Title: THE HAPPY HARDCOVER

Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of the happy hooker hardcover, and now it is time for you to post until the happy cows come home.

I’m home in my very own bed. The cremation convention flamed out about noon. I purposely had a late flight in hopes of visiting my cousin in Phoenix and my Uncle Bill who just turned 90. I’d missed his big birthday party at the family picnic in Indiana, but caught him in Phoenix where he lives with my cousin and her husband. Plus my Aunt. A good visit, many memories shared.

Brings to mind, related to the adult novels discussion the other day:  There was indeed a copy of "The Happy Hooker" in the bookcase in the living room in Luna Park with all the paperbacks, alongside the likes of "The Godfather" and "Peyton Place" and "Marjorie Morningstar."

And of course, the Dark Shadows paperback series, which I recall really enjoying as a yute, as much as the TV series.

TOD: I don't recall ever being assigned specific chores when I lived with my parents; we just did what we were asked to do without thinking of them as chores. Or if we saw the garbage was full, we took it out to the incinerator, if it looked like we were running short on a certain type of food, we just went to the store, that sort of thing.

A sort-of chore I enjoyed was "cooking" from recipes every now and then, and when I was a teen, my parents really enjoyed my ricotta with pineapple cheesecake which I'd make as a meal for myself in one of my teenage dieting modes, and it was dessert for my parents.   There was also a homemade pizza that I really enjoyed making, using whatever bread we had as the crust, and I'd make it for my parents as well.

Well, I'm not happy about this, but such is the way of the publishing world: Jeremy's illustration I posted yesterday exists only in the Kindle edition. The publisher omitted it from both hardcover and paper. I had always wanted it for the title page, but call it Birds Eye.

DR John G, I love Greater Tuna! When I was doing Babes in Toyland with the Houston Grand Opera, the original writers/actors were doing the Christmas version in Houston, and we all stayed in the same apartment building. They were wonderful people. I was lucky to see them in both Greater Tuna and the Christmas one. I wish the HBO version were on DVD. Maybe it's on YouTube?

Yesterday's TOD:

Last night as I was browsing my shelves for something to watch, a title that I'd been meaning to return to for several years popped out at me:  Miracle Mile, filmed in 1988, released in 1989 just as I was preparing to move from L.A.

I somehow never even knew about this movie until Kino released their Blu-ray several years back. (It's fine, but they now have a greatly improved one that I must get.) As an L.A. picture, it's mindboggling that it escaped my notice through those years. And for the likes of moi, who just happened to be passing through the Wilshire/Fairfax and Miracle Mile districts a lot between work and home those last few years, precisely when this was being filmed, it's a damned treasure. It also doesn't hurt that it's the type of weird little story I love, being a sort of Twilight-Zone-ish end of the world type of scenario, and containing elements of Scorsese's After Hours.

Anybody else know this one?

Amazon's algorithm is suggesting I add

"Politics & Social Sciences › Popular Culture"

as a category for my book (which basically is: sing-along parody lyrics about major events of first quarter of the 21st century).   No way of telling if that recommendation was done by a person at Amazon looking at the book or the computer system looking at buzz words, but it seems nice that the Amazon system is looking for ways to position the book.

Today's TOD:

I have to say we were fairly undisciplined as a household. My mom and dad took care of things, and they probably could have used much more help from my sister and me than they ever got, but I don't remember them ever establishing any kind of routine. We were certainly roped into helping with the dishwashing and drying now and then. We had to keep our rooms cleaned or straightened up. I don't recall any outdoors-y stuff. My dad always pushed the lawnmower around, himself.

From DR Freddie:

Quote
We're almost through season 1 of THE GILDED AGE.  Just one episode left.

So far, we see that most people were rotten then, both the rich and the not-rich, just like today.  But they sure dressed nicely while being rotten back then.

I hadn't known that this was from the same creator and writer as DOWNTON ABBEY.

Fellows is why we considered watching it but then we changed our minds and watched something else.

I don't really look at Amazon for books very much, however, when I look at all the categories under books on Goodreads I am amazed.  The book I am currently reading as 10 categories listed.  While different categories, the last book I read also numbered 10.

Congrats, John, on your new book (e-book has been purchased)!

I'm really enjoying the prose and the descriptions  (doing my these-years-usual jumping-around through the book based on the contents) - even though Skip is more of a wine aficionado than I am, so we'll get the print edition once it's out.

I put up a review, and if anyone is at that page, it would be great if you feel my review is helpful, to click on that "helpful" box under the review.

Congrats, Freddie, on your new book (paperback will be ordered when I decide on what else to order to get free shipping without having Prime)!

Thanks so much, George!

I've been delaying linking it anywhere anyway, so the book isn't technically "launched" yet and is still in sneak preview phase. :)   I'm also trying to figure out whether it's worthwhile to have a hardcover option.

I have several of your other parody books in paperback, so for me, I'd get the new one in paper also, just to be consistent. :)

For you or any of the regular DRs here, if you just email me your mailing address, I'll snail-mail you a paperback for free.  My AOL address is FJL1960

Likewise, George or any DRs, if there are any of the paperbacks from volume 1 through 5 that you don't have but might enjoy having in your library, let me know in the next week or so and I'll send it or them for free.  (This new one is the 6th volume in the series.)

I'd love for them to be in people's libraries, just because.

I've never heard if this, but it sounds like it could be a good movie.

Ditto...pretty much exactly the same for me. :D

Barstools aren't arriving today because - they haven't even picked them up - apparently, the tracking number was created on Wednesday when I ordered them. But apparently Wayfair didn't communicate with Fed Ex or Fed Ex didn't bother communicating with Fed Ex so the latter didn't know if they were supposed to pick it up or if Wayfair would bring it, to which I say, boys, pick up the damn phone and figure it out rather than letting it sit there. The nice lady I was talking to understood my frustration and she's escalated the whole thing with Fed Ex and internally, but Fed Ex refuses to give a delivery date until they have the package, to which, if I were on the phone with them, would say well, go pick it up NOW. We then had to reschedule the assembly people and we did that in the nick of time because if you cancel less than twenty-four hours they charge you twenty-five bucks. We scheduled the assembly for next Saturday. If it still hasn't been picked up by Wednesday I'll need an immediate refund.

After a well-plotted season one of THE GILDED AGE, and communications by delivered letters  so well-documented by letters going back and forth efficiently all season: the season one finale featured such an oh-come-on coincidence regarding the young leading lady and the lawyer fellow she was just about to run off and marry.

For other shows that I've loved (writers of THE RECRUIT, I'm thinking of you and your wacky irrational plot turns), it might have been consistent  - But it just wasn't worthy of the excellent plotting we'd come to expect from Julian Fellowes as a writer, yet the lulu of a coincidence was so crucial to where season one ended pointing to season two.

This sounds rather typical to me.  You are given a tracking number once the order goes through, and then the space of time varies between the time you receive the tracking number and when the item is actually collected,  though this one does seem longer than usual.

I usually give the tracking number a couple of days and then begin watching to see that the item has actually been picked up.

And castrecl "talks" about movie musicals all the time.

Of course, you yourself as subject matter are extremely relevant as having produced so many cast recordings and recordings of show music over the years.

I couldn't believe I'd never posted about Miracle Mile, so I just checked Amazon to see when I'd purchased it, then I went down the rabbit hole right here all the way back to August 2015. Turns out it was BK who first posted about it in the notes, and that's when I first heard about it and ordered it right away. I had forgotten that chain of events, but what BK said then was much the same as I did this morning after my second viewing. It's an incredible discovery for L.A.-ers if you never knew about it.

Also searched Home Theater Forum for anything I could find on the Blu-ray. The negative has been totally rescanned and the result gets very high marks. They've also added a *third* newly recorded commentary and a few other new things. This is a must-have.

EDIT:   I originally thought they issued it in 4K as well. Not so, but nevertheless a huge improvement.

I never had set chores though I was expected to help out and keep thing neat.  I never had to clean the bathrooms or mop.  I washed dishes, emptied the diswasher, helped in the kitchen, vacuumed, dusted, swept the kitchen floor, watered plants in the garden, turned the sprinkers on and off, took the trash barrels out and back in.  None of this I did on a regular basis, just when I was asked to do it.  Oh, I helped with laundry, learned how to iron & make beds properly.  We had housekeepers most of the time so for the most part I enjoyed doing whatever was needed to be done.

DR George, do you still work? I don't think you've mentioned the library in any of your posts for at least a year now.

Singdaw, you are quite observant...and I've avoided mentioning it because, well, I don't know why. ::)

I’ve avoided asking about it because I don’t know why either! But it sounds like a happy thing.

No.  I was on Molina for a while when I wasn't working, but now that I'm drawing my retirement, I chose a plan through Ambetter.

I'm not really familiar with either, and have never heard of Ambetter.  Vibes you are very pleased with them.

We tried Mort's Deli - of course, David and I have been there many times, but it was just taken over recently by the owners of The Nosh in Beverly Hills. Sad to say that the pastrami, despite the request of lean, was too fatty for me and certainly nowhere near Langer's or Daughter's Deli. But it was fun and I gave David his copy of Vegas Can Be Murder.  Lots of fun conversation was had by the likes of us.

I had a flight yesterday, too. I might have passed you in the airport.

Tannat by itself and a blend. Tannat is an ancient varietal from France that is highly tannic and is considered to be good for you because it is high in resveratrol.

With today being Whitney Houston's birthday, this was a parody that back then some found in questionable taste, but maybe enough time has passed since then!

"The Hottie Guard" parody to "The Bodyguard"  -

"We've Got a Chance for Some Hottie Who's Studly"
tune of The Bodyguard's "I Want to  Dance With Somebody Who Loves Me"
