Title: JUMPING THE GUN
Post by: bk on May 26, 2005, 11:58:10 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you know many things for having read the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - it will be quite some time before they come home because, as we all know, cows never jump the gun.

You need a docent piece of bamboo for effective Bastinado. That should bring moisture to the eyes of DR Jed.  Lovely song by the Eagles.  "Bastinado"

Earl Grant had a lovely version of "The House Of Bamboo".
Rosemary Clooney and Guy Mitchell (understandably) prefered "The House Of Singing Bamboo".

TOTD: Not sure what we will watch tonight.  Maybe "Japanese Story".

CD: I've been 50 years late in discovering the world of Joni James. Her voice is a delight.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DR ARNOLD M. BROCKMAN!!

In my DVD player:  nothing

In my CD player:  nothing

In my VCR (and the reason that nothing is in my DVD or CD players):  a tape to tape tonight's Seattle Storm women's basketball game that my niece and I are actually going to!  She loves the Storm (I've mentioned that bit of information before ::)) and got a 10-ticket package, so this is one of the games that I have to take her to.  MAYBE we'll be seen on TV...but not very likely.  The seats are somewhere low, but in the corner behind the Storm benches.  They don't usually show that too often, but you never know.

Anyway, we're going to leave for Seattle either late in the morning or very early in the afternoon.  Today is also the Northwest Folklife Festival (http://www.nwfolklife.org/) at the Seattle Center, which is where the Key Arena is, which is where the Seattle Storm play.  It will be VERY CROWDED!!

So, I'm off to bed and a long sleep.

BK, great Broadwayworld and Playbill announcements!  And nice pictures!!

Dear Jane, good thoughts and hugs to you.

I'm listening to the OBC of Guys and Dolls right now. Stubby Kaye is singing Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat.

It's a half day at work so I won't be listening to much today. I'm leaving around 11:45am. We have a full weekend ahead. Anthony's show closes on Sunday and he's preparing to leave for Virginia on Monday morning around 6am. We have laundry to do, packing, a closing night party on Sunday and we have to sqeeze some down time in there too, just to be alone for a few minutes before he's gone for six weeks.

That being said, once I leave the office I probably won't be around much until Monday.

HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MR. BROCKMAN Senior!

Readers Digest, Guy Lombardo, Rogers Peet, golf, galoshes, Ovaltine

Rogers, Peet & Co. was founded Nov. 6, 1874 through the merger of the clothing firms of Marvin N. Rogers and Charles Bostwick Peet (1837-1902). Rogers, Peet featured men's and boys' wearing apparel (suits, coats, jackets, pants, shirts, hats, neckties, underwear, gloves, socks, belts (you name it!)), then much later added women's apparel (coats, slacks, sweaters). The main store at 42nd Street had entrances both at 16 E. 42nd and at 479-481 5th Ave. This was the final surviving Rogers, Peet store, which closed in the mid-1980s.

Good morning, all! Back down to the recording office today, and I have no plans beyond that.

DRGeorge, thanks for the program notes on MEASURE FOR MEASURE; as with most director's notes, I like to see what's been done before deciding the thoughts on paper actually end up on the stage.  Stephen Hanan, of the original Broadway casat for CATS, wrote an interesting musical version of MEASURE FOR MEASURE in the late 1970s called TROUBLE IN PARADISE, as I recall, and set in a military basearound 1910.  There were a couple of wonderful songs in it.

DRJane, my heart bleeds for your loss.  I know how much Bogie meant to you and what affection and care you gave him.

Car CD player: A Year With Frog and Toad again.  We're ladsitting today, once more.  At least we've weaned them off of Tarzan for a moment.

DVD player: Der Brucer was watching Spy Game yesterday, a Robert Redford/Brad Pitt teaming.  Then he watched it again and listened to the commentary track.  Snoozey.

DRs Elmore and Tomovoz: When can we expect comparisons of your pain meds?  And the loopy side effects?  Not that I ever want to be where you two have been, but sometimes these things are interesting and worth keeping in mind.

iPod:  Pippin OCR  --  This recording has always been a bit of an oddball.  With its lack of a synopsis and with almost all of the Fosse theatrical influences stripped away, one would really have no idea of what was happening on stage when listening to it (at least, that was my experience years ago, before I saw the show.)  Also, the cast is all over the place as far as staying on key or sustaining notes is concerned (and I'm convinced that Jill Clayburgh's "Kind Of Woman" was spliced together from several takes as she seems to never take a breath throughout long stretches of the song--try singing along with her, note for note, to see what I mean.)

The thing is, the recording plays so damn well!  It is one of a few cast recordings that I can truly play again and again and again.  The tunes are beyond catchy, the cast is fun to listen to and the recording overall evokes memories of a time when I first took an active interest in Broadway and Musical Theatre.  This one will always be a top favorite of mine.

Friday Media Check:

CD - SPAMALOT (OCR) I've had this for two weeks and have yet to play it. Too many other irons in the fire.

DVD - DIE HARD 2
         THE BEST OF EVERYTHING

DVR - last Sunday's DEADWOOD
         last Wednesday's LOST finale
         last night's CSI
THE MAIDS (Glenda Jackson/American Film Theater)

My goal is to get ALL of this watched during this holiday weekend. Let's see if it happens. Definitely up first will be LOST. I've had to do a lot of dodging spoilers all over the place on the internet and in magazines for the last few days so as not to get too much information before I see it.

In the DVD PLayer: The Ten Commandments, disc 2. (I'm up for a voice over gig and the director wants a vaguely Charleton Heston sound)

MEDIA CHECK:

CD:  Dark Shadows - and yes DR DANISE I know why you want to see Lynhurst....take YOUR camera!

VHS:  Dark Shadows Volume 27

DVD:  lots of surprises from DR MBARNUM including:

MURDER AT THE (not Radio City) MUSIC HALL - featuring Miss Vera Ralston's last skating on film (she hung up her skates to concentrate on acting at the behest of Republic Studios head, a sugar daddy, Herbert J. Yates), William Marshall (the last Mr Ginger Rogers), and Miss Nancy Kelly (doing acting a LOT like she would do a decade hence in THE BAD SEED).

SPRING SONG - a Hong Kong rock and roll musical about a tomboy and her friend a lovely singer who each love the boy who loves the other....only the boys really don't....the girls learn that by just being themselves, they can get the boy they want.  But with some American music in the background.

LADIES FIRST - another Hong Kong movie about a couple of girls who also like the other's boyfriend...with some swim trunks, night clubs, American background music, and a little sex in it.

Others to follow.

Oh my.  I just did a Google images search for Cal Bolder and came up with DR MBarnum's interview (http://www.horror-wood.com/boulder.htm) accompanied by this and other pictures.

It is curious that the website misspells his name throughout, even on picture file names.  Of course, in the body of the article MBarnum never makes such an egregious error.

Thus saith the DOCENT.

Our office closes at 3 today. So generous.
I must then hie to Mt. Kisco, NY for a wedding. The guy who dragged us up to Montreal for his bachelor bash is tying the knot today at 5:30.

Tomorrow I will hit the road early to help a friend move to Vermont. He and  his gal are moving into a Buddhist retreat. My gal and I will spend the rest of the weekend up there and in New Hampshire.

Thus, I must post all now before I succumb to errancy and truancy.

Okay here is the lost scene FROM LOST that was broadcast on Good Morning America (for DR George and anyone else who wants to know).

It features Charlie and Claire.  And starts with the french woman eating an egg raw.

Charlie (to claire): She (french woman) is nuts.  She tried to blow my head off in the jungle for no reason ...  She says she heard whispers.  Doesn't mean anything.

Claire (to Charlie):  When ethan took me ... however I got away.  I knew they'd be back.

Charlie (to claire): Is that why you didn't name the baby! ...

***
Not too earth shattering.  But sort of interesting i guess.

Sad news about Bogie.  He was loved.

DR MBarnum:  Your mention of the "late Cal Bolder" came as somewhat of a shock in yesterday's notes.  I didn't know that he had passed away.

Oh, yes DR WFO, you must have been gone from the board at that time. Mr. Bolder was diagnosed with cancer last September and passed away in January. I miss chatting with him...he was such a nice guy and he was so looking forward to attending some of the celebrity and Star Trek conventions that he was beginning to get invites to.

Hopefully Filmfax will be running my interview with him soon.

The Story of Three Loves
Drama, 2hrs 2min
MGM--1953
Music by Miklos Rozsa

This anthology film tells three stories of love involving the passengers of an ocean liner at sea. In the first, "The Jealous Lover," James Mason plays Charles Coudray, a well-known ballet director. When someone asks Coudray why he staged his masterpiece, "Astarte," only once, he tells the story of Paula Woodward (Moira Shearer), a superb dancer he found practicing in his theater. He was awestruck by her technique and her beauty, but he discovered that she had a secret -- due to a cardiac condition, she has been forbidden to dance too strenuously, as it could tax her heart and eventually kill her. Charles urges Paula to perform for him, so he may use her movements to choreograph his next great work; she agrees, but the exertion proves too much for her and she dies. He arranges for the work she inspired to be performed only once, in hopes that she will somehow see it from on high.

In the second segment, "Mademoiselle," Tommy (Ricky Nelson) is a 12-year-old boy travelling with his French governess and tutor (Leslie Caron); she's tired of spending her days watching over a child, and he'd like to get away from Teacher for a while. Mrs. Pennicott (Ethel Barrymore), a older woman who happens to be a witch, hears Tommy wishing he could be a grown-up, and she grants his request: suddenly Tommy is a grown man (played by Farley Granger), but only for the next four hours. The Governess meets the mysterious stranger Tommy has become, and soon they fall in love.

In the final segment, "Equilibrium," Kirk Douglas plays Pierre Narval, a high-wire artist who retired from performing after his partner died while performing a trapeze act, an accident Pierre blames on himself. He begins to reconsider his decision when he saves the life of Nina (Pier Angeli), a woman who attempted to drown herself; her husband died in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II, and she feels she is to blame for his death. Their shared fatalism equals fearlessness in Pierre's eyes, and he teaches Nina the art of the trapeze; however, when he begins to fall in love with her, he's no longer so certain that he wants her to risk her life. "The Jealous Lover" and "Equilibrium" were directed by Gottfried Reinhardt, while "Mademoiselle" was directed by Vincente Minnelli. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA - I just don't LIKE the pretentious composer, or his attitude, but I love the story, and the reviews of the show, the music, and the performances may just change my mind.  Time will tell.

DRJRand54, I'm sorry you've been so vocal in your dislike for someone I'd guess you don't know. What you don't like about Adam is the feeling you've gotten from whatever media you've read or seen.  I don't know Adam well, but I think Adam is a good guy, very humble and not at all pretentious.  I wish him well.  I ddn't expect LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA to take off as it has, and I'm very happy for him.  FLOYD COLLINS was an amazing show and deserved more attention than it got in New York.

From what I've been perusing on the various and sundried message boards this morning, the Light On The Piazza CD is the Holy Grail of cast recordings this week.  It seems to be sold-out everywhere.  Who woulda thought?  Amazon informed me last night that my copy has been shipped, so I expect to have it in hand on Tuesday.  I've already heard some of the score and I am in love with the opening number.

Still waiting for mine to ship... guess that's what I get for taking the free shipping.  I've always liked Guettel's music, and I liked ...Piazza in its Seattle workshop, but I never thought it'd be this popular.

That's funny about the name Jinx. I did FOREVER PLAID for some months, and even though it's one of my all-time favorite theatrical experiences (both as a performer and as an audience member), the name didn't ring any bells (a Kander and Ebb reference) until bk mentioned it earlier.

DRJRand 54, I make no claims to authentic opinions, I just don't think you should claim to hate a person you don't know.  I may hate the work of someone I don't know, while liking them personally; and I may like someone's work while disliking them!  I mention no names in either example!

I've only once met Jason Robert Brown, whose PARADE I liked very much, and I found him quite friendly; I don't feel I know him.  My BABES colleague Tom Murray worked with Jason on THE LAST FIVE YEARS, and he likes Jason and his wife immensely.  I'm not sure I'd say that either Adam or Jason produces "inane" work, because I think they're both too intelligent for that.   Clearly, you're not a fan of their writing and that's fine by me, but I question anything "inane" about FLOYD COLLINS; it was quite stunning and moving.

I'm no fan of either Mr. Guettel or Mr. Brown, based on the few things I've heard (much more in the case of Mr. Brown).  I'm sure JRB is very nice, but on the couple of occasions I've had to converse with him, I have not found that to be the case, and I must say that at the Disney/ASCAP workshop where he sat on the panel, he came off as a loud-mouthed egomaniac (although, he WAS an amusing loud-mouthed egomaniac).

I should listen to Floyd Collins - I've only heard a few songs from it (if you can describe them as songs).  I've listened to a couple of samples from Light in the Piazza, and they were okay.

Good Afternoon!

Back in Fairfax.  The traffic northbound on 95 was surprisingly light.  There were a few unexplained bottlenecks along the way, but, all in all, I made the trip in the time it usually takes.  The southbound traffic, however...  YIKES!  I didn't spot any accidents, but it had to be very heavily congested from at least Springfield to Fredericksburg - almost 50 miles!  *And according to the traffic reports on the radio, everyone seems to be heading south this weekend.  The northbound traffic on the Bay Bridge was very light between 2:00 and 4:00.  In fact, the traffic reporter "on the road" was making loops of the bridge - "This is my fourth trip through the toll booths...  This is my sixth trip through the tolls booths...  There are only 3 cars in front of me at the toll booth..."  -What a job!?!?!?

Steve and I ended up at Stella's for lunch.  Neither of us had been back there in while - and it's basically "our" restaurant.  We both had the lamb burger for lunch.  The burger came topped with grilled prosciutto and goat cheese.  Quite tasty!  And then for our "cake", we split a very generous serving of tiramisu.*

I also peeked into the kitchen to say Hi to Stella and exchange big hugs.  She's doing well, and smiling as always.  However, she will be taking a good chunk of time off later this summer for knee replacement surgery - possibly double-knee replacement.  -Just like Edwina had last summer. -And it was at Stella's original location that I met Edwina.  In any case... It was great seeing here again.  *And I have a feeling that Stella had something to do with the generosity of the serving of tiramisu.

:)

It was a very nice birthday lunch, and Steve will be coming up to DC sometime in the next few weeks, and we'll probably head to the Carlyle Grand to have a proper birthday dinner.  -And the Flourless Chocolate Waffle for dessert, of course!

I just happened to check out the new-ish playbillarts.com a few minutes ago, and came across the news that pianist, Ruth Laredo, has died.

Ms. Laredo's recordings of the complete Rachmaninov piano works and the Scriabin piano sonatas provided me with many hours of listening and wonder when I first started studying piano.  And the fact that she was among the first pianists - man or woman - to record the complete works of either composer was something of a landmark at the time.  She also made frequent visits to Richmond for the summer concert series at the University of Richmond.

When Sony finally released her Rachmaninov recordings on CD a couple of years ago, I made sure to purchase the complete set.  They may not be considered definitive renditions, but very musical and intelligent.  When I travel back to Richmond next week, I will be sure to pull her Rachmaninov discs out of storage.

I assume that it was just used as a playout in the cinemas. I think the same was so of "Alfie" with Cher's version in the USA and Cilla Black's in the UK & OZ.

Well, this is very vexing, DR TomovOz!!!  The song "Jean" was nominated for the Oscar for Best Song.  And I'd always thought the Academy required that the song be a featured part of a film to be eligible.

I have to wonder what it's all about (, Alfie???) that the song has somehow disappeared.

I've "Googled" the issue and most references call the song the "title song."  And it seems to me I remember a title vocal.

A possibility is that the song was a separate element from the ones they've used to issue the film on home video...something that has either been damaged or which the studio had to remove because it didn't have video rights to the song.

Whatever the reason, it's very vexing, indeed, because it mars the history of the film.  I wonder if our very own, and BK's dear friend, Nick Redman (or Bk, himself) could shed some light on this issue for us.

Indeed Ron - I thought maybe the video release had just cut the "playout" at the film's end. I was quite disappointed when the DVD did not have even a few bars of the lyrics - yet the "Extra" included used the song over the trailer.

I was always amazed that "My Wishing Doll" from "Hawaii" was ever nominated. My search for a copy of that song continues.

I can't remember where "Born Free" was used - over the end credits I guess.

Great book title but it begs the question, will there be a sequel called, Fast Forward?

Just got an e-mail from young Caitlynne's mother - you might remember young Caitlynne performed my song Annie at a big competition against many people and won.  Here's part two:

Bruce, your song “Annie” is kicking butt here in Canada.  With Caitlynne winning here in Calgary, she got sent up to the province capital to represent Calgary in the Provincial Music Festival for 16 and under against 23 other competitors from across the province.  She won!!!

Congrats to Caitlynne.  There's now one more competition, so let's send her most excellent vibes and xylophones, shall we?

I'm supposed to get a tape of it soon.

It couldn't hurt, Jane!  Actually, I'm not really worried about losing my job, but as DH Richard said, "If you don't stand up for yourself, who will?"  My feeling is, if people like me whose opinions (I'm pretty sure) are respected by the management don't speak up, we're really in trouble.

Small world DRCILLALIZ.

I met Brent when we did a production of PARTY in Indianapolis, he was also a tennis pro on the Northside of Indy...and had a few "clients" on the side which I discovered when he left his pager at the theatre one night.  He then joined the army and then he met Michael Peterson, I think.

He was in Indy last summer to do NAKED BOYS SINGING and included his Court TV appearance in his bio....and I asked him about it.....whew!

Small World indeed. Did you see "The Staircase?" I can't remember if it was Showtime or which movie channel had it, maybe Sundance Channel. It was a 6 part series on the case. There was a lot about Brent in it. Much more than on Dateline.

I know David from the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.  He's a great guy. He really believed in Peterson's innocense. The verdict really hit him hard.

I'll be seeing Putnam County Spelling Bee this coming Wednesday. I'm looking forward to it, but I have to keep the hype out of my mind. I don't want to be disappointed. I do like Bill Finn's work (I don't know him) so I think this should be quite fun.

Yes, unless there is some unforseen problem, there will be a number from Spelling Bee on the Tonys. The pre-show (different from the Red Carpet, obviously) only available beginning at 7pm EST at

http://www.tonyawards.com/

will show the awarding of some of the less high profile awards, design, costume, possibly direction and choreography. That leaves more room in the 3 hour CBS broadcast for what they consider major awards and numbers from the nominated shows.

I'll be seeing Doubt on Tuesday and Pillowman either Thursday or Friday. It's like people seeing all the nominated movies before the Oscars, only more expensive. When I see Doubt and Pillowman I will have seen all the major nominations, IIRC. Then on to the Tonys on June 5th.

As to how much Brent gets around - I don't think we want to know!  Once during PARTY he mentioned that a client had suffered a heart attack during a session.....and when I looked askance.....it assured me it was one of his "tennis" clients at the Club....not one of the others.

I am still very worried about LA CAGE. Les Cagelles have come and gone, the music director has not been totally committed to the show (she was a replacement for the original music director, and I'm not sure she really wanted to do the show) and has left us several nights with just a no talent pianist to struggle along with. The entire enterprise has been too slapdash for my taste, and I will say with firmness that I will not be auditioning for their production of SEUSSICAL next season. I'll be trying some other theater troupes in the area. One's doing OLIVER! in the fall, another KISS ME KATE. I may try my luck with them.

LOST was excellent. Seven minutes in, I jumped out of my seat and hollered at what I was seeing. There were two more "jump" moments for me in the show, too, and wonderful cliffhangers to keep us breathless until fall. Great show!

DRMATTH - I have been involved in a couple of productions like you are going through.  And those are the theatres I don't go back to either.  There are too many who make it an enjoyable experience for the actors, staff, AND audience.

One of my goals as a director is to get the good people back - and I usually do.  And people who start with me at the Playhouse usually audition for me again and again....and when they get into shows with other directors, they let me know how "different" it is...LOL.

On a whim, I stopped at my local DVD store and hit another mother lode: Cincinatti Kid, Tom Horn, Never So Few, Dead Ringers (the Cronenberg film, newly released by Warners), first two seasons of Quincy (in one set), St. Ives, and Kansas City Bombers with Raquel Welch.

DR Ron Pulliam - Sorry if I caused you some gastric distress.  It really was a tasty lamb burger.  Just one very thing slice of prosciutto on top, and a dollop of goat cheese.  It really was quite good.  Just think of it as a Mediterranean version of a bacon-cheeseburger.

And Stella's tiramisu is one of the best I've ever had.  Not too heavy, not too Kahlua-y, and not too rich (tasting).  And we did have a "pause" after finishing our burgers before tackling the dessert.

At dinner tonight BK also bestowed on me two Theatre Worlds of which he had doubles and which I was missing in my collection.  They were a delight to thumb through...the earlier ones did things like cover the Chicago theatre season , the summer stock theatre, and covered shows that didn't make it to Broadway.

I must say though I was looking at some Jose Ferrer shows of Volpone and The Alchemist and it was distressing to see that a theatre publication could not spell Ben Jonson's name correctly...spelling it the traditional "Johnson" way.  Tsk!  Tsk!
