Well, you've read the notes, the notes had some think Pink ('s), and now it is time for you to post until the pink cows come home.

And the word of the day is: SEASONED!

Good morning, all!
-
I had a major brain fart this morning: I kept reading the posts and thinking, this sounds familiar. When I got to the post about Rupert the dancing cat, I realized I had read the posts yesterday morning. I am now caught up. Oy!
-
When I picked up the mail yesterday morning, there was a disturbing one that needs immediate action this morning, so I expect to be tied up in a bureaucratic telephone call most of the morning.
-
Hot dogs! I have posted in the past about the amazing hot dogs from the Liberty Restaurant in Middleton, Ohio. They were the stuff dreams are made of.
-
Good morning, friends.
-
And others.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Enjoyed BK's reminiscences about hot dogs.
-
I think my favorite was the Nathan's in the food court at the Danbury Mall.
-
Yes, yellow mustard and onions.
-
No catsup, please.
-
Nathan's had great fries, too.
-
Now I'm hungry.
-
I think my favorite was the Nathan's in the food court at the Danbury Mall.
Same here! I had fallen in love, so to speak, with Nathan's and their hot dogs at Coney Island, and while we still had the Nathan's in the mall, I'd go there and have the same thing I had at the beach: chili dog with onions. I believe I didn't even bother with cheese, the hot dogs themselves and their chili were so damned perfect. You didn't have the salt air and atmosphere and all, but that hot dog and - yes, fries, too - were absolutely recognizable as being the same.
I'm sorry to say the one in the mall left years ago. I can count (let me think...) at least half a dozen places that were my favorites in the Danbury food court as I originally knew it, that are now no longer. They've redesigned the place somewhat a couple of times over the years, but that doesn't excuse the fact that we lost places I liked. They could have gotten rid of others instead! :) A most notable loss a few years ago was Danbury's one and only Panda Express, and that still burns my ASS.
-
I know I've done the hot dog posts before. I'd love to go through mine and pull out what I've written before, and give a good update, but I have no desire to spend the hour or two or even longer that it would take to search through my posts. I think I summarized the different "styles" of hot dogs and where I've had some of my favorites of each.
To begin with BK's story, though: I, who lived in L.A. for 17 years, never had a Pink's hot dog. There was another famous place, too, what was it? Tail o' the Pup! Never had one of theirs, either. But I should explain: I grew up eating and liking hot dogs like everyone else, but by the time I'd been through school and was living on my own, I kind of didn't bother with them. Hamburgers and cheeseburgers, and then Mexican fast food, had become what I loved, and I just never looked back at hot dogs, even to try famous ones like Pink's. I'm thinking I might have had one at Tommy's or Carney's with the spicy hot chili and all, but even there the focus was burgers.
To come back around to DR singdaw's post, I think Nathan's at Coney Island in the 1990s or thereabouts was my re-entry into the world of hot dogs. I began to want to try them in different places, and I eventually began making it a regular thing to have good ones in the house for throwing on the grill outside.
-
I left out an important interim period. I ignored hot dogs in L.A., but thanks to my one year in the 'burbs of Chicago in the mid-1980s, I quickly learned about the Chicago hot dog and fell absolutely in love with them. On moving back to California, I initially stayed with friends in the Long Beach area, and a place whose name will eventually come to me had just opened up right there in the heart of Long Beach, and they specialized in completely authentic Chicago hot dogs. I was able to introduce my friends to them, and they immediately loved them.
-
Good morning.
-
TOD: My DH is from Chicago, so we used to go to a Chicago Hot Dog place here in town. We haven't recently, since being old ruined our blood test results.
-
As I think about it now, I still don't get hot dogs when I'm out, for the most part. The Costco one for $1.50 with "soda" is still fun to have once in a while, but two things have diminished it: they changed from Coke (my lifelong favorite) to Pepsi, and they stopped having onions in addition to relish, mustard, and ketchup. I keep meaning to complain about that, but I'm sure that no matter their reason, the complaint will be meaningless to them. But I should still do it, in person and online. Right? Right.
As for what I have on them: Well, the Chicago dog is unique with all of its additives and I won't go into that again. At Nathan's, chili became a favorite item (and when I was eating out a lot, a favorite meal was a chili, cheese and onion omelet - these work perfectly together with the eggs just like with hot dogs). I'm a typical snob when it comes to putting ketchup on hot dogs, but I tried one with it last year and enjoyed it, just as an occasional alternative. I've learned it's possible to return to liking *some* childhood things, certainly without liking them all.
You know what? I'm at a loss to list the various ways I like them. LOTS of ways. Just give me a good brand (I definitely like those with a natural casing, but the brand's flavors are even more important - Nathan's and Sabrett are a couple of favorites), have a good mustard handy, onions (raw, not cooked like the soupy NYC street hot dogs), and we'll go from there. I find I need cheese on hot dogs less than I used to. But not all melted and goopy. When I do have it, I think a finely-grated cheddar like you get on Cincinnati chili is the way to go. But..... there are so many combinations of things that are wonderful that I'll just look forward to reading other people's favorites, and then stealing the ideas.
-
DR Laura, I hear ya, re blood tests and such. I'm definitely a bit more moderate in my habits these days, even though I haven't been ordered to be. And I'll continue to get better at that.
-
With that, I believe I have given the class enough reading material for a while.
I yield the floor to the next Gentleman or Lady.
-
When I picked up the mail yesterday morning, there was a disturbing one that needs immediate action this morning, so I expect to be tied up in a bureaucratic telephone call most of the morning.
Vibes for an easy resolution!

TOD: Besides the ones already mentioned, Nedick's hot dogs with their orange drink were a real favorite.
Franks in a blanket are a favorite, especially when they show up at cocktail parties.
-
Wikipedia tells me Nedick's as I knew it closed in 1981.
Someone tried to resurrect the brand in the 2000's, but I never tried those.
-
HA! We always had a hot dog at the drug store soda fountain. The dogs were stuck on one of those spike sticks that went around and around.
Usually with just mustard.
As I got older I would have them with chili sauce. And my mom would make them in the sauce and let them be in the pan for quite awhile.
I still like to broil my Oscar Mayer dogs in the over and add shredded cheese.
No catsup - but for a change up I now and then add a dollop of Duke's.
-
I said I like to grill them at home, but if I'm doing it indoors I'll broil them. Or I'll put the oven on "bake" and they still get nicely cooked on an ungreased baking pan. I haven't cooked them on the stovetop in years.
-
I think DR John G. and DR Jane should have one of these; don't you?

A quick digression for BK:
I need a tuna pasta salad recipe that's easy and tasty, and based on its popularity I am quite sure yours fills the bill. Do you mind posting it? I'm fairly certain you've done so, as with so many other things, but I've never copied that one down for whatever reason. Thanking you in advance...

Thank you. I'm on the New York HRA (Human Resources Administration) program for help with utilities, food, and Medicaid. I had to be recertified byan application and submission of documents running from birth certificate and Social Security card to proof of SS and pension payments, bank statement, and rent receipt. I re-application was accepted in late July, and I had until Sept. 30 to submit my copies of documents. So, yesterday there was a piece of mail from HRA telling me that I was turned down for HRA assistance because I had not submitted my documents by Sept. 15 - not Sept. 30! So, I needed to speak to an agent ASAP.
-
Jen had mailed te socuments for me in the first week of September, which meant they had either been lost in the mail or they were sitting on some agent's desk waiting to be entered into the system. So, I looked online at my HRA account, which said nothing about the account being dead, then around 7:45 I started calling the HRA phone number.
-
Finally, at 8:00 the number allowed me to wait to speak with an agent. I waited 35 minutes and then I was asked if I wanted to leave my number for an agent to call me back. I did that and began kitty cleanup. Around 9:15 I got a return call. The lady was great, and she told me they had everything and I should be okay. I hope so, but I won't be certain until Oct. 1 when the new term begins.

That sounds very promising, though!

Thank Goddesses!
Nothing more infuriating than a piece of critical information being DIFFERENT in two communications from the same place. And of course it becomes YOUR problem to resolve.
Sounds good, though, DR Elmore. Whew.
-
Yikes! All’s well that hopefully ends well.
-
I grew up in a house that knew no other way than Oscar-Meyers boiled in a pot.
-
Probably my favorite hot dogs now are your average NYC street cart dogs.
-
I did get to try Tony Packo’s in Toledo a couple times, made famous by Jamie Farr.
-
I think DR John G. and DR Jane should have one of these; don't you?
But my name's not Linda
-
Good morning, all.
-
I did get to try Tony Packo’s in Toledo a couple times, made famous by Jamie Farr.
I had to google to be reminded about that, but wow, a treasure trove of information !
MASH and Tony Packo's
In a famous line from a 1976 episode, Klinger declared, "If you are ever in Toledo, Ohio, on the Hungarian side of town, Tony Packo's got the greatest Hungarian hot dogs".
The fictional MASH* unit also ordered sausage casings from Packo's to use in a blood-filtering machine.
A grateful soldier from Toledo sent Klinger a shipment of Packo's hot dogs as a thank-you gift, a moment also highlighted in the show.
-
San Antonio has a local favorite, the crispy dog. Take a hotdog, slice it almost in half lengthwise, stuff it with cheese. Wrap in in a corn tortilla and then pan fry until crispy. Serve with yellow mustard. A local joint has upped the ante by using Alauski beef hotdogs. Mighty fine.
-
I also love New York street and ballpark dogs, Chicago dogs, corn dogs, Cincinnati chili dogs, Costco dogs, you name it.
-
I'm up, I'm up - six hours of sleep so far. May try for two more, but I have to write a little note to the Group Rep actors to rustle up some excitement about the play we're doing.
-
I'm a broiler of hot dogs. In fact, I've never boiled one, but I have used the frying pan but just don't like the way they come out.
-
I'm up, I'm up - six hours of sleep so far. May try for two more, but I have to write a little note to the Group Rep actors to rustle up some excitement about the play we're doing.
Excitement among the actors, or excitement to sell tickets, or something else?
-
For me, it's chili, cheese, and onions, mustard and onions, and red cabbage and cheese - red cabbage meaning the kind you get in a jar. I've had others, but those have usually been one-offs.
-
I, too, have never had Tail o' the Pup - funnily, I think Uber Eats has that for delivery and I've been tempted.
-
As to a chili, cheese, and onion omelet, Jerry's had the best ever and boy do I miss it. No beans in their chili - everywhere I've tried it recently - beans. NO DAMN BEANS. That said, I haven't tried it at House of Pies and I should - no BEANS there. Yes, that sounds pretty good to me, but I'd only do it IN the restaurant, not delivery.
-
I occasionally buy Nathan's at Gelson's but they just don't taste the same at home.
-
Jerry's also did a great chili, cheese, and onion hot dog - NO BEANS - I got that quite often, too.
-
I also love New York street and ballpark dogs, Chicago dogs, corn dogs, Cincinnati chili dogs, Costco dogs, you name it.
New York street hot dogs are wonderful, the best since the Liberty in Middletown closed!
-
Carney's, if you GO there, isn't bad but I've never found it great - their burgers are, however.
-
There were a couple of Valley jernts that always looked good, but they're long gone now. The Wiener Factor really knew how to make a hot dog. I think the car food idiots call it "snap".
-
I just watched the most wonderful documentary about Room 8, the cat who for sixteen years never missed a day of school at Elysian Heights Elementary in Los Angeles.

I like the street cart ones, but I don't much care for what they call "onions" there, meaning the cooked onions in that sauce. (You can buy a jar of it in stores, btw, Kristi especially likes it.) So I know now to order them in one of my many "my ways".
-
I, too, have never had Tail o' the Pup - funnily, I think Uber Eats has that for delivery and I've been tempted.
Well, now that you've done Pink's, you HAVE to. And we'll need a full report.

All right, for Charles and anyone else who is interested. The tuna pasta salad could not be easier to make. As follows.
Cook one pound of large elbow pasta - I usually just get Anthony's - it works perfectly and it's cheap. Once cooked, drain in a strainer. Then rinse with cold water, colder the better, so you get all the heat out of the pasta and it feels room temperature or a bit colder. Put that in your serving bowl.
Add the tuna - I use Bumble Bee Prime solid white albacore in water - do NOT use tuna in oil. Nyet. Open the can and with a fork, flake the tuna as you add it to the pasta - don't just dump it in there. Once that's in, use your largest mixing spoon - shouldn't look like a spoon - you know, those big thing you'd serve with. I'm sure they have a name but it's eluding me at the moment. Anyway, once the tuna is mixed in you can chop a red onion. I use less than half a medium size red onion - must be red and you must chop it finely - they should look like tiny bits of red onion - if it's too thickly chopped it overwhelms everything.
Once chopped, dump it in an again, mix it all in with the tuna and pasta so that it's evenly mixed. Then add two to three tablespoons of Best Foods mayo (or Hellman's) - NOT ANY OTHER KIND. Mix that in thoroughly. Add a liberal amount of salt and pepper and mix that in. Cover the top with aluminum foil and put in the refrigerator. I find it best to do all that the night before you're going to eat it.
Then, the next day, when you're ready to serve and eat, add at least two more tablespoons of mayo - may need three, but start with two - the mayo from the night before will have been absorbed. Mix that in thoroughly and serve away. You can salt to taste when you're eating and it does need some salt. That's it. Simple as pie. I usually eat half throughout that first day, then half the next day - if you do the same, simply add two more tablespoons of mayo the second day and mix in thoroughly and eat away.
Now I feel like making it today. IF you want to eat it the same day you make it, which I've done every now and then - instead of putting it in the refrigerator, I put the serving bowl in the freezer for about fifteen minutes. That chills it pretty good. Then I serve.
-
Excitement for the actors - it's like pulling teeth there to get people to audition, especially when the rehearsals take place during the holiday season, but I've solved that problem and I want them to know that.
-
Sounds wonderful.
Just one can of tuna? And you don't need to drain the water it's packed in?
Do you mean a slotted spoon? (My standard favorite mixing tool for many things.)
-

That's interesting.
Hope your email works!
-
Fortunately, we had NO AUDITIONS for this holiday show, since everyone's done it and likes to keep doing it and they leave their calendars clear for it every other year. A luxury. As are the rehearsals. There's nothing else quite like it.
Other than this one, though, everything is indeed like pulling teeth.
-
Congratulations to DR Laura.
-
DR Singdaw, thank you for sharing the nice photo of your dear aunt. I am very sorry she has Alzheimer's.
-
Bruce, thank you for letting me know where you saw the news.
-
That's a nice simple tuna pasta salad. The only thing I'd add is chopped celery and maybe celery salt. I like simple chicken and tuna salad.

There were the Gray’s Papaya hot dog places in NYC. “Better than a filet mignon.” That always got me, brilliant ad line. But the dogs always underwhelmed.

<SNIP>
I really like the Costco dogs, although they used to have (I think) Hebrew National, now it's the Kirkland brand (which I still quite enjoy), but I did prefer the Polish dogs, which are no longer available in their deli.
-
And although I do prefer diet Pepsi, the mix isn't as good as the flavor from the cans. And both the local Costcos have little cups of raw onions, so those are available around here. :)
-
I haven't had too many "exotic" dogs, but I remember getting a footlong dog at the Key arena during a Seattle Storm women's basketball game that had a unique combination of toppings that I thought was pretty good...but I can't remember what they were.

Silent movie day on TCM/
Quite a few years ago when I still had cable and TCM, they did a month of Mack Sennett shorts on the four Thursdays. I recorded all four nights (about five hours each night) and I burned DVDs of the whole series.
Just had to share. :)

TOD: My favorite hot dogs as a kid were at Howard Johnson's with the nice buttered roll, or the Ball Park Franks at Tiger Stadium. Ball Park Franks cooked at home were OK but just not as good.
-
As I got older my Dad introduced me to Detroit style Coney Islands. These are hot dogs served with Greek-style chili, onions, and mustard.
-
Oh DR MICHAELG that sounds very good.
I don't think I've ever had Greek style chili.
-
There are two classics next door to each other: American and Lafayette. We were a Lafayette household, so this month was my first time trying American.
(https://scontent-sjc6-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.30808-6/548269991_10239837884592138_4264246606592755389_n.jpg?stp=cp6_dst-jpg_tt6&_nc_cat=104&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=f727a1&_nc_ohc=QxrCnyHfxQoQ7kNvwGTpH91&_nc_oc=Adl22fM9CeXmNUOlz7zauv8otKwQXJuK1HSvll1jfhrlcRNtDbb_ezS1VNcpCfyv89s&_nc_zt=23&_nc_ht=scontent-sjc6-1.xx&_nc_gid=m7ClyICIS3DOUoC_c1QkgQ&oh=00_AfaZ1c26FT7F4_gNZ_qAmxidHqnp0nQfOhDKZpjA0MW62w&oe=68E0EF92)
-
I can see why my Dad liked Lafayette better. It's a smaller, funkier, place, and the hot dog isn't quite as salty. The chili is also looser at Lafayette than at American.
-
I very much enjoyed the Coney at American. I'm planning to get back to Detroit next spring, so I'll have to try Lafayette then and see how it matches my memories.
-
But even the Coney chains in the Detroit area are good, including the one at the airport.
-
Oh DR MICHAELG that sounds very good.
I don't think I've ever had Greek style chili.
I've never heard of Greek-style chili.
-
DR Jrand75 and DR George, my understanding is that you get similar style chili in Cincinnati, though I haven't tried it there to double-check.
-
It's less spicy than Texas-style chili, and probably has a light dose of Greek meat spices like cinnamon. It's a perfect complement to the hot dog, where a spicier chili would overwhelm it.
-
Detroit-style Coneys are another food you rarely see outside of Detroit. I did see it in Duluth once and it was pretty good. A high school friend of mine in the Phoenix area says there's a good one near him run by some fellow Detroit expats.

Thanks for the info, Michael.

Congratulations, DR George!

Thanks, again, Michael! ;D

MichaelG, thanks for those Motown museum photos!

Congrats George!

Unfortunately my facebook friend Tovah Feldshuh has gone off the deep end in her defense of Israel, offering praise to Charlie Kirk as a “clear figure of free speech…” Yikes.

CONGRATULATIONS, DR George, on your lofty new perch in the HHW firmament!!!

:)

And this one...

That "My Girl" sheet music is hilarious. Pretty sure the studio musicians weren't reading off those charts! :)
-
Just one question: why can there be NO BEANS?
-
Is there ever a situation where BEANS are acceptable in chili?
-
Asking for a friend.

Be back later!

151000!!
Congratulations!
-
DR MichaelG I enjoyed your photos, especially the Motown ones.
-
We did indeed have a very interesting book discussion.
-
That "My Girl" sheet music is hilarious. Pretty sure the studio musicians weren't reading off those charts! :)
No, no, those were for us, the museum visitors! They taught us some Temptations dance moves and then had us sing with the music, hence the educational-style notation. It was great fun.
-
:)
Someone handed me a loaf of olive bread today. Tummy very happy
-

Outside of Texas — and all human understanding.
-
Oh DR MICHAELG that sounds very good.
I don't think I've ever had Greek style chili.
Cincinnati chili is Greek-style chili.
-
Congratulations, George!
-
Back to Haywire. It is surprising in that it seems anti action and yet it was on network television back in 1980.
-
This is banned books week. I have started Dear Martin. I can guess why it’s banned, and if I am right, it’s just preposterous.
-
I may have to have a fourth slice.
-
With jam.
-
Let’s ditch this page.

Page turn!

Great, DR George!

Having seen Keith's third Wordle line I never expected him to get it in four, yet that is what he did :)
Great!
-
I actually got Wordle in 3 today. I had one yellow letter in the first word and two green letters in the second. It really was a guess.

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban splitting up seems to be getting an unusually large amount of press coverage.
I guess that's maybe because it's such a surprise?
-
Or a slow celebrity news day?
-
Haywire begs the question: Was Hart Bochner ever good? I remember him in Rich and Famous, and it wasn’t his best role.
-
Here he’s awful.

Didn't he stand out in a good way in a smallish role in BREAKING AWAY? That was the first time I was aware of his name.
-
Breaking Away and Die Hard were good.
-
Gratuitous post 201!
-
So let me get this straight...
-
There's a hot dog restaurant named Pink's
-
And a pop singer named Pink
-
How will I ever tell them apart?
-
And are we on the verge of a new page?
-
I think we are.
-
It's inevitable.
-
Does either resemble a panther?
-
PAGE EIGHT!

Back to Brokenwood.

I would like to sample Texas chili and Greek-style chili side by side.
-
You know, for research purposes.
-
Good night, friends.
-
And others.

Forgot I had a work session for the play to routine the act two songs. We got them all done. I do have some issues still with the last three or four songs before the finale - they are all holdovers from the very first reading we ever did and they're just not tunes I like, and the lyrics seem to just be saying the same stuff we've already heard. He loves them, though, so my job is to try and make them work with staging so they feel fresh. If that doesn't work, then I may try to get a couple of them either cut or changed to not so cliched tunes.
-
Ooh, look at that 666 in that last post's number. That's the devil's work.
-
I'm exhausted from the work session, but I was tired prior to it. I lasted about ten minutes into the new Jurassic Park movie and fell asleep until five minutes before the work session. I don't much care for the movie at this point, but I'll go back and give it another try. Everyone said it was the best since the original, but it's not because it doesn't have any of those characters and the characters it does have aren't interesting.
-
I have to watch a thriller this evening.
-
Nice to be on page eight.
-
Finished half the tuna pasta salad. It's good, but I think I have to let a little more time go by as I ate two batches in a row just a few weeks ago.
-
Also, it's just better when it sits overnight. It just is.
-
And I don't care who knows it.
-
All the best with the staging, BK.
-
Good night, all.
-
Finished with my viewing.
-
Will write some damn notes damn soon so I can get to bed after I post.
-
That is the plan.
-
Jane, Monday is the big pill day because in addition to what I do daily, I do my weekly pill, which is eight little pills.
-
Hart Bochner, no. Never good, no.
-
He almost singlehandedly ruins Die Hard. Terrible. His dad wasn't bad.
-
New notes are written.
-
We've been on this page for quite some time.

QUITE.

Right?

Let's put up a fight.
-
We can ignite.

Take flight.

The future's bright.

Don't be uptight.

Let's use all our might.

Reach the highest height.

Higher than a kite.

Even tonight.

Still, page nine is lovely.

Lovely is nine.

Like vintage whine.
