Title: FOUR FILMS FROM 1960
Post by: bk on February 08, 2025, 12:15:22 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were so 1960, and now it is time for you to post until the 1960 cows come home.

It's been a ghastly morning so far. I'm ready to pack it in, return to bed, and stay there until tomorrow. I've dropped things, spilled things, and worst of all I have lost one of my 1099s, the one from the NY Public Library for the pre-showing discussion of the ballet back in March.

I'm a slob as a housekeeper, but I'm pretty meticulous about my tax records, so that missing 1099 really has me concerned. Luckily, I have all of the trashed paper from the day I sorted everything, and I'm hoping the 1099 turnbed up there.

I don't really have an answer for the TOD.

But I will say that our family went to the drive in to see Legend Of The Lost....and could NOT understand one word that Sophia Loren or Rossano Brazzi said.  The same thing happened a couple of years later when we saw Circus World.....Claudia Cardinale was talking but I don't know what she was saying....it was the same when I saw her in Don't Make Waves.....

But I did like all four of the movies that MR BK wrote about today....saw them on TV or video or dvd.

SECONDED.  And I'm thinking you should be able to get another copy of most 1099s, maybe even downloaded or emailed to you. Pain in the ASS, of course, but maybe you'll also luck out and find it, or Stella will be guilted into getting it out of her hiding place and returning it to you.

TOD

I love all of those films, but I didn't see a single one of them in 1960.
Let's see...

Eyes Without a Face - never saw it until I had Criterion's DVD, not laserdisc, so, early 2000s? Wow, talk about being a latecomer. But what a revelation.

Peeping Tom - I saw it either at a festival or a revival house in probably the late 1970s, I'm thinking most likely at the Nuart. I probably didn't see it again until I had the Criterion laserdisc. Now I'm really curious about where in LA it was. Did Filmex show it? Seems like it was at something special.

Black Sunday - As a kid, I salivated over the trailers for this in the early 1960s, it looked like the most stunning horror movie ever. When I finally got to see it, it was probably not until the 1963-1964 timeframe. Didn't see it after that until the DVD era.

Psycho - I never saw it until a rerelease in - I forget, but I have the ad saved somewhere - 1964/1965? I'd read the paperback shortly before that, so I "knew" (haha) what I was in for. I guess I had never even seen clips from the movie. I went to it alone, and it first stunned then scared the living bejesus out of me. I laid awake all night with the lights on.

A very special group of films, these. And good memories attached to all. Which doesn't really answer the TOD. Have to think about that.

It’s hard to pick all of the movies that rocked my world, but I recall:

Bluebeard’s Eighth Wife — first Lubitsch and maybe my first screwball comedy on the big screen
Wild Strawberries — first Bergman
Singin’ in the Rain
Mary Poppins — rewrote my childhood
Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast

I really enjoyed it. It would work for breakfast as well as dinner. The recipe I used was to make two, but I only made one; everything halved worked well. I didn’t cover the crust while baking, which I should do the next time.

One of the very first film books I ever read was Lunatics and Lovers, an overview of screwball comedy. That was in eighth grade or so. I laughed at the in-depth discussions of movies like The Awful Truth, Bringing Up Baby and Libeled Lady. I dragged my parents to a free outdoor showing of Bluebeard’s Eighth Wife. (well, they took me because I was too young to drive.) It was every second as funny as the book promised.

If you want meat, turkey beast would complement it nicely. A tomato salad would be a bright contrast to the creaminess of the pie. Or an endive salad with a tart vinaigrette.

She used curly endive. She never paid attention to Belgian endive. A chef friend’s wife once brought a Belgian endive salad with avocado in it to a party. I loved it so much, I copied quite a few times, including once when Mom and Dad were visiting. She loved it. She never made it herself, but she asked for it several times.

I've never seen the Franju, and I only recently saw Peepng Tom for the first time. It's too unbsettling and I have no urge to see it again.

I saw both Black Sunday and Psycho in their first release, and both still creep me out. The last time I saw Psycho was around 1980 at the long-gone Carnegie Hall revival house. Much as I love it, I don't think I need to see it again. I think my DVD of Black Subnday has both the original Italian and American releases.

FLACO THE EURASIAN EAGLE-OWL landed on Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan bewildered and afraid after his enclosure at the Central Park Zoo was vandalized on February 2, 2023. Many feared for his safety and welfare because he could not fly well and had never hunted before. He evaded rescue for the next two weeks and began to embrace his new life as a wild owl. Flaco initially settled in Central Park and later explored neighborhoods around Manhattan, enchanting New Yorkers everywhere he went. He sadly and unexpectedly died a year after his release on February 23, 2024, when the hazards of the urban environment finally caught up with him.

This Afternoon, Snow and sleet likely before 4pm, then snow and sleet, possibly mixed with freezing rain. High near 33. Southeast wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Tonight  Rain, freezing rain, and sleet, becoming all rain after midnight, then gradually ending. Low around 30. Southeast wind 5 to 7 mph becoming west after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 90%.

What was I thinking when I read the weather this morning.  I thought it was nicer there than here.  Do you need to go out at all?
No, I don’t need to go out today, but have several medical appointments next week, and we’re due for more snow on Tuesday. 😟

DR JANE what is the big drawer for?

You can change the temperature so it can be used at a refrigerator setting or soft freeze items like ice cream.  A vegetable drawer has a seal to keep veggies better.

DR Laura, the NY Historical Society has an exhibition on Flaco, the Central Park Zoo owl that was freed by vandals. I would love to see it, but there's no way.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQ6PgTGJCYc

Finding Flaco is a wonderful book.

I had no idea there were several books about Flaco. I was crazy about Pale Male the red-wing falcon who lived on Fifth Avenue.

I, too, loved Pale Male.
This is a nice tribute to him.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWb0i8KCHeU

I have several documentaries on Pale Male and the book Red-tails in love.

I'm a slob as a housekeeper, but I'm pretty meticulous about my tax records, so that missing 1099 really has me concerned. Luckily, I have all of the trashed paper from the day I sorted everything, and I'm hoping the 1099 turnbed up there.

I’ve always been impressed with how early you start your tax prep. I suspect the errant 1099 will turn up.

What, if anything, are DRs doing to cope with all the very, very bad news out of Washington?

Screaming at the TV?
Calling/ emailing your various senators and representatives?
Donating to political organizations?

I ask because some people I’ve talked to think there’s nothing than can be done. Or they think that nothing is being done. At a minimum I would think that most of us need to exercise maximums stress reduction skills. Aside from some cursing what you doing?

(I’m donating.)
