Well, you've read the notes, the notes were noisy but legal, and now it is time for you to post until the noisy, illegal cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: APLOMB!
-
And now - Dino at the piano.
-
As annoying the fireworks are, they actually don't really bother me too much. And both my cats seemed to not be affected by the noise, either. My niece, however, has four cats and five chickens who are all bothered by the noise. And she has a condition called hyperacusis, where loud noises are physically painful. She REALLY hates the fireworks on the 4th of July and New Year's Eve.

Oh, my goodness! Los Angeles fireworks explosion: Man had 16 tons of fireworks at home, including devices that later blew up and injured 17 (https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/los-angeles-fireworks-explosion-man-had-16-tons-of-fireworks-at-home-including-devices-that-later-blew-up-and-injured-17/ar-AALLIui?ocid=uxbndlbing)!

I hope they put this moron away for a very long time.
-
And we just had a slight earthquake.
-
2.0. And where was it centered? Three blocks from here.
-
Good morning, all!
-
Around 9:45, just as I was turning down the bedding, we had a brief spate of fireworks, not more than fifteen minutes. I slept rather well.
-
We all survived the night. After the fire crew left, I kept a close eye on the cats because I was unable to judge if they were affected by the gas leakage or not. I think we're lucky the AC was running, along with two oscillating fans or we might have been affected hours earlier. I never thought the problem was the stove because I hadn't used it all day. After the breakfast cleanup, the only time I touched the stove was when I supported myself as I climbed that ladder and when I set a grocery delivery on its top to unpack it around 3:00.

DR singdaw, I could hear other firemen moving around the building, but I only saw the one who came to my door. I can tell you, from the times they used to stop in en masse at Barnes & Noble, that the crew at the 83rd Street firehouse is quite a handsome one. The fireman who came to my apartment was about 6'3" or so, and his physique looked pretty good, given that he was dressed in heavy fire gear. He was blond, and looked like a cross between Brad Pitt and Robert Redford.
-
I had too much stress yesterday, so I plan to do little as possible today.

Last night, we ended up watching the 1980 Glyndebourne production of Mozart's Abduction from the Seraglio, my least favorite of the Mozart Big Five operas. The music is glorious, but the story's a slog, and for a comic opera, I found it almost completely humorless. The designs and costumes were beautiful, and the five principal singers were excellent. The romantic leads were the really beautiful British soprano Valerie Masterson, who has great stage presence, good coloratura, and sings most of the role in the stratosphere, and a handsome Welsh lyric tenor, Ryland Davies. The comic (huh?) couple were British lyric soprano Lillian Watson, whom I met in 2001 recording McGlinn's Babes In Toyland and who appears in the Domingo film of Carmen as either Frasquita or Mercedes, and American tenor James Hoback, whom I praised for his appearance in the title role of Albert Herring. The fifth singer was the wonderful bass Willard White, whom I first heard on the Cleveland Orchestra recording of Porgy and Bess.
I phoned 911 at the end of Act One, but I had no urge to continue after the firemen left. I played on the computer until I went to bed.

T.O.D.
We stayed home and watched television.
Gave our dog a pill, so he would not freak-out over the fireworks.
-
Good morning, all.

A friend is coming over to pick up potted plants I don’t want to die after I leave for Louisville next week.
-
Hard to believe I leave in a week.
-
I meed to clean house today. Ugh.
-
After hearing DR ELMORE's description, I need to call the fire department.
-
The official fireworks started about 9:50 p.m. I could see a lot of them through the trees.... there were other fireworks also going off.....
It was loud for awhile. The windows were closed and Birdy Barnum didn't seem too rattled by the noise. I came in before the BIG ending and covered him up....
Still a few bangs and whistles after midnight.....but not many.
Mostly yesterday I worked on the computer and sent out messages trying to get someone to join our happy band of brothers..... Hey, folks, if you don't want to do it.....just say NO and let me move on. Don't leave me hanging for days.....
I'm afraid I'll end up with two.....or take someone I really don't want to work with when someone else says YES after ignoring my message for a week.
-
According the US POST OFFICE site - there is NO mail today.
-
After hearing DR ELMORE's description, I need to call the fire department.
I hope they find what ails you.
-
Good morning, friends.
-
The neighborhood fireworks scene last night here wasn't as bad as I was expecting.
-
But it still amazes me how many people are so inconsiderate of anyone but themselves.
-
Good morning to everyone I hope you had a great holiday weekend
-
Love the new photo that headlines your daily blog. But when you go back in the archives it shows the old photo. Including today’s which is weird.
-
Went to a dinner party last night with a group of friends. There were no fireworks in the area. I wonder if there was a ban against them
-
TWO!!
-
Good morning!
-
The Costco here has also just added self check outs. I always thought that they should do an 8 and less cash like they do at grocery stories. Although most people seem to buy full carts.
-
We couldn't see the fireworks from our room and didn't feel like going outside.
-
I can't even believe that some states let people set off their own fireworks. Or that anybody would want to do that.
-
We could see people on the pathway below us watching something.
-
We ate leaving Astoria and heading for the gym.
-
While the drive will take longer than usual we will arrive earlier.
-
Made spinach and nutmeg soup today, which means only one soup in the cookbook remains.
I'm going to take that recipe, seafood soup with Parmesan toast, with me to Louisville next week and make it for Mom's birthday. It's kinda bouillabaisse-like.
-
Monday afternoon greetings! After our TCM movie date on Saturday we had a nice steak and baked potato dinner.
About 9:30 I went to sit on the front porch, hoping to see some of the fireworks show from Smith Park. There was a commotion two houses to the east that involved a dad yelling profanities, the kids crying, and a dog going berserk. The dog was running wild and each time they thought he was calming down another nearby firework got him all riled up again. He eventually headed in my direction and my childhood terror of dogs surfaced. When he was at the edge of our porch I bolted for the door and kind of fell into our house. I was not injured, but have felt a little achy since.
We did go back outside and saw skydivers deliver fireworks and flares to the park.

Got an album of Laura Nyro songs from the library the other day called Sassafras and Moonshine. It's her songs sung by other artists, including the Supremes, the Fifth Dimension, Thelma Houston and Bobbie Gentry. Judy Kuhn closes out the album with a song from her Laura Nyro collection.
I know Nyro's revered among many, but this album doesn't show off her talents well. Except for the big hits, like Stoned Soul Picnic, And When I Die, Eli's Coming and Wedding Bell Blues, too much of it sounds the same. You can almost feel the horn section before it comes in, the vampy intros are alike, there's a sameness to the breathy vocal requirements.
Anybody wanna help me out as to why I should like her more?

Yesterday we went to church in Dayton and afterwards went to lunch with Ed and Judee, a nice couple about 10 years older than we are. We did a very all-American thing - went for Chinese food.
-
Because the 90-degree heat is back, Richard and I decided to stay in for the evening. We watched "The Music Man" on TCM, fireworks shows from Washington and New York, and "1776," back on TCM. That kept us up until about 1am. As we were heading to bed we saw an ambulance and 2 police cars at a house across the street. Their neighbor Rosemary suspects it was a fireworks mishap.

Good Morning - yesterday we had a wedding reception in the family - a year after the wedding. My cousin got married quietly last 4th of July and obviously couldn't have a party - but they certainly made up for it yesterday. It was great seeing all the kids and how big they are getting, etc. The reception was at the Hillar Aviation Museum, so the museum was open to browse, there were games and stuff for the kids, the museum had a lot of cool hands on things, the food was great - several local food trucks and restaurants.... it was such a great day. Seeing everyone was just .... I have no words here.... the best. To add to this, my grandparents anniversary was July 4, and there was always a celebration. It's nice to have a new anniversary in the family on that day now.
Oh, and my niece got married yesterday, as well- but that DR's, is another story for another day.
I left early as the dancing started and came home and hung out with the boys. At one point, I grabbed a cigar and went outside to see if I could see any fireworks - all illegal, of course, but there are too many trees in my area. I can remember as a kid, setting off fireworks (legal) in the street. I miss that. The sounds of the booms and the crackles in the air last night was sorta comforting. The boys didn't care at all.
Went to bed late, got up late and today is technically the first day of my summer vacation where I am not "on vacation" or teaching a summer school class. If that makes sense...
-
Good
morning afternoon, all.
-
I was up very late last night, and fortunately was able to sleep in this morning to make up for it.
-
DR Matthew mentioned the childhood setting off of legal fireworks in the street. We still do that right here, in the driveway.
We had planned on doing that and grilling some food yesterday evening, but a light rain came around at about that time and it kind of cooled off a bit too much to be comfortable outside, so, along with the rest of the world, we watched some TV, including 1776 on TCM, and we'll be having our little outdoor fest this evening.
-

DR Elmore, I'm so glad your triple murder and suicide attempt didn't succeed last night.
Isn't that amazing, finding a gas stove knob left on when one hasn't even been using the stove. Holy moley. It just goes to show... exactly what, I don't know, but I'm sure it goes to show something or other!
-
I enjoy "The Talk," but there is a new woman on that show with the most obnoxious, forced "huh huh huh" laugh I would love to see permanently muted.

I must have accidentally turned it when I was falling all over the stove and ladder. I told Joshie, and he thinks Stella was trying to kill us.

I dareay the lot of yuz would hate the fireworks scene around here. Being in a sorta semi-rural neighborhood, this stuff is much more common here than - I suspect - even what some of you are reporting around your own areas. But I do believe last night's performance outdid anything I've heard in my three decades here.
I'm happy to say I personally don't mind it, and none of our cats have ever seemed to give a flying Wallenda about fireworks, either, something I'm very grateful for. Which is just as well, because we hear quite a bit of it through the summer.
A former neighbor, however, lost a beloved old dog to fear of fireworks some 25 years ago. We all loved that dog, and even my two cats at the time had grown to tolerate him coming around. But they had never been able to alleviate his lifelong fear of those explosions, and that is literally what killed him on a July 4th. He was up in years but in otherwise great health, and there was never any question about why he died.
So it IS a big deal for animals -- especially dogs. Anyone who has a dog who doesn't mind them is very fortunate.
-
Last night was something else, though. We live near a lake where we know a lot of it comes from, but it went on non-stop for nearly an hour, from all sides. I have no idea whether the cops even try to curtail it. There would truly no way, except in cases where someone is so stupid as to do it right out in the open. But we have tons of "out in the open" spaces that are on private property. You can drive around and never see a thing, while it's going off all around you.
-
As far as celebrating on the fourth vs any other day, it's all over the map here. In a normal year when there are official fireworks, some of the displays are scheduled as much as a week early so as not to overlap. It seems like when I was growing up, you only ever celebrated on the fourth, period, whatever day of the week it fell on. That included your picnic or whatever you did, and the fireworks themselves. But perhaps I remember wrong.
-
That being said, I'm just about ready for some burgers and hot dogs and all that good stuff. We'll be doing it in a couple of hours.
-

A model citizen who knows how to show respect and gratitude!
-
I'm up, I'm up - seven hours of sleep.
-
I, too, was up very late.
-
A friend is coming over to pick up potted plants I don’t want to die after I leave for Louisville next week.
What are you doing about the plants you do want to die?
There are a few plants that should survive, like the pineapples and the rosemary. Most everything else is in the ground.
-
Watching Cimarron. Why, I don't really know. It's not that good, but Irene Dunne is game.
-
I've had a lovely bath, and it was made more enjoyable by the fact that Annabelle actually ate her salmon for dinner. Half the time these days she refuses to eat the Fancy Feast I put out at 3:00 for dinner, and Thatch and Stella eat her share. As a consequence I overcompensate at treat time throwing every dry food in my arsenal at her.
As I was drawing my bath water I could see her bent over a dish. It made my day.

Any my physical is done, too. My doctor was very pleased with my numbers and my weight loss so far.
-
But I have to go to the hospital tomorrow for a test on another issue.
-
I'm starving today. Anybody got a spare pork chop?
-
Just a little nosh...
-
Since my visit today involved blood work, I fasted from last night at about 7:00pm to this afternoon about 3:00pm. I was a little hungry, too!
-
I broke my fast with a hard-boiled egg and raw celery with lemon hummus.
-
Now roasting broccoli and cauliflower, and have a lovely salmon fillet on deck for dinner.
-
Fasting. I'll leave it to you.
-
Yeah. I'm leaving it, too.
-
Last night we went out to eat, the first time since Jan 2020.
We went to a jernt that specializes in Walleye (Pike), and that's what we had. Delicious. Here in MN, they're fished out (catch and release only), so I believe the restaurant sources product in Canada.
-
There were two houses damaged by fireworks in the county next to mine.
And the goalie for an NHL team the Columbus (Ohio) Blue Jackets was killed by an errant fireworks mortar......
There was also an ambulance & fire truck in my neighborhood - but I do not know the circumstances. It may have been another attempted murder by the house cats - they are becoming more common, I hear.

:o
They did everything right and it still exploded :( I hope the people who stockpiled the fireworks get jail time.

I hope they put this moron away for a very long time.
At least he lost all the money he invested in purchasing the fireworks. It is a beginning.

On the Facebook page of a rescue group, Peace and Paws, that I follow they shared this today.
“I don’t want a dog that drools.”
An actual comment on an application for Callie, so I sent this picture for reference.
Callie not only drools when she plays and gets excited, she likes to cover herself in it.
Full disclosure of course.
I’m not sure why they didn’t email us back 😬😉

One more...
-
FOUR!!!!
-
My work here is done.
-
Good night, friends.
-
The daily thunderstorms have come in, and the rains were fairly spectacular. Traffic problems throughout the city.
-
I'm watching another film for some unknown reason, other than I've never seen it: The Blue Bird with Shirley Temple. I guess it was supposed to be her Wizard of Oz. All I can think of while watching it as, thank goodness for Judy Garland.
-
I keep hearing Kaye Ballard imitating Hedda Hopper on the Decline and Fall ... Cole Porter album. "Shirley 'God, isn't she lovely?' Temple ..."
-
Finished with my viewing - watched two-thirds of a terrible movie. Will stick it out to the end, but tomorrow.
-
I met two friends in the East Village ( lower Manhattan) for Vietnamese food.
-
They were both appalled I had never tried it
-
I had clay pot ginger chicken
-
And some kind of vegetable broth
-
I didn’t recognize any of the vegetables
-
It was very nice
-
Before I joined them though was the tire fiasco
-
I got in the car to drive into the city and noticed that my tire inflation warning signal was on
-
So I walked around the van and saw my fron5 right tire was low
-
There is a gas station with a free air pump right down the block so I went there
-
When I knelt down to take off the cap I could see a nail imbedded with the treads
-
A nice young man who saw me struggling to stand up ( my knees aren’t what they were) kindly filled the tire for me and I headed up to the BJs tire center to get it plugged
-
When I arrived ther3 there were no cars in the bay and no customers and two employees
-
Another woman walked in and said she had called about a battery and they had her pull right in while they sent me back out to my car to see if I had the tire paperwork
-
Then the other guy went out and looked at the tire and came back to tell me that they couldn’t p,ug it because of the location of the nail
-
Then he went on break
-
By time he came back there were 3 more customers and the other guy was still working in battery ladies car
-
The employee seemed surprised to see me and reminded me he couldn’t plug the tire
-
I reminded him I still had a faulty tire so apparently I would need a new one
-
Then He checked to see what everyone else wanted
-
I wanted to punch him in the head but I kept that sentiment to myself
-
Finally he went back to my paperwork and said there was a warranty based on mileage and age and then went back out to my car to check the mileage
-
Then he came back and did some high level trigonometry and calculus and whatever but 15 minutes later advised I would get $33.87 credit towards a new tire
-
The new tire was $193. 98
-
The tire it was replacing had only cost $123.99 two years ago and I expressed surprise that the price had leaped from $124 to $194 in two years
-
He corrected me to let me know the prices were actually $123.99 and $193.98
-
I also wanted to kick him in the knees
-
I likewise kept these desires hidden
-
Since I also wants to go into the city and meet my friends as I had started to do 45 minutes earlier and was still less than a mile from my house
-
So he applied the credit and I paid for the replacement tire
-
Then he told me they didn’t have any in stock but he ordered one and it should be in Wednesday
-
Or maybe Thursday
-
So without screaming or strangling him or anything I asked if he thought he could put the spare tire on my car
-
So he called the other guy who was still in the garage and that guy brought my car into the bay and put the donut on and put the flat in the back
-
I asked how much for the tire change and was told no charge and that he would call when the new tire arrived
-
I had started to head out at 2:30
-
Now it was 4:15
-
I handed the guy who actually changed the tire $10 and thanked him and headed out
-
Fortunately I had been texting with my friends so they knew we were no longer meeting at 4
-
I arrived finally at 5:30 and was quite pleased to find free street parking only two blocks away from the restaurant
-
The day got much better thereafter
-
After the dinner we walked back to Van Leeuwen ‘s for icecream
-
I had praline butter cake and vegan banana pudding flavored ice cream
-
I gotta tell you.
-
I don't have to go to work today, because it's the observed holiday. Fine with me. :) Instead, I'm going to my sister's, and my mom's coming over too, and we're going to play Scrabble...not Phase 10! I KNOW that my mom will win. That's her game.
Have a good day, all!
Well, the family went to my sister's house and we had nachos for lunch.
-
Since we all made our own, mine was pretty good and quite tasty. :)
-
Then, we played Scrabble, and as usual, my mom won.
-
I came in fourth out of five, so I wasn't last. ;)
-
No one embarrassed themselves, though...it's all good.
-
Even though we had nachos, after it was all done, I was kind of hungry, so I went to the local Happy Teriyaki (http://happyteriyaki5.com/teriyaki-tumwater-restaurant-wa/?mid=menu8) and had my usual, the Love Salad, which is pretty darned good.
-
Then, I came home and have been watching some YouTube videos.
-
And now, I'm here.
-
And since I'm finally here, let's turn the page to...
-
6!!!!!!
-
Now, I need to ketchup on all of today's posts.
-
The Costco here has also just added self check outs. I always thought that they should do an 8 and less cash like they do at grocery stories. Although most people seem to buy full carts.
They just added them here in Tumwater, too, so it must be a corporate decision...finally!

Oh, no! That's terrible! All of it, but especially the death of the goalie. :(
-
I can't even believe that some states let people set off their own fireworks. Or that anybody would want to do that.
The biggest shock is that anyone would want to do that when they live in a high fire area.
Either people just don't care, or they don't think that it could happen to them...or both. >:(
-
Now, I need to ketchup on all of today's posts.
Which I now have.
-
Just had to share. :)
-
I am glad you are okay, Ginny.
-
Vixmom, I hope you got that gentleman’s name. I would certainly want to nominate him for Employee of the Year!
-
Goodnight!
-
Tomorrow, it's back to work. Sigh. ::)

;)
