The alarm rang at 5:45, and I ignored it, Around 6:35 I roused myself at the pleadings of Stella and Thatch who wanted breakfast. Then the computer was behaving badly this morning, and I am finally online, about an hour after my usual time, I'm happy it's Sunday.

In 1980, one Saturday afternoon, while IU worked at the Drama Book shop, a portly gentleman bought the last copy of the vocal score to Jerome Kern’s “The Cat and the Fiddle.” I had been coveting it, but even on my book shop discount, I couldn’t afford it. I knew the person with him - I don’t remember who it was now - and he introduced us, It was Bruce Pomahac, an orchestrator whose name I recognized from the recording of Richard Rodgers’ Columbia University show, “Fly With Me,” which we sold in thew shop.

In 1987, we met again at the Library of Congress dress rehearsal for that evening’s concert, “Babes in Arms,” restored by John McGlinn, and some time after that, we began seeing each other socially, and soon Bruce was calling me into the offices of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, where he was the director of music, on various projects: cleaning up and finishing the materials for “Babes in Arms” and “The Boys from Syracuse,” a new orchestration for “Annie Get Your Gun,” a ballet based on “Oklahoma!” and more. In 2001, when I restored “Dearest Enemy” fort the Richard Rodgers Centenary, I asked Bruce to compose some dramatic underscoring that I needed to fill out the Act Two finale. As soon as a recording I had worked on was released, he either came to my place or I went to his for some dinner and a listen. He loved my last two, “Dearest Enemy” and “Roberta,” but he was always in my corner cheering for me.  In 2017, when City Center Encores! produced Cole Porter’s “The New Yorkers,” which I co-orchestrated with Josh Clayton, he flew in from Milwaukee to see it.

Milwaukee? Yes, when he retired from Rodgers & Hammerstein, he packed up , left Manhattan and a lovely apartment overlooking the Hudson at 42nd Street to return to his family in Wisconsin.

For years we traveled to Ohio Light Opera in Wooster, Ohio. He paid for the flights and I took care of the rental car  and acted as his chauffeur, as we terrorized Wooster and environs. One year, a bottle of Listerine broke in my travel bag, and I spent the weekend smelling like mouthwash. I think our last jaunt was a trip to New Jersey to see Bruce Kimmel’s musical, The Brain from Planet X,” a show I had orchestrated, and which he loved.

For years I teased Bruce that he had got the last copy of something I really wanted. In the late 1990s or early 2000s, after he had been working at the St Louis Muny, he handed me a wrapped package with the comment "I stole this from the Muny library." I opened the package. It contained a pristine copy of "The Cat and the Fiddle" vocal score.

Goodbye, dear Bruce! I always thought/hoped that we'd end up together on the porch of an old musicians' retirement home, rocking and laughing at the world, which is a sadder place without you but Heaven will be a lot happier with your good humor and enormous heart.

Today at church is "Homecoming".  Lots of folks will have family memberrs there who are from out of town.

I am sorry to miss it, but my hip is too unpredictable in pain levels to risk sitting in a pew.  I am managing pain with applications of Absorbine Veterinary Liniment.  It truly helps but cannot cure.

The opinions of some family with whom I dined last night is that my symptoms sound like sciatica.  No cure for that, but it can be managed.

Won't know a thing until my appointment on May 17th which I set up Friday evening.

Richard and I had a big day Friday.  We went to our county board of elections to vote in Tuesday's primary, then to Sharonville (Cincinnati 'burb) to see if one of our favorite lunch places survived the pandemic.  They did, indeed, and I thoroughly enjoyed my tuna melt.  From there, we found our way to a La Z Boy furniture gallery where we ordered ourselves new recliners for the family room.  We MIGHT have them by Christmas...

I took the B I G  mirror over to the house and put it on the mantel in the family room.....and there is a jonquil in a clear bud vase on the white fireplace in the living room.

The house was featured again today on the local TV show of homes for sale - so maybe....this week.

I'm beginning to sound like DR ELMORE.

I have indulged in the slowest start to the day possible, because I’m in the throes of one of these colds that COULD be allergies but I always think it’s a cold anyway, and why the HELL not? Actually, I really do think cold, because I ran myself ragged this week, especially with way too little sleep Thursday through Saturday. My defenses were down, and thank goodness I don’t have to do anything till Thursday this week because I need this collapse.

DR ChasSmith, our last stop Friday was Graeter's.  We had ice cream, of course, and I brought home 2 cinnamon squares and 2 cheese crowns.  They've changed the cinnamon squares, replacing the powdered sugar with drizzled icing on top - not the same.  Cheese crowns are as good as ever, but I removed most of the heavy white icing.  Richard did not and wished he had.

The Sharonville restaurant is just a diner called The Athenian - gyros, burgers, sandwiches, etc.  It's on Reading Road, just south of Sharon Road.

The recipe on the box didn’t work, so I had to improvise a new filling (apricot-coconut instead of pudding that never set). I didn’t add any fresh banana.

Is that why it looks like there is coconut on the frosting?

With a bit of googling I found the following:

As common as vanilla may be as a flavor nowadays, there was once a point in history when it was a rare commodity, according to Scientific American. That's because, at the time, things that were flavored "vanilla" had to be made with actual vanilla beans, or, at the very least, extract of vanilla beans. Of course, that hasn't been the case since the turn of the 20th century, which is when chemists invented "vanillin," which can be manufactured without a lick of actual vanilla bean. Rather, Scientific American reports that vanillin can be "synthesized variously from pine bark, clove oil, rice bran, and lignin." And since that time, "of the roughly 18,000 metric tons of vanilla flavor produced annually, about 85% is vanillin synthesized from the petrochemical precursor guaiacol," with the rest from lignin.

Back from a very good show. Very elderly crowd, so very little reaction to act one, although they were clearly enjoying it - but they suddenly woke up and came alive for the wrestling match and then all of act two they were very vocal - weird. Perhaps the medication wore off :) Sandy Bainum was with us, and two people who graduated high school in my class were there.

Looking forward to Jeff Harnar's forthcoming Sondheim tribute album. Although it sounds like it may be going the way of Betty Buckley's "jazz reinvention" approach. But it's all good.

There is no pass-through behind the stage, so if we don't enter from one side and exit the other that we need to be on for our next entrance, we have to go outside and around the building. ::)

Oh good, more fear mongering, just what everyone needs. I mean, they were completely wrong about the variant that's been going around - four weeks ago they said it was going to be much worse than Omicron - well, no, it isn't, wasn't, and won't be. That was supposed to happen last week. Funny how silent all the fear mongering pundits have been about the non-event - now they've adjusted the fear mongering to summer - it never ends. This sentence especially makes my blood boil: "Individuals could “have been misdiagnosed as having COVID-19” when some of them may have actually had TB because of the similarity of symptoms, the agency said."
