Well, you've read the notes, you now know that the summer knows, and now it is time for you to post until the knowing cows come home.

Well, today I'm going to my sister's to swap out the other two light fixtures that I didn't swap out earlier this past week because I need to be able to see when I do them, so I'll go over early this afternoon.  It's fairly simple to do.  Then, I'll come back home and do some work for work since I didn't do any yesterday.  Then tomorrow, I'll need to do the reports so that the Finance Office can pay the bills, so the invoicing must be done!

I'm undecided about today.  After I've printed my chart of expenses and income for my accountant, I may do some housework, or I may just lounge around with the cats. Decisions, decisions . . .

DR singdaw, you're about a week behind me!  I posted that Hansel and Gretel link on Feb. 15 with this comment:
BK, this Hansel and Gretel from Scottish Opera is so misguided you will bne apoplectic. The Witch thinks she's Carmen Miranda!
Title: Re: THE SUMMER KNOWS
Post by: elmore3003 on February 21, 2021, 04:21:56 AM
It really is a disgusting production.  Several weeks ago I posted this link to a 1981 German broadcast of the opera from Leipzig.  I'd like it better if a woman played the witch instead of a tenor but there are nice things about the production:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKXEVW4udvc

And here's a 1970 German film with an actual boy and girl playing Hansel and Gretel, but they are dubbed by an actual soprano and mezzo.  I'm wondering if all of this is dubbed.

I watched a few segments of that Scottish play Hansel and Gretel when DR Elmore posted it last week. It was a complete mystery as to what kind of production it was supposed to be, and I'm afraid I couldn't listen to the preamble beforehand, as it didn't seem to be shedding any light on anything. What a weird thing.

I have been reading a lot about hummus online. Hummus the authentic Mideastern way. It really gives me a hankering to try doing it from scratch. From what I have been reading, there are lots of tricks and tips to get a more smooth, silky, "authentic" result. Apparently some in Israel use thin onion "scoops" to eat it instead of fluffy fresh pita bread. I could go either way.

The rabbit hole is such an amazing thing. There are always new ways to think of to search for something, and never mind the limitless number of things to search on in the first place. This is why we need at least a five hundred year life span.

Do any of our Menotti aficionados have an opinion on the opera Maria Golovin?

I took my LP (which apparently is quite rare) off the shelf and found that this copy -- which oddly, I specifically remember buying at the record store across Melrose and down the block from Aron's -- is in bad shape. The damage is completely invisible. Rare, fine, but this one ain't worth a dime, so I searched CDs and found that Naxos issued it.

However, it must be out of print, and the listings are such that I don't know who I'd trust to order from. I started to buy the one for sale on Amazon, and the ship date comes back as late March to early April. What are they doing, copying and pressing bootlegs? Anyway, no hurry on it, just wondered.

There is a zoom production of the Mystery of Edwin Drood on at 7:30 p.m. ET tonight, if anyone wants to check it out. I saw the show in previews and always enjoyed that score.

I like the Menotti piece. The Naxos "release" is a bootleg - using the EU fifty-year rule. Don't know if it's good or bad. I wouldn't buy anything on Amazon that took that long to ship.

Well - I have found a new rabbit hole.

I put in a phrase such as "husband Killer" or "teen slayer" and add a few years such as "1925-1948" into Newspapers.com and then start reading news accounts of various trials.....from beginning to end.....most interesting....

The reporting in the main articles and sidebars can be best described as "breathless."

A Google search answered my own question. It was released as part of a 6-CD set, Sinatra in Hollywood, that now sells for $260 on Amazon. Go figure. I'd rather have a Kritzerland release. Hint. Hint.

Well, Drood is better staged than most zoom musicals, but the sound is still the problem. They could use that BK attention to details. And the actors in the outdoor scenes have bad red eye, though that works well with the villainous Jasper.

The ending of Drood was surprisingly emotional for a show that wraps everything in the artifice of the music hall. It ends with a resurrected Drood singing The Writing on the Wall with its lyrics, "Try to live forever/And give up never." It was filmed outdoors in a sunny, park-like setting, and as Drood was belting out the song, the actress was joined behind her by the chorus for real, all in costume and in black masks and maintaining their social distance. It was a very affecting moment. What a bloody marvel we survive.

Had a sandwich for food - California turkey reuben, which is basically the Trousdale sandwich I love - grilled rye, turkey, coleslaw, and thousand island dressing. Unfortunately, it's not a sandwich that travels well and the bread was completely soggy - it was good, but much better when the bread is dry.

I really love that score.  Wish I could've seen that production.

I talked to my cousin in Houston. She has electricity and water, but they have to boil the water.  She's not a particularly flexible person and had her complaints, but overall is doing OK.

Keith has a cousins that moved near there and built homes. Because of  hurricanes they added generators which they are grateful for.  They have had a mix of just frozen or burst pipes but no real damage.

I don't know if there water is back on.

Hello one and all.....brand new Broadway Radio Show is now up on this here site.  This week it's Putting It Together: Finian's Rainbow.  We'll hear the classic score by Yip Harburg & Burton Lane using 4 different cast recordings, plus some fun bonus tracks at the end from a wacky studio cast recording.  Enjoy!

http://www.haineshisway.com/the-broadway-radio-show-2/

Listening to that, and I want to hear the whole thing but I have to stop and resume later.

Can anyone tell me what makes a persimmon queer?

Usually, an off-color experience in an airport men’s room.

I do that ALL THE TIME with things in general, usually things I think of that I'd google if the google were right in front of me.

It's maddening.

I am glad to read that those things happen to someone else beside me.  I thought it might be early Alzheimer’s disease.

Well, Drood is better staged than most zoom musicals, but the sound is still the problem. They could use that BK attention to details. And the actors in the outdoor scenes have bad red eye, though that works well with the villainous Jasper.

The only time the sound isn’t the problem for DROOD is when it is muted.

No cheese?

I watched a very strange production of INTO THE WOODS last night on HD Broadway.  It was filmed in Regent’s Park in London.  I think the British are used to a stranger (and darker) version of fairy tales.

It reminded me very much of a book I had as a child that was illustrated with very strange characters.

That used to be available from www.digitaltheatre.com, and I bought it, but then they changed their format, and the download that I purchased no longer worked.  Damn them. >:(

However, I think I enjoyed THE PROM more than any one else in the world other than James Corden’s mother.
