Things did get rather uncomfortable when Annabelle buried under the blankets to get warm and I had her claws in my back and Stella plastered against my stomach. It's also got so chilly outside that for the first time all winter I opened the comforter sitting at the foot of the bed.

I could have warned you about Martha; Flotow and his confrere Lortzing are two of the post-Beethoven German opera composers who leave me cold. Thank God Johann Strauss and his operettas came along to liven up the German stage.

Speaking of Johann, I think you'd really like his Der Zigeunerbaron (The Gypsy Baron), set in 18th century Hungary and Vienna. Most recordings make cuts in the score to fit it to 2 CDs, but this recording is complete, with a conjectured reconstruction of the original Act Two Finale based on the new Johann Strauss Edition of the score.

Post by: elmore3003 on March 15, 2021, 06:38:43 AM: The cats and I watched the first two acts of the Met production of Carmen that BK liked, and he liked it much more than I did. I liked some of the staging and hated the set. During the Prelude,. at the sinister "Fate" theme, the curtains opened to let us watch two dancers choreograph sex, which I felt was unnecessary, since the opera's about obsession and murder. Then the curtains open on what should be a square in Seville at high noon as the guards chat about the people on the street. Instead, we get the barracks and prison with some soldiers dressing. I liked the business of booking prisoners, but I don't know what folk passing by the soldiers are singing about. The scene change comes with the changing of the guard, and the square in Seville looks like Stonehenge.

Since the cigarette factory is vague, the cigarette girls enter from a cistern in the stage floor rather than stroll down the stairs on their break. The costumes look 1930s, so I guess we're in Franco's Spain.

I was afraid Alagna would look too old at 53 or so for a young mama's boy, but he looked much younger. I liked Garanca's Carmen a lot, anf I liked the director's having her stab Don Jose with the flower rather than throwing it at him, since it mirrors his stabbing her in Act Four.

My other complaint is that in Act Two Don Jose comes on to her too hot and heavy in the duet before Zuniga is tied up and Jose goes from being a young soldier to a smuggler.

One last complaint? The Met still uses the grand opera edition with the Giraud recitatives written after Bizet's death. There's too much valuable info in the original spoken dialogue that gets cut in the recoitatives.

High Chaparral was must-see viewing in our house. Both of my sisters had crushes on Darrow.

As much as I have always loved westerns I never watched more than a few episodes of this show. Maybe I was simply too busy at the time to give it a chance though I do recall being disappointed.

We chatted a bit and I mentioned what a hard time I had getting a vaccine appointment, and she said "why didn't you give me a call?" I think she's a good person to have on your side!

I told them specifically it was a package from yesterday, but they handed me one that had come this morning. I didn't realize until I got home, so I called back and got the "we've been busy so it hadn't been scanned in yet" BS, and I had to remind them that I'm not some guy who returns Amazon packages, I'm a customer who pays them to have a box there and I and anyone who has a box there deserves to have their mail and packages scanned in and ready - that's why we PAY.

(I have to stop myself from saying "next month" because my sense of time is wonky.) Lots to take care of over the coming weeks.

A hedge fund owns the newspapers and has been cutting staff, as so often happens. I hadn't heard of this before, either. I hope it works out. We need a free ad healthy press.

I don and I like the office. My issue is with her touching my eyes since she hasn't been vaccinated.

I am trying an experiment on my own and have not used 2 of the 3 eye medications I have been taking. While my eyes are still blurred and bothersome I think the pain isn't as bad. It will be interesting what she has to say if I stay off of them.

I am now on two different inhalers. The solid-gold inhaler doesn’t even to have anything coming out of it, so it is hard to notice any difference. The other inhaler (the Albuterol) is easier to know I am inhaling it, but it doesn’t seem to do any good for my breathing.
