Well, you've read the notes, the notes were at 78% and going onward and upward, and now it is time for you to post until the onward and upward cows come home.

And the word of the day is: HALCYON!

And speaking of Bette Midler, here she is in her Continental Baths concert (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOrzpQeJyKI) from 1971. :)

Have a good day, all!
-
Good morning, all!

Last night the cats and I watched the Royal Ballet's latest production of Adolphe Adam's ballet Giselle, which, I gather, is for prima ballerinas what the role of Hamlet is to a star actor. Like Mr President - I'm with you, BK! - it's a work I keep trying to like and continue to think, meh!
It's rather dippy tale, set in medieval Germany, where a peasant girl, Giselle, living with her mother, the only old person in the village, has fallen in love with Count Albrecht, disguised as a peasant to seduce her, and who has rejected the hunter Hilarion, her mother's choice for a husband. A hunting party of aristocrats shows up, including Countess Albrecht, who is kind to the simple-minded peasant until Hilarion exposes her husband's philandering. Giselle goes mad and kills herself. That's Act One.
In Act Two, set after midnight in a forest by a lake, the perfect time to put flowers on a grave, shows up to put flowers on Giselle's grave, when the Willis attack him and drown him. The Willis are the ghosts of young girls who died for love, and their evil queen, Myrtha, is like a raging dyke on steroids. The Willis trap men and force them to dance ro death from exhaustion between the hours of midnight and dawn, so stay out of those forests after midnight. She introduces Giselle to the other Willis when Albrecht shows up with his flowers, and Giselle has to dance him to his death. Only she spares him and survives the night.
-
I kept falling asleep during Giselle, so as soon as it ended, I turned off the TV and went to bed, around 8:15. I'm really tired these days. I slept poorly, and Stella was a major issue. She kept forcing me to pet her, then she would lie down beside me; when I was almost asleep, something would distract her, and she would jump up and run off in pursuit. It was hell.
-
I have no plans today, which I like because tomorrow and that biopsy will be hellish.
-
On a happier note than Giselle, I see that Jerome Robbins' wonderful ballet Dances At A Gathering has finally been committed to DVD. I saw it performed at a City Ballet All-Robbins night that included, as I recall, Fancy Free and Dances from West Side Story. I have no idea what "gathering" the dancers are attending - funeral? family reunion? a park? - but by its conclusion I was moved to tears by a sense of loss and heartbreak. It's absolutely stunning.

Happy Birthday, Mr. J.S. Bach!

Speaking of Bach, did you know that he had a sword duel in the street with a recalcitrant bassoonist?

I was once told they were all crazy.

Hello everyone....we have a brand new Broadway Radio Show for your listening pleasure. Sorry, but since you are fine this morning that wasn't too bad a reaction. Did you have a fever?

I found the news report of the "judgment-challenged young father" a polite way of calling him a total idiot. Fortunately the story ends well, however, this idiot took his 2 year old daughter through multiple barriers into the bull-elephant enclosure for a selfie. Yes, the elephant charged.
Once they escaped unharmed the father was arrested for child endangerment.
-
Good
morning afternoon, all!
-
I was out of here in a hurry this morning because of a last minute church subbing job. And now I am back and it is a beautiful early spring day. Got stuff to do inside, but I'll try to get outside for bit later and maybe fire up a chainsaw or something.
-
Congrats on getting through your brief reaction, DR Jrand70.
-
Here's to a day of peace before your biopsy ordeal tomorrow, DR Elmore.
And here's hoping it'll go easier than you think.
-
Busy busy busy. Back later.

Well I brought 7 boxes (the case boxes for copy paper) to the Presbyterian church this morning. Leaving those boxes behind was really difficult for me...like leaving a pet and hoping they’ll be treated gently and loved. Most of my books look like new because I am careful to never break the spines , dog ear the pages, or mark the pages in any way.
-
And although I know the chances of me re-reading those particular books is small, I knew they were there in case I ever did choose to...
-
I do have several good, old friends (people I’ve known since I was 18) who attend that church and I was able to (“socially distant and masked) visit with them.

I learned the step son of one such friend just was engaged to a young woman from my church

Same here. I have no idea what kind of books you'd kept through the years - that would be different for all of us - but I did a really major purge in 2011, of both books and records (like, a few thousand records), and I look back on that now in horror, wondering how in the HELL I did it. And to be sure, several times I've looked for something I wish I hadn't gotten rid of then. But not too many times, and not one of the items has been a deal breaker.

79%!!! Hoping we can puuuuuuush to 80% and cross the 6K line today or tonight - so close to both. Anyone here interested in the published piano conductor scores for shows? I realized I have some great ones that I don't really use at all, most of which are first printings. If there's interest, I can put up some for the campaign.
-
elmore, I love the Robbins piece, but the companion piece, The Cellist, is fantastic - I wrote about it at length here. Blu-ray is on its way to me - I was really hoping it would be released and to get the Robbins as a bonus is great.
-
I'm up, I'm up - what a wacky night I had. In bed at three, could not fall asleep because my foot kept cramping up - so annoying. I finally just got up and stayed up until about seven-thirty. Went to bed, fell right asleep and woke up at around noon, fell back asleep and got up at one-thirty, so I think that's around seven hours overall.

Oh, is that what all the fuss in the news was about. I thought she was criticized for starting the Go Fund Me page, not for the "small" amount she donated. All the attention seems to have gotten a lot of donations.

I ushered for an interactive, immersive show based on The Office called The Scranton Strangler. It was a good excuse to be outdoors for a few hours. Well? No details?
-
I'm now watching Steven Soderbergh's Schizopolis. It's cute, hasn't aged well, but hits the mark when it comes to Scientology.
-
It's certainly different from Thomas Hardy's Pair of Blue Eyes, which is getting old. I have less than 100 pages to go, or I would stop it now.
-
Re keeping books:
I NEVER used to get rid of books. No marks, no broken spines. They were sacred. But real estate became too expensive and some things had to go. It was an effort, to be sure, but I now cull from time to time. I also buy many books used now, especially if it's an author I'm trying out. If I love the book I can always buy a new copy. I still keep more than I should, but it's progress.
-

I got some burgundy alstroemerias. For food, I found a mix of nuts and dried olives that sounded interesting, some Persian cucumbers, farro and sun-dried tomatoes to experiment with, some of their housebrand potato chips (which remind me a little of Charles' Chips), and some smoked salmon, which I had a little of rolled up with cream cheese and scallions inside. Oh, yeah, and some dark chocolate-covered almonds with salt and raw sugar.
-
John G, are Texans going out freely now, pre-Covid? Are many wearing masks?
-

In San Antonio people are mostly wearing masks. There were a couple on the one of the shows today that had to be reminded nicely about four times in a 20-minute period before their show started to keep the mask on.

I'm that way, too, in taking care of them. I've read whole books - both hardcover and paper - which, if they're something I bought new, you can't tell they were ever opened.

When LA partially opened up last summer everyone thought that the restaurants would be mobbed, but they weren't. The beaches, yes, in some areas. I've seen some increase in customers at some restaurants, but not others. One restaurant manager told me that she's glad to see the increase, but that she's not going out to eat. I suspect many here feel that way. I'm glad to see the increase in business, but I'm not ready to do it myself.

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening! Today was a decent day. Work in the morning, some friends came over and I made a taco salad bar and we worked on a murder mystery we've been solving in this series called "Hunt a Killer" - we completed our second task. That was fun. Great cap of a mediocre weekend!

The Washington Center is going to have its first (at least, this is the first to be announced) in-person event on April 20. They only need four ushers (and no concessions), so I don't think there's much hope of me getting assigned, but we'll see. :)

Oh, yeah, and some dark chocolate-covered almonds with salt and raw sugar.
Ah! You weren't using my grocery list then.
I actually went in looking for fennel. Third supermarket in three days with no fennel. Guess it's out of season.
Or out of fashion.
