Well, you've read the notes, the notes were ejected, and now it is time for you to post until the ejected cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: PREPOSSESSING!
-
Topic of the Day: I must confess that I don't know much of Copland's work, but I do know and really like "Hoedown" and "Fanfare for the Common Man."
-
Have a good day, all!
-
Good morning, all!
-
I slept rather well last night, Annabelle under the blankets to my left, Stella to my right, and Thatch at my feet. My apartment has been so warm that I decided to turn off the radiator, and I'm much happier sleeping in a chilly room under a pile of warm blankets.

This is another Oh, Boy! day. Next week must be devoted to the IRS.

BK, as far as I'm concerned, Maria Callas owns the role of Tosca. Of her two commercial recordings, I prefer the first from La Scala.
When she last sang Tosca at Covent Garden in 1964, Act Two - why not the entire damned production? - was filmed. It's quite wonderful.

What is this last night about DR George streaking?
-
Good morning, everyone.
-
I would like to see the Carmen with Garanca. I saw her as Rossini's Cinderella in La Cenerentola, and I, too, think she's wonderful. I think Alagna as Don Jose is too old; he should be a young mama's boy whose sexual addiction leads to dumping the girl his mother wants him to marry for a criminal gypsy as his life spirals from soldier to smuggler and ultimately murderer.
I think the most wonderful thing about Bizet's score is that the first act and the first half of Act Two are like a saucy operetta with a lot of humor and a rather light touch. And then it gets darker and darker. Act Three is tough as edges fray, and Act Four is a dance of death during a festive day.
-
I really love Copland's opera, The Tender Land, and sang the role of "Top" in the 30th anniversary production of the final revised version. The director decided that the character was so named because he was a ginger, so I had to dye my hair red for the production. Such gorgeous music, from near the end of his "Americana" period, but still in that vein. Copland conducted a concert version with the New York Philharmonic, excerpts of which were eventually released on CD. Philip Brunelle led the first full recording on Virgin Classics.
I also saw the production at Long Wharf in New Haven in 1987 about 5 times, where with the composer's agreement the orchestration was reduced to 13 instruments, similar to the reduced version of Appalachian Spring. This version was also released on CD.

I loved the Bert Parks game show, of which I have no memory of ever watching as a kid. It sadly shows how far education has fallen in this country.

The Long Wharf production was conducted by a rather arrogant conductor I once worked with, Sidlion, maybe? I do not remember his first name.
I like a lot of Copland, but I don't care for The Tender Land and I should give it another chance. I don't detest it the way I do Barber's Vanessa.
-
Murry Sidlin. Sad to hear that he was such a jerk.
-
The opera's main problem is that it was conceived for the intimate medium of television (for NBC's Television Opera Workshop, but rejected and never produced), and it pales a bit on the grander medium of the stage.
-
Murry Sidlin. Sad to hear that he was such a jerk.
It's weird. Two of the absolute best conductors I ever worked with were Michael Tilson Thomas, who affectionately called me Lorenzo, and John deMain, the best Porgy & Bess maestro since probably Alexander Smallens. Two of my least wonderful experiences/encounters were with these arrogant second or third tier wannabes.
-
This just made me laugh, even if the subjunctive is incorrect.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Well, it sounds like I need to see and hear this Garanca Carmen one of these days
-
Good morning, all.
-
I loved L’Amico Fritz when I saw it at Sarasota Opera. I think I have a fun recording with Pavarotti. Haven’t listened to it in ages. Need to rectify that.
-
I wonder if we’re going to get rain. It’s very cloudy out there.
-
BK, doesn't that Carmen have chapter stops for effortlessly skipping the intermission features? If not, it certainly should.
I have a real thing about this, whether it be operas or movies or TV shows on disc. Too many disc publishers hold back on the chapter stops like they were made of gold. Because God forbid we should be able to easily navigate back and forth between logical starting points. You know, like we used to do when these shiny round things were the latest rage. And, you know, like Kritzerland just did on a very popular release. :)
-
No rain forecast, but no sun until 11 or so. If the weather app is to be believed. Next week, we have a few freezing nights. Need to think about some of the plants.
-
I just got my appointment for next week's MRI.
-
Thursday!

I shall have to explore this Cd The Tender Land and imagine DR singdaw as a redhead.
TOD:
Hoedown - DR ELMORE posted a wonderful video of this last week or so.
Appalachian Spring
Rodeo
The Heiress - film score

MR BK writing about his ASCAP additions reminds me of the time on TO TELL THE TRUTH, three gentlemen were all pretending to be a composer.
Polly Bergen asked one what his ASCAP rating was and he didn't know what she was talking about.....she asked the next one, and he didn't know either.....she asked the third and he replied: "Somewhere between Elvis Presley and Irving Berlin....."

Last night I watched another random game show.....Sense and Nonsense.....a Dumont abomination that featured teams of children playing for Coca Cola dollars. It was the February 19, 1954 episode.
One of the challengers for the Brooklyn Museum was a boy named Leonard Frey. I thought the name was a coincidence until he started to speak....it was indeed Leonard Frey later of many musicals.

The Northwest Angle of Minnesota is cut off from the United States, surrounded mostly by Lake of the Woods and separate from the rest of the state. The only way to get there by land is through Canada -- but the border is closed, cutting the town off from the thousands of tourists who flock there for world-class fishing every winter.
With things getting desperate, a bold move was made to plow a 30-mile ice road across the lake, giving tourism and commerce a route to the resorts. The road includes more than 22 miles across the frozen lake where the ice is about 2 feet thick.

I could use me some Coca Cola Bucks!

I could use some Starbucks.

Even if it’s just decaf.

I love the Copland music used in He Got Game.
-
Good Morning
TOD - the only 2 pieces by Copland that I know are "Ching a Ring Chaw" and "Stomp Your Foot" which I sang several times in choirs in my younger days. Both remain favorite pieces of mine
-
Today is callbacks for Shrek - online, of course. I'm kind of excited about the show. I really like the score, but I don't like the lyrics.
Today is 38 years ago that Karen Carpenter left us. Never a day goes by that I don't listen to a Carpenters song.

Wow! I hope all those tourist don't take the virus with them.

At 11am, the clouds departed and there is sun. Today is the day it’s supposed to hit 82. Tomorrow’s high: 59.

Very interesting, DR singdaw. I happen to be fascinated with state boundaries and "how they got that way" -- which I vaguely recall was the name of a TV documentary series or some such which I always meant to get into. I must seek it out. Some boundaries, like that MN one, are absolutely bizarre. I hope there's a good story behind it.

And I never fail to be amazed that you can even have such a thing as an ice road, like in Alaska with the heaviest trucks anywhere going over them. Me, I'll take the ass-fault.

Oh, my goodness! I can't imagine having to drive over that!

I could use some Starbucks.
I just remembered that I have a Starbuck's gift card that I haven't used yet. Good thing they don't expire. :)

I have Shake Shack, Target, and Trader Joe's cards that are all over at least one year old, each, and thank goodness those don't expire either.

I am with you Chas. In Michigan I ice skated on a pond but would not go on the lake.

Thursday afternoon greetings! We picked up groceries and a prescription at Kroger early this afternoon and I've been puttering at my desk for a while.

No, thank you.

Exactly ;D

Of course I meant Leonard Frey.

Rainy this afternoon turning to snow after dark.....and lots of rain this weekend.....what isn't snow, that is....

A couple of basketball games I am interested in tonight.
And of course also Hell's Kitchen.
I spent some time on the telephone with Comcast - first with a robot technician.....of course what it did was not successful. So I got a text to ask if I wanted to get a call. I answered "Y E S".
Sierra called and did some more work which didn't help. So she said she would put in a ticket and they would continue to work on their end......so far still no ONDemand service.

I ate a banana.

I ate a banana.
I am choosing that for my epitaph. With your permission.

No, thank you.
I'm with you, DRs Ginny and Jane! :P

THREE!

Picked up a couple of packages, went to Gelson's and got burgers and buns for food, came home, made two burgers and ate them and they were really good, and am now listening to another excellent Mascagni opera called Iris. It's amazing that everyone thinks of this guy as a one-opera composer.

Before Craig could get vaccinated through the program set up for teachers in his district, they cancelled it due to lack of vaccines. :(
-
DR Matthew I hope you find someplace to get vaccinated. I believe teachers should be vaccinated if they are back in the classroom.

Hello, everyone.
-
Yesterday I saw my osteopath, who is also my PCP. I booked it a month or two ago as a routine appointment, but I woke up last Monday morning with hives. I've been treating them homeopathically with very good success, but was still pleased to see the doctor in case I'd missed something. No, he confirmed that they were hives and approved of what I was doing. He said they can take as long as two weeks to go away. God, I hope not! They're itchy and most annoying! Given the progress I've made so far, I don't expect it to be that long.
-
Jane, regarding the unmasked taxi driver, I as told when I scheduled the ride that the driver would be wearing a mask. I was also told that I could request that he disinfect the vehicle. I requested, but had my doubts that this would take place. One of the most annoying aspects was that this was purportedly a medical transportation company, and those words were in the company name. In reality, all they do is contract with a local taxi firm. There is nothing medical about it. It galls me how they deliberately mislead people.
It's difficult to complain because my medical transportation benefit, which pays for it, is so mired in bureaucracy. I do know that United Healthcare has changed to a different agency to arrange transportation. I haven't used them yet, but truly hope that they do more than read from a script.
-
I am sorry, DR Jeanne.
-
Perhaps someone needs to design a capsule to keep you safe while using public transportation.
Seriously, lots of new studies have been conducted because of Covid. If we have to go through something like this again we will be better prepared.
-
I am sorry, DR Jeanne.
Thanks, Sing. Given all that is going on I'll gladly take the hives. But I'll also try to get rid of them ASAP. I'm very glad I could see my doctor so soon.
-
We just discovered fresh water on out bathroom floor. So, another maintenance report filed with building management.
I'm tempted to try DR elmore3003's friend's tactic: threaten to take a water sample to the Department of Health.
-
A question for DRs at large:
What do you feel comfortable with these days?
Indoor dining in a restaurant?
Outdoor dining at a restaurant?
Public transportation?
Crowded spaces? (theatre, concerts, etc)
Having cleaning help, plumbers, etc?
In cars with others?
-
We are not comfortable leaving our apartment, frankly. We both have comorbidities, that, should we contract the virus, we would likely not fare very well.

I hope not. I go batty when I have a rash, etc. Best to confirm it isn't a symptom of covid as some rashes are.

This is just very wrong. Good luck with the new agency.

DR Chas maybe you should take a water sample considering you have too much of it.

So sorry this problem continues. I don't know that you need a sample. Just a statement of how many times it's happened and is not yet corrected might be enough. But if you pull in the Health Dept it could become uncomfortable to remain there as tenants.

We have not done any of these. Plumbers, etc fortunately have not been needed. We do go to a market at least once a week. Do I feel comfortable, no but we wear our KF94 masks & most people wear masks.

Thanks to Jane and Singdaw for your feedback.

TTFN.

None of the above. I made an eye-doctor's appointment today. I know they will have to do something involving touching my eyes (I refuse to do the air gun) and I am already dreading having to go.

Saw a page for a Valentine's Day contest today. The main prize was travel, which, well, who in their right mind would want to win right now?
But the kicker was the tagline that said it was for you and "a loved one worth up to $5,000."
I don't know, if I would think my one true love would be worth much more than that.
-
After all, who can put a price on love?
OK, those people walking around that corner downtown, maybe. And it probably doesn't cost $5,000. But is it true?
As that wise man, Cole Porter, once wrote, old love, new love, any love but true love.

Off to read.

But first ...

I just cancelled a scheduled dental cleaning today.

Fred Meyer here seems ok now. Initially we switched to Safeway which was much safer. Almost every market we shop at, except Trader Joe's, there are mask rule breakers. Since the pandemic we are shopping at other locations far more than we used to.
I prefer our local pharmacy section to others, and the store is walking distance if we want.

I shouldn't have postponed my appointment but I just hate them touching my eyes right now. I will book something in March. I probably should get a second opinion of an ophthalmologist.

Before the curtailing of indoor dining, the restaurants that I had gone to seemed to have sufficiently handled their indoor dining distancing.

Hi, Tom.
-
When I came home tonight after shopping with my sister, I found a package in my mailbox!
-
The plumbers that came here on Wednesday were very careful.
-
I would not have invited them in, if I didn’t have a sink full of dirty water.

And.......... it contained?
-
Hello, George.
-
When I came home tonight after shopping with my sister, I found a package in my mailbox!
And.......... it contained?
It was from England, and it contained the new "DigiMIX" release of the original 1954 cast recording of The Boy Friend in a 2-fer disc with the 1984 London revival cast recording.
-
This just made me laugh, even if the subjunctive is incorrect.
You have now been kicked off HHW for 30 days!!
-
Jay Records was (are) having a sale (https://www.jayrecords.com/recording/all-three-boyfriends-offer/) for the 2-fer and the 1967 London cast recording.
-
:D :D :D
-
So you now have three more versions of THE BOYFRIEND.
-
Good night, George.
-
So you now have three more versions of THE BOYFRIEND.
Well, two. I had the 1984 revival, but that was one of my stolen CDs, so it's actually a replacement. But the other two are new to me. :)
-
Good night, Tom.
-
These "digi" mix things are hilarious. Anything to make a buck for old Yappers.
