Good morning, all!

After a lousy day of being punier than puny, I was in bed by 7:30. Sometime after midnight, the neuropathy in my legs went bananas and the ankles of both legs wold not stop itching. I lay there, wanting to scratch a layer of skin off both legs and trying to relax and get back to sleep. It was hell.
I finally dozed off until Thatch and Annabelle woke me for cuddles and warm spots in the blankets. The alarm rang at 5:30, and I stayed in bed for another 30 minutes.

Jrand, the cartoon you posted on FB of the two dogs dressed up for dinner at what looks like a banquette, and the "waiter" telling them the chef said it's not time for their dinner yet, has given me so much welcome joy! I keep going back to it to think of that cartoon's relevance to our little Liam.

When casting this show, I insisted that if anyone had major conflicts, not to audition and/or clearly list them. And we cast accordingly. Today, Doug gets an email from one of our ensemble gals - Oh, I'm shooting a movie (sure she is) next week but I "think" I'll be able to get to rehearsals on time. Oh, and I'm out of town after that for eleven days. I mean, what is WRONG with people. Doug said, "I don't know how to reply to this email." I said, "Reply thusly - nice knowing you."

I asked one director friend, who routinely has to do his own scheduling at the small theeders, how that's been working at the large one he's recently directed at. They're non-union but are very high profile and professional (the productions he references were stunning):
"Oh I still had a great deal to do with the schedule, but for Cabaret and Guys and Dolls it was split three ways between myself, the MD and the choreographer. For Sweeney it was between me and the MD and I gave him first dibs because obviously the music is the most important thing about that show. He worked out the scheduling he wanted and I worked around it."
"But they are extremely strict about scheduling. People have to tell all their conflicts at auditions, and before they sign their final agreement/contract they have to confirm any new conflicts. No conflicts are allowed after the contract is signed unless it's something that can be worked out between the performer and the directors. They've made it clear that if they miss a rehearsal for a non-scheduled conflict they will be let go from the show. So that makes scheduling a lot easier. This last time we had options, especially in the ensemble, so if someone had too many conflicts we would ask them if they could get rid of some of them and if they couldn't then we simply didn't cast them."
Edit: So they've got it together. At the small venues, it is HELL.

When I was directing THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER - I had a small group of boys who played the choir that came in at the end of Act Two.
One night after rehearsal, one of the boys raised his hand and said, "My mom told me to tell you that I won't be able to be in the show, we are going on vacation."
I said: "Well then, you don't have to come to any more rehearsals."
He said: "Oh I can come to all of the rehearsals, I just can't be in the show."
I said: "Have you mother call me." She never did, and I didn't see him again.

I was afraid of that. At least your mother has an idea of what questions to ask. Still, I hope she takes notes.
