require a special deck of cards?
Yes. You can get them at places like Fred Meyer and Walmart, maybe Target, but certainly online. You need at least two people to play, but I don't recommend any more than six, and even that's pushing it. It just takes longer with more people. Three to five is optimal. :)
I got a Sondheim letter that BK put up as an Indiegogo campaign perk!
-
And after another Indiegogo campaign ended, I was able to purchase the four alternate original cover ideas for Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones' Colette Collage, and one of the four that I now have was actually used for BK's reissue! :D
I didn't know that you could upload personal pics to Amazon!
-
I wanted to post the whole image of Sondheim: A Musical Tribute after Singdaw posted the little version, but the file I found was too big and it couldn't be hot-linked, and when I went to smallerize it, it was too difficult to read. So let's see if THIS works!
Well, it couldn't be hot-linked to imbed the picture here, but click on the link to see the whole picture. :)
I also have a replica of The Maltese Falcon! I actually got it for my dad years ago, and my mom let me have it back a couple of weeks ago.
-
I also have a dozen signed/numbered Al Hirschfeld prints.
That's amazing. I'd love a signed Hirschfeld print.
Stella has decided that if the food is something I like, then she must like it, too. This attitude turns every meal I have into Daddy and The Beggar. Once Annabelle and Thatch have determined something I'm munching on is not in their range of possible snacks, thery stop pestering me. Not Stella.
I worry that at some point she'll eat something that is not good for her, like raisins or onion.
Or chocolate.
At any rate, that's what I always heard are the two toxic things for cats (and possibly dogs): onions and chocolate.
I didn't know that about raisins, so thanks for the heads up on that.
And Paws Off Xylitol; It's Dangerous for Dogs (https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/paws-xylitol-its-dangerous-dogs)! :o
This sugar substitute, found in some human foods and dental products, can be poisonous to your dog.
And lower in the article is says this:
A note to cat and ferret owners: Xylitol does not seem to be as dangerous for cats and other pets. Cats appear to be spared, at least in part, by their disdain for sweets. Ferret owners, however, should be careful, as ferrets have been known to develop low blood sugar and seizures, like dogs, after eating products containing xylitol.
My brother Randy just called. We have an offer on the Ohio property, and Randy was curious to know if I had the email with the zoning restrictions. The potential buyer wants to put a storage locker building on the property.
I did not have the zoning restrictions, so if Randy cannot find his copy, the realtor says he can get them on Monday.
Finally!! :D
I went to bed an hour ago and read for a while, but sleep apparently has other plans.
Sorry.
I'm caught up.
I'm sitting in my classroom, (computer lab) 2 hours early for a Confirmation mass. I guess I didn't read that these 2 confirmation masses were at 12 and 2 and not 10 and 12. I was a bit angry for a bit, now I'm calm. In my classroom, I have things I can do, and I'll just do what I had planned to do this afternoon tomorrow afternoon. I'm over it. I've been on an Aspects of Love kick for the past week. So, I put on Act Two and calming down a bit. I think I'm one of 10 people in my circle of friends that like this show, but it's tied with #1 for my favorite ALW show (tied with Sunset Blvd - it's a really close tie!)
Matthew (and anyone else interested), did you know that ALW started to write a version of Aspects of Love in the early 1980s with Tim Rice? When that didn't happen, Trevor Nunn wrote some lyrics, and a couple of YouTube videos are out there:
"I Don't Talk to Strangers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8VY9siMTSI)," with lyrics by Tim Rice (this was an actual released recording)
"Married Man (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1RQr7BZCSA)," with Trevor Nunn lyrics, performed live on The Merv Griffin Show
When THAT didn't happen, most of the music went into the version of The Phantom of the Opera that everyone now knows (plus a little Fanciulla del West. ;) )
Well the Memorial turned out to be less of a gathering of old friends and more of a pitch for money - they want $500,000 to make it happen.
My thought is it will be closed within two years.
And all of the people who have been working with him during the last five years had to take the time to give prepared speeches....and almost every one of them pronounced his last name incorrectly.......
It was bad. I think I have whiplash from rolling my eyes. The photo slide show was going when I got there....but it stopped after about a minute.....and then at the end they showed a couple of more minutes of it....DONE.
So that's my opinion of it....which is not important to anyone who was involved.....but they won't see any more of my $$$. My Monet will stay where it is.
Oh, no! That's terrible! :-\
Hi George.
-
Thanks George.
-
I am going to read now.
Tonight we saw a Britcom episode in which Patricia Routledge sang. The DH was convinced she was lip-synching. I assured him she was not. He did not know about her singing career.
I love her version of When Frederic Was A Little Lad (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4r0N5UlXUI), and especially Not On Your Nellie! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOzkqKSGauI) from Darling Of The Day. :D
I am going to read now.
Good night, Jane. Enjoy your book.
Cirumspect is the best kind of spect to be.
Circumspect? Do I look Jewish?
-
I believe everyone would like more details about DC Sasha, but so far DR TCB is being circumspect.
What details would you like? She was a stray that was brought to Animal Rescue, because they are the largest no-kill shelter in Washington. She was already fixed when she was found. The first place that found her named her Sasha. I like the name, so I guess I will keep it.
I love Scrabble.
Today, my mom won the Scrabble game, but I came in second. :)
Were you the only two playing?
