Well, you've read the notes, the notes preferred spaghetti to fettuccine, and now it is time for you to post until the carbonara cows come home.

And the word of the day is: ENTHUSIASM!

So, yesterday, this happened:
-
:o
-
The night before last night during rehearsal, I started feeling a tingling in my thumb (and not in the good way). When I woke up yesterday morning, my thumb was larger than usual, and obviously infected...probably from a hangnail. Anyway, I was able to go to urgent care in the afternoon, and the lanced it (I didn't look), and bandaged it up. I got a prescription for antibiotics and an antibiotic ointment to use for the next seven days.
-
I got to rehearsal about a half hour late (I let the director know what was going on) and that went well. They staged "Your Fault" and a couple of two-page scenes. Now the entire show has been blocked, AND we have three weeks to polish and perfect! ;D
-
Topic of the Day: for the last couple of days I've been listening to the cast recording to Bounce while driving to and from Centralia for rehearsals, and yesterday, I started listening to Road Show, the final version of the show.
-
And now before I go to bed, I have to find out who all in the cast has sent me their Bios and headshots, and forward them to the person who's putting together the program. I need to submit mine, too.
-
Notes fingerprinted. Booked.
-
Our first 9-pages of posts day since April 18. There’s life in the old broad yet!
-
And had I not fallen o’sleep, we would’ve gotten to 10. My failure.
-
And we haven’t reached 10 pages since March 25.
-
March 24 was our last only 6-page day. Might’ve been some shame-posting on the 25th.
-
Can’t wait to see this Mayday film.
-
DePauw’s a great idea, JRand. Good luck!
-
I assume you already tried her old haunts at Purdue.
-
You might also try IU Northwest’s theatre dept up in Gary.
-
I say that mainly because I had a lot of formative theatrical field trips there as a kid. Once saw a production of “Magic to Do” there. And Androcles and the Lion.
-
George I thought you were trying to tell us you were cast in a production of Even Cowgirls Get the Blues. Yikes! Good luck with your thumb. Thumb vibes.
-
Mrs R has returned from her trip to Munich. Next week, Fargo. But only for a couple days. Then a break from travel.
-
You know the old ditty, “New York, London, Fargo, Munich, everybody talk about, Pop Musik.”
-
M, whose real name is Robin Scott. One of the great one-hit wonders. #1 in the U.S., Canada, Australia. Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, and South Africa. So topped the charts in New York, but not London, Paris, or Munich.

And the word of the day is: ENTHUSIASM!
Always reminds me of Patty Duke’s ill-fated Emmy speech.
-
Someone posted on reddit the other day TIL which means “Today I learned…” and it was about Patty’s convoluted scenario of paternity uncertainty among three possible dads. And someone commented, “Wow, I guess a hot dog really did make her lose control.”
-
I didn’t see if BK noticed that juicy post by Mr. Graae, reported by Fred.
-
Pop Muzik was kept out of the #1 slot in the UK by Art Garfunkel’s “Bright Eyes,” which did not even crack the Hot 100 here. Bright Eyes was the biggest song of the year in the UK!
-
Listening to it, it’s lovely but as depressing as the movie from which it came, Watership Down.
-
Written by Mike Batt, who created music for another UK-only phenomenon, the Wombles.
-
According to wiki, Batt described recording Bright Eyes as "one of the most difficult sessions" of his career.
-
Aka, just another day working with Art Garfunkel.
-
Well, I got us to page 2 with that flurry of nonsense. That should give us a good start this Friday. Perhaps we can achieve page 10 before all is said and done.
-
Well, after all is said but before it is done. And now… a return to sleep.
-
With a final thought that M’s “Moonlight and Muzak” should have been a hit as well.

When in Fargo, stay away from the wood chippers. I hear they're dangerous.
Or is that only in the movie "Fargo"?
-
You know the old ditty, “New York, London, Fargo, Munich, everybody talk about, Pop Musik.”
You got me searching that song. YouTube's algorithm seemed to decide that for "Pop Muzik," I'd enjoy seeing these twenty-something colorfully-dressed twins dancing (is this Broadway-style choreography?) to the song.

I didn’t see if BK noticed that juicy post by Mr. Graae, reported by Fred.
As some Jewish teenage Yeshivah BK fanboys in the 1970s would have told you, BK himself was quite the juicy thing - back in the days when TV shows tried to pass him off as the nerd who couldn't get the girl. :)

More modern major miracle vibes for BK!

Good morning, all!
-
I did not have a good night of sleep. I went to bed at 9:00, slept until 11:30, and then spent the next six hours playing with the cats and dozing. I did have a long dream about a rehearsal/recording session in a classroom with a blackboard. BK and Susan Egan were the only folk I recognized in the dream.
-
I'm not sure of my plans today beyond the basement trip with the recyclables.

Hoping to make this Broadway parody song a Mother's Day tradition - remembering the ads for the Broadway play THE MOTHER WITH THE HAT -

Recalling the controversially-titled critically acclaimed Broadway play whose ads shortened an unprintable word to "Mother" and called the play "The Mother With The Hat" -
which some (maybe jokingly?) opined looked like it could have been advertising the perfect show to see with Mom for Mother's Day.
-
Regarding carbonara dishes: Rigatoni has usually been my favorite pasta for carbonara. The sauce gets into (and depending how you spoon it, even can fill) the tube of the rigatoni and also into the ridges of the rigatoni.

Well, the four-hour sitzprobe was exactly that ... four hours of probing sitz. We finished about 15 minutes early, having played/sung everything except the bow music - and we won't be playing the exit music, so that's that.
-
Did a very good interview on a winery this morning. Got another in a few minutes.
-
I wanted to pun a riff on sitz, ChasSmith, but my brain is too tired to probe for one.

No groaning at HHW.

Interview vibes for DR JOHN G.

I liked that Pop Musik video DR FREDDIE - and the Mother one as well.

thumb digit vibes for DR GEORGE.

DR RODZINSKI I thought about Purdue, but it is a LONG way away.....and there are people there who think they know everything there is to know about Frances Farmer and are very self interested.

Maybe for a Pal Joey sitzprobe:

The percussion wasn't brilliant today!

The trombonist doesn't know how to play!
Or maybe not.

In other news, I'll be playing one of the keyboards in EVITA at the local outdoor* theeder in July.
*I don't generally do "outdoors". But this orchestra tent is well covered, so no risk to the equipment. It's a bit of a schlep, carting everything in and out of the adjacent building every night, but playing this show with a cast I partially love will be worth it.

and the Mother one as well.
Thanks, Jrand!

A Cast I Partially Love - That has the makings of a fun memoir.

I've only had carbonara two, maybe three times ever. I lucked out the first time, with a nicely done bacon component and a sauce that was perfectly creamy, not too much, not too little. I don't remember much about the others, but I am in total agreement on the issues BK noted. It's really got to be done just right. There's very little wiggle room. And yes, spaghetti - or linguini, too, for me.
-
DR RODZINSKI I thought about Purdue, but it is a LONG way away.....and there are people there who think they know everything there is to know about Frances Farmer and are very self interested.
Always a proper time for the Bye Bye Birdie Ann-Margret "Handsome men from Yale or Purdue" moment.
at 1:35 at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rS38PiZ2-RA
Could a 16 year old character do that in a movie in this century? :)
-
Ann-Margaret plays that role with an intensity that borders on psychotic, at times.
-
Why not call them Greece's pieces?
Ha!
-
I can’t remember any specific carbonara dishes, but the chicken carbonara sub from Quizno’s was my jam.
-
That sounds delicious!

DR singdaw, here's some photographic evidence (I have lots more) of the one-night High Covid Era (Sept. 2020) performance of ASSASSins by the theeder company that had put on a stunning production of it a few years prior. They rented the one remaining drive-in in that area for one night, set up every scene on the flat beds of pickup trucks - including a few nice vintage ones - parked along the front, and using multiple cameras, projected the show onto the huge screen. Spectators viewed from their cars just as they would a movie, with the audio piped to the car radios.
Miraculously, they were able to assemble all but one of the original cast. The only real concession was using a 4-piece band instead of the full orchestra used previously. As DR John G. indicated, the evening's big surprise was that the car parked in the front row - next to the band - had Stephen Sondheim in it. They allowed his car to pull out before letting us all know.

TOD: I've probably listened to Six the Musical more than anything lately.

When we drove to California, we'd holler out "Hey Google. Play a song about pickles" or some such thing. We got interesting songs.

I didn't know that story, DR ChasSmith. Amazing! Thanks for sharing it (and the photos).

We were supposed to have access to the new apartment to start moving stuff on the 7th. Now it looks like it won't be until the 12th, at the earliest. And the movers come the 13th. I'm kind of in a panic.

I had taken today off from work to do a lot of moving. But fate has other plans.

I have not heard the score of SIX.....it doesn't seem to interest me....but I could be wrong.
Is the Bob Martin who wrote the libretto for the current Broadway show BOOP! the same Bob Martin who wrote THE DROWSY CHAPERONE?

I just finished watching BECOMING THE RICARDOS on FreeVee.....the 2022 movie about Lucy & Desi and the Red scare moment.....
What a bunch of BS.....couldn't they just tell the true story? Why mix everything up?

Taxi Driver last night was intense. It was Bernard Herrmann's last score. It also has a supremely creepy use of Jackson Browne's "Late for the Sky."

An hopur ago, I went into the bathroom to have a nice bath. Only . . . one of the cats - I suspect Stella - had diarrhea all over the edge of the tub and running down into the tub. I spent the last hour cleaning up.

Someone posted on reddit the other day TIL which means “Today I learned…” and it was about Patty’s convoluted scenario of paternity uncertainty among three possible dads. And someone commented, “Wow, I guess a hot dog really did make her lose control.”
So, was that before or after Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell?
-
I have not heard the score of SIX.....it doesn't seem to interest me....but I could be wrong.
The week of King Charles' coronation, Youtube suggested for me a video by Horrible Histories called "The Monarchs Song." It was so much fun!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSvKc-8frp8
I binged on all their videos. It was a kids' show about history: "History with the nasty bits left in!"
So I learned about Henry VIII's wives (and other English history).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTdTDCRKvvM
Six the Musical is unrelated to Horrible Histories. But I knew their stories. It is about the six wives having a competition to choose which one had it worst. Each queen is based on a modern pop star.
Not my favorite kind of music, but fun nonetheless.
-
Man, I could have made several posts out of that one.
-
I learn best by repetition and song. Like a child, I guess.

Rescheduling movers can be tricky (I originally typed “trucky,” which is also true). Thet book out in advance so they may already have no time for Singdaw. Ideally, the place is ready in time. How stressful.
-
Had orange chicken for food.
-
A get two for the price of one thing - so, two small versions is what I was expecting.
-
What I got was two small versions that were pretty large.
-
And white rice.
-
But apparently the two for one thing was a lunch special, so...
-
I also got two soups, four things of rice, two salads, and two fortune cookies.
-
the soup wasn't very good.
-
Only tried one of them.
-
The salad has no dressing.
-
Neither of them.
-
The orange chicken was lousy - only ate less than half of one.
-
I don't know why orange chicken is so hard to get right.
-
But we're on page six.
-
I'll miss next week's class singing a chamber chorus concert at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Next week's film is Saturday Night Fever so it all works out.
Do you not care for Saturday Night Fever - or maybe just not that interested in analyzing it?
It's a good movie and I respect it, but I saw it for the first time about a year ago when it was free on streaming. Unlike Three Days of the Condor, I don't feel a need to see it again so soon. I'm sure I would have enjoyed the class, but it's the least interesting week to me on the syllabus.

RE: BOB MARTIN
Well DR FREDDIE that means I like one out of three.
How do you feel about the other Broadway musicals he co-wrote, ELF and THE PROM?
-
The workman (noticed I made sure the k typed) are gone for the weekend and it is very quiet in here :)
-
ELF the musical seems to hold up well even in local theedur productions. I saw a production in 2019 in Florida (not that far from Tampa) where John Archibald (whom some here may know from castrecl) played both Santa and the bad guy, which was a fun combination of roles and John Archibald did the roles quite marvelously.
-
Back to ASSASSins for a moment:
It's interesting (to me) that I've always cared less about what Mr. Sondheim may have thought about our scrappy little 4-piece reduction than the fact the he had to hear me land on a chord before the actor got there in a recitative-like passage. It's one of those things you want to kill yourself over and you forever wonder how it could have happened (and it was clearly marked in my score), and you never stop berating yourself. BUT (there's that BUT again)... what eased my pain was the knowledge that the master later got to witness our MD picking up his guitar to accompany John Hinckley, losing his grip on it, and nearly knocking his music stand over. Thank gawd for that. Even though he's dead now. (Sondheim, not the MD.)
-
The workman (noticed I made sure the k typed) are gone for the weekend
:)
-
Thank you, all. The day feels odd.
-
Congratulations, MichaelG.
-
Seven!

Howdy, Rupert!

Condolences, DR John G. And {{{HUGS}}}
-
And yes. Cancer sucks.
-
Well, I took today and turned that frown upside down.
-
While the new apartment isn't ready and hasn't been cleaned, we did get access. So I have started to move stuff.
-
They re-painted, replaced all the carpeting, and replaced all the "hardwood" surfaces (it's laminate, but whatever).
-
What hasn't been done is they're replacing all the appliances with stainless and then cleaning everything.
-
So all in all, not too bad.
-
In addition to that, I got a text from my boss that she is changing her day off, so I can now have off Mon/Tue/Wed next week, and I think we can get everything to work out.
-
That was very nice of your boss.

which some (maybe jokingly?) opined looked like it could have been advertising the perfect show to see with Mom for Mother's Day.
I vaguely remember reading about the title "issue" when it was running. Funny video, Freddie!

Vibes for George and his thumb!
Thanks, John!

Millions, a new musical with a book by Bob Martin (BOOP! The Musical) and a score by Adam Guettel (Floyd Collins), begins its world premiere at Alliance Theatre in Atlanta May 9.
-
More Bob Martin news.
-
Eight!
-
It feels a lot better today...especially after I rebandaged it.
Good. While it looks bad, does the infection look better?
-
‘Cause it’s a Bob Martin world. And we just live in it.
-
Anyone watching Next to Normal on PBS tonight?
-
No.
-
Hoping to make this Broadway parody song a Mother's Day tradition - remembering the ads for the Broadway play THE MOTHER WITH THE HAT -

Interesting news, John G!

Coppola’s next project sounds like a dream. Or possibly a nightmare. It’s a musical version of Edith Wharton’s Glimpses of the Moon, a bittersweet novel of the 1920s and two jazz age lovers without enough money to keep them together.
-
DR FREDDIE - I am not a fan of those particular shows....we shall see what MILLIONS brings.
-
Had at least a little good news that will make the weekend more tolerable.
-
I HATED the orange chicken and I've ordered one slice of pizza at a place that's usually okay, just to get the taste out of my mouth and because it's less calories than ice cream from Coldstone Creamery.
-
Look at us on page eight.
-
That also makes me happy.

Hoo and ray!

DR FREDDIE - I am not a fan of those particular shows....we shall see what MILLIONS brings.
Of course, let's say you run into him at some awards nominee luncheon in New York at some point, then you LOOOOVED every show he did!
:)

Flattery is the most productive form of flattery, so "they" say.

The Today Show had a number of Broadway shows on. Liked the actress in BOOP! Disliked Smash and Death Becomes Her. Liked Maybe Happy Ending. Darren Criss's physicality is impressive.

Gorgeous "Maybe Happy Ending" number. Thanks for linking that, John.
It felt really awkward, of course, this being right after the show got so many Tony Nominations, but no nomination for the leading lady.

Sorry about your medical news, DR George.
~~~PRONTO RECOVERY VIBES~~~
Thanks, Singdaw!
Vibes for George and his thumb!
Ditto!
I knew there was something I had meant to post!
Thanks, Larry!
Fast healing vibes for the thumb of DR George!
Thanks, ChasSmith!
I wanted to pun a riff on sitz, ChasSmith, but my brain is too tired to probe for one.
;D
thumb digit vibes for DR GEORGE.
Thanks, Jrand!
Maybe for a Pal Joey sitzprobe:
Sitz!
Sitz!
The trombonist doesn't know how to play!
Or maybe not.
I thought it was funny, Freddie! :))
In other news, I'll be playing one of the keyboards in EVITA at the local outdoor* theeder in July.
*I don't generally do "outdoors". But this orchestra tent is well covered, so no risk to the equipment. It's a bit of a schlep, carting everything in and out of the adjacent building every night, but playing this show with a cast I partially love will be worth it.
Hope it's a great cast and run, ChasSmith!
DR RODZINSKI I thought about Purdue, but it is a LONG way away.....and there are people there who think they know everything there is to know about Frances Farmer and are very self interested.
Always a proper time for the Bye Bye Birdie Ann-Margret "Handsome men from Yale or Purdue" moment.
Could a 16 year old character do that in a movie in this century? :)
Nope. ::)
I can’t remember any specific carbonara dishes, but the chicken carbonara sub from Quizno’s was my jam.
Oh, I think I've had that. :)
On the second to the last episode of Succession. The funeral has started.
-
Onward!
-
Nine!
-
Enjoyed the clip, DR John G. Thank you.
-
Also enjoyed Crescendo on Apple TV, a documentary of the 2022 Van Cliburn competition. The winner, SPOILER ALERT, an 18-year old South Korean, was a revelation.
-
I am achy. I am too old for manual labor. I am taking a shower and going to bed.
-
Good night, friends.
-
And others.
-
I’m sick of the hand-held camera on Succession.
-
Where do everybody go?
-
On the last episode.
-
It’s long.
-
Gratuitous post 250!
Watching a motion picture.
-
Short intermission break.
-
Pizza slice was average but better than the orange chicken.
-
Up until today, it's been chilly and gray out for quite some time.
-
Today? Suddenly it's summer and I finally had to turn the air on as the house temp got up to 81.
-
Glad to hear MR BK got a bit of good news.
-
Exactly DR FREDDIE.....
-
Well I found Next To Normal interesting.
I liked the physical production....and some of the musical.
But it was all TOO meta for me.
-
I will watch it soon.
-
Good night, all
-
Of all the clips I have seen - Maybe Happy Ending is my favorite from the current crop of Broadway musicals as well.
-
When we drove to California, we'd holler out "Hey Google. Play a song about pickles" or some such thing. We got interesting songs.
;D
-
Finished with my viewing.
-
Seems like a Saturday, not a Friday.
-
And yet it is a Friday not a Saturday.
DR singdaw, here's some photographic evidence (I have lots more) of the one-night High Covid Era (Sept. 2020) performance of ASSASSins by the theeder company that had put on a stunning production of it a few years prior. They rented the one remaining drive-in in that area for one night, set up every scene on the flat beds of pickup trucks - including a few nice vintage ones - parked along the front, and using multiple cameras, projected the show onto the huge screen. Spectators viewed from their cars just as they would a movie, with the audio piped to the car radios.
Miraculously, they were able to assemble all but one of the original cast. The only real concession was using a 4-piece band instead of the full orchestra used previously. As DR John G. indicated, the evening's big surprise was that the car parked in the front row - next to the band - had Stephen Sondheim in it. They allowed his car to pull out before letting us all know.
That's really cool, ChasSmith! Not just having Sondheim in the audience, but the whole movie theeder musical idea!
We were supposed to have access to the new apartment to start moving stuff on the 7th. Now it looks like it won't be until the 12th, at the earliest. And the movers come the 13th. I'm kind of in a panic.
Oh, no! :o
Got the very unwelcome news this morning that a dear friend died April 30 from cancer. Pardon the French, but: Fuck cancer.
Oh, no. My condolences to you, John. :(
-
An hopur ago, I went into the bathroom to have a nice bath. Only . . . one of the cats - I suspect Stella - had diarrhea all over the edge of the tub and running down into the tub. I spent the last hour cleaning up.
I can't say I feel like a bath at the moment. Damn!
NOOOOOOO!!! :P
I just finished watching BECOMING THE RICARDOS on FreeVee.....the 2022 movie about Lucy & Desi and the Red scare moment.....
What a bunch of BS.....couldn't they just tell the true story? Why mix everything up?
It made for a good story though I agree, just tell the true story.
Sometimes the truth of a story isn't dramatic enough for a dramatic interpretation. ::)
-
I have not heard the score of SIX.....it doesn't seem to interest me....but I could be wrong.
Is the Bob Martin who wrote the libretto for the current Broadway show BOOP! the same Bob Martin who wrote THE DROWSY CHAPERONE?
Yes.
Jrand, Bob Martin also co-wrote the book for SMASH.
He also starred as Man in Chair in The Drowsey Chaperone.
Someone posted on reddit the other day TIL which means “Today I learned…” and it was about Patty’s convoluted scenario of paternity uncertainty among three possible dads. And someone commented, “Wow, I guess a hot dog really did make her lose control.”
So, was that before or after Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell?
The orange chicken was lousy - only ate less than half of one.
Darn...that's too bad, BK. I hate it when that happens.
Back to ASSASSins for a moment:
It's interesting (to me) that I've always cared less about what Mr. Sondheim may have thought about our scrappy little 4-piece reduction than the fact the he had to hear me land on a chord before the actor got there in a recitative-like passage. It's one of those things you want to kill yourself over and you forever wonder how it could have happened (and it was clearly marked in my score), and you never stop berating yourself. BUT (there's that BUT again)... what eased my pain was the knowledge that the master later got to witness our MD picking up his guitar to accompany John Hinckley, losing his grip on it, and nearly knocking his music stand over. Thank gawd for that. Even though he's dead now. (Sondheim, not the MD.)
:))
While the new apartment isn't ready and hasn't been cleaned, we did get access. So I have started to move stuff.
That's good news, Singdaw!
-
What hasn't been done is they're replacing all the appliances with stainless and then cleaning everything.
Ooo...very nice!
-
In addition to that, I got a text from my boss that she is changing her day off, so I can now have off Mon/Tue/Wed next week, and I think we can get everything to work out.
Great news, Singdaw!
Wow! A new score by Adam Guettel, AND Bob Martin seems to be quite in demand as a book writer for Broadway musicals. :)
