Post by: bk on September 06, 2022, 12:22:18 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of that fabled street, and now it is time for you to post until the fabled cows come home.

Can’t decide which version of Feelin’ Groovy I prefer. I like both the Harpers Bizarre rendition AND the one by S&G.

Last night, I was working on my lines a bit, and then I got a call from an out-of-state friend and we talked for a couple of hours so that we could ketchup on what we're been up to.  That was good.

I feel the same way about heat that DR Jeanne does.
I shut myself inside with the AC blasting.
When I lived in Arizona, I passed out on a regular basis. It was 115 degrees most of the summer.

It’s called HYPROV.
An audience member, several actually, are chosen. Then they are put under hypnosis by a leader in that field. Then, Colin Mochrie performs improv with them while they are still under hypnosis.

There was a grindhouse in Montreal here you got three films for $1.25. The bill was usually a film that was about two years old, the second was a few years older and third was eithtya Kung Fu, Italian Action (like Hercules) or a T & A film.I got to see many great films, mediocre and what the hell am I seeing?

Annabelle is very affectionate and needy this morning. I've had to remove her from my lap several times. Stella just wants my breakfast, and Thatch knows when Daddy wants some love from him. He waits until I sit down to orchestrate, then jumps onto my work table to play with pencils, pens, erasers, and the rulers. After he assured himself all is in order, he jumps off to let me work.

I was possibly in a couple of grindhouse theaters during college years in Cleveland. On my earliest visits to NYC then, friends and I walked the 42nd Street block, marveling at the plethora of movie houses and sidewalk attractions, but we didn't go in to any of them. Also in those days, we were naïve enough to not even sense any danger or the true degradation of the area. It was just another big city adventure to walk among it all. I loved NYC and that was just part and parcel of it. I would also have just seen films like Midnight Cowboy and others depicting the area, and it would have been exciting for that reason, too. Sadly, I'm sorry I don't have any solid grindhouse experiences or memories to relate.

I walked from Grand Central to the Broadway district along 42nd street on my own at about 11 years old. This would have been in the mid 1970s.

I was slightly shocked by it all, but never felt in danger. Perhaps I should have.

From John:

Quote
I have made it 90% through Blood Meridian. Cormac McCarthy is a brilliant writer. His descriptions are poetic, the language is transporting. But, OMG, everything is so bleak. The violence is unsettling (as it’s supposed to be), the landscape is harsh and unforgiving. The only relief for some seems to come from alcohol. It’s sheer hell. No wonder I haven’t read him in more than 10 years. I don’t need to subject myself to it.

I have only read The Road, as I feared this would be the case.

From John:

I was not a fan of All the Pretty Horses, but I enjoyed The Road. The Sunset Limited was good, but was more of a play or screenplay. I hear Suttree is excellent, but it remains on my to-read list. And there are so many others ahead of it.

Well, the seasons they are a-changin'.

Following weeks or months (it felt like months) of hot weather and drought conditions, we are welcoming fall with temps in the high 60s, and 24 to 36 hours of nonstop rain. Flash flood warnings abound, and fortunately (KNOCK WOOD) this house is on a hill and we do not have flooding problems. But the driving last night was some of the worst rain-at-night driving I've known. Not THE worst, but among the worst.

And this morning at 6:40 am, I heard a beep from something in the room, and then the generator started up. Power outage! But it lasted only one minute, and so far, there has been no repeat of it.

I got my apron out of retirement this morning to bake for a gathering tonight.

I always make gluten-free treats from a mix so I don't accidentally make a mistake. I'm very careful about preparing them. I got a new mix today: some kind of chocolate chip cookie made by a major brand.

They were so fragile when they came out of the oven a couple of them split. I pushed them back together hoping they'll stick together when cool. But one of them fell completely apart. So I tasted it. My goodness! It was AWFUL. Just AWFUL. I don't even know if I'll put them out tonight.

The mix was over $5, and it made 12 cookies.

As far as the actual tapings, we went home every night, and returned the next afternoon.
Most of each show ended up being cut, as some of the language used was not allowed to be broadcast. 😄

So all of the people who lived in the L.A. area took in as many stranded friends as possible.

And you knew them which helped.
