Title: NOT-SO-FREE-FLOWING VERSE
Post by: bk on October 14, 2005, 12:07:22 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know that it is Friday, you know that flowing verse comes at a cost, and now it is time to post until the flowing cows come home - they're still free, thank goodness.

Friday. My last midterm exam. Ugh. The teacher says to bring two blue books to write the essays in. The class is only fifty minutes long. How much does he think I'm going to write in fifty minutes?

And you know how much I LOVE essay tests.

My darling Sandra, school has overtaken you and your life.  You are devoting far too much time to school and far too little time here at haineshisway.com.  If you get the balance right, you will be a much happier person.

Now, when you bring the two blue books to the classroom, the trick is to have already written the essays and filled them up.  Just leave a blank page in front.  When he says "go", you write something on that first blank page - then, when he's looking away, you remove that page, pretend to keep writing, and voila, you have two filled blue books in fifty minutes.

Ahhh....I think having DR CP signing copies of THE FLY DVD is a great idea!

MR BK I didn't know you were reading REWIND at the mystery bookstore.  I thought I READ everything carefully, but I must have missed this.  Hmmm. Wonder what else I have missed?

I'm listening to WMKV right now.

I saw Sweeney last night. I'm pleased and surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

I confess I'm a Sweeneyholic. I know there are those who don't like the show. I'm not trying to convert you. I respect your thoughts and opinions. This is just one theatre maven's musings.

I think it's a brilliant show (I don't use that word very often, it's one of the most overused words in the English language) and it's a Desert Island disc for me. I could listen to the show over and over. I know the OCR by heart. I saw the original w/Lansbury and Cariou. I saw the tour w/Lansbury and Hearn. I saw the much maligned revival (Teeny Todd directed by Larry Moore's close personal friend Susan Schulman  ;)). I saw the NY City Opera production w/Elaine Paige. I saw the Kennedy Center production w/Brian Stokes-Mitchell and Christine Baranski.

I was a bit apprehensive about this current production. The idea of a scaled down production seems like an idea from college or some "avant garde" director doing it because he/she can. I was glad to see that the production stood up to the changes. It reinforces (for me) the strength of the show.

I'm neither a Patti LuPone lover or hater (I know there are many strong opinions about her on this here site). I have seen her be quite wonderful, but when Miss LuPone is bad, she's BAD! Last night, she was good! And this from someone (me) who couldn't last a half-hour into the PBS Hearn/LuPone version. She was funny, I understood her (perhaps my intimate knowledge of the score had something to do with that), she was believable and I'm glad I got to see her do it on stage. I do think Patti playing the tuba was, to be blunt, stupid. It was totally unnecessary and took away from the scenes during the times she had to put her lips around the mouthpiece. They could cut that bit and the production would miss nothing.

Michael Cerveris brought a rage to Sweeney that I haven't seen since the original w/Mr. Cariou. For an actor playing a man filled with destructive anger, bordering on insanity, he gave an exceptionally grounded performance. I was impressed. I was never a fan of George Hearn's performance, I felt it was cartoonish and silly.

Diana DiMarzio as the Beggar Woman was excellent. Larry Moore's other close personal friend, Donna Lynne Champlain was very good as Pirelli (yes, Pirelli is played by a woman). The only really weak performances were (IMHO) from The Beadle (Alexander Gemignani - is that Paul Gemignani's son?) and Fogg, the owner of the asylum (John Arbo).

Pouring blood from bucket to bucket to indicate death was eerie and very effective as was having the dead body wear a blood stained white coat. I liked having the entire cast (10 people) on stage at all times. When performers were not in scences, they were playing instruments.

During the City on Fire moments I did miss the "biggness" (is that a word? does that make sense?) of those moments. Although the scenes worked overall in the flow of the show, I missed the large chorus of voices, the tumult, and the approaching meltdown of the city and various cast members. I think it works better with 20 or 30 voices instead of 10.

This is turning into a novella and I've got work to do. Suffice it to say I'm very glad I saw Sweeney (I also had a good seat, thanks TDF) and if I can get another TDF ticket I will see it again.

Later, gaters.

One book per question?

Like the students are all made of money, and can afford all those blue books.  Doesn't this teacher know that the students aren't made of money until after they join the alumni association?  Sheesh.

Good morning, all!  I must be either going through something physically or mentally unhealthy or my body simply needs recharging:  I'm sleeping around 9-10 hours a night right now.  Perhaps it's hibernation?

So, I slept late, now I'm up and moving.  Today I hope to get to the NYPL Theatre Collection for a few hours.

Dear Friend BK, I cannot wait to order THE LAST STARFIGHTER!  As soon as I get some money in the mail, I shall order.

DRBen, thanks for the SWEENEY TODD report; sounds like the buckets of blood were stolen from Peter Brooks' great MARAT/SADE (God knows from whom Brook stole it, and why aren't all those great Caedmon play recordings on CD?).  I love Donna Lynn:  wonderful voice, great personality.  I think Kritzerland should do a recording with her.

As to my close personal friend Susan, what's happened to her?  Could it be that all that bad karma she puts out has bitten her ass?  One can hope.

TOD:
CD:  Shauna Hicks & Jeff Harnar's Mickey-Judy Show, Susan Egan, Guy Haines 2 recordings
DVD:  Double set DEAD OF NIGHT & THE QUEEN OF SPADES, operas THE RAKE'S PROGRESS and CARMEN from Glyndebourne with Maria Ewing, NAPOLEON DYNAMITE
  VHS:  El cheapo porno

DR Ben: I'm so glad you liked SWEENEY. I'm getting more and more excited about it with each positive review. Of course, the Sondheim-ites here at MTI are poo-pooing it, but I'm not one of them (yet) - no, no!

Oh, good Lord, Carrot-Stick just pulled out a bagel the size of her head and, of course, it's overflowing with a cream-cheese-like substance that all but guarantees a good hour of lip-smacking before we move on to the two apples she has with her. ::)

I've caught some little bug that isn't bad enough to have me in bed all day but just enough to make me feel yucky. I hate feeling blah but at least I can still function and get chores and errands done.

I just read this morning that Disney is planning on moving THE LION KING out of the New Amsterdam and putting MARY POPPINS in there next year. LION KING would go to the Minskoff.

BIG MISTAKE. My friends who saw MARY POPPINS in London in June were not bowled over by it (they had actually liked CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG more, and we all know what a snore that is), and I don't see a long life for it here despite Disney's imprint.

Why not leave LION KING alone to continue selling out the New Amsterdam for years to come and let POPPINS go to the Minskoff?

Oh, I also recorded IN OLD CHICAGO off the Fox Movie Channel. I haven't invested in the DVD of it, but I thought if the quality of the broadcast version is good, I might burn a DVD of it and save a few $$$.

Why not leave LION KING alone to continue selling out the New Amsterdam for years to come and let POPPINS go to the Minskoff?

I think that's a great idea. Everyone I've spoken to who has seen MARY POPPINS swears it's one of the best things since sliced bread and the title alone will sell tickets for many, many years. And it's got the star-production power of Cameron Mackintosh and Disney behind it. They're the reigning King and Queen of media blitzes and merchandising in the theatre world.

The New Amsterdam also has a more appropriate ambiance for MARY POPPINS. I don't know when you were in the Minskoff last - it's a lifeless, colorless theatre with zero personality. To move an established hit into a slightly smaller space - regardless of ambiance or character - is a smart move. THE LION KING will sell tickets where'er it plays and may be one of the few shows that is able to sustain a long run in the Minskoff. If it can sell out the New Amsterdam nearly 10 years into the run, they most certainly can keep going in the Minskoff.

MARY POPPINS needs the space at the New Amsterdam, as well. It's a "taller" theatre space than the Minskoff (the New Amsterdam has three levels of seating whereas the Minskoff only has two), and they need the overhead space to allow Mary to fly off over the audience.

Thanks for the info. opefully, it will sell long enough for me to get up there to see it. I really did not like Patti in that concert rendering of the show, but perhaps she'll be more effective with all that practice behind her.

Well, regardles of my opinion, it seems Disney is going to do these moves, and certainly THE LION KING will continue selling out whereever it goes.

I saw the very first show ever at the Minskoff (IRENE) and also saw SUNSET BLVD. and THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL there. Yes, it's a pretty antiseptic theater. Not one of my favorites.

Maybe my friends were at POPPINS on an off night, but they found it darker and less enjoyable than the film, and the show didn't sell out there for very long. It's still running profitably, of course, but not at sellout.

I am back from atoning (a-toning we shall go).  :)

Rewind arrived yesterday.  Minor kvetch:  why no autograph?  How do you expect me to sell it on eBay for several thousand dollars in a few years?  ;)

TOD:  DVD:  we've been watching the Alfred Hitchcock shows.  Must say I enjoy them, though I guess the "twists" within seconds.  But those intros and outros are priceless.  CD:  just listened to NW guitarist/vocalist Joyce Cooling, but have been on a major Celtic kick lately (and remember, no arm movements with your Celtic kicks, a la Riverdance), so have been listening a lot to Celitc fusion band Lunasa, whom I highly recommend.  VHS:  last night's Survivor.

Inexplicability (is that a word?) department:  Woke up this morning and checked the stats on my Farmer article, and by 8:00 o'clock this morning had already received about 10 times the usual daily number.  Since there had been a dustup on the Scientology usenet group (I in fact received some hate mail from a Sci yesterday so if I turn up dead, sue Tom Cruise), so thought maybe they were coming from there, but they're from all over the place (including Rutland, Vermont's newspaper which is a truly weird synchronicity for me, as Jane & Keith will know).  Hmmm.....

Hmm, he wasn't sitting in the front mezz was he? Did he leave at intermission? The person sitting next to me left at intermission. I assume he didn't like it because of his body language, scowl, no applause at intermission curtain and he grabbed his jacket and fled as soon as the lights came up.

There is a Popeye's in Harlem on 125th
One on Lexington and 26th or so.

There's a lovely Popeye's Chicken near my office, on 34th between 7th and 8th.  The behind-the-counter people there are particularly friendly compared to other fast food establishments, and I'm wondering if they're corporately instructed to be that friendly, because you get a nice greeting and friendly service there no matter who's behind the counter.  (Unless it's just that they know me as a regular customer there.)

...Hmmm.... Martha Stewart is currently treating a couple of her audience members to polenta with "gravy" and meatballs...  And they're eating right off the table top!  No dishes!  -The polenta was just poured right onto the tabletop and the meatballs and sauce were poured on top of that.  Now that's what I call family style!

I don't know what you mean. ;) KFC makes sure to advertise their food with black people of all different shades and hues. I'm especially fond of the commercial that features the older black gentlemen teaching the younger, thuggish black boys about how KFC was known as Kentucky Fried Chicken back in their day.

Of course, the funny thing is - if KFC didn't advertise with black people, they'd be labeled racist. If they DO use black people, they're still labeled racist. What can ya do?

As for "Psycho" last night...

It had been years since I had seen the movie, and it was "interesting", to say the least, watching that movie with a theatre filled with a bunch of gay men.  -The one shot where Anthony Perkins "walks" up the stairs elicited a few giggles and comments from some of the people around me.  ;)

But it's still a darn good movie - even if the movie just seems to end sort of abruptly.  -And I've always thought the whole ending sequence - the psychologist's explanation - goes on a bit too long, and that it might possibly explain things a bit too much.  But, still, it's a darn good movie.

DR Ben - Thanks for your Sweeney report/review.  I do hope to see it eventually myself.

*And I also know the OCR by heart too!  In fact, I had the OCR on both LP and Cassette.  -So I could play Sweeney in the car and on my Walkman.  (The timing and layout of the tracks made making dubs from the LP a little difficult.)  I also loved the Cassette Box packaging.  And the having the full libretto included in both formats... Lavish.

I think the look on his face would have been more priceless if the sparkling prize had been tickets to his own show! Especially since Ms. Hedda Lettuce seemed to have NO idea who he was. I'm sure she would have made some catty remark about FORBIDDEN BROADWAY being the 'grand prize,' but considering Gerard has been making fun of other people's shows for YEARS, I'm sure he'd have been a good sport about it.

It is such a rotten day!  I've been waiting for a check from Ms Prince as well as my publisher, but once again NADA!  Pisses me off; I hate begging employers for what's due to me.

"It" must be in the air...

I found out yesterday that one check that I was due two weeks ago, was indeed mailed two weeks ago, and now... Who knows?!?!?

And the Express envelope I sent to my bank(!) on Wednesday, did not(!!) arrive yesterday as was/is guaranteed.  And, as of now, it is still "en route" with no further information available.

But at least I get my money back since the delivery did not make it there "on time".  Of course, I have to stand in line at my "local Post Office", fill out a claim form, and wait 4-6 weeks for the refund check.

I'm up, I'm up.

First off, The Last Starfighter is up and ready for preorder, so those who can and wish to, should.  The splash page on the site isn't the way I want it yet, but won't be fixed until tomorrow (Starfighter will be the main focus taking up the top two-thirds, and the others will just be covers at the bottom of the page).  Order away if you're of a mind to.  You'll really like it.

Jrand: I always do my first reading/signing at Mystery and Imagination in Glendale - it's on November 19th.

JMK: A million apologies - I was packing that stuff so fast, but trying to remember to include the sparkling something-or-other (I had to reopen about five packages where I'd forgotten to include it), but I didn't think I'd missed signing anyone's book.  Well, you know I'll sign it - you can get it back to me, or book me another reading for Rewind and I'll come to Portland and we can have a big get-together.

Re: Psycho's ending - you have to give that ending context.  It is long and one wishes it wouldn't go on quite so long, but in those days there had never been anything like Psycho, and they had no choice but to explain everything blatantly because many audience members were clueless about such things as they are talking about.

Size is a factor- the house set is enormous.  I don't know that the Minskoff would fit it.

Also, rumor is that Cameron really wants Mary Poppins in the New Am, he REALLY wants the show to go there.  But you didn't hear that from this former Disney employee...

...And I should have included a similar "disclaimer" in my original post.

And on a related note...  During the shower scene, I found myself recounting all the information about how that scene was shot that has been passed down through various sources.  Sadly, it sort of took away some of the "magic" for me.  Yes, I did admire the craft of it all, but...  -And that's why I usually purposely avoid most of the supplementary material on DVDs.

-But that one long shot where the camera starts off on her eye and then pulls back...  Still chilling!

But I'm still looking forward to the movie.

And I think the only other house that could possibly accommodate Mary Poppins would be The Gershwin.  And I seriously doubt that Wicked is planning on moving any time soon.

And I guess Cameron is hoping that Chitty will still be running at the Hilton/Ford by the time Ms. Poppins flies in.

Ben, glad you liked Sweeney. I confess to be a Sweeneyaholic as well.  Maybe my favourite musical. I found the production, when I saw it in London, though unconventional, riveting.  In that one Lovett played a trumpet (a muted trumpet); but she always was a much more real and darker Mrs. Lovett...not quite as cartoonish as Lansbury...which seemed in keeping with this whole production.  Very dark.

Bk, thanks for the Bossou copy

Jose, I read the Playbill article before I came here. For those of you wondering and not at Playbill yet, Actor's Equity has said that the 11 year old cast as young Tarzan can't play the role because he's British. He's not a star in his own right and he can't do anything another 11 year old American actor can't do. It's in the hands of lawyers now.

Hmmm...

And the Kennedy Center's upcoming production of Mame (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/95668.html) has shifted it's production dates by a couple of weeks.  Two months, in fact.

This doesn't affect me directly, but it does affect some of the people in my Damn Yankees cast since, originally, both productions were almost back to back - with an overlap during the last two weeks of the DY run and the first two weeks of M rehearsals.

....And with the scheduled closing date of Shenandoah at Ford's Theatre being May 21 (if it does not extend), I wonder - and have a feeling - some cast juggling could be in order.

Hmmm...

And now for a bit of music theory levity:

Quote

A C, an E-flat, and a G go into a bar. The bartender says: "Sorry, but we don't serve minors." So the E-flat leaves, and the C and the G have an open fifth between them. After a few drinks, the fifth is diminished and the G is out flat. An F comes in and tries to augment the situation, but is not sharp enough.

A D comes into the bar and heads straight for the bathroom saying, "Excuse me. I'll just be a  second." Then an A comes into the bar, but the bartender is not convinced  that this relative of C is not a minor. Then the bartender notices a B-flat hiding at the end of the bar and exclaims, "Get out now. You're the seventh minor I've found in this bar tonight."

The E-flat, not easily deflated, comes back to the bar the next night in a 3-piece suit with nicely  shined shoes. The bartender (who used to have a nice corporate job until his company downsized) says, "You're looking sharp tonight, come on in! This  could be a major development." This proves to be the case, as the E-flat takes off the suit, and everything else, and stands there au natural.

Eventually, the C sobers up, and realizes in horror that he's under a rest. The C is brought to trial, is found guilty of contributing to the diminution of a minor, and is sentenced to 10 years of DS  without Coda at an upscale correctional facility. On appeal, however, the C is found innocent of any wrongdoing, even accidental, and that all accusations to the contrary are bassless.

The bartender decides, however, that since he's only had tenor so patrons, with the soprano out in the bathroom, and everything has become altoo much treble, he needs a rest, and closes the bar.

I'm thrilled to report that I just purchased the Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection on DVD for $59.99 (regularly priced at $119!!) via Amazon.com's Marketplace. With shipping I ended up paying $62.50. Not bad, IMHO. Thank God for credit cards...

I was a little leery of buying it at such a low cost from a new Amazon.com seller, but they have that new A-to-Z Buyer Protection deal, so I figured it wouldn't hurt.

These are the titles included in the set:

Title listing: Saboteur (1942), Shadow of a Doubt (1943), Rope (1948), Rear Window (1954), The Trouble With Harry (1955), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), Vertigo (1958), Psycho (1960), The Birds (1963), Marnie (1964), Torn Curtain (1966), Topaz (1969), Frenzy (1972), Family Plot (1976)

Some Popeye's have this genius way of upselling. You buy your stuff, and then a little wheel spins on a video monitor on the cash register, and it might land on an extra side of potatoes or whatnot, and you get the offer to round your purchase price up to x amount, and they'll throw that item in. Hard to resist.

To answer BK's question of last night, there are indeed Popeye's Chicken establishments here in NYC. And I am going to behave myself so that I may treat myself to Popeye's dinner tonight while Punk is at an event.
There is a Popeye's in Harlem on 125th

Yep, that's my Popeye's!

And even though it tends to stay quite busy, that is actually a good thing - the chicken in the warming bins never stays in the warming bins that long.

And one thing I keep meaning to check out... I hear people ordering their chicken "extra spicy" - and they even wait a few extra minutes for it.  I wonder if this is some sort of secret menu item.

*And, the Chinese take-out place up a few blocks from there is pretty darn good too!  They even serve chicken livers - YUM!!!

**And I've also noticed there, that if you look at some of the specials posted on their wall, that they are same size as the "regular" orders of the same items, but they also include fried rice, and they are a dollar or more cheaper!

Alas, all this talk of food, and...

I think my body has been rebelling the past couple of weeks.  Just way too many indulgences.  -Surprisingly, my least indulgent day was the Eating and Walking Tour - if I eat too much while walking around that much, I tend to get an upset stomach.  -Maybe I should take the "hint" from that scenario...

And I think I am.

After the movie last night, I ended up walking around Chelsea for a while...  Then down into The Village... Onto Bleecker...  And eventually found myself standing at the counter of Magnolia.  One slice of Vanilla Cake with Chocolate Icing.

And once I opened that box of cake at Stuart's - yes, that's his name - I found myself saying to myself, "This will be my last piece of cake for a while."  And I really think it will be.

I'm not saying I'm going the whole Atkins, no-carbs, no-sugar route from now on, but I will be thinking a bit more about what I'm eating over the next couple of weeks, months.  Again, I have an Opening Night in April to "worry" about.

And since I actually have some structure coming back into my life over the next couple of months - rehearsal, rehearsal, rehearsal, show, show, show, rehearsal, rehearsal, rehearsal, show, show, show - I think that will help me stay structured too.  -From my post here on HHW to God's eyes.

:)

First steps are always the hardest.

And a post script/confession to the above post...

Of course, I had hoped to stop into Emack & Bolio's for some of their amazing ice cream - yes, ice cream in the rain - but they were closed for Yom Kippur.

And I only had half the slice of cake last night.  The remainder was my brunch today.

DRJOSE - congratulations on your "dating" situation....someday my prince will come as well.  I keep saying.  And your "musical" joke was hilarious!

Thank You, and Thank You.

...As for my "dating" situation... We shall see.  I'm sort of in a weird spot right now since I'll be leaving the city for about three months straight in a few weeks.  However, I think that's a good thing.  Dating was sort of the last thing on my mind when I made the move here.  Actually, I don't even think it was on my mind.  So, I'm happy to be "involved", but just a little caught off guard and "wary" of how things have progressed.  The time away will help put things into perspective.  For both of us.  There's lots of things that are going unsaid right now, and I think we're both leaving those things unsaid for good reasons.  But it is very nice having a new friend.

**And now I just have to figure out when and if I introduce him to DR elmore.  Then he'll definitely know I'm crazy!  ;)

CD PLAYER AT WORK:  My sparkling what-do-you call it, natch!  (Is that a spoiler?)  It arrived yesterday with Rewind.

Now I only wish it had some documentation with it, like from which? who? where? when?  Stuff like that.  I know I could compile most of that info myself from what I own--perhaps DR Michael Shayne will do so, since he maintains the site with the resources.

Enough carping, though!  It is a wonderful wonderful wonderful (that's three wonderfuls) sparkling prize, and I thank DW BK for going to all the time and trouble to create it.  It will have a place of honor in my collection.

Now to find the time to buckle down Winsocki and read Rewind.  [But who would want to win a socki anyway?  No, this sparkling prize is much better than a socki.]

You'll really like it....

I have pre-ordered "The Last Starfighter!"  If I didn't do it now, I won't have the money again until next month. ::)

Otherwise, the Topic of the Day:

In my CD player:  RENT:  The original soundtrack.  I've only listened to the first five tracks on the first CD and so far, I like it a lot.  I don't doubt that the rest of it'll be really good, too.  After that will be the original London cast recording (on Sepia Records), then the Judy Carne revival of The Boy Friend.  I played Lord Brockhurst in a local production in 1990 (when I was 24 and Dulcie was probably 37!)

In my VCR:  Wednesday's episode of "Lost."  I wasn't home to watch or tape it.  I was working on The Full Monty and didn't get a chance to set my VCR.  I'm borrowing my niece's copy (and don't worry, the spoilers haven't bothered me)

In my DVD player:  "The Best of Broadway Musicals - Classic Performances from The Ed Sullivan Show."  I've only watched a couple of the clips, but it's pretty cool.  I love the idea that these sorts of performances have been saved...even if not in the best visual or audio quality.

I'll be beyond shocked if THAT happens. CHITTY was only a bit over half full when I was there in August, and I've seen attendance figures in VARIETY that suggests it's barely holding on. It may make it through year's end, but I think it'll close with the coming of the new year. That's just a guess, of course.

After those, I put in the first disc of KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER and watched the first episode "The Ripper."

After reading the reviews posted at Amazon.com, I was very hesitant to put in the disc. Several people there complained about the image quality being so poor and being taken from videotape masters, but, honestly, after watching "The Ripper," I found the quality just fine for a 30+ year old television show recorded with mono sound and made on a studio backlot and on a low budget.

And the series has a sly sense of humor totally missing from the current update on ABC. The new show may have better production values, but it can't hope to match the delightful performances by Darren McGavin and Simon Oakland, two of my all-time favorite character actors.

I thought this would be interesting to those of us interested in aspect ratios. It's a comparison of a scene from the first DVD release of BEN-HUR and its more recent second release.

As you can see, the new release does contain more picture information on each side and on the bottom, too. Not that what's there is all THAT important, but one always wants as much of the frame as is possible to see.

Forgive the ratty scan. My scanner isn't the greatest in the world.

RE:  PERT KELTON

Many years ago, when the Internet was younger than it is today (and so was I) I had a text-only connection at work which I could access from home with a snail-modem veeeeery slowly.

One of the channels was airing "The Honeymooners, the Lost Episodes" with Pert Kelton as Alice.  When I searched on Yahoo (Google was not yet abirthin'.) I found a site put up by her family in her memory.  I thought at the time that was a wonderful thing to do.  You see, such sites were a rarity then.

I see that it still exists (http://www.kelton.org/notables/pert.html), albeit much spiffier.

Well, the hits to my Farmer article today are truly staggering (at least relatively speaking, LOL).  It's in the hundreds already today, when on a typical day I get maybe 10-20 hits.  I'm starting to wonder if NPR sent out press releases on the upcoming lobotomy program.  Their press packet was supposed to include a link to my article.  The weird thing is according to my hit counter it's people searching for "Frances Farmer" with various search engines.  If they just entered the URL (which they would do, I assume, if it were printed in a press release) the hits would show up as "no referring link."  Maybe the Biography ran again.  ???

I don't think so, JR--the hits are coming from all over the country.  I'm thinking at this point that the Biography must have aired and it's just an unusually large segment of the population that was interested in learning more.  I always get a *little* spike after it airs, but this one really kind of blows my mind.  I'm going to be really curious to see what happens after the NPR thing airs.

Back from a really productive rehearsal, even though Kevin was marking vocally, as he woke up feeling a little wonky.  I came up with two new lines today, both of them pretty funny.  I love when that happens.

I vote for another Portland get-together with Jane this time.

REWIND!!! by Bruce Kimmel

Well for all us who have been waiting for an insider's inside view of the recording industry by someone who knows - our dish has arrived.  And a fine, full dinner it is, with a drink AND a bag of chips AND dessert.

Jonathan Goldman (who must be Benjamin Kritzer's cousin) goes through some familiar workplace mishagoss and emerges and triumphs through the work of those left behind when he....well, you will have to read the book to find out.  The greatest power of the young 21st century is The Internet - and nobody can use it better than Goldman and Kimmel.

The melieu is captured as only someone "in the know" can describe it.  The personalities, the voices, the actions and consequences, are all delicious and devious.

A fine companion to WRITERS BLOCK - and a catharsis for those of us who wondered just what went down during the gunfight at the OK Corral.

Bravo to author Bruce Kimmel.  Another page turning knockout.  You will be tempted to REWIND - but are compelled to race ahead to the Rod Serling-like ending.  Rod Serling, yes....but with an O. Henry flavor as well.  Kimmel's voice comes through loud and clear in StereoPhonic Sound!

The book is a work of fiction.  Every word of it.  So says author Kimmel.

Welcome to his world.  The world of Jonathan Goldman, one hit wonder, producer of CD's and a man to be reckoned with, I reckon.

REWIND is the fifth novel by Bruce Kimmel and perhaps the most personal and cathartic of his novels. REWIND was engrossing from the first page and is truly a page-turner from the get-go.

REWIND is a rewarding read. It is suspenseful and at times a funny portrait of an honorable man who is dragged through the mud by people who look at the music industry as a plaything. REWIND gives the reader a look inside the business of the independent music label.

The story focuses on sixty-year-old singer/songwriter and one-hit wonder, Jonathan Goldman, who after many years in the music business is ousted from the record label he created. Then his former partners and malcontent co-workers, through lies and deceit, make his life a waking hell. Goldman tries to retain his dignity through the litigious nightmare, planted news items and false rumors. Despite the support of small group of friends, his life spirals downwards into a well of despair that he may not be able to climb out of.

Then those who are involved start to die one by one.

REWIND is Bruce Kimmel’s most accomplished writing yet, and he as grown and evolved as author. The chapters are told in the first person of the various characters involved in the story and they speak in their own voice and style; a refreshing approach of writing that I don't believe I have seen before.

I highly recommend this book to mystery aficionados, music and show business lovers, and anyone who enjoys reading.

I am tired of wet-vacing the basement

I am tired of wet footprints all over the front foyer

Vixdad is tired of climbing up and clearing the gutters

and going out in the street and clearing the drain

(I admit his rain jobs are much yuckier, wetter and dangerous than mine)

However did Noah and his wife manage?

We have a big Greek Orthodox wedding to attend tomorrow.

Vibes please that the rain stops sometime tonight and the day is bright and sunny for her

The church is at 10 and the cocktail hour starts at noon and the reception starts at 1 and runs until 5 or 6... then we must drive 60 odd miles out to my brothers' house to pick up the Vixter who is spending the night and all day tomorrow there .

I shall be E & T until at least Sunday afternoon I should think.

I'm in the book!  Now, should I change my name on the site to my REWIND alter ego?  Marty's wrong about the original orchestra sessions:  we only had three strings at the beginning: Michelle on violin, Nick on viola, and Ted on cello.  Only Ted, the best of the group, stayed around.

Reading REWIND is like watching parts of Bruce's life and mine flashing before my eyes!

I am sure you'e mistaken, it is after all a book of fiction... every word  ;D :-*

I had a really full night of TV and video.

First up was the laserdisc of IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER. I haven't seen the film in awhile, and since it's not slated to come out on DVD until next year, I took the laserdisc from the Gene Kelly Collection off the shelf and watched.

The Eastman Color isn't the brightest, of course, but the print used is very good, and the stereo surround is magnificent. I had this HUGE grin on my face as the main titles played because the wonderful score is played so beautifully by the MGM orchestra in lush arrangements that just lift you up to a musical high.

After the movie concludes, two outtakes are presented: "Jack and the Space Giants," a tour de force by Michael Kidd that takes place in a kitchen as he cooks a wondrous meal while dancing acrobatically. An amazing achievement, and according to rumor, one that some internal jealousy caused to be cut from the film. A shame because the other two male stars each got a bravura production number and without this, Kidd comes off as a distinct third in the trio.

The other outtake is "Love Is Nothing But a Racket," a Kelly-Charisse comedy duet as the two covort through an array of costumes while singing and dancing. Silly fun but wisely cut from the film.

After that I watched INVASION from Wednesday night. It remains creepy and weird, and the alien plan for invasion isn't quite clear yet. It also contained some irritating teenage nonsense about leaving home and promising to return by curfew and naturally disobeying.

Not that teens the world over aren't sometimes guilty of disobeying, but after a terrible natural disaster like the hurricane that hit this town and weird things happening all around, I found it hard to believe this group of teenagers could plan this bonfire drinking party in the Everglades and not be found out by anyone's parents or the local law enforecement.

Naturally, something terrible happens to one of the teens who sees that shiny "thing" in the water. . . .

Kind of predictable.

And finally I got around to last night's NIGHT STALKER. Didn't really understand the premise of this week's monster. Yes, it was a spirit who could prey on a person's worst fear and destroy them with it, but the spirit contained in this old house could attack people whether they were in the house or not.

Call the old KOLCHAK series corny, but at least many of those were monsters that had some basis in supernatural tradition.

And again, no humor at all. The other reporter played by Gabrielle Union who scoffs at all the monster stuff has already gotten tedious. I don't know why the powrs that be thought Kolchak needed a doubting sidekick. And how many monsters before she starts listening and not deriding him?

Did you get your Popeyes tonight? We had our traditional Friday night pizza and hot wings, before vixdad went to his D & D game & the Vixter to her sleepover,  but what I really wanted was a lucious fried chicken breast

Popeye's yes. I stopped by there on the way home, the one in Jose's neighborhood (which keeps its employees behind a wall of bulletproof glass). I just got a big box of chicken and some fries and settled in to cheer on the White Sox.

Great chicken, and now I have some in the fridge for later in the weekend. Have I told you I love cold chicken as much as warm chicken?

Good Evening!

Back from Chicago starring Ms. Brooke Shields...

I have to say that as much as I do like the show, this version is still not the show.  It's still the glorified concert version it started off as.  Minimal set, minimal costumes, etc.  *And I still remember hoping that when the show "transferred" from City Center to the Richard Rodgers (wasn't that where it was originally?), that they were going to expand the playing/dancing area - Oh! how I would love to see the "Cell Block Tango" take place on a full stage!  However, I will say that this version of the show has developed over the years - the actors and actresses don't mug and pose as much as they originally did, and the producers and director(s) have allowed for the individual cast members to show more of their own personality.  With that disclaimer out the way...

It was a good show.  Luba Mason as Velma Kelly acquits herself nicely.  -And it's nice to see that she escaped from the cultural dessert that was The Ten Commandments.  Clarke Peters' Billy Flynn seemed a little vocally strained tonight, and I missed the innate sexuality that James Naughton brought to the role.  Debra Monk is a wonderful Mama Morton, although I found myself feeling that she is sort of wasted in this production - but I think that's just the way the production is fashioned.  And R. Lowe is one of the best Mary Sunshine's I've ever heard.  The high notes and the quality of those notes were actually quite beautiful at times.

As for the Roxie of Brooke Shields...  Dance-wise, she really holds her own.  -Unlike Melanie Griffith who basically did none of the choreography when she stepped into the show (and then got raves from the critics).  Vocally, unfortunately, she just seemed not right for the role.  I'm still wondering if it's the Chicago accent she's trying to adopt, or whether she was holding back tonight.  I just kept wishing that she would open her mouth more - everything seemed clenched.  Maybe the role is too low for her?  And I also noticed that the tempos for her numbers were a few ticks faster than what I'm used to hearing.  Hmmm...

In any case, she really does her own, and the audience ate her up.

And on a purely "hormonal" note... The men in the ensemble...  -I'd like to thank whoever invented that black mesh fabric that most of the men's shirts are made out of.  ;)

*And my only general quibble about the whole evening was the sound.  Those horns carry well enough without being mic'd...  I found myself straining to hear lyrics more than I would have liked too.  Luba Mason, in particular, seemed overwhelmed too much of the time - especially at the top of the second act.  I thought for a second she had forgotten the words, and had just started singing gibberish.  Well... she was just not balanced well against the orchestra, and her words just got lost in the mix.

BK has another connection to Popeye's besides enjoying their chicken and inspiring his readers to do the same.

The guy who sang their old jingle, "Love that Chicken from Popeye's," is, I would wager, the very same guy who sings BK's song "Sittin' Pretty" in the film THE RATINGS GAME.

Trivia you can get nowhere else.

And it's still not raining right now.

Bulgarian music is quite sensational because it is an odd combination of Eastern and Western styles and harmonics.
There was a popular album in the 80s, Les Mystere Voix Des Bulgares, that is a real treat.

I'm so pleased that folks seem to be enjoying the book!  That makes me very happy indeed.  Please, in discussing it, remember that it really IS a work of fiction.  One always uses thing in one's life as fodder, but one has to make them work, story-wise and character-wise.  One obvious bit of fiction - I have never written a hit song, nor am I sixty, nor did I begin producing CDs in the early 80s.

Po Folks was one of my all-time favorites when I first moved to Atlanta. They weren't buffets in Georgia, but they would have incredible all-you-can-eat chicken and country fried steak deals on friday nights. That was when I could just eat like a bottomless pit and it had no effect on me.

They were made to look like country shacks on the outside. Then the inevitable marketing strategy switch, the name change to just FOLKS (lame!), and then they were gone. :(

GET AWAY TO THE BAHAMAS
I've read Mr. Kimmel's other books - I especially liked the Kritzer books, and I thought Writer's Block was a strange and fun read. So, I picked this up last week and I have to say I read it in one sitting and could not put it down. I love the milieu of the book, a milieu that Kimmel really writes expertly. Like his other books, this has some very funny things in it, but it's also got lots of murder, keeps you guessing, but somehow the tone of the book is suffused with melancholy. I don't know if I'd call it a traditional mystery, but if you like that genre you'll like this book. Or, if you just like a good yarn really well told (I loved the gimmick of the book, which I won't give away), then give this a try.

Ah, yes, the bulletproof glass... with the really big windows/openings in it.  Hmm...

However, the KFC in Southwest DC near Arena Stage has bullet proof glass too.  As well as the "carousel" you put your money on, spin, then they put your order on it, and spin it back to you.

HOWEVER, there's a place in Richmond near my old apartment that also has bulletproof glass.  Alas, they have no carousel thingy.  So, when one orders ribs from them - and they have some darn good ribs - they have to slip them one or two at a time through/under the slot in the glass.  Individual sandwiches and side orders usually fit comfortably through the slot.  Drinks are provided by the vending machine on the porch.

The post office near where I work, you can't just hand a package to the postal person. You have to open this garage-door-like window that only opens if their garage-door-like window is closed. When you close it, then they can open theirs and take your package. It's damn ridiculous.

Do they still have bank drive throughs where you put your deposit inside a little canister and it gets sucked over to the teller somehow. I always loved that as a kid. It seemed so "modern." But I realize now I never got to experience that as an adult due to the rise of ATMs.

In the mail today, I got two Region-2 DVDs from amazon.co.uk.  "Educating Rita (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004CZVH/202-9545347-3299069?%5Fencoding=UTF8)" and "Shirley Valentine (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002XP0FK/202-9545347-3299069?%5Fencoding=UTF8)."  Neither are available in the U.S. on DVD.  I knew that they were both based on plays, but I didn't know that both plays and both screenplays were by Willy Russell (who also wrote Blood Brothers) and that both movies were directed by the same director, Lewis Gilbert.  The best part was that they were each only £4.23 and including shipping, only cost $22.26! :D
Title: Re:NOT-SO-FREE-FLOWING VERSE
Post by: George on October 14, 2005, 11:35:51 PM
The bad part is that I didn't read the user comments before I bought "Shirley Valentine."  If I had, I wouldn't have gotten it.  The transfer looks like it was copied from a videotape, it's full-frame AND it has dubbed lines!  Evidently, when the movie was released in the U.S., some lines that were considered "too British" were dubbed with American references.  This DVD, a Region-2 DVD for sale in the UK, for the British market, has the U.S. dub.  How dumb is that??  The one that I noticed when I was just checking it out was some reference to a Ford and you could very easily tell that she was not saying the word "Ford."  The overdubbing is poorly done and the overall sound quality is not very good. :P The packaging is real nice, though...it makes you think that it's been cleaned up and all.  It has a cardboard cover with a lovely picture and the plastic keep-case inside that (you can see it in the amazon listing), but the movie itself looks old.  Oh, well. :-\

I haven't checked "Educating Rita" much, but at least it is in it's proper 16:9 aspect ratio, even though amazon.co.uk says that it's "full frame" (which I also didn't notice ::)).
