Well, you've read the notes, the notes did Mr. Stravinsky, and now it is time for you to post until the Stravinsky cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: SANGUINE!
-
Topic of the Day: I was never a specific Clint Eastwood fan. I think the only movie of his (as an actor) that I've watched all the way through was Paint Your Wagon. ::) I haven't even seen Pink Cadillac, and Bernadette Peters is in that.
-
And as a director, I have seen Jersey Boys.
-
That's pretty much it.
-
And now, I'm off to bed.
Have a good day, all!
-
Good morning, all!
-
I slept rather well kast night, so why am I so sleepy now?
-
Last night we watched the 1978 PBS broadcast of the Opera Theatre of St Louis production of Benjamin Britten's comic opera Albert Herring. I've seen three live productions - University of Cincinnati CCM, Manhattan School of Music, and a lower East Side production - and three or four videos including Sir Peter Hall's Glyndebourne production, and I'm moving this St Louis production to the top of the list with the Cincinnati production of performances. It's really well done. The comedy is about the events preparing for May Day 1900 in a small English town, Loxford, reigned over by Lady Billows, a Wagnerian harpy with her nose in everyone's business, and her housekeeper Florence Pike. The committee of town leaders - Mayor, vicar, police chief, and school teacher Miss Wordsworth = have failed to find a pretty young virgin to crown as May Queen, the town's symbol for purity, innocence, and grace. As Florence Pike observes, "Country virgins, if there be such, think too little and see too much."
So, they decide to crown Albert Herring, the greengrocer's son and repressed mama's boy, as May King, and all hell erupts, especially after his friend Sid, with his girlfriend Nancy, laces his lemonade with rum at the May Day festivities.
The weakest performance performance for me was the ditzy coloratura school teacher; the singer is young and pretty and sings well, but she's not a very good actress. The Mayor, Vicar, and Police sergeant are wonderful. The Sid and Nancy are attractive and quite wonderful as two unabashed young lovers sneaking around after dark behind their parents, and James Hoback as Albert is really terrific. The jury is still out on Pauline Tinsley, who just died a week ago at the age of 93, as Lady Billows. She has the notes and the poise, but she's not Edith Evans' Lady Bracknell, which seems the prototype.
The production does a wonderful job of filling out visuals during the scene change interludes in Acts One and Two, and my only other complaint is the erratic sound mix of the chamber orchestra.
-
I must pay some bills today and accomplish a bit of work. I also need to call my friend Michael Gildin, who conducted the Fiddler on the Roof that DR Laura saw, and see if I can hire him to help me weed out a lot of unnecessary materials from the apartment.
-
Good morning, friends.
-
Thanks for that comprehensive report, DR elmore3003. I love Albert Herring. That coincidentally is the new production by Minnesota Opera, available online for free now through June 5 at mnopera.org
Unfortunately, I found the sound levels quite low. It's an environmental staging. I haven't finished it yet. My sense is that it's not at the level of some of the performances you describe.
-
Congrats to MR BK on his monumental millstone.
-
I guess I don't understand the purchase of meals through the mail....I understand the concept, but I don't see how ALL of them could be good.
I of course eat some frozen meals now and then....especially the Marie Callender "bowls" - but I am sure they are full of calories and carbs.
-
One more rehearsal and then off until Monday.
Last night, the local newspaper took some photos. It doesn't seem to be on their site....yet.
-
Albert Herring - thanks for the info DR ELMORE and thanks to DR singdaw for the link.

Good morning, all.

Last night I watched Mystery of the Wax Museum and the first 30 minutes of the first commentary. At that point I was nodding off because I started too late, so I shall finish that commentary and listen to the other one tonight.
What an incredible style! The once or twice I'd ever seen it, I simply wasn't appreciating it like you can now with this restoration. My eyes were glued to every shot, and all of DR Elmore's observations are spot on.
My Doctor X is supposed to be delivered today, and I'm sure I won't be able to resist watching that one straight through tonight as well.
-
Indeed, congratulations are to be extended to bk on his lofty new perch in the HHW firmament.
-
Thank you, DR Elmore, for the Albert Herring write-up, and DR singdaw for the additional link.
I wish I had a recording of our production at school. I played the piano in the chamber orchestra, and from what I'm remembering, that pit orchestra should have sounded damned good. But I don't imagine for one minute that the production would even have approached that of, say, the UC-CCM one DR Elmore refers to.

Thanks for the link, DR singdaw, but I hated what I saw. We're no longer in 1900, Florence Pike is the housekeeper, not the maid. Her tragedy is that her position at Lady Billows' estate makes her believe she's above the middle class people she must associate with and not the aristocracy where she feels she belongs. Lady Billows looks far too young and sophisticated to be such a prig about virtue. The kids look great, as does Albert, but Sid looks too old with that beard. And where is the orchestra?

That final greenish set for the museum's workroom is amazing.

I have that Dirty Harry box set and enjoyed watching those, in their varying degrees of goodness and badness, back when I got that set, however long ago that was. At that time, I had never seen any but the first film, and in my ignorance I was actually surprised to find Tyne Daly there. I've only seen those others just that one time, so I'm ready to go again.

If anyone is interested in that 1978 PBS broadcast of Albert Herring, here's a link to the DVD. The picture quality is very good. You need to log on and search for it among the various other DVDs and CDs of the opera, where it's listed as 1978 Hoback, Tinsley, Gerber, Pruett, Christin; Moriarty. (No Subtitles). I see that Mineapolis Opera production is here on both CD and DVD.

When I saw that the link did not go directly to the DVD, I added more info to my original post.

DR Elmore, do you have your Access-a-Ride today? I remembered you moved it to later in the week.

No, I moved the appointment to the week of June 7. I was not moving well yesterday.

Thursday morning greetings! I have been busy this week scouring our home for items to donate to the AAUW garage sale. I found one box of glassware in the basement that was wrapped in newspapers from April and May of 1988. That's when I was packing our belongings to move into this house. Think it's safe to get rid of those canning jars?

For sure, DR Ginny. It's disgusting how full of sodium everything is.
-
DR ChasSmith, you asked a while ago about cheese crowns from Graeter's. You might be able to order them: www.graeters.com/stores/bakery
-
DR John I think you should go to your high school reunion.
-
My father was 80 when he retired.
-
He loved being a doctor.
-
DR Laura I am sure it was great fun watching your excited grandson watch the recycling truck.
-
From DR Laura:
I hugged Wae-Ling for the first time in over a year. And she rode in my car.
This warms my heart.
-
I hope DR TCB is feeling better.

Thank you, but sadly, there's no indication that they make them at all anymore. I still can't believe it.

Me, too.

Congratulations to BK on his lofty new post count
111,000 congratulations!

I'm up, I'm up - nine hours of sleep, maybe nine-and-a-half, to make up for yesterday's six-and-a-half, I suppose.
-
I haven't hugged my nieces in over a year. They are getting their first shots on Saturday.
And I'm probably going to be able to get my second one at the end of June (vs mid-August when I am scheduled).

If you go to the page I’ve linked, then click on “See our bakery guide,” it opens a PDF. On page 2, under Danish Rolls, you’ll see Cheese Crowns along with another of my faves, Cinnamon Squares.
-
Richard and I have returned from several errands, including - drumroll, please - grocery shopping inside Kroger for the first time since March 12, 2020.

Was it scary, Ginny? Kroger, that is.

Ah! I did nose around, but not enough. Thank you, I'll give that another shot.

It had its moments, DR John G!

I can't get on that Opera website. No matter how I try, I can only get to a login page. It doesn't offer a way to create an account, that I can see. Anyway, no way to search.
-
Well, I'm leaving work now to see a new movie and watch a Q&A.
Until later!

Vibes you get your second shot sooner than later.
Are you spending more time with them now the weather is nicer?

Congratulations. Did you keep your masks on?

I've been seeing them twice a week except when it was my niece's birthday. Then I saw her an extra 2 days.
I guess I've been staying a bit longer. It depends what activities my younger niece has and if anyone feels like talking to me.
-
DR Jane I can't get my second shot before June 23rd. They are saying that it has to be 8 weeks. And they haven't organized the website for 2nd shots yet (since every just got their appointment). But it seems like most people are going to have the option to go sooner. But for my vaccine it is 8 weeks.

Waiting until June is hard, but until August. Good luck. Even if you aren't hugging yet I am glad you get to see them.

Hello, 0 Guests.
-
Good night, friends.

Okay, this is definitely an issue.
A local friend of mine had the same problem. He was telling me he couldn’t find the way to sign up, and asked how I did it. I just knew I had a login and password, but we do this every day of our lives now so I had absolutely no memory of this particular instance. I’m afraid I didn’t follow up on it. I just figured he was somehow missing it that day.
A thought: Could it be an invitation site? Did DR Elmore or someone sign me up there, and that’s how I got on?
-
Just went there, and found no evidence of it being that kind of thing.
-
Finished with my viewing.
-
Tried another Factor meal - chicken breast with a sun-dried tomato sauce and zucchini strings. Now, they say this is 700 calories and ten grams of net carbs, but I really don't see how. The breast can't be more than four ounces, there's nothing really fattening in the sauce and the zucchini is squat. And where are these fifteen grams of net carbs coming from? Certainly not the zucchini or the breast and the sauce is all Keto friendly stuff - so, I don't believe any of it. Since Keto isn't about calories I think they're trying to make it sound more substantial than it actually is. Anyway, this one wasn't bad in that I could actually eat it.
-
Went country-western dancing tonight.
-
It was fun, but, boy, did I feel rusty.
-
I completely forgot the shuffle, a dance I never cared much for. But they had a class with a couple of steps in it, so they played about 20 over the course of the evening.
-
I hadn't polka'd in ages either, but that largely came back quickly. Thanks to Oscar Hammerstein. "One, two, three and ... One, two, three and ..."
-
There were only a few women wearing masks. The only man with a mask was at the door, taking temperatures.
-
It was business as usual for everyone else.
-
Recognized a number of people from other dance halls in the area.
-
Everybody's getting back into the swing.
-
I have been enjoying Elmore's tales of Annabelle and Thatch.
-
A lovely way to finish up an evening.
-
But I must call it a day.
-
I'm tired.
-
But not too tired to get us off this page.
-
Four!
-
I hope TCB is feeling well enough to take us to page five.
-
Or George shows up.
-
Anyway, good night, all.
-
Where in tarnation IS everyone?
-
Listening to another Gounod opera, Mireille. Old-fashioned but nice - a mono recording conducted by Andre Cluytens.
-
Or George shows up.
I has arrived!
-
Well, the preview showing of A Quiet Place Part II was pretty good.
-
Both Margo and I really liked it (it's quite intense), but she didn't like it as much as the first movie.
-
She thought that this seemed a little too disjointed with scenes going back and forth (or something like that), but when your group of lead actors split up, then you have to tell both stories...by going back and forth.
-
Gratuitous Post #100!
-
A bit of a spoiler here (but not really): at the beginning of this new movie, it's a flashback to when the aliens arrived on Earth, but it's different than what was shown in the first movie.
-
I had forgotten that part, but Margo reminded me of how it happened in the first movie, and then I remembered that she was right. :-\
-
Why would they change something like that??
-
Anyway, they had a break for about 15 minutes before the Q&A.
-
J.J. Abrams asked the questions submitted by Twitter followers.
-
They also had people in their live audience ask questions, BUT...
-
NONE OF THE AUDIENCE QUESTIONS WERE ON MICROPHONES!! :o
-
No one who was watching via streaming could hear ANY questions!!
-
And there was this one guy who kept talking and obviously complimenting John Krazinski on his film making because all John kept saying was, "Thank you."
-
"Thank you!"
-
Several times...without explaining to the steaming audience what he was saying at all!
-
I think that there were four or five live audience questions and none could be heard.
-
You'd think that the producers of one of the most highly anticipated movies of the summer would have thought to bring just two extra microphones for the audience members!
-
:P
-
So that was a wasted opportunity on their part.
-
But if you liked the first movie, you'll definitely like this one. :)
-
I don't think I cared for the first movie all that much.
-
Then again, I can't remember much about it at all.
-
DR Jane I can't get my second shot before June 23rd. They are saying that it has to be 8 weeks. And they haven't organized the website for 2nd shots yet (since every just got their appointment). Eight weeks? That is crazy, Jennifer.
-
I have been enjoying Elmore's tales of Annabelle and Thatch.
Wait a minute! Are there some new stories I haven’t gotten to read??
-
Page five? Whoopee!
-
We need posts.
-
And more posts.
-
I feel much better tonight.
-
Today I had my first appointment at the pain clinic.
-
The PA was very nice.
-
We just talked.
-
He asked me who decided to cut my dose from 4 tablets a day to 3.
-
I said that the doctor and I talked about it, and that I suggested we try cutting the dose.
-
He said the dosage (is that a word?) seemed quite reasonable and he didn’t see why we couldn’t continue it at that level.
-
So, I see him again in three weeks.
-
They don’t prescribe any medication at the first appointment.
-
Of course not, why not get paid for two appointments instead of one.
-
Oh, sorry, but really what other reason is there?
-
Well, I am all alone.
-
So, I guess I will say good night.
-
I feel much better tonight.
Great news, Tom!
-
The PA was very nice.
That's good.
-
Well, I am all alone.
Sorry I missed you.
