Title: THE NOTORIOUS NOTARIZER
Post by: bk on October 06, 2025, 12:07:41 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were notorious and notarized, and now it is time for you to post until the notorious and notarized cows come home.

I had a relatively quiet day yesterday. I finished signing the 25 books and packed them into two cartons for Fed Ex abd I located my full score for My Fair Lady, which became a rabbit hole as I spent too much time looking through the two volumes.

DR Freddie, you asked about Randy Rainbow in the Encores! production of Call Me Madam. I'm not able to tell you anything because, when I work with Josh Clayton at Encores!, I am not privy to any casting decisions or the casting process. Josh is very discreet about the inner workings of Encores!, its thoghts about casting and selecting a show. I only get inquiries about the score of whatever show I'm helping with. If I had any influence at Encores!, they'd have staged Jubilee, Dearest Enemy, or Babes in Toyland, which would have been better than that condescending mess at Carmegie Hall in 2017.

Much of what I've read seems to point to Randy Rainbow having his sights set on Broadway in in some way, so I'd wondered if the Encores appearance was maybe to get him his Equity card.

I saw on google that he had shown up at a BroadwayWorld event, and even seemed to have come with famed Broadway lawyer Mark Sendroff.  Randy and Mark are both even wearing coordinated outfits, so I thought maybe they were doing a number together, or one had come as the guest of the other.

Was listening to the new recording of Love Life, all of which is on YouTube - but I'd have to see a track list to figure out the order. First impression, sound-wise, is that like most albums today, the sound is dead - muffled, the band sounds tinny because it's in a dead room and no air (reverb) has been added. I'm so over people producing albums who know zip about how theater albums should sound, i.e. like you're there, present, like any Goddard Lieberson album.

He's in second grade now. So I told him how much the ride wrist band costs. I had him figure out how many rides we'd have to do to break even and decide if we should get single tickets or the wrist band.

Great teaching idea.

Oh, one more thing...

BK was talking about the sound of theater recordings.

I had occasion to re-listen to The Light in the Piazza over this past weekend.

I still love the score and its hyper-romanticism. But I was really disappointed in the sound. The vocals have too much reverb, and they are buried way back in the mix under the orchestra.

Other than the last bits of Bunker Hill and a couple of nice street shots downtown, this director person is more interested in filming signs and traffic lights and adult marquees and strip clubs, never getting wide enough to actually see where we are. Other than the Hollywood sign, I'm not sure anything else was shot in Hollywood, odd for a movie called Hollywood 90028 (and a zillion other titles). I have to read up on it to see what's what.

That's really too bad.

Today, I called him on it again in a different thread and this time he responded. Well, turns out he found the photo on the LA Public Library site, where it was fully identified. And who do we think was the identifier, uncredited? That's right, it was one of the many photos that I've been sent in hopes that I could ID them. When she sent me the Groucho photo, she knew it was an opening night, and she guessed at what word the three letters you could see on a poster were - unfortunately, the guess could not have been more wrong.

Title: Re: THE NOTORIOUS NOTARIZER
Post by: bk on October 07, 2025, 12:31:25 AM
So, I ID the theater instantly - the Las Palmas and the photo is dated 1964 so that meant it could only be one opening night - the three letters you could see on the poster were HOL. But I recognized the logo lettering instantly and I was right - the opening night was for Billy Barnes' Hollywood - a show I saw there six times. She thanked me profusely. So, it was nice to set the record straight with this all about me guy on Facebook, like he was the expert. I've identified correctly about thirty photos so far. I love the detective part of it. A few have looked familiar but eluded me.
