Well, you've read the notes, the notes praised the boys in the band, and now it is time for you to post until the cows in the band come home.

I did indeed sleep very well last night. I had a strange dream about the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company playing at a Broadway theatre, traveling up to Bosdton, and then returning to Broadway for another couple of performances before returning to England. I don't know if I were an audience member or part of the touring company.

When I was in high school, I wished I lived closer to New York to see the D'Oyly Carte company on one of their Broadway appearances.

I have an appointment this morning in North Augusta for some needed dental surgery (am getting some implants).

My cousin Debra is taking me and bringing me home. I opted for sedation.  It's one thing to have folks poking around in my mouth and quite another thing entirely when they may be digging around.

DR Elmore, you never saw the D'Oyly Carte live? I think it was in my first year at school, their tour brought them through Cleveland and I saw The Mikado and Iolanthe.

I had earlier seen their filmed-on-stage version of The Mikado during my senior year in high school, which I thrilled to and went back to a couple of times.

I realized something else last night about the Oscars and it is the glut of choices out there. I feel overwhelmed by the vast number of movies that open every week. Rogerebert.com reviews about a dozen titles every single week. Then how many more from the vault are offered up on DVD or YouTube? It’s like all of the operas available on metopera.com last year or the full-length videos of musicals on YouTube. Or pirated cast recordings. Or …

I have too many favorite orchestrations, but I'll list a few here:
Otto Langey & Victor Herbert: Babes in Toyland
Harold Sanford & Victor Herbert: Eileen
Frank Saddler: Have A Heart
Robert Russell Bennett: Show Boat, Oklahoma!, My Fair Lady, Camelotr
Phil Lang: My Fair Lady, Camelot, Li'l Abner, Hello, Dolly!
Hans Spialek: Anything Goes, Pal Joey, Babes in Arms
Don Walker: She Loves Me, Carousel, Greenwillow, Cabaret, Fiddler on the Roof
Ted Royal: Brigadoon
Sid Ramin & Irwin Kostal: West Side Story, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
Red Ginzler: Bye Bye Birdie, Wildcat
Red Ginzler & Sid Ramin: Gypsy
Hershy Kay: Candide, On the Town, On the 20th Century, 110 in the Shade
Jonathan Tunick: A Little Night Music, Goodtime Charley, Sweeney Todd, Follies, The Grass Harp
Michael Starobin: Rags, Assassins (Recording)
Title: Re: THE BOYS IN THE BAND
Post by: elmore3003 on March 29, 2022, 01:16:47 PM
I will also bring up what I consider the worst work of my two favorites:
Robert Russell Bennett: Bells Are Ringing; the film orchestrations are so right, Bennett just doesn't get it.

Jonathan Tunick: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum: his work is too tasteful and it misses the bawdy, vulgar, brassy burlesque of the original work.

DR Ron I hope your implant surgery went well.

I was very nervous, and everyone was reassuring and explained everything that would be done.  The sedation was via IV.  The funny thing is, I remember the doctor talking to me, and then the IV was started, and the next thing I knew it was all over.  They wheeled me into a room to allow sedation to wear off and then I was done.   I was totally unaware of them doing a thing, and I have experienced no pain and no swelling.

To put it frankly, I am dazzled by the experience.

As much as I love the OBC of "A Little Night Music", I have to say that the sound recording on the British cast album is far better, with the orchestrations just sounding amazing.  The vocal performances are just okay, but the sound of the orchestra is wonderful.

Another musical that defies description:

Perpetual Sunshine & The Ghost Girls is a through-composed musical centered on the exploitation of workers in the face of a national health crisis. The score combines the aesthetics of 1920's and 2020's music to tell the story of the women who changed the face of American labor laws after being poisoned on the job by the United States Radium Corporation.

I wonder if it'll be difficult to get a CD player put into my new car.

Anyway, on the trip and back today, I listed to one of my newest acquisitions the Japanese cast recording (https://castalbums.org/recordings/-2014-Japanese-Cast/28044/) to Mamma Mia! ;D

I also recently also got the French cast recording (https://castalbums.org/recordings/Mamma-Mia-2011-Original-Paris-Cast/22336), so maybe I'll listen to that tomorrow or Thursday.

I KNOW that we do not have that many young men in the cast...so far, there have only been two at our two rehearsals. :-\

I also know that they've been trying to get more into the cast.

I thought Ron wrote that the sedation was by TV.  Yeah, a couple of episodes of THE GOOD DOCTOR would be enough for me.

Ron, was this to remove the old, or to implant the new?

I just rewatched the first hour of the Oscars.  Strangely, they had the same winners.

There was really beautiful young man who was a presenter, but I didn’t catch his name thefirst time when I watched in live.

I now know is name is Jacob Elordi.  I don ‘ know if he is as tall as he looked, or the girl presenter was really short.

Back from a not bad dress/tech - sound and projection issues to work out, but it ran very smoothly.

Nope.  That's from the IBDB listing (https://www.ibdb.com/broadway-production/mamma-mia-12925) of the Broadway production.
