Good morning, all!
-
Good morning.
-
I gave up trying to sleep a couple of hours ago.
-
Because we had no hoain yesterday, the apartment was freezing by 8:00, so the cats and I went to bed and buried ourselves in blankets and quilts. I wokearound 10:30 for a batrhroom break, and again around 1:30. Then I slept well to 4:00, and went back to sleep till the alarm rang. The cats, probably because it was too cold to move, behaved.
-
I've still not done the laundry, and I'm postponing it again today. I have no urge to sit in an unheated basement for 90 minutes while the washers do their thing. I will take the recyclables and garbage down and hold off on the laundry until the weekend until the temperatures are in the high 30s and low 40s.
-
I'm not too electronically savvy, so I wonder: When there's no heat for the building, would there be heat for the dryers in the laundry room?
If so, maybe the laundry room (with the dryer running) would be a warmer place to hang out than the rest of the building.
-
Thanks again, BK, for the DRAT! THE CAT! rehearsal report.
-
Sending more coping vibes as you deal with the medical test coming on Friday.
-
More congrats to MichaelG for the great press!
-
Quick recovery vibes for Jane and John G!

DR JohnG, I enjoyed the two Blue Moon reviews. Lorenz Hart remains my favorite lyricist, and the film sounds very interesting. I'm sure this excellent book was very helpful to the screenwriter, since it really covers complicated relationship of Rodgers & Hart in the late 1930s when Rodgers became more frustrated over Hart's personal issues. The interviews in it make it clear that 20-30 years after Hart's death, Rodgers still had a hard time coping with Harft.
For the record, one of the two authors, Jan Clayton, was the original star of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Carousel.
-
In 1994, the first serious, more objective biography on Hart by N olan was published - The Marx-Clayton book from the 1970s was quite good, but clearly a sympathetic look at Hart and a hatchet job on Rodgers - and it was followed in 2013 by a good look at Hart and his work.
-
Thanks for that Hart book rundown, DR elmore3003.
-

Good morning, all.

It's 25 out. Feels like 5. It wasn't supposed to get this cold last night.
-
I can't work the food pantry today. Those folks will be frozen this morning when they have to bring in all the food.
-
I am going to the getting place in a moment.
I shall return.
-
Those bastards at Spectrum raised my monthly cost by $11.00. I am not amused.
-
Funny how DR Jrand74 never talks about drink in the drinking place.
-
Tonight I will be attending a dinner gathering of my work colleagues. Attendance is not required, but it is politic. Oh yes, it is politic.
-
Praise be, politic.
-
Thanks, Elmore. I love paging through the complete lyrics, too. I didn't know about Jan Clayton's book.
Meryle Secrest is really tough on Rodgers for his treatment of Hart, as she should be.

I slept well, most of the night. I dreamt I was sorting clothing for a drive and I balked when we were asked to include some ridiculous items with the clothing. The weirdest was a pair of dogs with each outfit. And not all of the dogs were friendly. And nobody seemed to care that we were giving unhoused people dogs or that there was no food to feed the dogs.
-
Nice article DR JOHN G.
-
DR singdaw that's because EVERY PLACE I GO or EVEN IF I STAY HOME.....that's a Drinking Place.
-
The neighborhood streets were a bit slickery, but the main roads were okay. The parking lots were neglected.
I don't count a shopping trip during s**w to be over and successful until ALL of the items are in the house.
So today....SUCCESS!

Good morning, all.
-
It's ridiculous how accustomed I've gotten these past couple of weeks to temps in the single digits and teens.
It's disgusting, actually.
Next week looks to be promising for some thawing, but we'll see.
-
You know what? It's Wednesday, and BK knows this stuff. By God, I'll Ask BK! :)
It's a stupid tech question, because I apparently need to relearn something I already knew:
On newspapers.com I want to see if they have such-and-such a newspaper for certain years, and I can't make the search functions do what I think they should do. Examples - for Cleveland, OH:
The Plain Dealer - Do they have anything in 1967-1972? I'm thinking they don't, but nothing that appears on my screen just tells me what they have or don't have. I get thumbnails of a bunch of other papers, which probably means no, but ... ?
Cleveland Press, same years...
-
Otherwise, I'm so glad I got the subscription. It's worth it, if only for the LA Times and my Florida papers. Not doing so well on the Ohio and Connecticut front thus far.
-
Thanks DR FREDDIE.
-
DR CHAS SMITH I have tried the same thing at newspapers.com and the search function is NOT the most sophisticated. It is not easy to narrow down what you want....but sometimes just playing around with it a bit, you can get what you want.
And of course by then you've done so many steps, it's easy to forget how you got there.
-
WORDLE in five.

I'm so glad you posted this, because I honestly thought today was Tuesday. We would have left our poor grandchild unclaimed at school this afternoon.

I walked to the grocery store this morning to pick up a couple of things, including some bagels for the homeless guy at the corner.
I realized I forgot to put stuff back in my pockets this morning, and I had not a penny.

Back to Thelma. What a joy. Even throw-away lines, like an old lady describing a production of Swan Lake set during the Korean War, have made me lol.

I was tempted to return to the gym today wearing a mask. A few people I talk to there have health issues and I don't want to risk passing something along.

Keith has new computer/reading glasses to pick up before the gym and I didn't want to wait in the car when it is cold out.

Have you been able to return for the items you left behind?

I am very grateful we did our National Parks trip last year.

I just slammed the phone down on a Spectrum billing representative. She said I was warned in my January statement there would be a rae increase and she couldn't do a thing for me. I could see a couple of dollars, but $11.00 is outrageous. I don't know what to do. Without work, I canmnot afford to add $11.00 to a bill for phone, computer, and TV.

That is a huge jump, Elmore.

Update on the Cleveland newspapers thing:
A couple of people in a Cleveland group said the Cleveland Press isn't available anywhere. But GenealogyBank (I'm guess that's something like Ancestry?) has the Plain Dealer for the price of membership with them, and supposedly the Cleveland Public Library offers the Plain Dealer archives for free. I will for sure be checking out the library, and if it's not all that I want, maybe a short-term subscription to the former will be in order.

I don't even want to tell y'all what we pay here at this house for TV, internet, and "land line" phone from Xfinity...with one main cable box and two "slave" ones, high-speed modem, etc. And we just recently got a $20.00 increase. Just because. It's horrible.
I also don't even want to tell y'all what we pay Verizon (who has always had the most dependable cell service in these parts) for the three cell phones.
It's depressing as HELL.

I'm not BK, but I can answer this. I didn't think Newspapers.com had either of these either, but I'm seeing them now. Use the Browse feature rather than Search - search will indeed not tell you. The Press looks a bit scattershot, but the Plain Dealer looks better. I'll have to do some more searching to see if it's really working.
-
GenealogyBank is a competitor to Newspapers.com which I subscribe to in part for the Plain Dealer access, given my family history in Cleveland. But if newspapers.com has it now...
-
Good advice DR MICHAEL G.
-
Indeed DR ELMORE.....like DR CHAS SMITH I have Xfinity and everything costs more and more.....
-
And more.

Yikes! Hoping your prospects for 2025 generate either cash or work!
-
Wow, DR MichaelG, thank you for all of that additional info that I didn't know...at all.
So that's what GenealogyBank is. I had no idea. See, I'm learning some stuff today.
-
OMG. Yes! The Plain Dealer AND Cleveland Press, for those years I want.
Cincinnati Enquirer, too.
I see no love for the Columbus Dispatch. And Connecticut is shabbily represented, to say the very least. But Cleveland is a gold mine. Thank you, DR MichaelG!
The BROWSE FEATURE. Who would have known??
-
Thank you for asking! It will be a lot easier to do Cleveland research with the newspapers at Newspapers.com which is integrated with Ancestry, where I do my family history research.
-
GenealogyBank has the Columbus Dispatch from 1871 to 2018.
-
And the Cleveland Jewish News has a free online archive:

-
Three guesses where my parents went to high school...
-
GenealogyBank has the Columbus Dispatch from 1871 to 2018.
Ha! I had just thought of that possibility a few minutes ago. Thanks!!
-
Hmm... well, I don't know the high schools in the Cleveland area, so...
-
Oh, Cleveland is good enough. We have a winner!
-
Oh! Gotcha. I thought there might be a very prominent Jewish school in particular that you were referring to.
-
Well, there were a lot of Jews in the neighborhood. And for those who do know Cleveland high schools, here's a clue: "Tarblood! Whack! Thud!"
-
Wow. Interesting.
-
Glenville. Beachwood.
I was centered in the University Circle area, but these names all meant something.
-
Yes, Glenville. We stayed in University Circle during a family history trip to Cleveland with my Dad and sister, where we visited his high school, the house he grew up in, and the apartment building where my sister was born.
-
What brought you to Cleveland for those years?
-
Oh, Cleveland is good enough. We have a winner!
;D
-
Up from a nap.
-
It's cold today. Doesn't feel any warmer than this morning.
-
It is colder here today. I had planned on walking anyway, even in the way. Then after exercising inside my cough got worse so I decided not to walk.
-
What brought you to Cleveland for those years?
Cleveland Institute of Music. A year of piano with Arthur Loesser, till he died, then with Eunice Podis. But by then I was firmly entrenched in ensemble and orchestral work under James Levine which was absolutely to my liking, and the piano "major" was left to wither on the vine. Lots of accompanying of Eleanor Steber's students, instrumental students of some of the Cleveland Orchestra people, etc. Wish I could do it all again, only better. :) But don't we all.
-
The line on my positive covid test was extremely light today and I expect to be covid free tomorrow. Either way, we will go to Costco and do one or two other errands. I'll wear a mask.

I’m down to the last few Billy Wilder films. I’ve started The Fortune Cookie, which I am enjoying a little more than I did the first time.

Got to undergo an hour of volunteer retraining.

For the theater where I usher. It’s mandatory. It was mostly a waste of my time.

I thought maybe it was for a new volunteer option you were thinking of doing.

The final episode of th first season of DEXTER: ORIGINAL SIN seemed far more violent than any of the other episodes of this season. Some especially intense scenes. I had to look away several times.
But it certainly presented a cliffhanger that would be very interesting to see play out, when (or is it if?) the series gets a second season.

Watching Billy Wilder on Dick Cavett.

What an amazing talk show.

Yes, he could be twee.

I'm going to finish Zora Neale Hurston's Life of Herod the Great.

Rehearsal was fun and we got the song part of Dancing with Alice all done and then I blocked scene three leading into the song Holmes and Watson (we'd already staged the song) and then scene seven leading into Dancing with Alice. Then we have the big scene that follows Dancing with Alice, which is ten pages long, but once that's done, act one is blocked.
-
And at least three things, maybe four in act two are blocked.
-
It was fun for me because I just got to watch Cheryl Baxter work her magic on Dancing with Alice. We also ran Holmes and Watson, since our leading lady is back with us and there were a few people who hadn't seen it and they loved it. It's the kind of number I love staging and it really is cute.
-
I suppose I should write some damn notes.
-
I don't know, maybe George'll show up. He hasn't been around much today.
-
I had a Subway Eyetalian sandwich for food, then a beef stick and some chips for a snack.

These posts are RIVETING.
