Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of more bad movies, and now it is time for you to post until the more bad cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: CHERUBIC!
-
Very nice reviews of the new book, BK! I'm a little more than halfway through, myself.

Good morning to all.

I haven’t received my copy yet. But I’m looking forward to reading it.

Good morning, all!

I did not sleep well last night. Annabelle and Thatch were wit me most of the night, Thattch abandoned me around 3:30, and Stella took over. Unlike Thatch who finds a nice spot and goes to sleep, Stella insists you acknowledge her and pet her until she decides ewhen she wants to sleep.
-
This morning, neither Annabelle nor Thatch is eating. This troubles me.
-
Good morning, all.
-
I would have loved Walter Matthau as Harry. Have to think of current actors of that age.

We have ugly weather forecasts for later today, in the very week that tornados ripped through western Connecticut exactly four years ago. I am counting on history not repeating itself.
I also have a busy day otherwise, which includes the annual service check and maintenance from the people who service the furnace.
And so it goes.
Monday. And all that that entails.

I've had this answer ready since reading the book three months ago. I don't remember now if I had this picture of Harry Stearns in my head when I read the first book last year. I suspect I did, in a vague sense. But as soon as I started this volume, the image was fully formed and there's nothing I could do to shake it. Which is fine, because I wouldn't want to shake it. So are you ready for it? Harry Stearns is.....
Darren McGavin, in his Kolchak character - as Kolchak would appear in his later years, which is not necessarily how Mr. McGavin himself appeared in later years. The appearance, the mannerisms, perhaps with an ironic voiceover, the banter, all of it. I see him driving the Le Mans around L.A. at 25 miles per hour. I hear the vocal inflections in his crusty repartee with Bernice and in his interviewing of people who may or may not be suspects and in dealing with Phil Logan of the LAPD. I even see the older Kolchak savoring his opera collection, which Mr. McGavin might well have done, having had something of a musical performance career himself.
If the Stearns books were to be filmed, the one complication I can see is that Mr. McGavin is dead. Quite dead. And, like I said, I'm picturing a particular character at an age in which we never knew him. But hey.
-
In my review I said I knew a Bernice in real life who has become my rock solid image of Harry Stearns' Bernice.
My Bernice was a real secretary working in Beverly Hills in those very years, the mid-1970s, and she was very much a lady in every respect. She was too "proper" to reveal this in any public sense, but she had a quiet wit that, were she moved from the genteel Beverly Hills office to Harry Stearns' office on the Sunset Strip, would have transformed her in short order to the Bernice we know and love from the books.
Just one of those personal recognition things that starts with a name. But I've been able to see this one completely through, just as thoroughly as I can see Kolchak embodying Harry.
-
Okay, that's enough out of me. I have things I MUST get going on, and someone else can take over for a while. Cheers!
-
I went back to bed ands dozed for almost two hours. I got out of bed just before 9a.m., cleaned my breakfast dishes and the kitties', cleaned the litter, and made the bed.
-
I always saw Harry and Bernice as Walter Matthau and Eve Arden, but those good times are gone.
At the moment, I'd maybe cast Tom Selleck and Linda Lavin.
-
Eve Arden is perfect for Bernice. But I also think Shirley Booth might have been fun, especially when it comes to the lunches. Karen Morrow might work, too. And she’s still with us.
-
Lots of vibes for Vixdad!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
To drown out the horrible office Muzak, I am listening to Yo-Yo Ma’s Appalachian Waltz recording. Lovely.
-
I also agree with Walter Matthau. But I love me my Kolchak.
Hmm, yes, Eve Arden. But "my" Bernice would be eating her smelly sandwiches daintily but heartily.
Ah well...'tis not to be.

Hello one and all! There's a new Broadway Radio Show up on this wonderful site. Broadway's Gilded Age looks at all the musical theatre performers who appear in HBO's series The Gilded Age. You'll hear Kelli O'Hara, Audra McDonald, Christine Baranski, Donna Murphy and many, many more!

When I hear the name Harry, I also hear Barbara Barrie in her Company days. She might have made a good Bernice.

I'm up, I'm up, and have been up since about eight after four hours of sleep. I kept trying to go back to sleep to no avail. Otherwise, I just did stuff I needed to do. I already had the first food o' the day but it was very light - a BLTA. I have a breakfast burrito on order for later and that's pretty light, too.

Eve Arden was, of course, who I pictured for Bernice, and Matthau, too, although he would not match the character physically. I modeled him physically after my uncle Al Kingston who, like Harry, was a literary agent. Bernice is the easier part to cast these days - Lily Tomlin, Bette Midler, any of those types of dames who can do dry humor. Harry is much harder to cast. Physically, Richard Dreyfuss would be fine, but I'm not sure his personality and Harry's would mesh, but he's an awfully good actor. Enjoying the suggestions, though.
-
I could maybe see Kevin kline as Harry.

Has anyone read The Kingkiller Chronicle Series by Patrick Rothfuss?
-
The first book in the trilogy was published in 2007.
-
The second book was published in 2011.
-
I was lucky to have read the first two books 2012.
-
All the fans of this series are still waiting for the 3rd and final book. Reading the comments on Goodreads people are really pissed at the author.

One person posted the following:
Hi, my name is Caleb. Greg was actually my father, I am posting on his account. My father, Greg, started reading this series when he was 55. He has since died of old age waiting for the conclusion of this story. So, I ask you this: Will the finale of this trilogy be released before I die of old age, as well? I would like to be able to explain how the story ended, to my father, in the afterlife. Thank you.
I hope this is sarcasm as he says "old age". ;D

Thanks for sharing the good news DR singdaw.

I know I have an uneducated palate. Maybe a palate that didn't even go to kindergarten.
Friday I was perusing the condiment aisle and decided at almost 72, perhaps it was time to try a different mustard than French's.
I studied all of the selections and chose Dijon.
I tried it....on a hot dog....and had to throw the hot dog away. Back to French's. I am a mustard heathen.
-
I am not a fan of mustard and only like a little French's in egg salad or deviled eggs.

Good news about Singdaw's brother-in-law!
Vibes for a complete recovery.
-
Hi Jeanne. How are the new eye drops working for you?
Hi, Jane. They are fine. I'm using up some older ones, since the Refresh drops are better. Did I mention that what I bought was a 3-pack? I didn't know it at the time and thought $14 was a bit high. For a 3-pack it isn't high at all. At this time I am not planning on the plugs, but will be interested in your friend's experience.

I had a vivid dream last night. I was in some small town, expecting to spend the night in a hotel. Instead, Almetia, Mitt's mother and old friend of Joe Biden, had a one-bedroom cottage that happened to be vacant. She took me to it. I loved the vines crawling up the wall near the front door. As we walked through it I suddenly realized there was an older woman, a friend of Almetia's, in the back room. She was sitting quietly and I hadn't even realized she was there. We spoke to her and I learned she did the cleaning and also prepared some food for me.
Jrand, is Almetia trying to help me find housing? God knows Delaware has housing that's affordable. What is your take on this? (Check your paypal account.)
-
Fine, not great ;) I don't think any of them are great. Then you tried the Relieva drops? I thought your doctor also recommended the gel drops, but then maybe you meant these are gel drops.

I suspect some educated palates also have some old favorites from childhood or simply prefer simplier food at times. I used to have a friend who was a chef to Navy big-wigs, but he himself often chose the most dreadful food.

Not yet.

I suggest waiting until/if there is a final book to the trilogy.

I am sooo tired of remarks like this. Does Caleb think it's easy to write a novel? Or that it happens overnight? BK turns them out very quickly, but that is unusual. Caleb also seems to think that these things should be done for his convenience -- or his dad's. I've often seen Netflix reviewers demand that Netflix obtain certain movies they want to see, without a thought to licensing agreements or whether the film is even available. Do they think that if they demand it it will be done? Ugh!
-
TTFN.
-
I don't think people were angry at Jean M. Auel for taking a LONG time to release the 5th, and again for the 6th book in her Earth's Children (Clan of the Cave Bear) series.
-
I think the difference is Patrick Rothfuss seemed to be very busy doing everything but writing the third book thus frustrating his fans. Still, I agree they didn't need to be nasty about it. Of course most just want to know when or if it will happen.
-
Periodically I check for updates. For years there hasn't been much except the name of the title. To my surprise I did see a few hints it will be released around July.

I'm close to an hour into Valentino and I'm not hating it. It seems to be as oversized as Ken Russell's usual vision of things. The script could be better. Michelle Phillips is a lousy actress. But Nureyev has a good presence, and he fits the Valentino narrative.

I understand people being anxious for another book or film, but I don’t think they have the right (or write) when it comes to control someone’s artistic gifts. I think it was 1985 when I wrote Elliott Roosevelt and warned him that if he didn’t publish another mystery, I was going to stop voting for his father.
-
Still, I knew it was wrong when I did it.

I keep forgetting to mention this very strange film I watched the other night.
-
The film (well telefilm] was COME ON GET HAPPY: THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY STORY. I started watching the film, and frankly I became a bit shell-shocked; and I ended up watching the whole movie. It probably should have been called the Danny Bonaduce story.
-
I kept hoping they would have someone playing BK, but apparently Larry Olivier was busy.
-
Frankly, I think that Shirley Jones should have sued the producers for using that horrible actress(?) as her. I think her name was Eve Gordon.
-
Perhaps not as awful as Bruce’s movie picks lately, but not a award winner either.

I watched something else weird, but I can’t remember what it was.
