Well, you you've read the notes, the notes did/didn't, and now it is time for you to post until the do/don't cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: LUMINARIA!
-
From John G. last night
Hi, Iris.
Hi, John!
Sorry I missed you!
-
From Rodzinski last night
Hello Iris!
Hello, Rodzinski!
-
From Larry:
DR Iris, it's always good to know you were here. but I sure wish our timelines coincided. Happy holidays to you!
And the same to you, dear Larry! ❤️
-
I am thinking about all of you and wishing everyone at HHW a very happy holiday season.
I will try to post more often when I feel better.
Sending ❤️
-
Thank you, DR DR Iris.
-
Good morning, friends.
-
DR Rodzinski, I have a suggestion:
-
I shall be gone today from approximately 7:00AM to approximately 7:30PM. Singing in church, dontchaknow.
-
BK, sorry the "Do" became a "Don't."
-
Hope you are feeling back to 100% very soon.
-
Good morning, all!
-
Yesterday was the first day in a week that I did not end up with a horrible mess to clean up. On the positive side, the tests - still a colonoscopy to be done - seem to indicate that my problems may be either Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. I have been worried about stomach cancer, but the tests have shown the issue is not with the stomach.
-
Hugs, {{{DR elmore3003}}}
-
In the meantime, jingle all the way.
-
No one likes a half-assed jingler.
-
Speaking of messes, today is the long-dreaded day when I tackle the bathroom, sweep and mop the floors, and give the cats a new litter box and litter mat. The actual work won't take long, but the logistics and moving things out of the space will be time-consuming.
-
Thanks to our DR ChasSmith, I just had a warm bowl of apple-cinnamon oatmeal laced with dried cranberries that was truly deelish and ambrosial.
-
DR vixmom, I loved your photos from WFO's birthday dinner. I'm happy DR WFO got out for his birthday. You and Steve are such mensches.
-
DR JohnG, was that a 75 lb bag or a 7.5 lb bag?
-
We had good news yesterday from the final performance of Moonshine & Mistletoe:
-
It's been doing well, playing to an average of 70% capacity.
-
That's great, DR elmore3003.
-
Two photos from the closing performance.

Dinner sounds delightful, DR vixmom. Hibachi is so much fun, and so delicious. And how wonderful that the three of you were able to do that.

I think mine is "Christmas Child" from Irma la Douce.

The bathroom and kitchen are vacuumed and mopped. I am very pleased, but I needed a break after all that. When the floors are dry, the cats get a new litter mat and litter box, and I can put everythig back in place.
-
I'm listening to one of my favorite holiday albums. His calypso "Mary's Boy Child" has Thatch dancing around the apartment. He loves a good calypso beat.

Knock! Knock!
Who is there?

Alaska who?
Alaska again: can I have some leftover roast chicken and gravy please?

Yes DR ELMORE, I am hoping DR JOHN G got 7.5 lbs of Chex Mix.

Well I will ask.
How many HHW'ers are Windows folks and how many are iMac folks?
My sister in law wants to sell a hardly used 2017 iMac Pro and it is a good price.....I am thinking about buying it, but aside from a couple of years at work.....I have never used a MAC.
Are they hard to get used to?

I love my iMac! My first one was used, a gift from Tams-Witmark librarian Dale Kugel. I still on occasion need to ask friends for help with things, and I'm certsain there are still plenty of things I do not know.
-
I messed up my response to that. Back later with it! :)

Thank you DR Rodzinski.

Yes, happy news about the mom-anniversary :)

Thank you DR Ron.

Okay, let's try this again.
They are wonderful machines. But as a lifelong Windows user, I can say truthfully that - now having used a MacBook (which I love, don't get me wrong) for a few years - things that must be done "The Apple Way" pop up all the time that still blow my mind, causing me to shake my fist and making me want to bring it down on Steve Jobs' head just as soon as we get him reanimated enough to feel it.

Hugs to Jane, I am sorry about your sad news
Thank you.
-
Bruce, I am sorry you had to cancel the Do, and that the Darling Daughter will not be there for Christmas. Chances are January will be a nicer visit when you are feeling better and she isn't suffering from jet-lag.
-
Just spoke with Mom. She got the good news that a ninth great-great-grandchild is coming in April or May.
Congratulations.

Not much older than I was in the photo from last night, I began to be part of Keith's family. They were all very good to me. By the time we were married I was introduced as daughter, niece, cousin vs simply Keith's wife.
Yesterday Keith's 89 year old aunt, the much younger sister of his mother, died. She was the last of our aunts and uncles between us. The ending was long and sad and I was already missing conversations with her and sharing book recommendations.
-
Jane - Sending condolences on your and Keith's and the whole family's loss.

;)

;)
That's beautiful!
-
Condolences DR JANE.
-
Thanks DR ELMORE, DR CHAS SMITH, and DR GEORGE.
-
Yes DR ELMORE, I am hoping DR JOHN G got 7.5 lbs of Chex Mix.
It was actually 2.5 pounds. Felt like 75 when hauling it into the cart.

Me, too. I bought an Apple laptop earlier this year...and it sits unused because it is so difficult to figure out. I know I can probably watch a video on how to use it, but....

Happily, you're still doing well with 2.5 lbs.

I know the feeling. I have only cousins now. The memories of our family are scattered among the cousins. We are discussing a get-together in spring or early summer to compare notes and things like that.
-
I am almost ready to leave for my cousin Debra's house. She is home alone this afternoon, and family will arrive around 4:30 or 5 with dinner at 5:30 or 6.
There is a bit of drama, which doesn't bear going into. Suffice it to say that one of my male cousins may not be "allowed" by his wife to bring his two daughters to his mom's house. The wife refuses to go.
My approach to this situation is strictly in my head, but if they were MY daughters, they'd by golly go wherever I wanted them to go.
-
My sympathies, Jane.
Thank you.

Jrand, a mac is the easiest thing to use in the world. It's intuitive, much simpler than Windows. I switched to mac based on people's recommendation right here - this was back in the early 2000s - you won't be talking to India when you need help, either. I was petrified of the change. It took me thirty minutes to figure out what I needed to figure out, got Office for Mac so that I'd have Word, and everything else is soooooo much simpler. Never looked back.
-
I'm up, I'm up - eleven and a half hours of sleep.
-
Guck feels like it's going away. Nose is not runny and I didn't take an allergy pill last night.

Sweet!
-
Back from my first outing in six days. Unbelievable, really.
-
First, last week I had a tire low warning on the rear passenger side tire. Over a year ago, I'd bought a little portable air thing for tires. Never even opened it. So, I did, got it set up, set the tire pressure, and it worked really well - slower than the gas station of course, but only about two minutes for that tire.
-
Then I went to the mail place and picked up two packages.
-
I looked across the street at the Gelson's lot and it was insanity personified. Guess it never occurred to anyone to shop on Saturday. Just ridic. Anyway, I walked over, got what I needed and since they had every line open including an express line, I got in and out in five minutes.
-
Then I came right home.
-
I found the whole trip exhausting, frankly, just being out that twenty minutes.
-
Making tuna pasta salad now, and then I'll go back to bed.
-
Watching a little of Holiday Inn before church.
-
It made it to 75 today. Very nice.
-

Thanks DR JOHN G, DR RON PULLIAM, and MR BK for your thoughts.
I am thinking I may buy it and if I can't figure it out or don't like it, I can donate it to the theatre when spring/summer comes along.
A lot of our tech is computer driven and we have MACs in the tech loft.

Hello, Freddie!
-
Freddie, are you the author of that song parody in today’s New York Times?
I loved it. 😊
Well done!
-
I have one aunt and all the cousins on my mother's side and NO aunts and uncles on my father's side....but lots of cousins.
I've lost five cousins. I was not close to two of them. The three were hard losses.
Keith has lost six cousins, four of whom were siblings. A few of those losses were also very sad for me.

A neighbor just dropped off a Christmas gift, a bag filled with Russian teacakes, zuccinni muffins, and chocolate covered almonds.
Best of all was watching her dog in our camera as they approached. He wimpering with excitment. When we didn't come to the door (she didn't knock) he didn't want to leave-soooo cute.

I wasn’t aware of the scandal at Goodreads.
Jane, have you posted about it and I missed it?
-
Jane, you have such nice neighbors.
-
John G and George, thank you very much for the hugs.
-
I wasn’t aware of the scandal at Goodreads.
Jane, have you posted about it and I missed it?
What scandal :o I guess I need to google.
-
Jane, you have such nice neighbors.
We do. I've dropped off six cards and so far have received five. We have a lot more neighbors in the building than that, however, I am not expecting more cards.
-
It’s weird having no family other than my daughter for whom I am grateful.
I’ve only seen her twice in 3 years, one time for my mom’s funeral in April.
What keeps me going is the thought that since 2023 was the worst year of my life, that means it can only get better from here. Right? I sure hope so.
-
The Goodreads scandal, a bit long. From today’s New York Times:
But first, the scandal: “Internet sleuths figured out that an author named Cait Corrain, whose debut novel was scheduled for 2024, had created fake accounts on Goodreads in order to review-bomb other books — overwhelming them with negative one-star reviews. When confronted online, she concocted a fake online chat to divert blame to a nonexistent friend; when that hoax was uncovered, she confessed, citing a “complete psychological breakdown.” Her publisher and her agent dropped her; the planned publication of her novel was canceled. As often happens in these scandals, the use and abuse of Goodreads — a site whose cheery name masks a recent history of abhorrent user behavior — has left many people hurt and at least one person’s career in ruins.”
-
“Goodreads is broken. What began in 2007 as a promising tool for readers, authors, booksellers and publishers has become an unreliable, unmanageable, near-unnavigable morass of unreliable data and unfettered ill will.”
-
Freddie, are you the author of that song parody in today’s New York Times?
I loved it. 😊
Well done!

“Goodreads is broken. What began in 2007 as a promising tool for readers, authors, booksellers and publishers has become an unreliable, unmanageable, near-unnavigable morass of unreliable data and unfettered ill will.”
That sounds terrible!
-
It’s weird having no family other than my daughter for whom I am grateful.
I’ve only seen her twice in 3 years, one time for my mom’s funeral in April.
What keeps me going is the thought that since 2023 was the worst year of my life, that means it can only get better from here. Right? I sure hope so.
I know how hard it is not to see your daughter. Are you still planning to move closer to her? Mega Vibes you are able to make your dream happen in 2024.

Because Amazon purchased it :(

That is a scandal for sure. I'm not sure this is the fault of Goodreads. I think they should remove ratings by people who don't read a book, or rate the book before it is published because the premise offends them.

Wise words from Freddie:

Even funnier in the original context.

Jane, here is the conclusion and suggestion on how to fix the problem.
“So how to fix it? It starts with people: Goodreads desperately needs more human moderation to monitor the goings-on. Obviously, part of any healthy discussion is the ability to express displeasure — those one-star reviews, ideally accompanied by well-argued rationales, are sacrosanct — but Goodreads has enabled the weaponization of displeasure.
It’s not just fledgling authors being pummeled. Earlier this year, Elizabeth Gilbert, the best-selling author of “Eat, Pray, Love,” decided to withdraw a forthcoming novel, “The Snow Forest,” after Goodreads users bombarded its page with one-star reviews objecting primarily to the fact that the novel (which no one had yet read) was set in Russia and would be published at a time when Russia and Ukraine were at war. There is most likely no way to eliminate personal attacks entirely from the site — or from the internet, for that matter — but having more human beings on hand to mitigate the damage would certainly improve the experience.”

JRand, I’m glad that you have many cousins.

Thanks Iris. It seems like a good solution, and sadly it is necessary.
I recall the story about Gilbert pulling the book. While not a fan of hers I was tempted to read the book because of the protests.
I've seens readers calling out the impossibility of writing a bad review on books that haven't been published yet and wondered why Goodreads didn't remove them.
-
One really needs to use their brain when reading reviews and ratings. I often find a poor review will give me reasons to read the book, and a high review reasons why not to read it.
-
Sometimes half way through a book I will return to the reviews to help me decide if I really want to finish reading the book ;D

All caught up.

It was a long day, and I am glad to be home.

DR Jane, condolences to you and your families on the loss.

Condolences to Jane and Keith.

If Goodreads was purchased by Amazon, then it becomes a useless site. As i probably mentioned at the time, several of the Hofstetter books got bad reviews that were written in a style that was unmistakable - new account - reviewed a few other books so it seemed normal, and, of course, hasn't been back since.

That is the problem, they need a way to catch these people and remove the comments.
-
Hopefully publicity about the issues will make people more aware when reading reviews.

I think BK has said that he is planning a do-over on New Year's Day.

Bryan & Freyja cheered us up with photos and texts. Freyja can text on Bryan's phone using the speach options. She sort of designed a Christmas animal log and helped decorate it. They used merengue to make mushrooms and animals. It is very nice.

Which is actually a great time for it.

We played well tonight. But I don’t think enough people heard us.

There was something special though. We have a young member who is neurodivergent. But he is musically gifted. He played a beautiful version of O Come, All Ye Faithful on the organ. Just perfect. And he used the organ’s bells and whistles, too. The bell choir all applauded (with our gloves on) when he finished.

Christmas Eve is done!
Christmas day is nigh!
I had a great time at my cousin's with all my other cousins who were there. We dined on chili, chicken and dumplings, and we drank tea.
It was good!
We opened presents, and we all dispersed. I was home before 8 p.m. And that was good.

I am now very sleepy and will retire before I nod off at this here keyboard.

I have used Macs and PCs and can use either. I’ve mostly used Macs and have never found them user-unfriendly. Given the choice, I’d go MAC as the security tends to be better (fewer viruses anyway) and I like their interface.

Christmas children hunger for Christmas morning…

Glad a good time was had, Ron. A merry Christmas to you.

In-laws came out for Christmas Eve. Wife’s brother brought them. Very difficult even getting them into our house. But we had a good feast, and the kids had a good time.

Good night, all. Time for visions of sugar plums.

People can read and review books because they get Advance Reader Copies...as long as they actually read the books and review the actual books.

Six days of this crap is enough. Yes, feeling a bit better, but the constipation is not helping things and I'm doing everything I've read to do to no avail. It's not complete constipation (CC) but enough to be irritating.

Today, the family went to my mom's for our annual Christmas Eve get together.
-
We invited my friend Shelly to join us, and she accepted!
-
And here we all are:
-
My sister is in the front, then clockwise is my niece, Shelly, my mom, me, and Larry, my sister's boyfriend.
-
We were playing Phase 10, of course, and Larry won.
-
First, we had dinner (lasagna, two kinds of salads, green beans, and a couple of other things I don't remember), and mom's homemade German almond cookies for dessert.
-
Then we played cards, then opened presents.
-
It had been decided that we weren't going to exchange gifts this year, but we did. I got a gift card from Costco, and some ChocZero chocolates. Yum!
-
I got my mom a new amartphone because before, we had gotten her a Jitterbug 2 phone and it was so limiting that she never used it.
-
This new phone is from Boost Mobile, and will cost about $10 less a month!
-
So that's a good thing!
-
And then we all went to our respective homes, which is where I am now.

But...

PAGE ELEVEN DANCE!! ;D
-
Merry Christmas to one and all
-
Also to all and one
-
It was a busy day
-
I peeled and sliced and cooked 3 lbs of mushrooms
-
Sliced and seasoned and out in a casserole dish 3 lbs of red potatoes
-
Opened two cans of peas ( a girl has to cut corners somewhere)
-
And put them in a dish
-
Got all my Pyrex fancy white dishes together , cookies, assorted drinks , a small birthday cake and my 10lb bone in prime rib and packed everything in my car
-
Then I drove to moms it’s like 2 miles away) and unpacked it all
-
Then I got everything cooking for Christmas Eve dinner
-
Helped mom set up the table, not forgetting the English Christmas Crackers
-
Then WFO was delivered by his aide, who went home to enjoy the holiday with her family
-
Then Vixdad ( who had been engaged in clandestine Christmas activities, or so he claimed) arrived.
-
We chatted and ate vast quantities of food between the four of us
-
Ending with Christmas cookies and birthday cake for Bill
-
Then after getting everything cleaned up, the leftovers parceled up and divided, and repacked my car, I drove WFO home and got him settled for the night
-
Then I brought home my leftovers to refrigerate and went to church
-
It was a lovely service, youth bell choir did two hymns , one at the beginning and one at the end of the service.
The string choir did two hymns, also divided throughout the service.
-
We had the reading of the Nativity story in Bible verses, interspersed with congregational carols, accompanied by the organ and brass choir
-
I served as a communion assistant and we had a beautifully full church of all ages , which was wonderful
-
We had our traditional candlelight congregational sing song of silent night, then ended with Joy to the World.
-
Left feeling very Christmassy
-
On my way I home I need to pass by the Presbyterian church, where several of my friends attend.
-
People were just arriving for their service so I stopped in a greeted and hugged a bunch of people which raised my spirits even more
-
Then I came home and had tea with Vixdad and did some texting with the Vixter
-
Tomorrow morning ( well I guess THIS morning) we shall have our annual zoom visit and watch each other opening presents
-
New notes are up.
-
Oater I’ll go to Moms and arrange a video call for my Mom and the kids so they can watch her open her present from them.
-
Up are new notes.
-
I've seen them.
-
I've read them.
-
I wrote them.
-
All that AND page twelve.
-
Then we’ll take mom and go to my brothers house for Christmas dinner
-
Oooh the 12 pages of Christmas posts!
-
May Santa bring everyone a healthy happy rest of 2023 and all of 2024!
-
Maybe I’ll go peek at the notes!
-
After all it’s Christmas!
