Title: OPERA FOR DUMMIES
Post by: bk on February 05, 2021, 12:06:34 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were notes for dummies, and now it is time for you to post until the dummy cows come home.

BK, I haven't mentioned it, but I really enjoy your comments on opera in the notes.  I'm happy you enjoyed Prince Igor; I'm amazed I missed it when I was raving about Prokofiev, Shostakovich, and Mussorgsky.  I think you'd really like Glinka's overture to Ruslan and Ludmilla but I think the opera was written in an earlier style than you would like.

BK, since you are fond of Street Scene, as am I, I think you might like Johann Strauss, Jr's Der Zigeunerbaron (The Gypsy Baron), which was based on a romantic Hungarian novel.  It's a heavier work than Strauss' popular Die Fledermaus, and Strauss' writing is more ambitious. Because there's so much music, early "complete" recordings had to cut numbers to fir the work onto two LPs.  Some cuts, like Mirabella's Act One story of her adventures, the Act Two Morals Commission waltz, and Arsena's Act Three ditty, might be traditional performance cuts, but some were because of length.  My favorite recording is Harnoncourt's, which is not only complete but attempts to reconstruct Strauss; ambitious Act Two finale.  I believe the original full score for the piece was destroyed in the bombing of Dresden, and the New Johann Strauss edition in Vienna, edited by Michael Rot, attempts a similar reconstruction.

Broadway's Franz Allers recorded for Angel/EMI several German operettas.  His recording follows the standard cuts EMI established with their monaural recording with Schwarzkopf.  It's not bad, and the voices are good casting. Boskovsky's later recording for EMI adds Arsena's Act Three ditty, but I wish I liked her thin little voice better.

DR Jeanne asked:
What do you feel comfortable with these days?
Indoor dining in a restaurant?  No, not yet.
Outdoor dining at a restaurant?  Yes, but not in the current weather.
Public transportation? I have not taken a bus or subway since March 13, 2020.
Crowded spaces? (theatre, concerts, etc) Not yet.
Having cleaning help, plumbers, etc?  Since March 2020, I've had the super in to take care of various issues, a refrigerator service man, two refrigerator delivery men, and all wore masks.  I worried about none of it.  I also get groceries and takeout delivered to my door.
In cars with others? The closest I've come to that are my many taxi rides.

TOD

DVD and BD:  A couple of nights ago something made me take the original BBC TV and Hammer film versions of The Quatermass Experiment off the shelf, and I've been in the process of revisiting both series. I was just in the mood, and I'm enjoying them more than ever before.

CD:  The Renée Fleming "I Want Magic", and - perhaps - hopefully - if time permits - at least part of the Steurat Beford Albert Herring just received.

DR George, we had what appears to be our first mail delivery since Saturday,  Thanks for the package!

It's incredible how NYC gets *way* more impacted by their few inches of snow than up here in the wilderness where we get the real stuff. We only missed Monday's deliveries while the nor'easter was battering everyone.

On Tuesday, our plow guy had no sooner finished clearing our driveway around 11:00 a.m. when both a USPS and an Amazon van were driving up to the house bestowing gifts.

I do realize that the resulting slush is a huge factor in NYC snowstorm recovery.

I think too many postal carriers these days call in sick when they don't want to push a cart through large piles of snow.  In your neck of the woods, don't they drive?

Yes, but I think there might also be a little more of the "through rain, snow and sleet" ethic prevailing in some areas.

I don't believe I ever had a recording of The Gypsy Baron, but I went to pull out my vocal score and it's nowhere to be found. I don't recall giving it to anyone, so, I dunno. It was that orange-cover paperbound one that I'd had since the 1960s. Damn. Oh well.

Just listened to the Renée Fleming album. Beautiful stuff, and I had somehow missed that the aria from Herrmann's Wuthering Heights was on there. What a treat. Also especially loved the selections from The Medium, Candide, and The Rake's Progress.

"Summertime" and "My Man's Gone Now" are all right, but now I wonder how long white sopranos can go on singing these in the current non-cultural-appropriation climate. Maybe (Covid and 2020 notwithstanding) that had already slowed to a trickle. I have no idea. It used to be that "everyone" sang and recorded these, apart from the opera, but it's hard to imagine that being accepted now.

I think the context is important. The most haunting version of Summertime that I have ever heard and will likely ever hear was sung by a group of Soviet women, all white, dressed as workers and dreaming of a better life. But I doubt Mel Torme would get to play Porgy nowadays, even on a recording.

No new water leaks since last night, but the leaks seem to happen (at least, lately), between 6PM and 8PM.

The management sent someone to take a look today. At least wearing a mask. He was on a walkie-talkie with another guy in the apartments above us. They apparently cut out part of a wall upstairs, but didn't find a leak.

So, as DR Jrand70 says, we shall see what we shall see.

The only time I saw Rebecca Luker perform live was when the DH and I were acquaintances of George Cree, who at that time was the house manager of the St. James. He had us over to dinner and then we enjoyed The Secret Garden from his house seats. What a thrill!

Many years later, I got to sing with her as part of a group of guys, thanks to DR elmore3003. An experience for which I am still extremely grateful. Former DR Jason was in on that session, too.

Back from the concert. It was an interesting experiment. All of the musicians were spread out on the stage. Everyone but the winds and the like wore masks. The program was only an hour-long.

They only let about 150 people in. The patrons had to wear their masks throughout, which all but one or two complied with.

The program included two pieces written in the 1940s, Walker's Lyric for Strings and Tausky's Coventry" Meditation for String Orchestra. Both were somber pieces inspired by the war.

to make things a little livelier, they also played Mozart's Divertimento in D major, written when he was 16, and Haydn's Symphony No. 34 in D minor.

Thanks to all who gave feedback to my little survey of comfort levels during Covid. I went out for a veggie burger today and continued my survey with the two people there who I know. Both were happy to see outdoor dining allowed again, but both said they wouldn't do it.

When I lived in Old Town Alexandria our problem was where to put the snow. All the lots were narrow and dense and cars were thick at the curb. More open space would have helped greatly.

Friday morning greetings!  It's a paperwork day for me and I'm at my desk dealing with an issue that I probably shouldn't discuss on a public forum.  Nothing life-threatening, but very annoying.

Vibes for DR Ginny.

I got the only kind of lip balm I saw on Friday.  It is Orange-Mango Explosion.....and it lives up to its name.

Probably not a best-seller. I only buy unflavored and unscented lip balm. I find that both Badger and Dr Bronner make good ones.

SAG-AFTRA was going to censure DJT - so he quit instead......boldy proclaiming:  "Who cares?"

https://www.sagaftra.org/sag-aftra-statement-donald-j-trump%E2%80%99s-resignation-union

SAG's response to the letter.  "Thank you."

I wonder if he was wearing Melania's infamous jacket when he resigned.

Thanks for all the plumbing vibes!

Vibes they find the problem soon and it gets fixed pronto!

Finished with my viewing, and back from Gelson's - got a little green salad to go with my earlier sandwiches. Got some more Diet Coke and waters, butter and American cheese, then I went to 7-11 and finally cashed in my winning lottery ticket - first time I've ever won more than two bucks, I think - thirty bucks. The Darling Daughter gave me the card with some other Christmas stuff. She gives me those every year and have never had a winner until this time.

I usually chose them for size, looks, and settings.  I believe our current, built in,  one is a Dacor. I am pleased with it.  It was here when we moved in.

I suggest doing a search for best current models.

I played Asner, the sugar daddy of Dorothy Brock.  I always thought it was weird that they put my character into the “Lullaby of Broadway” song and dance number.  But there was Abner, singing and dancing in their production.

You were right, Tom.  I just looked it up and it was filmed at The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, which is a West End theatre.
