Well, you've read the notes, the notes did an interpretive dance to the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the interpretive dancing cows come home.

And the word of the day is: EXULT!

One of the best fringe benefits of HHW membership is learning about all sorts of intriguing films, books, and music that I otherwise might not know about. Thank you to everyone for sharing your interests.

TOD: Many people don't know that Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's song, "The Music of the Night," was originally written about someone who ate Mexican beans for dinner.
-
Good morning, all!

DR George, yes, I have AC, but it costs money to run it. There's no reason - beyond the fact that a truly neurotic woman has complained incessantly about being cold to City Housing Authority - for this building to be pumping out heat all day yesterday. Last night, when the heat was off, temperatures went down to the low 40s and it was great for sleeping.
-
DR Laura, I always forget about Kitten Academy.
-
This morning I must step out and do some banking. I have no urge to do this.

This BBC Diary of Anne Frank is not the play. I watched the first hour of it. The series begins in the Frank's affluent Amsterdam home as plans are laid and she is given the diary. The first episode ends with the Van Daan's moving into the annex and the second ends with the arrival of Dr Dussel. The screenplay and cast are quite good, and Mrs Van Daan is thoroughly obnoxious. I had forgotten that Peter Van Daan brought his cat along. My only complaint is that much of the picture is very dark, most likely to convey the limited lighting in the annex.
I'll finish it tonight.
-
In the late 1980s, Michael Tilson Thomas gave me as a thank you gift the complete revised critical edition of the Anne Frank diary. I need to dig it out. I had read the original published version when I was in high school.
-
Good morning, all.
-
I am not ready for my interpretive dance, Miss de Mille.
-
Anne Frank was a high school read for me, too. This is making me want to read it now as an adult, and that BBC production sounds intriguing.
-
I am not ready for my interpretive dance, Miss de Mille.
But when y'ARE, Blanche, we need the video. :)

And the word of the day is: EXULT!
I hope to do this on November 4th.

I have too many wonderful Mexican meals under my belt — uh, literally — to remember. Some were certainly at nice places where I was very glad that someone else was picking up the tab. But most were at more typical jernts, and some of the most delicious were at mom and pop places.
Just to pick something almost at random from that great middle ground in L.A., a meal at Antonio’s on Melrose in the 1980s would be heaven right about now.
Many of the places I loved, great and small, are ones whose names I have forgotten.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Home specialties are guacamole (which as it happens I must make today because we have several avocados that are ready) and quesadillas. Tacos, too, but I never quite make them to my satisfaction as far as competently building either hard or soft ones, a technique yet to be mastered.
Note to self: there’s also a chicken in the fridge to be scavenged for good quesadilla and/or taco meat.
-
TOD:
Mostly I make tacos but I am not sure that you could call them Mexican......
I eat at Taco Bell now and then.....but I'm not sure that meets the criteria either.
-
Thirty degrees this morning but today will be the coldest day of the week.
Pleasant weather tomorrow for election day......
-
We were not informed of specific re-recordings last night. They will let us know as the week goes on.....time will tell.
-
Good morning!

TOD:
I love Mexican food more and more as time passes. I have cooked it, but I prefer eating it out. Let somebody else do all the work. I don’t need to roast tomatoes and chiles just to make salsa. I don’t need to boil a chicken, shred it and then wrap it in a fried corn tortilla in order to make enchiladas and then make the rice, the beans, the guacamole, etc. It’s all too much for one.
I have made tamales (a family effort), corn tortillas (hours of practice), salsa, flan, chili sauces, breakfast dishes and a few others. I’ve done prep work assembling enchiladas. My favorites, though, are making main courses like shrimp or fish a la Veracruzana, using butter, capers, tomatoes and green olives in the sauce.
-
I may have to get some takeout tonight.
-
Good morning.
-
TOD: Mostly we go to a small family-run Mexican place for fry bread tacos. The family is very nice, and we try to support them through this pandemic. We don't go out anywhere very often, though, so I don't suppose we're doing much good.
My neighbors make tamales and sometimes bring me some. You need a real abuela to make good tamales.

I have run my errands and survived. My first taxi driver never even started the meter for the four-block ride, and so I get a free ride to the bank. It was really kind of him. I posted my bills, took care of part of my banking; the office I needed to get some money from my IRA was not open, so that was a dud. The taxi driver back was really kind and helpful with my walker, and then - surprise of surprises! - when I got to the front door of the building, the Man with the Bike kindly held the door for me.
-
During my BK recording days in the 1990s, there was a wonderful Mexican place called Rosa's at 48th Street and Eighth Avenue. I really miss it, but I'm very fond of La Cucina, which is where DRs Ginny, ChasSmith, vixmom, and others went after Desperate Measures. I still mourn Cafe Frida, which had the absolute best guacamole.

You have a wonderful selection of Mexican restaurants there. I especially enjoyed the restaurant were we had dinner with you.
I don't normally enjoy Mexican food for breakfast. I have no idea which restaurant we found on the Riverfront we enjoyed, and it was the best Mexican breakfast I have had.

I recall my shock at finding out people think Taco Bell is Mexican food.

Thanks for the info, Larry. I guess I'm just not used to the idea of the temperature being controlled for an entire building, and not each apartment having its own controls.

As much as I like Taco Bell, I would NEVER call it Mexican food. Mexican inspired, or Mexican adjacent...but not "Mexican." ;)
-
Otherwise, I like tacos, enchiladas, tostadas, etc.
-
I've liked most of the burritos that I've gotten. There are few places around here that are good enough for me. In downtown Olympia, there's a place called Quality Burrito and they have ALL kinds of burritos, and I'm sure that none of them are any kind of traditional Mexican, but they're good. :)
-
I don't normally enjoy Mexican food for breakfast. I have no idea which restaurant we found on the Riverfront we enjoyed, and it was the best Mexican breakfast I have had.
My Birding Buddy and I stopped at a little hole-in-the-wall place in Payson and had chilaquiles -- a typical Mexican breakfast food. The next month the place burned down.
Luckily, they found a new place to reopen, and the town seems to be very supportive of them. I always stop to get something when I go through town.

The restaurant we ate at, La Fonda on Main, is a favorite. There are three La Fondas in town, each independent of the others.
-
I love a really good Mexican breakfast, but that makes me hard to please. I don’t want to be carb’d to death with potatoes and flour tortillas and Texas toast and a pancake. My favorite is a breakfast relleno in which the poblano pepper is stuffed with scrambled eggs before being battered and baked.
-
And I’ll take a pork chop taco any time of day.

Don’t have to ask me twice.

That is a nice story about the town.

Good Afternoon - I'm a little off today. Don't know why. But every darn thing is getting on my nerves. I'm looking forward to going home soon. Maybe a bike ride, maybe a nap - I don't know yet. Although, it's nice to have more kids on campus today.
-
I'm up, I'm up - seven-and-a-half hours of sleep - up at eleven and right to the bank, who, much to my chagrin JUST changed its policy about the way I cash personal checks and deposit into the business account. Now, there's a day wait, which I'm not having. I was on the verge of getting belligerent but it wasn't the teller's fault and she felt bad about it and said it's affecting everyone, including employees. So, I drove to the bank on which the check was drawn in Studio City to find "branch closed" - I know they reopened three months ago, so I then had to drive back to Sherman Oaks and go to THAT branch, cash the check (no one in line, thankfully), go back to my bank and deposit. They told me Studio City closed for some repairs to their lighting system. So, what should have taken ten minutes took an hour and fifteen minutes.
-
Calming vibes for DR Matthew, and for all of us.
-
Studio City closed for some repairs to their lighting system.
Because everyone in Studio City deserves to look their best.
-
And, as we all know, indirect lighting is the hallmark of a civilized society.
-
Couldn't bear the thought of making food here again, so tried a new place next to the mail place. It's only been there for about six years and I've never gone in because I hate when any pizza place is called "wood fire". But it got good notices on Yelp so... Had one slice of pepperoni pizza and a sub of ham, salami, pepperoni, tomato, lettuce, and Eyetalian dressing. The slice was very good and the sandwich, which was the size of a "regular" Subway, was great.

Hello, everyone.
-
I suspect something is amiss in the heavens today.
-
I suspect something is amiss in the heavens today.
I would second that. A friend asked I were still in pain. I said I was too stressed to be in pain.
-
Last summer I received an email from Cedars-Sinai asking if I want to do an at-home FIT test. Yes. I'm a fan of at-home tests and the FIT test can catch colon cancer in its early stages. I requested a test kit, but never received it. I emailed to submit a second request, but received no reply and no test kit. This is so typical of Cedars (and others). Last week I received an email from United Healthcare, telling me to be sure to send in the FIT test. This FIT test would have come directly from them, but I've received nothing from them, nor did I know they were sending them out. I called to request one. Usually the UHC people are very competent and helpful, but this person was difficult to understand and hadn't a clue what a FIT test was. I had been told to stay on the line to take a survey, but no survey came on, so I couldn't even complain about her.
The moral of this story (take your pick):
It's very difficult to obtain health care during Covid.
The gods are angry.
Most large medical groups are incompetent when it comes to admin.
Some things are not meant to be.

Started watching Simon Callow’s Being Shakespeare on The Shows Must Go On/YouTube. It’s on for two days.

You can't be both?

I’m sure you can. But I was too stressed to notice.

I grew up eating a lot of Mexican food and still enjoy it. My mother was not a particularly good cook, but she learned how to make tacos and they were a favorite. In those days supermarkets didn't sell tortillas. We would drive to a little place on Sawtelle, just south of Santa Monica Blvd, where they made fresh corn tortillas. I was always fascinated as the tortillas made their way on the big tortilla machine. Thinking back on it now I don't see why they needed a big machine, but that's how they did things. The tortillas were still warm and quite delicious.
-
Monday evening greetings!
I am back and can now tell you what Richard and I did over the weekend. On Friday we drove to my niece Laura’s home in Normal, Illinois, to avoid having to stay in a hotel for the “main event” taking place Sunday in Wheaton, Illinois - Charlotte Berenice’s baptism.
-
Stress begone vibes to John G and the rest of us!
-
I tried making tortillas at home many years ago, but there is indeed an art to it. I didn't stick with it long enough to learn it.
-
I used to make Mexican food at home. I'd put a frozen Amy's enchilada dinner into the oven.
-
We couldn’t stay at Rob and Mary Linda’s because they were at capacity with the other grandparents, an aunt, and a great grandmother. Another set of great grandparents stayed with friends nearby. Even though it was a 2-hour drive each way, staying with my niece worked well for us.
-
I LOVE cheese enchiladas with green sauce. I had to stop eating it, though, because cheese aggravates my allergies. So these days I stick to veggie tacos without the cheese.
-
The baptism service, which followed strict health protocols, was at 4pm, preceded by brunch at Rob and Mary Linda’s, which also followed somewhat strict health protocols. We drove up yesterday morning and left as soon as the service concluded. We spent last night at Laura’s and had a smooth trip home today.
It was a giant leap for us, appreciated by Charlotte’s parents, but we’re glad to be back in our quarantine bubble and looking forward to visiting next month when it’s just us.
-
I agree with John G about not having to buy all the ingredients and doing all the cooking. I like to go out for Mexican food, even if it's just take-out. I also like to support the little mom-and-pop Mexican restaurant that I go to. (The owners are Armenian, BTW.) I went there today, in fact.
-
So glad you had a good trip, DR Ginny, and were able to participate in this milestone family event.
-
I'm on tenterhooks about this damn election.
I don't know what tenterhooks are, exactly, but I'm on 'em.

~~~CONTINUING MEDICAL VIBES~~~ for DR John G. and for DR Jeanne.
Thanks, Sing. My frustration with the system is nothing compared to what you've just been through.
Vibes for your continued improvement.
-
I will be VERY glad when the election is over, the votes counted, and a winner declared. I hope to God things stay relatively calm.
-
Vibes for CALM and coping to all.
And the ads stop, and the ugly signs come down ...
Thank you, DRs Singdaw and Jeanne!
There have been quite a lot of branch closings--BofA, Wells Fargo, US Bank. Usually no notice given, nor explanation, nor date of reopening. It's very inconvenient. I wonder if the branch managers were having a meltdown and just decided to not open that day.
I'm glad you got to go, Ginny. If you are like me, you'll be nervous for the next 14 days.
Spent most of the day getting everything ready for the new release announcement at midnight tomorrow night. I'm hoping if people are happy, they'll purchase, and if people are angry, they'll purchase just as a way to relieve the angry :)
Spinach enchiladas with the green sauce, yum.
Aside from the delicious ones I had with DR John, I had excellent ones in Albuquerque at the restaurant in our hotel.
We had originally walked over to the, supposedly, best Mexican restaurant in town. It my have been, however, it a quick eat place with no atmosphere. We wanted to relax with drinks, plus I don't think they had anything vegetarian. After a walk around town we headed back to the hotel restaurant and were pleasantly surprised.
Yes, stay well vibes for DR Ginny.
-
I have noticed, with the numbers going up across the country, more people wearing masks just to go for walks.
-
There was a Mexican restaurant when we lived in Tiburon that was exceptional. I don't recall what area in Mexico the owners were from. There wasn't anything except for guacamole we would call traditional on the menu.
-
Then there was that little Restaurant on Pico Blvd that had the tacos Bruce and I loved.
A friend of mine posted that she tried to clean behind the refrigerator today, and managed to damage the electrical cord. Now it doesn't work.
What a hassle!
My takeaway from this episode is: NEVER EVER try to clean behind the fridge!
I'm home - ordered food because I didn't want to cook - and still have work to do. Today was not good. Tomorrow will be better.... well, maybe not.
It's a clip-fest of political skits that they've done this year.
Hey Ginny, I am all for saving a couple of bucks as much as the next guy, but to drive all the way to Arizona just so Laura would put you up for the night, seems pretty extreme.
It is illegal in Washington not to remove all of your signs in a certain amount of time. The candidate can receive a stiff fine.
Hi, Tom.
-
Thanks TCB, I am glad to know this.
You can call and report candidates that don’t comply.
-
And the ads stop, and the ugly signs come down ...
I expect the ads will stop faster than it takes to remove the signs. I hate when people don't take the signs down after the election.
It is illegal in Washington not to remove all of your signs in a certain amount of time. The candidate can receive a stiff fine.
I didn't know that! :-\ Not that I have sign anywhere.
Hello, George.
-
First returns are in from New Hampshire:
Biden. 5
Trump. 0
Are they supposed to collect all signs even ones they didn't put out?
-
Political signs must be removed in ten days. I don’t know who actually enforces the law.
That's so cool!
Apparently, this only applies to public lands. So, if the jerk across the street has a giant TRUMP sign in his front yard, he can keep it up as long as he wishes.
-
Cher is on A Late Show with Stephen Colbert right now. :)
-
Pete Buttigieg is going to be on A Late Late Show with James Corden right after Stephen Colbert.
-
I can no longer wait for BK’s notes. Good night.
Those should also have a time limit.
I would think that keeping up the signs on a person's own yard for as long as they wanted would probably fall under free speech, so they probably wouldn't restrict that any. Just my 2¢.
Quite a light day of postings.
-
Quite.
But everyone has left the room, so I'll post the new topic.
