Well, you've read the notes, the notes were stretched beyond endurance, and now it is time for you to post until the stretched cows come home.

And the word of the day is: CONVIVIAL!

I don't know exactly when my review of BK's book finally showed up, but finally it has! AND so has Vixmom's review! You can read them here:

:D

Well, this stood out in BK's notes:
"when the book is revealed I’ll probably make that cut section available, just because it’s kind of fun in a mean way."
That's certainly one heck of a teaser!
-
Great that the Kritzerland rehearsal went well!
-
Good morning, friends.
-
And others.
-
Thanks for the links to the book reviews, DR George.
-
Back to work today! But only for one day.
-
Good morning, all!
-
I could not get to sleep last night. After lying in the dark for two hours, I decided to read. Stella decided to join me. Five minutes later I had to put the book down, turn off the light, and I was out.
-
Today my house sweep continues. My apartment is untidy, and three crazy cats do not help at all. I would like it to be less unkempt when the inspectors show up on Monday.
-
Yesterday I had a nice discussion with Jeremy Clayton about the book's illustrations.
-
Last night I watched for the first time in around 30 years Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte. I had almost watched it two days ago when I watched The History Boys instead. I've always loved the movie, both for its wonderful collection actors and its Grand guignol outrageous moments.
Last night I kept watching Bette Davis and her mood swings from over-the-top craziness to heartbreaking simplicity and thinking who could play this today and carry it off? Olivia de Havilland at times seems to be channeling Joan Crawford, the actress she replaced, in phony sweetness and then there's a fantastic shot - after dumping the body - where de Havilland's glare at Davis is so ugly and frightening that it's fantastic. I've always loved Agnes Morehead, and her "everything but the kitchen sink" performance is straight out of Tobacco Road and so zany. And what a wonderful lineup of men to play against these three dragons: the wonderful Victor Buono, the great Cecil Kellaway, a suave Joseph Cotton, Wesley Addy, George Kennedy, Dave Willock. . . . I may watch it again tonight.
As Annabelle would say, So much fun!

My boss asked me why I only get sick on work days.
I said it must be my weekend immune system.

That's clever!

(which is what one says when groaning is not allowed)
-
singdaw, when you work at home, but one day you're sick, are you still expected to do a full workday?
-
Well, I personally haven't taken a sick day (unplanned) in over 8 years. But we do have paid sick leave, which accrues. I have accumulated about 45 days' worth of sick leave.
-
So if I were sick and unable to work, I'd use that banked time and still get paid.

Good morning, all.
-
I've been up, just spending time ketchuping on things in the recliner.
-
The severe thunderstorms yesterday were nothing here. Some places got them, but they were all tiny cells popping up here and there and we didn't get anything more than a few raindrops at one point. I do not complain.
-
Today, however, is heartbreaking -- it's a GORGEOUS sunny and breezy day, the likes of which we shan't see again for a while. At least for the next week, because our Heat Wave kicks in tomorrow and is supposed to run for several days.
-
DR Elmore, I LOVE Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte. I went to see it three or four times when it played in Fort Lauderdale. I had totally loved Baby Jane before that, and I'm sure I was there for this one on opening day. Those two were endlessly fascinating - and scary! - for me then, and I was obsessed. These movies, and Roger Corman's Poe films in those same years, were central to my youthful discovery of horror.
It's very likely that I only "knew" Bette Davis and maybe Joseph Cotten as actors at that point in my life, and maybe recognized Agnes Moorehead, but on every revisit to this film (and of course its forerunner), I gradually came to know the others and appreciate them all the more. I know it was much later that I came to learn that that was Bruce Dern in one of his first roles. (Which reminds me. I must scan some photos...)

TOD
In the past few days I've watched Nightfall (1956) - I thought for my first time, but I did recognize an opening scene or two - because some friends had been talking about it. And since I'd recently watched 28 Days Later for the first time since seeing it in the theeder, I took the plunge and watched its sequel 28 Weeks Later which I ended up enjoying more than I expected to. (I do, however, have no interest in the new film in the "franchise". Enough is enough.) And something else. What was it? Oh yeah. I started Licorice Pizza which I'm completely delinquent in getting to, but fell asleep only a short way in, so that shall be revisited very soon and watched properly.

Frank Pepe's, one of the great Connecticut pizzas, is giving away free pizza in celebration of their 100-year anniversary. It's only available if you're dining in, tomorrow (Sat.) between 11:00 and 3:00 pm, and only one per table. I think I could manage that, since their local spot is but ten minutes away. We'll see if I feel like doing that. Maybe I'll do a drive-by and see if there's a line.

It is New Haven pizza -- in my humble view, the two descriptors are synonymous. New Haven is where Pepe and a couple of the others got their start, and they're even closing their original store tomorrow to give those employees the day off.
(To be truly celebratory, I wonder if it's with pay.) :)

I just whacked some weeds and mowed some
grass other weeds in 83-degree heat.
I desperately need to do more of this kind of thing over the next few days, but it'll be going to 90 and above, so I'll restrict that to the morning hours and take it easy indoors the rest of those days.
-
Okay, I might have to walk back those ambitious plans a bit. Probably get some done tomorrow morning, but that'll be it.

So, 50th anniversary for JAWS.
We know where BK was that night!
I wasn't at the first showing, but I've always remembered standing in the line waiting to get in for one of the evening ones, humming Schoenberg's Gurrelieder which I'd just played a couple of rehearsals for at the Cincinnati May Festival.
I should see what the starting times were, and take a stab at which one I saw. Place was packed to the rafters, of course. I got a front row balcony seat just right of center, and it was an evening - and an audience - never to be forgotten. God, do I miss those days.

I danced for 3.5 hours this morning.
-
After lunch at an excellent Chinese buffet, I slept for an hour.
-
I ushered tonight for a student recital of would -be opera students.
-
The program was an interesting mix of duets mostly from Magic Flute, Cosi Fan Tutti, Barber of Seville, Carmen and more. Two guys did Agony from Into the Woods. And of those singers teamed up with another for a song from The Gondoliers. The finale was Brothers and Sister from Die Fledermaus.
-
All in all a nice programme.

TOD:
I'm headed for the hills on Sunday. Don't know if I will get to see anything then, but I am watching the rest of Walk the Line tonight. I don't like Joaquin Phoenix. He's nothing like the Johnny Cash I saw twice on stage. But Reese Witherspoon is really good.
-
I'm up, I'm up - five hours of sleep.
-
I always think I posted, but I have so many e-mails and then I go right to futzing and finessing.
-
And I had to run an idea by Muse Margaret and she loved it, so had to get that into the book, which added back the four pages I'd removed for the other thing.
-
Then I ordered Marco's pizza and began writing new pages.
-
Pizza was awful - can't do Marco's anymore.
-
Then back to new pages.
-
Then a really important phone call to a person I want to blurb the book - and that worked out.
-
Then looking at cover ideas.
-
Now I want to watch a damn movie.
-
I think I'm in the last ten to fifteen pages of the book and I didn't want to do that tonight. I might finish tomorrow but I definitely think I'll finish by Sunday.

-
What's your favorite Johnny Cash song?
I was never a Johnny Cash fan. ::)
-
I think mine is Ring of Fire.
Speaking of Ring of Fire, there's a 1961 movie by that name, starring David Janssen that was filmed in Oregon and parts of Washington state.
-
There's a town in the library district that has a festival I think every year and they show the movie and celebrate it, I guess.
-
Anyway, the library branch in that town (I forget which) wanted new copies of the movie for the library system, so when we tried to order it, it wasn't available from most sellers...not even eBay.
-
We found a seller in Canada of all places that had DVD-R copies for sale (they listed on their website that they had the rights to copy the move), so we ordered three copies.
-
When they arrived, we watched it to check on the quality and it turns out that it was essentially just copied from TCM, but it wasn't even a good copy!
-
The movie is only about 90 minutes or so long, but the video on the disc was three hours! :o
-
After the movie ended, it looks like the guy just kept recording, but it's all black...no sound, no video, just wasted time.
-
We figured that it was the only available way to get the movie to the library, so we sent out once copy with a note in the DVD case explaining why it was so wonky.
-
Not too long after that, I noticed that Turner Classic Movies (TCM) was showing the movie again, so (for myself, initially), I asked my sister's boyfriend if he could record it and make me a DVD (this was before I was able to do that myself...and long before I got rid of cable TV altogether). ::)
-
He was able to capture the TCM stream and found that it was in hi-def, and he made me a Blu-ray of the movie, and it looked great! SO much better than the crappy DVD that we got from Canada.
-
Since that was just recorded from TV, I asked my supervisor at the time if we could just copy my Blu-ray and send that out...and I suggested that Larry (my sister's boyfriend) could also make really good DVD copy and we could make 2-disc combo packs for the library.
-
She said why the heck not, so Larry made three copies each of the Blu-ray discs and the DVDs, and I made up a DVD cover and we sent them out to the library. They were VERY happy!
-
They still have the sets and they're still being used. And since they're not copy-guarded, if anything happens to any of the Blu-rays or DVDs, they can easily make new copies. ;)
-
PAGE RUPERT RING OF FIRE POSTER DANCE!!
-
This is the artwork that I used to make the Blu-ray/DVD cover.
-
So, I was just searching my computer to make sure that I still had the original .mp4 file of the movie and I do, but because I just searched "fire," I came across some things that I forgot that I had.
-
One of them had the file name of "Broadway's Douglas Sills sings Into the Fire with The Valley Villagers Virtual Choir."
-
I just had to play it because I love the song and Douglas Sills is quite the cutie. ;)
-
Anyway, it was done in 2020, early in the pandemic, and this group had each of their members record themselves singing their own parts and then someone put them all together to make a very cool choral version of the song, and then Douglas Sills sings part of the song as a solo, then the choir joins him.
-
But what's really cool (and I don't know if I knew this back then), but BK's close and personal friend Robert Yacko is part of this virtual choir!
-
Christine Andreas, who also starred in the show on Broadway, introduced the video, and the other names that I recognized were Jessica Grové (she starred as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz at Madison Square Garden with Eartha Kitt and Mickey Rooney), Larry Rabin, and David Engel!
-
AND the best part is that the video is still on YouTube here:
