It was a weird night of sleep and a weird night of dreams involving friends from different times and places. I awoke around 11:30 with terrible leg cramps so I needed to get out of bed and stretch a bit. I noticed Annabelle was no longer sleeping beside me. Usually she lies dow on the pillow next to me between 9:30 amd 10:00, and I assumed - since I was asleep - that she stayed there all night. So, I went back to bed and she jumpled up beside me, and I assume she was there all night.

I was awake several times and whenever I woke, she was still with me.  Around 4:00, when it got really cold, she crawled under the blanklets and slept at my knees.

I had one dream in which I was working on a talent show and we were seeing acts, A friend from Miami University Summer Theatre around 1970, who now teaches voice in North Carolina, was one of the performers. In another dream I was riding the subway with our DR ChasSmith and my late acquaintance Richard Traubner to attend Die Fledermaus at the Met.

Today's a busy day. Amazon Fresh is delivering groceries aroud 9:00, Joshie is coming by to pick up the score I finished, and my neighbor Jen is coming by to assemble a rolling cart for me. I also want to make pasta sauce if there's time.

My Amazon Fresh delivery was scheduled for some time between 9:00 and 11:00.  It was deliovered at 8:15. WTF?

I was not amused,  I was on my hands and knees on the bathroom floor cleaning the litter when the delivery rang my bell. No, I was not amused.

DR JohnG, I haven't read about Ambroise Thomas and his opera Hamlet in some time, but my memory is that the original ending of the opera was the coronation of Hamlet as King of Denmark, and his final lines were something like "My love is dead and I am king."  This ending was revised when the opera was produced outside of France; they knew the English audiences would laugh their buitts off.

I do love Ophelia's mad scenel it;s not just a coloratura spectacular, but it reaches real pathos by the end.

I'm also fond of Thomas' mangling of Goethe. Mignon, which has wonderful music and great tunes. The overture is beautifully orchestrated:

I’m glad they changed the ending. It’s not as action-packed as Shakespeare’s. But there’s a rightness to this version, which has the ghost come back at Ophelia’s graveside and force the mortally wounded Hamlet to avenge his death. The ghost doesn’t care about his son, only vengeance for his own death.

Post by: ChasSmith on May 06, 2021, 07:04:57 AM
For probably the first ten years of my life, the only cheese (or "cheese") I knew was Velveeta.

I'm a little better now, thank you.

At some point, swiss cheese came into my life. I know I was crazy about ham and swiss sandwiches in college. Later, muenster and cheddar became additional favorites. Suddenly, fondues were all the rage and I loved the Gruyere or Emmenthaler or whatever was used. I also just remembered liking those little Laughing Cow cheeses during my earlier days in L.A. Haven't had those in years.

I never got to like the stinky cheeses, but most others are great. I do stay away from "American" now, except for cheeseburgers because it's such a good melting cheese. I mean, cheese product. Grilled cheese sandwiches, too, but only as a single layer helper along with my typical combination of cheddar and swiss.

Cheese, Part II

I do love fine cheeses that pair well with good wines, but that's a pleasure I haven't indulged in in way too long, and I can't rattle off any names regardless. A recent favorite, though, is the very popular "Abbey Cheese" sold at the Abbey of Regina Laudis, home of my close personal friend Mother Dolores Hart. What with the pandemic and a lot of reconstruction there, I have no idea when their shop will reopen, let alone when the cheeses will be available again. But I do look forward to that day.

That cheese is made from raw milk, and that's a tricky subject, but they comply with the very strict laws concerning the production and sale of that cheese. It's my only experience with raw milk (and shall remain that way), but I can tell you that the cheese is delicate and delicious.

I have rather pedestrian tastes in cheese. Sharp Cheddar is fine for cooking, but I’d rather eat milder cheeses plain.

My favorite is Emmentaler, a type of Swiss.

I love blue cheeses, too, but I had to stop eating them because I realized they were exacerbating my mold allergies.

So anyway...

I'm almost positive I didn't post about it then because a lot was going on at the time, but my dad died at the end of January last year, literally at the start of tech week for my last show before Covid. He had taken a bad fall, which so often brings older people closer to their end if there are other complications. It was just a couple of months before he would have turned 95.

He'd made plans to donate his body to the UC medical center, just as my mom had done 25 years before that, and we initially planned a memorial service to be held in May (last year), since that pesky coronavirus thing was going to hold things up for a couple of months. Ha! A year and a couple of postponements later, we are finally doing it THIS May, next Saturday the 15th. So I'm off to Cincinnati next Wednesday, for that and to stop in to see a few other relatives (all vaccinated, etc.) for the first time in a couple of years. It'll be a short but good trip.

My Amazon Fresh delivered 45 minutes before schedule, then Joshie came by, I watched my soaps, and then = after four days - the jerk manager of our local post office finally called about the packages for 2130 West 82nd Street sitting in our lobby for the past six days. I told him this incorrect mail delivery happens way too often, about once every two weeks, and that I've been missing a paclage for the past three weeks, and the ass blew it off by saying, it happens everywhere. I wanted to say, not if you'd give your workers a hard time about it.

Uh....MANK.  I really thought I was going to see a movie about the writing of "Citizen Kane" - and I got a little bit about that.  BUT mostly it was an excuse to equate an election in California in 1934 to the last couple of elections in the U.S.

It seemed rather unnecessary to tie these two events together and turned the movie into kind of a slog for me.  And for all the praise for Amanda What'shername, her performance seemed sort of TV-movie like to me and didn't seem to capture much of the essence of Marion Davies.....sort of like Carol Lynley as Harlow......

I woke at 5:45, then fell back to sleep, but slept lightly and had a strange dream. The dream was about my friends -- Mitt's parents -- who were good friends with Joe Biden. I think that seeing Joe on TV triggers memories of them and takes me back to those years. My day started strangely as a result. I hope that those of you who often recall your dreams don't wake feeling discombobulated, like I did.

They did they same thing to me after my last surgery. They were trying to demonstrate to me how to change the catheter bags. I was out of my mind at that point and not absorbing a word of it.

Don't understand why they can't figure out that it doesn't work.

BK, I'm reading Some Days Are Murder on the Kindle app on my tablet.  I'm on chapter 5 and there are a couple of extra blank lines just in amongst everything.  They don't seem to be separating any new chapter or section, just one blank line at one point, then another blank line.  I don't know if you caught them in the print edition, or can fix them (if you even want to), but I just thought you'd want to know, if you didn't already.

My babysitter, when I was seven or eight years old, used to make Welsh Rabbit.
It was toast with tomato slices, topped with melted Velveeta.

From DR TCB:

Fortunately (for him), when he sent a message asking permission, he received back almost immediately a reply telling him to GET OFF THAT SHIP - NOW!

It almost sounds like someone had a premonition though they likely just wanted him to return to work.

Do you know if the nice couple survived?

If I remember correctly, the woman survived, but her husband did not.
